The old "I have a family" excuse

Post by West Nile on Thu 20 Nov 2008 - 10:40

so here's the scenario:

your OC has a guy cornered (innocent target or mafia boss: up to you) as he/she trains his/her gun on his forehead he blurts out:

"Please, I have a wife... and kids!!!"

What would your OC do... what would he/she say?

If it really came to my OC Thomas standing in front of a Mafia guy, ready to kill me.

Thomas would respond: "So do I." *Slices Mafia boss head off*

Honestly though, Thomas didn't kill the mafia boss he fought, because he didn't to deny the boss his daughter what he never had... A Loving father...

alright, i think il add another thing here, two scenarios, having to kill an innocent guy scenario and having to kill an Ųbvious bad guy"

ex.

Innocent bystander witnessing an assassination: Please, i have a family...
Lance: That's too bad *bang*

Mafia guy: I have a wife... and kids...
Lance: looking at your current predicament, they're better off without you *bang*

either of the two: I have a family!
Mina: *i don't get why he is saying this, ow well* *bang*

innocent bystander: I have a family!
Ella: orders sir?
Hilshire: let him be...
Ella: yes sir *puts gun down* *raises it up again and shoots him in the leg*
Hilshire: Ella!! didn't i give you orders?
Ella: well your orders suck

Mafia guy: I have a family!
Ella: and your point is? *bang*

either of the two: I have a family
Sophia: tell it someone who cares *bang*

Either of the two: I have a family.
Anica: Family??? *breaks down in tears*

Innocent bystander: I have a family
Fei: i await your orders sir
Iroh: shakes head
Fei: yes sir.

Mafia guy: I hava a family
Fei: I await your orders sir
Iroh: get rid of him
Fei: too bad i never had one though *bang*

It almost seems like the girls have a "light-switch" mentality when it comes to combat operations. When they're "deployed" they just become "Terminators" and coolly ('Etta excepted) carry out their mission. To quote Kyle Reese from the first film - "It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear.". But when they're done, and the operation is complete, the switch "resets back" and they're little girls again.

Michele has drilled into Kara to know her shot before she takes it. But he also drilled into her that when you have to take a life, you take it.

When it comes to the target, Kara wouldn't even respond. She'd just kill him.

When it comes to an innocent, it depends on the Rules of Engagement:
  • If the RoE says "no witnesses" then there will be no witnesses, depending on the situation and her tactical position. If it's one person, then she kills them. If it's a score (public place), well she knows she won't be able to carry it out and she's not going to just shoot who she can and then run, because that would make the situation far, far worse. So she'd just eliminate the target and extricate herself.
  • If the RoE says "witnesses" then Kara will let them live. She'd probably knock them unconscious (if in a position to do so) to allow her escape, otherwise she'd just extricate herself from the area.

In Christenings, she was in a gun battle with a PRF leader in the Piazza della Signoria in the center of Florence witnessed by a couple hundred people. She waited until she had a clear shot and put a round into him (ended up wounding him, but that was sufficient at the time). If necessary, she'd have carried him out slung over her back like a dressed deer, but an SWA van arrived and she tossed him into it and they escaped as the first Carabinieri units responded.

OK lets see...

The bystander solution:

Innocent bystander: Please, i have a family...

Frederick: ...Damn how I wish that MIB flash-thing-a-majig is available right now. Sorry sir... this'll hurt a bit but I swear you won't remember a thing...

*WHACK*
*THUD*

Frederick: ...maybe a little too hard. Hope he remember himself later.

Mafia: Please I have a wife...and kids...

Frederick: Give me a good reason why I shouldn't shoot you other than
that
.

*further responds would eventually end up the guy getting shot anyway*

Unless his responds go...

Mafia: I have valuable intel...

Frederick: Oh really? Great! You just said the right answer

*WHACK*
*THUD*

Frederick: (on radio) Hillshire, I need an extraction. Yeah, just bagged fat fish...I think some operatives would love to 'play' with him later in the Agency.

Lemme see har!!

In the scenario of "I have a family":

Mafioso or other random bad guy: Please, please don't kill me.
Alpha: ...
Mafioso or RBG: I have a wife and...and 6 kids.
Alpha: ...
Mafioso or RBG: Please, I'll change. I'LL CHANGE!!!
Alpha: Now where have I heard that one before. (BANG)

***

In the scenario of innocent bystander:

Alpha would do nothing. He might glance over at the bystander, but then would lift his hood over his head (from either a sweatshirt or his trenchcoat) and walk away. As a contractor, he enjoys his reputation as a quintessential ghost.

Bystander - Keetha would ignore him/her completely (by that I don't mean that she would kill them, rather that she would pretend that they didn't exist).

Bad guy - Depends. If she's surrounded, little chance of escaping without killing, she'd go for the kill. Self-preservation.
However, if she can get both sides out alive, though not necessarily in good condition, she'd try that. In other words, a case of knocking them out or if necessary shooting them in a limb or the like.

Saying "Please, I have a wife... and kids!!!" would probably piss off Muffin more than it will do good, and result in them being beaten to death or have a few limb chopped off.

But if you want Muffin to act like a smartass...

Whoever: *shows photograph* Please, I have a wife... and kids!!!
Muffin: *takes photograph* This your family?
Whoever: *nods*
Muffin: *pockets photograph* I'll be sure to kill them once I'm done with you.

Whoever: "Please, I have a wife... and kids!!!"
Muffin: Then I'm gunna kill ya, skin ya, and hang your corpse upside down from a tree in front of their house

That's rather hard and somewhat unbelievable for a character as cute as Muffin...although strangely it does suit her well.

In the case of an innocent bystander, as Kiskaloo said, it all depends on the rules of engagement. They'd be let go, taken hostage, or shot dead depending upon previous orders.

As for a target slated for termination, or a hostile target of opportunity... I doubt the gun would be pointed at 'em long enough for them to protest. Once they're in the sights, there would be no hesitation, hence:

Target: "Plea-"
*BANG*

I like to think I speak for most of the canon characters in this one as well. Certainly Rico, probably Henrietta and Angelica... Triela's a bit iffy on this one, being less inclined to cold-blooded assassination.

I agree, but Triela is just as deadly as anyother GsG. Its Hillshire's missions of "Bring'em Back Alive For Questioning" that holds her back and constantly gets her into trouble. No doubt if in the original encounter with Pinochio, she was told to taken them out, there would be no doubt in my mind that she would have like she did that building of Albanians and their Padania coherts in the first episode.

Good point. Triela had the drop on Pino and Franco and could have blown them away before they even knew she was there.

I think Triela probably has some pretty contradictory feelings. Sheís obliviously a very compassionate girl and has enough control over her mind to know that killing is wrong, but at the same time she feels that it justifies her existence. Hopefully vol.10 helped to change her way of thinking.

Triela certainly doesn't kill for the sake of killing when she has other options and the mission is not a sanction. We've seen her move to disarm and disable opponents as opposed to killing them on at least a few occasions, even when shooting them likely would have been more prudent.

Then again, it could just be build. Triela is the physically oldest and tallest Gen1, so she's likely in the best position to actually perform unarmed CQC even before she underwent advanced training by the GIS. Henrietta, for example, all her strength aside, would probably have somewhat of a tough time due to her small stature. Same with Elsa. Claes, Rico and Angelica are probably average (we've seen at least the first two do it in the anime and manga - not sure about Angelica), but they to go for their guns most of the time.

As to whether this is because Triela is "compassionate", I don't know. Where does "compassion" come from? Is it environmental? Behavioral? If so, their lifestyle would, IMO, tend to not engender the development of such feelings. And I believe Triela has noted she has no conscious memories of her life before waking up in the medical ward (after a year of hypnotic treatment, this makes sense to me).

I am inclined to put it down to training. Hillshire was a policeman. As such, he wouldn't be a "shoot first" kind of person by training. He was upset at Triela for shooting that suspect in the shoulder in Chapter 3, but Triela shot him in the shoulder specifically to not kill him, just restrain him. And yet in the same chapter she had no compunction about gunning down the Mafioso trying to detain Bossi.

So I think Hillshire has probably tried to instill in Triela "levels of engagement" - general, flexible rules to help define how she should respond in different situations. Where possible, I would expect them to be non-lethal (like when she defeats the assassination attempt on Prosecutor Guellfii).

Triela does what Hillshire tells her to do, and she does it to the best of her ability. It if means bringing them in alive, alive they will be though busted up and holed like swiss cheess are included in that option. It is in these cases that the subject has to be brought back alive, does Triela act this way. In the case of Epi-2:Bambola, when Mario was going to be carted away by the mafia, Triela was not so hestitant in killing everyone, but was cautious not to get Mario hurt. Keeping Maario alive- as per Hillshire's orders, was the key to this. Eariler in the Episode, when she caught another that needed to be caught alive, when he reached for his gun, she let him have it with a less than leathal shot with a bullet through his lung. That angered Hillshire because now there was a mess to clean up, even though it many have saved his life in the process. But Triela had to deal with that anger...

Rethink. Episode 4:Pasta Prince. Angie took on 8 (or so) bad guys in under 3 seconds. Later on, she took on Amedeo and Giorgio when they decided to knife fight outside of her door. Though her arm was badly cut, she won that fight- a fight against two military speical ops and she was unarmed. All the girls are more or less configured as Angie as their template, so they all have this fighting capability within them. It is how their handlers want them to express it that makes all the difference. How else would have Henrietta would have handled a Bouncing Betty?

Conditioning and Hillshire's training. Other than that, being one of the lesser conditioning medicine dosed cyborgs, she it more free thinking than lets say.... Rico!

Now you're getting it!
But the issue here is this fexiabilty is a problem for a gunslinger. To them its a kill or be killed world. If they have to think about, "well Jose/Jean/Marco/Rabello said to bring one of them alive, but which one?!!!" they would all be in as much trouble or more trouble than Triela has ever had. At least Triela the experience through Hillshire to bring the 'intelligent looking one.'

If it was a mafia boss, here's what would happen with MY characters

Maifa Boss: Please! I have a wife and children!
Clarissa: In that case, they're better off without you then mafia scum!
(BLAM!)

Mafia Boss: Please! I have a wife and children!
Anastasia: So did many of your victims so why should I spare you?!
(BLAM!)

Innocent Bystander: Please! I have a wife and children!
Clarissa: (sighs then simply whacks him on the head and sees if the Agency can erase or alter his memories of that incident. If they can't, THEN she'll kill him after saying sorry.)

Innocent Bystander: Please! I have a wife and children!
Anastasia: (the same thing as Clair because she doesn't want to kill innocent people unless she has to despite her snobbish personality.)

Hmmm Max would likely do this:

Mob boss or inoccent bystander: Pleas!!!..I...I have a wife and kids!!!.

Max: I...I hate familys!!!. *BOOM in both legs, as he falls to the floor he shoots his hands, then a shot to the stomach and last but not least Max steps on his neck hard untill he bleeds out.

For mine they wouldn't have a chance. Those two go for clean quick shots to the brainstem or chest so we don't have much time to empathize with the poor sod on the floor.

In fact, this is taught to most Hostage Rescue Teams (or whatever your country calls them) not only because they have to put the guy down fast, it's also because it lessens the psychological impact of having to watch a human that could have been your son / buddy / daughter / whatever you can think of die at your feet.

How would my OCs? React? Well...

I-CARE CAST

I-CARE's MO is to take enemies alive when they can for interrogation. However, they do have a problem...

Take-1

Dead-Guy: Please! I have a wife and children!
Wilfred: You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be-
*BANG*
Iris: BOOM, HEAD-SHOT!
Wilfied: *Mouth Gaping*

Take-2

Dead-Guy: Please! I have a wife and children!
Victoria: ...you're lucky I'm taking you in. Someone read him his rights.
Elisabeth: Er... You have the... how does it go aga-?
*BANG*
Iris: BOOM, HEAD-SHOT!
Victoria:
IRIS!

Take-3

(Not So) Dead-Guy: Please! I have a wife and children!
Sylvia: ...Iris doesn't come within ten feet of our captive.
St-1: *Salutes*

OTHER

Megumi
Probably would incapacitate the target and await further instructions from her Goshujin-sama regardless of pleading. Considering her environment, attacking people randomly would be a quick way to bring out the dreaded Harisen, let alone blowing them away.

Rebecca

probably would kill the sap even with his/her pleading. Or capture him/her and let Yolanda decide how to deal with the captive. This IS the Church of Violence we're talking about.

Post by Robert Frazer on Sat 18 Jul 2009 - 5:42

This is actually one scenario that's I'm intending to deal with in a an upcoming story (assuming that I ever get the time to write it!), which features Agapita struggling to reoncile the religious belief that Avise inculcates in her with the bloody work that the Agency demands.

In this situation, Agapita recalls that Jesus said that those who "live by the sword, die by the sword"; take up arms if you wish (Christ wasn't implacably opposed to armies, telling soldiers to be content with their pay and not take bribes, etc., but not throw down their weapons altogether), but when you do so you are abandoning protections; you are conscious of and must be prepared to accept the consequences, including death. Consequently, Agapita would probably respond "you can't have cared for your family that much, otherwise you wouldn't have even been here!" and follow through with the order.

Francesca would not care in mission mode and manually insert a bullet into the bastard's head before he could finish his sentence.

Act 1 - Mafia, bad guy, cornered, whatever
Act 2 - Some random, unlucky guy

-Act1-
Mafia: Please, don't kill me! I have a wife...and children! And a girlfriend...and more children!
Anna: Oh shucks. Fine. Go ahead; I'll forgive you this time.
Mafia: Really?
Anna: Out of my sight...!
(Mafia runs off for about 20 steps)

*BANG*

Anna: ...or not.

-Act II-
Guy: ...HIII~!!! Don't kill me....!! I have a wife...and children!
Anna: I'm sure you do. Everyone does. So what difference does it make me if I kill you?
Guy: ...you're gonna left my family to die?

....Mafia guy: You--you're a cop! You're a detective! You can't threaten me, or my family, like that!
....Ehud: Shame then. I am part of other agency. We do things... how do you say? Dirty... to get job done. I can always ask you questions later, but Maria, James, and Lukas...

Innocent Bystander: !!!
Ehud: *pulls out badge* Europol.

Mission Briefing: If you see any civilians, kill them.
Ehud: Sorry, but, I am here to protect public, not kill public. If we have to have bolls to shoot persons, then this plan has flaws, too many. You did very sloppy job at this. Even Mossad can do better, and their budget is a lot lower than yours.

Re: The old "I have a family" excuse

Post by Professor Voodoo on Sat 27 Feb 2010 - 17:27

Took me a while to concoct an answer...hope this isn't too grim.

Marisa kicked the last door down and scanned the room for her target. "There he is" she thought, eyeing 2 shoes at the base of the draperies. Careful not to fall victim to the oldest trick in the book, she waited until Elio was there to watch her back, then approached with caution. She threw the drapes back, never taking her Beretta off the target. This time there was no trick, it really was him.

"Wait! Please don't shoot...I have a wife, and 2 children!" begged the target.
Mari was about to put 2 slugs into his heart when she heard her handler's voice behind her. "Hold your fire Marisa." Puzzled, She risked turning her head to give him a glance, but quickly returned her attention to the target.

"Sir...I'll do anything...I'm just an apprentice" he pleaded.
"Apprentice to a cleaner who is complicit to over 25 murders...he's already dead if you're wondering" Elio growled "You say you have a family? Do you have a cell phone?" He pressed his pistol against the target's forehead, so hard that it hurt.
"Y-y-yes!" stammered the man, still holding his hands up. Alboreto fished through the pockets of his sport coat and found it.
"Marisa, wait in the hall" he ordered.
"But Elio!"
The hander turned to his trainee and hissed through his teeth "Now!"

Once Marisa was gone Elio took the silver Motorola phone and thrust it into the hand of its owner. "Call your wife."
"Huh?"
"I said call your fucking wife" Elio barked, "I'm offering you a chance to talk to her...or you can just have the bullet right away." He knocked the target down to his knees, and pressed the Beretta to the back of his head. "Any funny business and she gets to hear the slug enter your skull."
The target looked at him, the finality of his own imminent end sinking in. He chose to dial.

A sleepy voice answered; "Hello?"
"Deborah, it's Fausto..."
"Fausto!" she exclaimed, "Where have you been!? It's been 3 days, I'm getting worried!"
"Deborah, I don't have much time...I want you to know I love you."
"Don't have much time for what? Fausto, you're scaring me!"
"I'm sorry Deborah, I'm mixed up with a lot of terrible things that I can't take back."
"Fausto, whatever you've done, we can work it out! Please let me help you!"
"It's too late for that, " he wept, "tell Umberto & Gabrielle that Daddy will always love them, and I'm sorry I can't be there to see them grow up...and tell my Mother I'm sorry I couldn't be the man she & Dad raised me to be."
"Fausto, what's going on!?" shouted his wife, over the phone.
He took a deep breath and sighed, "Deborah, I love you..." and ended the call.

Elio did not wait, and draw this out any further. The second he heard the telephone disconnect he fired a 9mm bullet straight into the back of Fausto's skull. For a few moments, all was silent.

A board creaked, and Alboreto turned to see Marisa spying from the doorway. She tried to jump back out of sight, but realized that she'd been caught red-handed, disobeying his orders. "Sorry Elio..."
"It's alright lass." sighed the grey haired man.
"So...was that the right answer?" asked the cyborg, her voice full of uncertainty.
"I just don't know" he replied. "If you had just shot him right away that would have been perfectly alright, those were your orders." Elio put his left arm around her shoulders and pulled her close to him for a few seconds. Mari liked that, it reassured her. "Okay, let's get him rolled up in this carpet and get him down to the van. We've still got 4 more to do before we can knock off tonight."
As for the innocent bystander, that's trickier. Marisa's first instinct would be to kill them, but not if it's a bad idea (i.e. It would attract more problems than it would alleviate). She did not kill an Algerian family that provided aid during her nearly-botched mission to Paris.
Elio...he's done a lot worse in the past.

As for innocent witnesses. Well if there's witnesses then something's gone wrong, which means Monty's probably already at least a little ticked:

I'm not sure how Daniella would react (if I ever finish that fic....) but David, would probably do something like this:

If bystander:

Bystander: "I have a wife and kids, please, spare me"
David: (hands him a 1000 Euro note he "liberated from a dead Global Military Solutions merc) "Nothing happened here. Understood?"

If terrorist:
Terrorist: (same line as bystander)
David: "Your lucky I disapprove of killing prisoners. And a bit of advice, I suggest you change you career, terrorism's about to get a lot less profitable!"

If GMS mercenary:
Merc: (says the old wife and kids line)
David: Fortunately for you, I don't approve of killing prisoners, even bastards like you who'll fight for anyone for the right price. I'd recomend you hand in your letter of resignation and seek another job. Now get out of here before I change my mind!"

For mine well lets see

Bad guy: Please don't kill me
Adeline: (puts gun to the head) Why should I let you live?
Bad guy: I got a wife and four kids! Please don't kill me...
Adeline: (shoves gun in mouth) Your words sicken me (shoots him)

For a very lightly conditioned cyborg like Jordan, I think it'll go differently

Bad guy: Please don't kill me
Jordan: (raises M4)
Bad guy: I have a wife and four kids
Jordan: What?
Bad guy: Come on, you got to let me live. For them, think of the children?
Jordan: (hesitates)
Daniel: (comes in and shoots down the guy for her) There. Lets go
Jordan: (nods and goes on)

Daniel loves Jordan so much that he would just do it himself, though he wouldn't like it.

I think for the civilian they'd either pay them of for just be on their way.
