I just played Cod:WaW today and I noticed that the MG42 in it used drum magazines O.o

Did they even use drum magazines back in WW2?

yes they did use drum magazines ,it was mostly used when the MG42 was used in an antiaircraft role mounted on a tripod, quote from

http://world.guns.ru/machine/mg33-e.htm

The gun is fed using belts only. Feed direction is from the left to right; the feed is of the one-stage, push-through type. The belt is same as for the MG 34, with steel links with open pockets, assembled into non-disintegrating 50-round lengths. The same MG 34 type “Gurttrommel” 50-round drum-type belt containers can be used with the MG 42, and a new type of lightweight plastic 50-round belt container was developed in West Germany by HK and is now issued with MG 3 guns

it's not exactly the same as a modern drum mag (more like a can to coil an ammo belt into), but it does look like one:
wrote:Maschinengewehr MG-42

Although the MG 42 was designed to fire only the standard 50-round ammunition belts , it was not difficult to modify it to accept the MG 34's 75-round saddle-drum magazine. The large round fore sight on this example is an anti-aircraft sight.

I would not know what the enemy used, but the USA used and sent Tommy Guns with their 100-round drums to Great Brittian during WWII. They were great for for emptying trenches in the European Front, but they were not used in the Pacific Theater for some reason.

In WW1, Lewis and Vickers used .303 rounds in 100 round drums. The Allied AirCorps (British and French) managed to rig the drums so that they would be interchangable to either guns on use with airplanes. The Germans used a large ammo box to house a belt of ammunitions from 100 - 250 rounds in length on their planes. Due to the weight, German pilots kept to 100 round belt lenghts per gun. As per what was done on the ground, I would not know. BTW- German planes in WWI used 7.92mm cartridges with Spandau light machine guns.

Not accurate, Elfen. The Marine Raiders used plenty of drum mags with their Tommies during the 1942-44 Solomon Islands campaigns.

We spent about a month on WWI - then nearly 1 1/2 years combined (in two parts) on WWII and the lead up to it. The only reason I even knew planes were in WWI at all is that I used to be really interested in planes in general about 2 years back.

But hey, now I know a bit more Wink

well, on the one hand you have...
Spoiler:

-an intangible reward given... usually for answering a trivia question on a message board

on the other hand, you've got these:
Wikipedia wrote:HTTP cookie
HTTP cookies, more commonly referred to as Web cookies, tracking cookies or just cookies, are parcels of text sent by a server to a Web client (usually a browser) and then sent back unchanged by the client each time it accesses that server. HTTP cookies are used for authenticating, session tracking (state maintenance), and maintaining specific information about users, such as site preferences or the contents of their electronic shopping carts. The term "cookie" is derived from "magic cookie," a well-known concept in UNIX computing which inspired both the idea and the name of HTTP cookies.
-basically, that means a website places a text file on your hard drive which your computer and the site that put it there keep up to date... and it can do anything from keep you logged into a website indefinitely (which is how this forum works), to tracking every site you open in whatever browser you're using when the cookie is placed (which is how a lot of basic spyware works).

Depends on the OS.

In Mac OS X, I do "Alt-e" followed by another "e" (so the "Alt-e" creates the accent mark, then "e" again puts in the letter under it).

In Windows, it's ASCII 233 - so Alt+0233.

ASCII Codes

Heres something I've thought about for a long time: why are there reigon codes on any video game or DVD? Makes it kind of tough to get some video games or anime titles that aren't licensed here in the states.

Because licencers suck.

It's primarily because of the difference in currencies though. E.g. Not too long ago £1 was equal to about $1.50. That meant that they could sell stuff in the UK for about 1 1/2 as much as in the US. And don't think they don't take advantage of that...

That is the point - to restrict distribution and prevent reverse-importing of cheaper overseas editions.

Many movies are released in the "home country" on DVD prior to being released in the theater in other countries, so by preventing the DVD from playing outside the "home" country, people in other countries don't buy/rent the DVD and then don't go to see it in the theater.

And, for example, a Japanese-release DVD of a US movie is much more expensive then the US version (usually by a factor of two or three), so without regions, Japanese consumers would buy the US version, denying the Japanese distributors and licensees sales.

Doesn't doing marketing this way just encourage piracy since folks get pissed from not having the freedom to legally purchase their favorites video game, anime title, or foreign movie or TV show from that country?

Pirates will pirate regardless of how easy or difficult it is because they don't want to pay for the content or it is just not available for retail sale, period.

Before I went with a region-free DVD player, I just used to buy a DVD from Japan, rip it to my PC, strip the Region Coding and burn a DVD+R of it. Cost me an extra $1 and an hour of my time, but it was pretty easy.

Course now most of my DVD collection sans those encoded in PAL are digital files streamed to my AppleTV.

Some of us use piracy like a digital library. If I like it enough not to delete it, I'll buy it (assuming it's available in English >.< ).

Or in some cases, companies are antsy over releasing certain titles and movies due to differences in cultural norms between countries or time periods. Kodomo no Jikan and Disney's Song of the South are big examples of that. Razz

Only Yesterday is another example. Disney has the license for this in the US and has been sitting on this for quite some time, with no plans to release it. The region 0 versions are the only way that we could see this on DVD.

True -- but I prefer to watch it on my DVD player on the widescreen TV (my DVD player only handles Region 1 & 0 discs). I have a couple of versions on DVD but the one that is the best quality came with this DVD set (link)

if that TV has an HDMI port and you have a decent video card, your TV can become a monitor with one little cable and some fiddling with software...

This one's directed to Kisk especially, since it's aviation-related and he's an airman.

What's that thing that sticks out of the leading edges of airplane wings for? You know, the 'pitot head'?

They should be on anything that floats (in air) or flies since they help determine Velocity speeds which are used for control purposes.

Question to anyone who has The Shinkai Collection on DVD. It says that the Voices of a Distant Star OST is included with the DVD(s), but where? I only have the two DVDs in the box, and it doesn't seem to be on either of them...

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.

Is it possible it's actually on the DVD itself?

This is how it is on my Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers box set - the music tracks are accessible under the "Special Features" part of the DVD.

I've tried that, it doesn't list anything like 'music' or 'OST' in the menus of either disk...

I also had a look at it in explorer and for some reason there's nothing in the audio folders. Probably means that the audio is encoded into the VOBs, but seems rather strange nonetheless...

Does anyone know that one video game? Higarushi something? About some kind of mystery in some village during some festival? What was the deal there? Was it a serial killer, a disease outbreak or what?

Oh, that?

Hehehehehehe....

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.

Its a sound novel game. Similar to Type-Moon's FSN and Tsukihime series...minus the hentai. So there's no action or what-not (except Higurashi Daybreak), but there are decision makings at certain points. But more of which you just read through it all. Higurashi is, however, heavy on the plot and the setting.

....you could actually get yourself scared to shit due to the atmosphere it gives...

There's three Higurashi game:

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - When they cry

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Matsuri and its sequel Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Matsuri: Kakera Asobi

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kizuna

each of which gave question arcs followed with answer arcs. Most of which ends in blood. Difference in them is that they have 'additional' stories or 'side stories' that link (or give brief explanation) to the main story.

Say for example Natsumi Kimiyoshi's storyline (can't remember which arc (-hen) it came from). It gives brief explanation to the fate of the Hinamizawan villagers outside the village when the village is destroyed.

What was the deal there? Was it a serial killer, a disease outbreak or what?

Wow, I'm not spoiling the plot for you senpai. Its something you have to figure out Wink

But here's what I can give:

'Was it a serial killer?' - Close, but not quite. Serial as in every Watanagashi festival, yes. Same killer? Not quite. Mentally-deranged-killer is more accurate

'A disease outbreak?' - Close, yet again. But not quite. It is there from the start, contained, but it is 'out' somehow. And if it do, why was only 1 out for the killing-spree? Not the entire village? This, you have to figure it out.

Well, it is a mystery sound novel. Its not fun to give it all away when you can actually figure it and dig it through.

...and to be honest, Higurashi actually *slides* Gunslinger Girl from my top favorite to the second due to the heavy plot, twists and...well...the atmosphere.

Cocktease

What does that mean...?

Well, anyway, taking on my own little assumption on what it meant...

If you're really-really curious of what is going on I suggest you watch the series instead (Watch Higurashi no Naku Koro ni first before going to the 'Kai' or the second season).

Try looking up in YouTube. Maybe they have it there...

Then on the *extra* arcs, read it on an online manga or something. Look for it. Two extra arcs are: Onisarashi-hen (Natsumi Kimiyoshi's story) and Yoigoshi-hen (Overnight Stay story)

What fun it is to reveal a mystery story when its loveliest when you try to 'dig it'? :p

I purchased Voices of a Distant Star by itself and the soundtrack was on a separate CD that came with the DVD. The soundtrack was ok but my biggest complaint about it was that the same tune (Through the Years and Far Away) is in 4 of the 12 tracks (eating up 11 minutes of the 27 minutes on the soundtrack). I think that the CD was in a paper sleeve inside the DVD box (I have since moved the DVD and CD into a discsox container so I can't go look to be sure).
