I read the book ages ago. Very Happy Saw it last weekend (unfortunately I had to take my little sister and her friends with me) and it was absolutely amazing. I love that style of animation.

Doth mine eyes deceive me?

You called Coraline, a children's movie based on a children's novella.... emo?

Surely you jest? *hides knife*

Surely...

Guh?

Anyways, just because Tim Burton had a hand in it, and it's in claymation does not make it emo. Do yourself a favor and go see this movie in 3-D before it's too late.

Matter 'o fact: The theater was full of parents with their kids. Not a single emo group to be found.

Edited because Tim Burton had nothing to do with this movie.

NOOOOOO! You have to see it in 3-D! The creators intended it to be that way, and it shows! In fact, I think several scenes in the movie wouldn't work as well in the normal film.

Admittedly, the first few minutes of the film were just me gasping as the sheer beauty of it all, and my the middle of the film, I'd forgotten about the 3-D effects... until the climax and ending scens brought me back.

Do you folks have those high-end theaters that are more like up-sized home theaters with about 18 leather recliners and they bring you food and drink? It's digital projection (so I believe it supports 3D) and it's nice and cozy.

It's expensive ($15 for the ticket plus whatever you spend on goodies), but it's really a great way to see a movie. And since there are only a handful of movies that will get me into a theater (right now I'm looking at only going for Coraline, Watchmen, Star Trek and Harry Potter this year), overall the expense doesn't end up being too horrendous. And if you have enough friends (18) interested in the same theater, you can rent the whole thing out just for the price of the seats, which we are doing for Watchmen and Star Trek at the moment.

$15 ain't bad, really.

The prices here in Long Beach goes as follows (for stadium seating theaters):

General admission = $11.95
Child admission = $9.95
General admission for 3-D movies = $13.95
Child admission for 3-D movies = $11.95
Senior citizen admission (does not count for 3-D movies) = $9.95

Pretty fuck up, eh?

And don't get me started on the snacks... oy...

If I had the option of paying $15 to get premium seats like the one you described, I'd go for it.

I saw the 3-D version last weekend. Very well done for the most part (...a couple of slight moments of jerkiness when Coraline walks during a couple of scenes was distracting but I loved the film anyway...). I plan on going to see it again this afternoon.

Yeah, I hate theaters also. But, the 3-D works very well for this film, which is why I'm going to see it again. I'll eventually pick it up on DVD but I doubt that seeing it in 2-D will work quite as nicely.

@kisk:
well there's this place, but it's still set up somewhat like stadium seating, and the prices are outrageous. In short... hate it.

alternately, there's this, which is about the only theater I actually enjoy going to. It's set up in what used to be an elementary school gymnasium... with couches, chairs and tables that you're free to rearrange as you please, and a full service bar/restaurant right outside.
on the downside, while the screen and sound system are decent (better than a lot of theaters I've been to), they don't show new movies, and the place is too big for 3D to work well. The feel of it is more akin to one of those old drive-in theaters than a conventional stadium seating one. Probably why I like it so much.

Why people think Burton had anything to do with it I will never understand.

Likely the stop-motion animation aspect of it, since he was behind the SMA Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride.

To be honest, I thought he directed it, as well, because of the SMA.

I believe you can generally get 3D versions (of films that were shown in the cinema in 3D) on DVD, but I'm not entirely certain about that. Regardless, if you do manage to get your hands on a copy in 3D, all you need is some 3D glasses and it'll work just fine Very Happy

Speaking of which, I have a game that you can play in 3D. Trackmania (the latest one, I can't remember the full name) Razz

Yes you can. I have a few DVDs of IMAX films that includes both a 2D and the original 3D prints. Watching the 3D print with 3D glasses gives you most of the 3D effect (especially when upconverted on an HDTV).

Real D cinema runs at 144 frames per second. I doubt a Dvd can store that much data.

I also doubt the majority of people out there own a TV/projector that can actually display the kind of picture that the theater's projector can.

Edit: Really, Kisk? What movie would that be? I'd like to try it myself.... here's hoping that Coraline is released on Blu-Ray with 3-D format.

You realise that the human eye can't even process a fraction of that, right? Scale it down a bit (maybe to 50 fps or so? I'm not certain on the exact figures) and you honestly wouldn't see a difference Razz

Plus, that's what Blu-Ray is for Very Happy

yup. three separate images at 48fps... and a double layer DVD could hold a 90 minute movie like that if ya de-rez it a little and leave off the bonus features. 9.4 gigs is no small amount of information.

But I'm not really interested in the red-blue glasses-kind-of-3D: I'd rather watch the film in 2-D than watch a crappy 3-D version. I don't think that Real D has a system for home viewing.

it's true, 27GB > 9.4GB

...but seriously... that's the difference between Blu Ray and DVD. finer laser=more data=higher resolutions. Personally, I think a 27 gig disc is wasted by containing only one movie... can't wait 'til they start developing the next type of movie disc and blu ray media gets cheap...

I saw Coraline as soon as I got a chance to and I must say, IT WAS AWESOMEZ-EXTREMUS!!

My favorite character was actually 'Other' Wybie. Seeing his remains actually made me choke up, but my absolute favorite part was during the 'performance' where the big-tittied actress was wearing hardly anything and Coraline says something along the lines of, "Oh, dear god." Those were my sentiments exactly and I actually had to cover my mouth, I was laughing so hard.

So after enjoying myself at Air France's delivery party for their first 777 Freighter, I went and saw Coraline in 3D. Excuse me for sounding like a little girl, but:

OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! THAT WAS ONE OF THE COOLEST MOVIES EVER!

Seriously, that was simply an amazing movie on every level. And yes, it has to be seen in 3D. It would look good in 2D, but it really gains something in 3D.

I also have to admit I cannot wait to see Monsters vs. Aliens in 3D based on the astounding 3D trailer.

And I wish 1000 Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes (preferably U-NO-POO and Decoy Detonaters) on Warner Brothers marketing department for making me wait till July 2009 for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince instead of the original November 2008 release.
