The 'Ask a Question' Thread

Post by Nachtsider on Sat 8 Nov 2008 - 21:37

Nearly every Internet forum I participate on has a thread like this. The premise of the thread is that since the forum is made up of numerous individuals from different walks of life who possess knowledge of a wide range of subjects and fields, anybody should be able to pose questions pertaining to things they do not understand, and obtain answers from other members - all in this thread.

Feel free to kick off.

I'm a Satanist, and I can state for a fact that people of my faith don't celebrate anything called 'Satan Awareness Day'. Not sure about other faiths, though.

The answer to life, the universe and everything is 'forty-two'.

How do you connect a PC running Kubuntu and using a WG311T network card to a netgear network wirelessly?

Just on the off chance someone knows, I've been trying for months now :(

What is the meaning of life?

I already know my meaning but i wonna know what you guys think it is.

My meaning of life is to work hard, achieve the best, praise and
worship the Lord in both times of sadness and in happiness. As well as
glorifying His name in all aspects and promote
Christianity/Catholicism--if the latter is possible.

Maybe I should go for missionary duty...hmmm

How do you connect a PC running Kubuntu and using a WG311T network card to a netgear network wirelessly?

Easy question requires easy answer.

What do you mean by work vista around?

As for asking a technician, nah, I'd need to bring someone over for that. One of my school technicians tried to help, but all he could tell me was that my card has an aetheros chipset (which is apparently a good thing) and that my shell script should have worked... It didn't, obviously Sad

And thanks, Kisk, for those links but they didn't work Sad

I think it might be because my network doesn't broadcast its name...

If you know the name of your network, you should be able to add it manually. I can do this in Windows and OS X, so I have to believe Linux can do it, as well.

Indeed it can, but it doesn't want to for some reason.

The first few times I think it was because I was running it on 64-bit, but I've switched to the 32-bit version and it still isn't that great for wireless...

Is the network password protected?

Does the network use certain security protocols (WAP, WEP, TKIP, AES)?

Do the wireless access ports only accept connections from certain MAC addresses?

Is this a laptop? If so, can you take it somewhere with an open and unprotected WiFi network and see if it can connect to it?

Uses WEP
The router shouldn't allow connections from only certain MAC addresses... Not certain about that though
It isn't a laptop, but fortunetly I have tons of networks near me Very Happy If I remember correctly, it will connect to unprotected networks.
Easiest way, my shell script:

#/bin/bash
# Main commands
# iwconfig

# To create an access point, use:
wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode ap

# Connecting using WEP key:
iwpriv ath0 authmode 1
iwconfig ath0 key **********

# To get an IP address:
sudo dhclient ath0

Worked once, then when I updated it, I couldn't get it to work again.
It doesn't matter too much if you don't bother helping though, seen as I'll be getting an ethernet connection soon...

I don't use much command-line Unix (OS X insulates me from the need, most of the time), so not sure how much help I can be, to be honest.

That you can connect to unprotected networks means the hardware and device drivers seem to be working properly. So it's likely a configuration/security issue specifically with the network you are trying to connect to.

Is it a school network? Does their IT department offer any assistance?

Unless you have more than 2GB of physical memory (RAM), XP Service Pack 3 Corporate is actually your best bet. Even stripped down to bare bones, Vista is a horrible resource hog. The only reason I've left it on my laptop is the 4GB of RAM it has (that might be changing, though... I'm acquiring a version of Ubuntu and the advice of someone who currently uses it soon... and I've been dying to try this out).

I've recently been exposed to a school of thought that says man will evolve into incredibly powerful and enlightened beings many centuries down the road, following which they will go back in time and create the universe. It's a very ingenious theory.

*gasp* You mean just like 'The End of Evangelion' we will all turn into soup??? Wait, that means in a thousand years our successor would be coming from soup cans? Campbell must be very rich at that time...

But still, at the time there is still a higher being than a human race. Laughing the question is are you afraid to have a higher being than the human race?

Nope, not beings extra-terrestrial civilizations and whatsoever.

What I mean beings higher than the human race that exists here (not literally in this board). Are you afraid being governed or knowing the existence of a non-extraterrestrial being higher than the human race?

questions:
Who here has seen god when not under the influence of mind-altering chemicals?
Who here has traveled back in time and witnessed the creation and/or starting explosion of the universe?

answer:
No one.

To hold a belief regarding the beginnings of reality is to blindly follow what another says.

To allow oneself to be governed by something one cannot see is not courage of any sort. It's mental laziness, a refusal to think for oneself.

Panzer wrote:are you afraid to have a higher being than the human race?
I'd be disappointed if there wasn't something out there that is smarter and more levelheaded than humans (as a race, we're rather pathetic, with but a few shining examples of achievement per generation)... but I'm used to disappointment. Haven't seen evidence of such, don't expect to.
If I do see something of that nature, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

The answer to your question would be 'yes', Danjo. And I'm not sure what you mean by 'sad'.

LoC's tidbit is a rather simplified version of what Satanism's about. It's not a truly selfish faith, but one that teaches you to be selective in your selflessness.

Ok Guys, stop the religious bullshit right now.

We already had enough trouble because of this. I don't care if someone worth ships God or Satan, and I don't care which bible you all are following either.

You believe in what religion you want to believe in.

And that will be the end of it. And I am not saying this as Tommygunner70 the nice guy, but as Tommygunner70 The Admin.

P.S: If we are really talking about 'Sad'. than I have to say that its really sad to see that someone is questioning the way how others raise their children, without any prior knowledge of said Children. Or better yet, without knowledge of the whole family unit.

Aaah...that I can say that I have. Really, I actually have. No, not with the use of mind-altering chemicals and no, not with dreams. But not in terms of seeing it, but hearing and listening to it.

Really. I want to ask this here, but I saved it.

Have you guys ever had a voice talk to your head and do you things despite you trying so hard to get rid of it?

It was actually 2 years ago. I am raised in a strong Catholic family, but considering faith am still shaky. Going out at night is fun, manga is lovely, and doujins are sweet :p

Had a taste of my first beer at that age too Laughing drinkin'

It was during the day in the summer holiday when I was about to go outside. There was actually no purpose, really, and myself kept saying what's the point. It was then that I was about to head out the door that the voice say to me to go back.

Tell you, it is disturbing at first. I mean you can clearly hear it and yet you can't see who was talking. You know there was someone near but there's no one around. You think it was your imagination but it was not.

It was audible; loud and clear.

It might not sound believable, but it did happen. I can still remember it clearly. It said to me to drop what I was doing and return to my room. I kept on saying 'nani nani' and did make it out the door before eventually I decide to follow the voice and return to my room (because at one point I think I was imagining things, and at another it gets really irritating to me and weird because I am talking to myself at that minute without me realizing and that voice responded.). Then it said to me to open the Bible I store in my shelf for...a few years untouched. I was like 'fine'.

It told me to read a verse, and so I did. I read the first verse:

Genesis 1v1
In the beginning, God created the Heaven and the Earth.

And I cried. No, seriously, I did. It was probably what I call as my turning point.

It was then that I feel like my life has change. Its like something new has struck me and open my eyes, so to say. I began reading each and every verse and soon I was hooked.

Another to add, when I was still a kid imouto-chan had a heart problem--doctors say a crack or a leak in her heart (due to lack of development during infancy) and we were about to spend a large sum for operation when during the last checkup the leak/crack was gone. GONE without a trace.

Well, its up to you to believe it or not. You see, sometimes its not us who seek God; its God who seeks us. And I'm glad. Very Happy

Oh yeah, I still owe an explanation/clarification in the 'Child Soldiers' board. I'll have my say in it later.

Nope, never encountered anything in life that didn't have a physical manifestation. Look hard enough and you'll always find the source, even if it's just in your own brain chemistry.

Question

How you describe a basilisk?

Some says it looks like a snake or just a monster.

In heraldry the basilisk is represented as an animal with the head, torso and legs of a cock, the tongue of a snake and the wings of a bat. The snake-like rump ends in an arrowpoint.

I've got a question of my own.

Supposing the country you run is in the midst of a poverty streak. Why not print more money to make the country richer?

Now, I know you guys would be like, "But printing moar money just devalues it LOL!!!!111!!one!!11eleven!" But what if you don't tell anyone you're printing all that money, even the bulk of your own people? What if you hoard the printed money, and bring reasonable amounts out into the open during emergencies instead of flooding the market? Or better yet, convert the hoarded money into foreign funds?

I'm not sure you can keep it a secret. And even if you could, you'd still eventually see inflation rise as that extra money drives up prices because "too much" money is chasing "too little" product.

Makes sense.

On to my next question.

Are people like Mana, Gackt and Miyavi gay, transsexual, or just doing it for the lulz?

I did. I search my entire apartment and that voice was still around. Its very-very audible; as if someone is speaking right beside you but is not there.

If so, then the sudden cure in my sister's heart is explainable? Even the doctors were baffled! Laughing

Then stop spreading propaganda kthx. He can do it himself.

Propaganda? Not propaganda. It is the Word. Now I did say that He seeks us, but the question is do we want Him to seek us? If we allow him to, then surely he will find you. Very Happy

"But printing moar money just devalues it LOL!!!!111!!one!!11eleven!"

In Econ there's something called equilibrium (I don't take econ class so am not so sure). Where supply meets demand, so to say. If the supply is over the demand then there we have the 'drop' in the price and if the demand is not fulfilled by the supply then we have the raise in the price.

So if the government print all that money and doesn't spend it...
...who will? What will that money worth for? The more you print and the less you us (as in such case Imperial Russia around the First World War), the less value that money has and in the end in turns nothing but a piece of paper with good smell and pictures of your figures which makes good toilet papers Laughing

Its like what happened to Germany during the Weimar Era (1919-1933) before Stresseman steps up and change the currency. Back then, a thief would prefer to steal the basket carrying 5kg of Rettenmarks rather than the money itself.

Are people like Mana, Gackt and Miyavi gay, transsexual, or just doing it for the lulz?

And since this relates to my pop culture...

for the lulz. For the lulz I tell you, FOR THE LULZ!!!! *The root of all evil*

Aaaanyway...

Just got me wondering...

What do you guys think of NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization)? Or how about the UN?

Which is why I brought up the bit about hiding the money. You didn't read the post properly. But Kisk gave me a satisfactory answer, so what the hell.

The UN are toothless. NATO are semi-okay, but I'm not sure about what role they have to play now that the Cold War is over.

Yeah skimmed through it. I'm reading a Bio-textbook at the same time while visiting here Laughing

But if the money is hidden that would also lead to possible corruption--then again there's the over-printed money.

As I understand it, NATO is more like a Policing Army then actual armed forces.

NATO has always been more a political and even economic entity more then a purely military one.

Eastern Europe and former Soviet Republics didn't/doesn't want to join NATO for military reasons - they want to become part of a larger political and economic entity that NATO represents (likely as a precursor to eventual EU membership for many of them).

No one I've ever heard of who spreads propaganda sees it as such. I've even heard people claim that the good ol' US of A has never spread any propaganda.
lol.
