Location of the Social Welfare Agency Compound?

Post by Kiskaloo on Tue 16 Sep 2008 - 23:08

Was it ever said where the Social Welfare Agency compound was? I cannot remember and I don't have my ADV volumes handy.

I'm preparing to start Michele and Kara's introduction story, but I need to make sure they're in the right place. *grin*

Thanks!

The general consensus here is that the SWA premises are split over two areas. One area, in downtown Rome, is what they want the public to see - a charitable foundation dedicated to rehabilitating disabled kids. The other area, located somewhere out of town, is a place designated as an off-limits military base. This is where the cyborgs live and train.

Thank you.

That makes sense. You have the "pubic face" where the charity work is done and then the remote location where Public Safety operate out of, away from the public eye.

I get the feeling, and I could be wrong, but I get the feeling that Section 1 and 2 share the same office space (see vol.1).

I disagree, Danjo - being rivals, I doubt the sections would consent to sharing the same office space. Also, note how Fermi and Gabrielli had to take a drive to the Agency compound.

Very true Nacht, but remember that when Rico came to Triela (her lip, bloodied by Jean) she told her to wait in the Section 1 office for Hillshire. Obliviously, Triela was able to walk there from her dorm room.

If I'm not mistaken, the dormitories are located in Rome's countryside.

That was my thought, since in the first chapter and second animated episode they're out stargazing. Of course, even in areas with significant light pollution you can see Orion and Venus...

I'll need to watch the second episode again today. I read the first chapter last night, but I should skim through the whole volume based on Danjo3's comments.

Right now I am thinking it may not be in municipal Rome, proper, but in the eastern Lazio region (of which Rome is the capital) or perhaps in the northern part of province of Rome, which is very rural. I need to break out my Atlas...

No I'm with Danjo on this one. Triela just shows up in there office. Unless she got a ride from Ferro, or one of the other staffers I don't see how she got there. Remember she was meeting Hilshire they, he didn't take her.

What's more I think the Public SWA is a bit more nebulous. I see it mostly consisting of aid workers floating around the country, with a very small head quarters in Rome.

it does make sense for the Agency to have a single compound for the offices and facilities of both sections.

-just look at all those extra buildings.

there is a second facility out in the countryside... but I'm gonna guess that it's just a firing range, nothing more.

Danjo and Wil both got me, dagnabbit. The two sections share the same office space - Rico says that the offices are 'downstairs' when she is in Triela's room (indirectly confirming that Claes and Triela's room is on an upper floor). Although this doesn't explain the drive that Fermi and Gabrielli had to take from Draghi's place.

The firing range can't be seperate from the Agency compound, LoC. Giuseppe, Henrietta, Claes and Raballo have all walked from the range to the dorms throughout the series. I say that the office buildings, the range and the dorms comprise the secret, off-limits facility out in the country, while the public side of things is in Rome proper.

...The indoor firing range and the outdoor firing range are in completely different compounds. Every time they go to the outdoor one, they need a driver.

My guess about Fermi and Gabrielli is that they (and Draghi) work primarily somewhere in a government building... the same one as Monica (the SWA's director).

Re: Location of the Social Welfare Agency Compound?

Well I just watched Episodes 1 and 2 (which then led to watching 3-5) of the original animated series...

As portrayed in Episode 2, the compound where the girls live and train is surrounded by a very thick forest. It is surrounded by both a tall concrete wall and a wrought-iron fence.

From the street, there is an entrance with a swing-arm gate. There are two three-story buildings directly behind the gate/wall. There is a long drive going up a hill, which looks like it wraps behind those buildings, and continues on to a hilltop area. At the top they drive under a columned area that faces a fountain with three buildings across the way - a two story structure in the middle with two one story structures to either side. This columned drive appears to be the entrance to the hospital.

Giuseppe leaves the hospital and walks across a stone bridge, but it does not show where he is going.

Other establishing shots look down on the outside firing / training range from a hill with forest all around.

And at the end of episode 2, there is light pollution, but it appears to be from the compound, because the stars are very evident.

I agree that Section 1 and Section 2 share offices at the compound. Triela is ordered to report to Section 1 and when she and Hilshire leave, they're walking along the same colonnaded walkway we often see the girls walking. Hilshire tells Triela they are going to da Vinci International (he says "the airport" but the location shots are of da Vinci) where they catch a plane to Naples. So the compound is indeed in Rome. Further evidence is when Raballo sends Claes into the Metro after dark - that is the sign for the Metro-Roma. Raballo takes Claes to lakes in the northern part of Italy - likely to try and keep the Section 2 folks off their backs.

I'm with you there, in episode 13 (can't remember the chapter no., though it's probably 7, or something like that...) Triela has to try and find someone else to drive them to the firing range. Otherwise, there would have been no fuss over Jose not being able to go with them (or rather, less fuss)...

Well, try to remember GSG is fiction. In Rome you can't see stars. Neither you can in its countryside, unless you get quite far away from the city. I mean it. If I look out of the window, to the sky, I can count the stars on two hands.

I live in New York freaking City, and I can see a lot more than just a few. I can see whole constellations and sky formations and planets. Maybe its my ultra light sensitive eyes that make me see them, but they are there. You just have to look up and let your eyes get used to the dark sky. Then you will see the stars after a while.

I find your sig funny, Elfen, given that Trellis probably doesn't even live in Rome.

I am thinking that there is probably just a straight outdoor shooting range at the compound where the girls live and their handlers work.

And then, farther out in the countryside, is that full outdoor training complex with the buildings and such. I would not be surprised if this was a military (Army or Carabinieri) facility that the SWA borrows. Hillshire took Triela to a GIS training camp to learn CQC techniques, for example.

It was this later range that the girls went to in Chapter 8 of the manga / Episode 13 of the first animated series to see the meteor shower (likely the Geminids in mid-December).
