I don't know. I've been rabbit hunting with a 30-06 and I fucking swear those little fuckers are psychic. No wonder my uncle Juan brought his 20-gauge. Evil

Was watching another episode of Ultimate Weapons on The Military Channel last night and saw this interesting modification for the AR-15 that allows it to fire a .50 caliber round.

The .50 Beowulf

It's purpose is to allow personnel manning checkpoints the ability to engage and stop vehicles, which is something 5.56x45mm NATO can have a problem with (it has been shown to bounce off of sloped laminated glass as found in car windshields and it also can have issues penetrating deep into truck and car passenger compartments when fired head-on).

That would describe 5.56x45mm NATO in an anti-vehicle role, which is why the .50 Beowulf round and modification were developed. Wink

I meant the gun is a pice of shit but the .50 Beowulf is not to my liking as well its just a over-hiped cartrige barated my popular culture and buff-wanna-bees. No offence meant by that.

Well it's not meant for general use. It is specifically designed for anti-vehicle use at checkpoints to stop suicide bombers driving car bombs.

The point of using the .50 Beowulf round is it is going to penetrate the windshield and hit the people inside - something 5.56 doesn't always do. So you will be putting "warheads on foreheads" which will incapacitate/kill the driver/passenger and should prevent them from breaching your checkpoint.

As a general-purpose weapon, it's not very practical. Alexander Arms, the manufacturer of the round and modification, are sole-source suppliers and are said to not be the most communicative, helpful bunch of folks. Nonetheless, US forces equipped with the modification have noted it is far more effective at stopping vehicles attempting to breach checkpoints which means less casualties for our forces and civilians.

The point of .50 Beowulf is you don't need "follow-up shots". Your first rounds will take out the target, as has been proven in Iraq since introduction of the system.

Just think...

Left to right. .22 LR, 9mm, .45 ACP, 5.56/.223, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, 458 SOCOM/250, .458 SOCOM/500, 7.62/.308, .470 Rhino, .500 Phantom, down in front, .50 BMG.

The .45ACP is the 3rd from the left. The .50BMG is the one laying down from front of the others. Now tell me, what is going to stop or deflect that in close range?!!

I stop watching this thread for a while and this happens.

Puzzled why in the world are we talking about follow-up shots? Checkpoints mean the shooter is like, 200m away maximum, not 2000m. Also, you're shooting a vehicle, not the 'apricot' of the driver. Hitting a vehicle at that range should not be a problem for most grunts, even with iron sights. Anyway even if you're really that lousy of a shot the AR15 platform does have a full auto mode

That was one of the M16 variants where they tried to put in a 3round burst. The thing was a failure because if you pressed the trigger fast enough, you could release 2 rounds. As for the AR15, no i don't think they touched that one so the full auto should be there

The .50 Beowulf doesn't fire a .50 BMG round, it fires a much, much less powerful proprietary round. You'd have to seriously beef up a AR-15 to get it to handle a round like .50 BMG -the Barret M82 anti-material rifles were known as 'light fifties' and they weighed about 35 pounds!

To put things in a more practical perspective... .50 Beowulf will stop a car. .50 BMG will stop an armoured personnel carrier. Laughing (Well okay, a lot depends on the APC in question, but still... it's powerful enough to penetrate light armour.) .50 Beowulf is more like that .458 SOCOM cartridge.

If you stop the car, then it doesn't much matter if the driver is still alive.

That being said, since it also will easily penetrate the windshield and firewall, the driver is not likely to survive, either.

I prefer not to discuss my military service nor combat operations I have been involved in, but let us just say that I'm at times I am offering an opinion based on first-hand experience or witness when I comment on some weapon performance threads.

That being said, I will note I have not seen .50 Beowulf in action, but I do know soldiers currently serving who have commented on it's relative positive effectiveness in an anti-vehicle role - at least as compared to M855 5.56x45mm ball.

Good man. No specifics. After all, we're all in touchy positions.

Of course. The difference in size of the bullet would mean a difference in damage as it passes through the material. An analogy would be tossing a pebble into a lake and lobbing a boulder into the same lake. As the bullet moves through air, metal or God forbid, human flesh, it transfers part of its kinetic energy to the molecules surrounding it and that causes them to oscillate. What you get is the same ripple effect as the pebble being thrown into the water. Naturally a bigger bullet means a bigger ripple.

I expect the "gun shock" of firing would destroy the probe. Smile The electronics in the Excalibur "smart round" fired from the M-777 howitzer encounters a "gun shock" of some 15,000 Gs. Yikes!

I read a book about "future wars" where they get a bunch of analysts and writers together to create a number of stories. One of them was about China building a hypervelocity ground-based cannon that could fire a kinetic kill vehicle into high earth orbit to take out our GPS constellation and cripple our offensive capability (since most of our air and sea-based weapons and delivery platforms require GPS to function).

at (200m) range should not be a problem for most grunts, even with iron sights.

I meant the driver not the car.
I really much doubt that with the .50 cal they would need a follow up shot to hit the driver. All the bullet ha to do is go though glass and/or metal to its intended target (Driver and passengers).

Look, lessons learned in Lebanon and other places, idiots are going to come up with the cheapest car they can get, fill it up with explosives and try to drive through the check point to blow it up at the base. Taking out the driver and then passengers will ensure that the car will not be going far. The rest fall on the clean up crew.

Very few rounds can go through a car door or window and hits its target. This is much to the dismay of Tupac and Biggie... who thought they were protected in their big cars!
