I suppose you bludgeon someone to death with one of hand-written monk's ones. They're pretty big and heavy.

I could just see Rico going at it, screaming "The power of Christ compels you! The power of Christ compels you!"

I believe that in the Anime, Jean mentions a dictionary instead of a bible, right?

Anyway, a hard cover Bible.. huh... Seriously talking, how can you kill somebody with a book? A wouldn't expect more than a concussion...

A good whack to about 3 fingers below the base of the skull with a bible will kill them.
Or stuff the pages down their throats...

A whack to the temple could kill them if hit hard enough, but the girls can do it.

To be honest, you should sit down and read Grey's Anatomy. Its a hard but excellent read.

Anything dropped from a great height can kill. Troops not wearing proper head protection have died when struck by spent casings that fell from high-flying helicopter gunships.

No that sounds like a myth for the Mythbusters. I just don't see the terminal velocity being high enough...

Anyway LOL at the image of Rico bashing a guy with a bible while yelling "The power of Christ compels you!"

Did I say gunships, Wil? I apologize - I meant fighter planes. I just looked up the article in question, and must correct myself; the incident in question occured on English soil during the Battle of Britain. The poor sods in question were Home Guard troops, and the casings were 20mm shells from Bf 109s.

There are so many variants of the Bf-109. The most comonly known would be the Bf 109 G-6.
This one had 2 MG 131(13 mm Machinegun) and a nose cone mounted MG 151/20 (20 mm Cannon)
with the option to mount 2 MG 151/20 cannon pods.

But I have seen variants that have up to 4 MG 17's (7.92 mm machine guns)

Wow that sucks...

Battle of Britain, was it? Heh, whoever the pilot of that BF109E-4/7 TROP (figure its 1941, this should be flying.) might consider drawing a stickman with a soup helmet in the tail in place of other insignia/kill marks.

That counts as a kill...sorta.

Okay, that doesn't actually help in my book. First of all I was figuring 20mm shell as the extreme possibility. Apaches run a 30mm chain gun, and the hind has two fixed 20mm in addition to it's turret. I'm still dubious about terminal velocity of a 20mm shell casing. More then that your now talking about a fighter plane. Modern fighters don't throw spent shells overboard, there is to much risk the engine could ingest the casing and destroy itself. Now maybe in WW-II era fighters it was different, but I wouldn't be surprised to find out there was the same issue with propellers. Certainly a wing man wouldn't like flying through the leads brass...

To the best of my knowledge, Wil, all WWII fighter planes ejected their brass.

I don't have access to a scanner here, so I can't make a copy of the article, which is on paper. It's basically an interview with several Home Guard troopers of the time about their experiences during those months when Operation Sealion was a very real threat - they merely mention the incident in passing without going into any kind of deep detail ("A friend of ours was killed when a spent 20mm shell from a Hun fighter fell on his head from way up there. Just as he had his steel pot off, too. Freakish incident, I know... but I suppose such things can and do happen. He apparently wasn't the only one of our boys who bought it this way").

What I can provide as a reference, though, is an academic paper studying similar occurences (namely incidents of rifle bullets falling to earth and killing people after being fired up into the air). I've uploaded it to this address, which you can access the thing from:

rapidshare.com 283.pdf.html

And where the Mythbusters are concerned, this second link might interest you:

http://kwc.org/mythbusters/2006/04/episode_50_bullets_fired_up_vo_1.html

While the incidents being studied here aren't identical to the example I describe, I think they are similar enough for vaild comparisons to be made.

It's possible I suppose, but until I see some hard data on the terminal velocity of a 20mm casing I saying nothing. I have though submitted this one to the Myth Busters. You never now.

Statistically, anything is possible.

So while there is documented evidence of a shell casing killing a man, the physics imply that such an outcome would be the aberration and not the norm.

that's the same trap the Mythbusters fell into on the bullet myth:
Annotated Mythbusters wrote:The "all of the above" ruling on the bullets fired into the air myth was a new one for MythBusters. All of their tests showed that if you fire a bullet perfectly straight up into the air, it will not kill you as it will fall down on its side and have too low of a terminal velocity to kill, much like the Penny Drop myth. However, it is very difficult to fire perfectly straight into the air and they even found an international expert in falling bullets who was able to confirm for them that people have died from bullets fired up into the air.
At first, they didn't account for the fact that most bullets fired into the air would be fired at an angle, arcing like an artillery shell and not shedding all of their forward momentum.

A 20mm casing dropped out of a moving fighter plane would carry forward a significant portion of said fighter plane's velocity (unlike a gunship, which would most likely be firing from a stationary position), especially if it ejected straight down, which would be the best way to avoid having the shell hit any other part of the plane.

So... terminal velocity is an important measurement involved in figuring this out, but it's far from the only one you'd need.

I think the bigger question here would be rate of descent. Even a three gram ball bearing can become lethal when dropped from ten thousand feet.

a three gram ball bearing has a really aerodynamic profile... a spent 20mm casing has a big ol' hollow part for potential wind resistance, and even at its most aerodynamic (rounded side of the cylinder), it has a terrible weight:surface area ratio.

Also, the Mythbusters pretty well proved that terminal velocity for a 9x19 para or a 30.06 bullet (both about 150 feet per second) could pretty much only be lethal due to it hitting in an extremely sensitive location... kinda like a BB.
