It's frelling IKEA. Kara's PowerBook and monitor cost more then the furniture.
And having stayed in five star hotels around the world (including the Burj Al Arab, the Emirates Palace, the Waldorf Astoria and the Park Hyatt Tokyo), I can say with utmost sincerity that the SWA dorms are anything but.

Thats what I'm saying! The car alone is in a bit of excess- hunt down somebody in the rough part of town, the car will be stripped to the bare chassis and left on cinder blocks by a bunch of Puerto Ricans before you can shake down your prey for answers!
If one is staying in the SWA Handler Wing of the Dorm, they either have to contend with what the SWA gives them or buy it themselves.
Also, make it a 5 or 6 X 4 room. You forgot to add the private bathroom and private closet space the handers' rooms have. The Cyborg rooms all seem to have the closet space, but some rooms may have a bathroom- not all.

Re: OC Dorm Rooms
The rooms just don't look that big, to be honest. Michele's is 5x5m with a closet and a private bathroom, but I think the girls must have a large shared bathroom somewhere else in the dorm - Triela, for example, is walking down the halls (passing Beatrice) to her room after a shower. And the shot of Elsa's room clearly shows both a large multi-drawer dresser and a wardrobe, so it seems that at least her room doesn't have a closet.

Re: OC Dorm Rooms
Uuugh...Frederick's room wasn't even that big...or had that many accessory.
Lets see...
If I were to describe it, first cut the width of Kara's room by...1/3rd.
In the double bed section, place a single bed. A nice, single bed with steel lining use to hold the mattress.
Wardrobe stay as it is, although it comes in a more cheaper context
Leave nothing by the window. However, in place of the workstation, place a table leaned against the northern wall and a PC on top of it. Oh, equip the PC with a good graphic card and a large memory. Put a chair near the table. Not to fancy; a chair with wheels and swivels but not fancy and not expensive. Table comes with a drawer. That's where he stores the case for his M1911A1 and Mauser C/96
Then kick the drawer out and the storage unit with it, and instead fit it with a gun rack. That's where he displays his personal MG 42, StG 44, 2 MP 40, Thompson SMG (acquired from Edward) and K98K. Of course, currently he saves one spot. He got his eyes on *coughRachel'scough*M1 Garand.

Clarissa shares the same room as Angelica and tends to keep her stuff in their closet.
As for Anastasia, in my fanfic timeline, she occupies the room once held by Nachtsider's character Cosette. In that room, Anastasia's made it so that it looks like a frilly girl's room with dolls, a doll house, etc.

Gwen lives in a small first floor room that opens into the courtyard, sized for a single occupant... the furniture was all too big for her when she moved in, so Orazio had it replaced piece by piece with custom hand-made wooden furniture sized for her (at the cost of thousands of euros, of course). The poor bastard really bends over backwards for that kid.

Quick, random question... any thoughts as to how the cyborg dorms are constructed? My guesses were either concrete or rendered brick. Working out Monty's room at the moment (mostly for kicks) and need to know.

Re: OC Dorm Rooms
Well Yu never really went deep into the physical detail of his drawings of both the old compound and the new compound.
The new compound is part of a former noble's villa / monastery so I am going to guess it's brick covered in an outer coating to make the walls look smooth.

On the inside, they look like any mid-range hotel with carpeted and painted halls with the girl's names next to the door and trash receptacles. I am going to hazard a guess the SWA gutted the insides and renovated them.

Cool, stucco'd brick it is then... either could have worked just I needed to know what to render. Theory being that, since Monty's not regularly at the SWA and doesn't share a room she's been crammed into what is essentially a storage room without the niceties of carpet on the floor or gyprock on the walls.

They do appear to have a space issue - Claes was required to give up her "art studio" so Petrushka could use it as her dorm room.

Rachel aint giving up her room for nobody!
One would figure that with Elsa, Angie, and the others gone, that their space would be given up to others. Though Claes has given up her painting studio, she still has her personal library (aka Rabello's Former Room).

I probably should have put Michele in Raballo's old room, which would have given Claes a reason to come visit and help forge their eventual relationship. Michele would not have removed the books, instead adding to them himself.
Now I do want to go back to working on Pactio and add Claes (I was originally going to strip her out).

Re: OC Dorm Rooms
Kiskaloo: I'm keeping the room vague in the story since who wants to read about furniture?
That's probably the best policy, but here's what I've observed & done...
In chapter 18 Triela guesses that Angelica will move into Elsa's old room. I carried that forward, putting Amelia (the bomb-squad girl) and Marisa in that room. The only time this is mentioned is in my Episode 1 when Rico introduces herself by bluntly stating "The last two girls to use this room died."

girl's names next to the door
That's one I slipped up on. I had Elio wandering around the dorm muttering oaths about why there aren't names or numbers on the individual rooms...now I see that there are nametags in canon. Oh well...
Claes was required to give up her "art studio" so Petrushka could use it as her dorm room.
In chapter 33 Triela only asks Claes to move her stuff over one room. It's possible she still has a "studio."

Elfen: Rachel ain’t giving up her room for nobody!
With all the cat hair I doubt anyone else will be anxious to move in. Good defense policy...
Alfisti: Come to think of it... Claes really does get the luxury of having a lot of space to herself.
I see Claes as getting a lot of special considerations from the SWA staff, either out of sympathy for her lonely situation or as thanks for the extra work she does around compound. In her own way she's a little spoiled.
LoC978: Gwen lives in a small first floor room that opens into the courtyard, sized for a single occupant... the furniture was all too big for her when she moved in, so Orazio had it replaced piece by piece with custom hand-made wooden furniture sized for her (at the cost of thousands of euros, of course). The poor bastard really bends over backwards for that kid.
I see the rooms being equipped with basic furnishings to start, beyond that it's the handler's prerogative what he wishes to buy for his girl's room.
The way I wrote it, Marisa's room is very basic & spartan until my episode #10 (about 1/3 finished right now). Elio hates entering the girl's dorm, and Mari doesn't ask for things as rewards...she's much more inclined to say "lets go do this..."
A more important point, I think, is: How do you imagine the dorms are managed? Is it basically just a building where the girls live and are expected to take care of themselves as they see fit...or a more strictly controlled place with an enforced "lights out" time, room inspections to ensure the cyborgs are keeping their quarters maintained, and a list of forbidden items.
I went with the latter for my stories...but the girls are very crafty about getting around these rules & regulations.

Would the list of Forbidden Items include George Foreman grills, Soldering irons, and Coffee pots.
I've got an idea for a midnight snack scene. (It's one from when I was in college)
Jay starts cooking hotdogs on a G. Foreman grill at 1am, with a fan pointed outside to draw the smoke out of the room, afterwords he sits down and starts to read Popular Mechanics or Field and Stream, while eating hotdogs and drinking soda, most likely Mountain Dew.

Rico or Henrietta note early on that the laundry is done for them, but on occasion they like to do it themselves.
I've never gone into it, but I expect there is basic "maid service" for washing the bedding and basic vacuuming and dusting. The girls would also have clothes washing services where they leave a laundry basket say once or twice a week if they choose not to do it themselves.
Kara's stuff is pretty much "dry clean only" so I expect she relies on Michele for most of her laundry or shuttles it to and from the cleaners herself (maybe "laundry day" is when Kara takes advantage of being allowed to leave the compound on her own to make a "goodie run" for those...forbidden items... she and her sisters desire.). She also takes care of conditioning and shining her leather boots and shoes (Michele did it once for Claes after she soaked her pair, but I expect she does her own now, as well).

Re: OC Dorm Rooms
Giuse tells Pietro Fermi (in chapter 5) that Henrietta practices cooking in the dorm...and that implies some sort of heat source is allowed (I see no safety issue with an electric tea-pot, so Claes should be safe). For the purposes of your story I think it would be funnier if the aforementioned grill was a contraband item. Technically all heat producing devices were outlawed in my Air Force barracks too, but none of us gave a damn; we all had coffee makers. Grown men & women (yes, co-ed barracks) and conditioned cyborg kids are different animals though...Jacen Starslayer wrote:Would the list of Forbidden Items include George Foreman grills, Soldering irons, and Coffee pots?
You might consider substituting some variety of Italian sausage.Jay starts cooking hotdogs
Now if I was Chief Lorenzo, Mt. Dew would definately be a banned item. That much sugar & caffeine in a dormitory full of heavily armed cyborgs? Hell no.most likely Mountain Dew.
I did include a joke in my episode 10 about how much it's been costing to get the blood stains of Marisa's clothes.Kiskaloo wrote:Kara's stuff is pretty much "dry clean only"
In the real world, older girls like Kara would be afforded a bit more freedom than the younger ones (Rico, 'Etta, Marisa), but I don't know how the SWA would handle that. I tend to think Jean would set down the edict "One set of rules for everyone" The older cyborgs would chafe under such regulations, and just work harder to defy him out of spite.

Upon hearing of this petition, Jean cuts off internet access for the cyborgs as well.
In my 5th episode I implied that all sugary, caffeinated soft drinks were contraband in the dorm. Robert Frazer's ongoing Wham, Bang, Fizz P.o.W. story seems to support that. Rico sneaks off compound on a clandestine "goodies run" and a 3-litre jug of Pepsi cola (for Beatrice) is on her shopping list.

Re: OC Dorm Rooms
Alcoholic cyborgs vs over-caffinated cyborgs... I think that's a bit six of one half a dozen of the other on the "potential mayhem" stakes personally
As for how the dorms are run: I guess I'd see them as being a bit controlled, not massively (I mean, look a the amount of crap lying around Triela and Claes's room) but with the girls expected to adhere to certain levels of cleanliness etc. Canon wise, I don't think a list of contraband items is even needed... fanon wise however it's significantly more entertaining if it exists. Enforced lights out... possibly, I don't know though. I mean Monty's obviously not paying it any heed, and it'd be difficult to enforce with girls coming and going at all hours. By the same token: they're still technically kids and probably need some direction.
Monty - HOW THE HELL DO YOU EXPECT ME TO GET ANY WORK DONE!?

There's actually something along similar lines to that coming up in the next chapter
As to her rooming arrangements, I sort of pictured her being given the room more as somewhere to put stuff that won't fit in the Audi or that she doesn't need at a particular time (there's no point in having clothes for the Carribean in Siberia). Essentially most cyborgs have a bedroom that they can store things in, Monty has a store-room that she can sleep in occasionally.
I do like the idea of her just crashing in whatever happens to be available though (puts room drawing on hold whilst he goes to have a think about it).

I do like the idea of her just crashing in whatever happens to be available though.
Here I go making conjectures about other people's OC's again, but I see in Monty a quirky selfishness about her own possessions (remembering her attititde when Henrietta handled her camera), but an attitude of "what belongs to my handler is mine too" when it comes to Jethro. All cyborgs consider their handler to be theirs...Monty just extends that logic to all his stuff too.
Jethro: (looking down at Monty curled up in his bed) That doesn't help me any. Where the hell am I supposed to sleep?

Re: OC Dorm Rooms
Conjecture away (and you've pretty much hit that one on the head anyway)... I know it's good for me as it forces me to explore other avenues, take things further, or voice stuff that I'd just sort of taken for granted in a character and not really conciously built into them.
Sometimes I tend to get locked onto one idea and convice myself I've thought it through by exploring every single itteration of that idea without stepping back and looking at the bigger picture. Vesna (final year lecturer) was very good at that too, but she used to do it by starting an argument. Which would sometimes wind up with a very long and deep discussion and sometimes would end with me telling her to go away and not talk to me for a week

Re: OC Dorm Rooms
I've got Jamie and Maria sharing a room the same size as Triela & Claes's, though they have individual beds on each side of the room, and they share a desk. Individual dressers, but a shared hanging closet. Overlooks the parking lot.
It's a room I've described as the scenes have played out there.

Re: OC Dorm Rooms
Allison rooms with Petra, so they share a bunk bed. however, one side of the room has shelves jam-packed with Scale-model cars that were either purchased or assembled by Allison herself. Sometimes, this also includes R/C cars. Up near the wall where the window is, Allison also set up an IKEA entertainment center where she set up her Xbox 360, Flat-screen monitor-size HDTV, and she sits on a beanbag chair when playing. Though lately, she's been thinking about purchasing a D-Box GP200 Racing Simulator. This means, however, that she would have to move her 360 to a common area.
On the plus side, it means Marisa can practice driving with all of the realism and none of the consequences.
Meanwhile, the closet is mostly dominated by Petra's outfits, and Allison keeps hers in a footlocker.

Kara or Monty did not have gone into their handler's jackets and pull out his gun onto a respected SWA memer and possible supervisor!
Rachel did to Ferro!

Re: OC Dorm Rooms
So, after some thought I've decided to go with Voodoo's suggestion. So Monty no longer gets her own room. Instead she has a storage space and uses whatever accomodation's available during her infrequent visits. That usually sees her taking a spare room in the handler dorms. Effectively she's treating the SWA like another hotel:
*Beeping alarm
Monty *operating on just over an hours sleep - Fzuwha...
Monty *Reaches over and mashes the first directory button on the room's phone. - Hello? Front Desk? I need to order a room service breakfast...
Phone speaker - This is Ferro in the Main Office.
Monty *still on autopilot - I'll have the full continental with orange juice, triple-strength French press coffee and copies of the London Times, New York Times and the Financial Review. Charge it to the room.
I wonder though what this is going to do to her already almost non-existant cyborg social life. I can't see some of the more jelous girls being too happy that someone's sharing accomodation not just with her own handler, but with everyones' handlers (or at least those sleeping on site at the time).

Re: OC Dorm Rooms
One thing I dreamed up for the dorm, but haven't used much is a "mission closet," housing a wide variety seldom used outfits...like the costume department at a film studio. Rico's ball gown from the Tosca chapter is there...so is Marisa's catholic school uniform from the Rufina mission.
All the fratelli are free to draw from it as the missions demand, but off-duty it's officially off-limits. The cyborgs pay little attention to this rule however, helpless against the temptation of a whole room full of eclectic outfits.
_________________________________________________________________
On a different note; I see a problem with these new cyborgs installing televisions in their rooms. This just screams unintended consequences...for example...
Henrietta is staying late for extra help after Hillshire's language class...
Henrietta: I can't understand any of this Mr. Hillshire...English is really hard!
Hillshire: Don't get upset. You're doing fine with the vocabulary, it's just your syntax & conjugation that needs work. English is a very stange language that way.
Henrietta: All the nouns and the verbs are in the wrong place!
Hillshire: I know. Here's an idea...learn a song in English, and sing it whenever you get free time. It will help with your tempo and pronunciation as well.
Later on, 'Etta looks in on one of the newer girl's room. A gaggle of older cyborgs are watching a comedy movie with singing, and they are all laughing. "That must be a good song" thinks Henrietta, so she memorizes it.
Later on, she goes over to the handler's office building to see how Giuse is doing...
Henrietta: (singing) Suck my fucking dick, uncle fucker...you're a boner-biting prick, uncle fucker! You're an uncle fucker yes it's true...
Doors open all down the hall, surprised & shocked adults popping their heads out...including Chief Lorenzo.
Giuse: Henrietta! What the hell are you doing!?
'Etta: Hi Giuse, do you like my new song?
Giuse: In my office, NOW!
'Etta: (eyes tearing up) Did I do something wrong?

[Dawn cracks over the mountains east of the SWA compound. In the parking lot, Michele loads a small suitcase and Kara's PDW messenger bag in the luggage compartment of the Gallardo Spyder while Danilo puts the heavier weapons in the boot of his 740iL Protection.]
"What's keeping them?" Danilo asks, annoyance edging his voice.
"Indeed, Kara is normally a morning person - doubly so after I put that coffee maker in her room," Michele replies.
"I'm just glad you bought the single-cup model and ration them to two packets each per day," Danilo replied.
[The front doors to the Cyborg Warehouse swing open and Kara and Ilaria shuffle down the steps, reminding Michele of that gait favored by the undead. Kara comes up and fails miserably at stifling a massive yawn.]
"What's with you?" Danilo asks his cyborg.
"There was a Torchwood marathon on BBC Prime last night..." Ilaria replies, sheepishly.

I forget where it was, but Triela was stated that they were watching the news on tv, and Claes having internet access.
They dont have to have cable pumped into the tv sets, and even the air-broadcast TV can be boring after a few channels. Plus they have that mega-media theater room Jean tested Claes in.
Being Americans, Fernando and Rachel dont watch tv for there is nothing for them to see (same applies to Juanita). Francesca grew up on the streets of Rome, so TV is something she easily does without. Besides, even with satellite dish up on the roof, as Fernando says it-" 10,000 channels and STILL NOTHING TO SEE! DAMN IT!"
I seriously doubt we would see Henrieta with a glazed look on her eyes as she blankly stares at the tv, her thumb pressing the 'next channel' button on the remote.
I'm just worried about the Dormitory snack bar...

Probably mostly of use/temptation for the younger girls. I'm trying hard to imagine Kara, Monty, or even Petra's reaction at being asked to wear something not tailor made (or at least bought) for them and them alone...

Re: OC Dorm Rooms
As I figure it in my universe, each room has a small closet and ad wall unit/shelf set up in it. Between the wall unit/shelf and closet is where the cyborgs have their own person items, weapons and the weapon's maintenance kits. A dresser provides space for tiny things.
Now, some place else in the compound (probably in the basement of the dorms), is where mission stuff is kept, including wardrobe. In fact, for those handlers too cheap to buy their girls new clothing, there is a stash of clothes there, left overs from donations to other agencies. This was pointed out when Rachel arrived at the SWA Compound with nothing but the hospital gown she was wearing. Instead of getting clothes from the donations box, Fernando bought her all new stuff.
Other things kept in the basement includes: 2 way radio sets, Long Arms (like sniper rifles), disguise kits, assorted mission clothing (like the maids' uniforms), explosives (like the flash/bang grenades), etc...

Even though Kara at times comes across as flighty and flakey, in the end she has been conditioned and trained to be a professional which makes her a pragmatist. And when the mission calls for "off the rack" clothing, she holds her nose and dons the outfit.

Modeled by Chiaki Kudou
Of course, that doesn't mean she is happy about it...
