Chiara and Silvia

Post by Kiskaloo on Sun 15 Feb 2009 - 20:13

Chapter 60 introduces two new Gunslinger Girls: Silvia (シルヴィア Shiruvia) on the left and Chiara (キアーラ Kiaara) on the right.

So far, all we know is that they were sent to Venice with Beatrice, Triela, Rico, Henrietta and Petrushka.

Looking through my collection of Gunslinger Girl images, I came across this wallpaper. The girl on the right kind of looks like Chiara, don't you agree?

NOTE - It appears to be from the eroge game Bittersweet Fools, which Yu Aida was the character designer for.

I'm actually a hardcore otaku who likes maids more than having three meals in a day and I only read books related to maids. Also, I only visit maid cafes. Of course I also collect maid figurines, I play games which feature maids and it turns me on so much that I'll wear the maid uniforms and jump in joy.

I think it is possible that the girl with dark hair with her back to us on Page 9 of Chapter 18 is Chiara:

As an aside, I believe the girl walking into the room is Beatrice.

You also see the girl from behind on Page 10:

Well she isn't Silvia nor is she any of the other three girls we saw with Petrushka. She may be the "tenth" Series 1 we have yet to be shown (assuming the girl walking into the dining room is Beatrice), one of the six yet to be seen Series 2 girls or she might very well have been a "design study" of Silvia and Yu changed her when he decided to draw her in Chapter 60.

I have read it days ago and have seen the new marionettes but I do not understand if they are of the first generation or the second. I believe that Kiskaloo has reason, Chiara seem appeared in Chapter 18, seem she.
They is two of the ten children of first generation (but is only ten?)?. Are they two children of firs generation or are of second generation? As other marionettes have been created and not introduced, of the second generation could have been created one cyborg or more. Bice appears in new chapter but I do not understand is a figure in order to fill up the scene or Aida uses they to the fine like protagonist. Petra is now protagonist of the manga like Henrietta and the others, but Bice and now Silvia and Chiara? He does not explain nothing of this cyborg (you see Bice), why? I hope that Silvia and Chiara became the fixed personages of manga. Interesting is to see other marionettes and their living from cyborg. Petra to me does not appeal but she is introduced a lot because she is the prototype of the second generation. But to see other children is interesting. From the ace Silvia is to me likeable XD

If Chiara and Silvia are Series 1 cyborgs, they may be present specifically because the mission looks to be storming the clock tower and the Series 1 girls appear to be better suited for such missions due their implied superior armoring and their smaller stature making them harder targets.

Petrushka is present in Venice and the first part of the chapter focuses on her, but I would not be surprised if she and Alessandro are there for recon and intelligence-gathering and will not take part in the actual assault.

It is possible the Series 2 girls were not meant for close-quarters gunfire combat in the sense of clearing a safe house or such. Their role, being older, may very well be how we see Petrushka being employed with Alessandro - non-combat support roles. Considering how Special Operations Section One doesn't get along with them, it's possible that they are not being as supportive as they could be and the Series 2 girls were designed to perform missions that Section 2 originally depended on Section 1 to provide and/or support.

The cyborgs were created for doing various mission roles which their handlers can not fulfill on their own, which is mostly combat. Now, combat comes in all forms, styles and colours. The Type 2s may not be capable in combat missions as the Type 1s are, but the Type 1s are being phased out, leaving the Type 2s to fill that role in the future.

And here lies the problem.

Chiara and Silvia seem to be Type 1s. At this point in time, the Type 2s- inclluding Petrushka, are incapable of CQC due to their training alone.

I'd say that they're likely to die in the coming mission, except that their characters would have to developed for it to be particularly tragic.

That's one advantage of having supermen as your footsoldiers, though - you can't just have a simple redshirt. Even if they're only there to die, just random bullets in the background aren't going to be enough - unless a lucky shot hits them square in the eye, in order to be killed outright they have to be walloped by something spectacular, such as being blown to smithereens by a massive mine or squelched to paste by the treads of a tank running flat-out. In Gunslinger Girl, even the disposable cannon fodder get to go out with a bang! Smile

All I'm saying is that Silvia better not hit the bucket soon: in a story I'm writing the main character's name is Silvio. Total coincidence, I swear.

I'm really interested in these characters; it'd be a shame (not to mention bad writing) to see them killed off early.

Since I havn't read it,are we sure that unlike beatrice who just appeared in one chapter and then basicly disapeared these girls will get proper developement?

What I don't get is what is stopping 2nd gen girls from being younger? Is it something in the process or is it just a choice by the SWA?

With the death of Angelica, Beatrice is now a regular character. She's appeared in every chapter of Volume 11 so far. Yu also wrote her into the anime adaption of Chapter 18 (-Il Teatrino- Episode 8)

The purpose of the second generation cyborg program was to advance the cybernetics to the point they could be used in older children in the outside world. At 16, Petrushka was said to be towards the outer age they wanted to use, but she did score 930 (out of I assume 1000) which meant she was very adaptable to the augmentation.

My personal belief is the Series 1 girls are all between 9 and 11 when they were converted, with the exception of Triela (who was likely around 12-13). So the Series 2 girls would likely be 13 to 16.

It's a design decision. The narrative right back on Vol. One Page One states that the first-generation cyborgs had to be young, because the relatively underdeveloped prosthetics and conditioning procedures could only effectively bed in and take hold on similarly undeveloped bodies and immature minds. The increasing age of the second-generation girls is also a sign of increasing technological sophistication, reducing circumstantial limitations on where the devices can be deployed. Ultimately, the Agency hopes that its techniques will be universally and unconditionally applicable; usable by everyone, including adults.

EDIT: Whoops, Kiskaloo beat me to the punch! ^^;

True. In chapter 30, Louis tells Sandro, In the future they wanna be able to use this on adults, safely and cheaply, so

Kind of fucked up when you think about the fact that they experimenting with children to meet their ultimate goal.

I always thought the goal for adapting it to adults was to create prosthetic devices for rehabilitative use in the general population, not to make adult cyborg combatants?

The manga seems to imply that civilian children are receiving the same basic augmentations that the girls have (likely at a reduced level of capability). Angelica's second cousin had his leg replaced with a cybernetic one and Director Petris told Chairwoman D'Angelo that one day she would walk again thanks to the work being done on girls like Henrietta. Lorenzo also informed D'Angelo that Italian cybernetic research was the best in the world and it showed a picture of a young boy trying out his new cybernetic leg.

Don't think anybody's been implying adult combatants at all...

By what Louis said, adult combatants are their ultimate goal. I think the Agencys work does benefit society, but thats secondary to their dirty work.

I expect it serves as both a cover and as a source of income. In Chapter 59, we learn that Section 2 has a budget and it is starting to run out...

Like any government, agency and organizational operation, budgets are based on yearly plans. If the SWA Section 2 budget is runnning out, it is only the allotted amount based for that year, and they need to cut back to save costs. This happens to all governments, agencies, and organzations- both great and small.

The issue/question here would be- would Section 2 still be given its yearly allottment of the government's budget? Would the Government still supportive of the program. All fingers seems to point to a yes... but at what price? A successful mission would be a major asset for a funding increase. And this mission better be successful...

While I still believe the Social Welfare Agency - both it's public and private faces - are directly administered by the Prime Minister, we know from Chapter 2 that there are members of the Italian government who not only know about the cyborgs of Special Operations Section 2, but also support them.

What I personally find really chilling is that in Chapter 2 we learn a Senator called in a hit on a member of the Chamber of Deputies so members of the Italian Parliament are using the cyborgs as proxy soldiers against each other. Guh?

Like the US Congress, the Italian Parliment must be broken up into committees but where members are invited in to join. This can create a Cyborg Program friendly group based under some name like Home Anti-terrorist Committee, and subjects within Parliment can be targetted.

Talk about your crazy conspiracies!

I would be more inclined to think that it is individuals who know about the program either being elected to Parliament or being let in on it because of what they can do to benefit the SWA.

Considering how unstable Italian politics are, I would be surprised if the SWA's "private side" actually "briefed" Parliament on their activities, even in closed session. It's just too risky.

Random question. Is the real Italy anywhere as unstable as depicted in GSG...?

Italy on average has changed their government every year since the end of World War II, so politically, it's a basket-case IMO.

Yes, it's surreal. It's been like that ever since Garibaldi. Even before they brought in the republic after the war ( NO ), Prime Ministers would be out on their ear in months. At 6-7 years Silvio Berlusconi has lasted longer than any of them, and even he's lost and regained his position twice before now!

Gunslinger Girl also borrows some of its inspiration from the "Years of Lead" in the 1970s and 1980s, when communist treason and political violence in general was a big threat. God Almighty, even putting aside politics the disorder can be bewildering -- a thousand murders occured in just two years as part of the Second Mafia War! Maybe that's exceptional, but I still can't believe assurances that violent crime is statistically low in Italy for a heartbeat. How much goes unreported, I wonder...

2000? NYC had bloodier years than that! on a good low year, we average 3 murders a day, bringing the count to just over 1000!

I've heard talk that Yu based his PRF on the IRA.

I once posed the question whether or not the PRF really exists, but I've forgotten what the answer was...
