Computers/Cyborgs

Post by TTIO on Thu 19 Feb 2009 - 12:30

Had an entirely random thought. What OSs do you think each of the cyborgs use (if they do)?

Tbh, I suspect most of the canon ones use Windows, though Claes/Triela might have tried branching out a bit...

As for the OCs... Well that's gonna be a bit more complicated to work out Wink

Kara used a Mac prior to her being converted and she continues to use one now, as does Michele.

Kara has a 17" PowerBook G4, though my OC timeline is now in April 2006 so she will likely get a 17" MacBook Pro soon enough.

Michele has a Power Mac G5 with a 30" ACD though he, too, will go to a Mac Pro once they ship in August 2006.

the only OC I have with any computer savvy is Orazio, and he doesn't have much. He runs a four year old HP laptop with Windows XP SP2 on it.

Bao couldn't tell ya what his operating system is called (it's Vista).

neither of my cyborgs know a keyboard and mouse from a keyboard and mouse.

They use whatever OS the Agency uses. I think the Agency would want them all to use one standard OS, so things don't get complicated and stuff.

One way to find out - grab the manga, go look at those panels where the Agency people are on their computers, and discern what's on the screens.

Hillshire runs windows 95/98/ME on his laptop, or perhaps XP with a classic desktop theme. Not sure of anyone else's OS.

Best indicator would be that shot of Duvalier's comp, IMO. He's using an office machine, after all, and not his own.

the output's the same as a normal big multi-button mouse, so I'd imagine so. I can utilize a 3-button wheelmouse in MacOS.

It looks similar to a Logitech Trackman and those have Mac drivers.

an interesting point, and it's true the windows flag is conspicuously missing... but check a hardcopy of volume four (page 39). 'START' is clearly visible on the button, and there's a quicklaunch next to it with internet explorer, view desktop, and MShelp shortcuts in it.

I'm suspicious here. Most companies use Windows regardless (including all British councils Sad ) but the two pictures look suspiciously like Linux. Hilshire's, that's clearly GNOME he's running there. I'm sorry, but Windows taskbars look nothing like that. Here's a somewhat old version (I think that's Ubuntu 7.10) but you can see that the taskbar still looks a lot closer that a Windows one.

As for this one...
Spoiler:

I can't be certain, but that looks to me like some of the XFCE skins (or Fluxbox, I don't know which one provides the actual skins). I can't find any screenshots of that one online, so I'll take one off of my Wolvix install and upload it sometime today...

Now I wasn't expecting this at all. I would have thought that the agency, as a general rule, ran Windows. I mean, pretty much everyone does *shrugs*

now, I can't offer anything on Duvalier's comp, but I'm pretty damn sure Hillshire's running the same skin as me. I don't see any quicklaunch shortcuts on that GNOME screenshot, the 'start button' is tiny and has a symbol with no letters, and the edges of the taskbar items are more rounded. here's a little comparison:

my desktop:

here's an exploded view, if you're curious.

Hillshire's desktop:

it may look nothing like the way most people run windows nowadays, but its very familiar to those of us who went through high school running Windows 95. So much so that I can't operate using the new style they created with XP.
Honestly, I'm still more comfortable in DOS than in a GUI.

the handler might use windows for their office work. but cyborg should be at least at server level, and windows prove to be not too good here.
my guess is customize linux. with linux, they can re-program the OS anytime without care about the copyright.

besides, linux prove to be more stable than windows. but angelica might use windows server 200. that's why she's the most unstable one. lol.

i don't hate windows, since i'm using windows. but for server.......

Cancel that, I had another look at some of them and they're similar but not too similar. Enlightenment perhaps? Else something I've not yet seen... The closest skin I managed to find in the XFCE defaults.

I expect that the medical team are running some commercial Unix variant using special "vertical-market" medical app. Probably IBM AIX or HP-UX.

In my work, I and my peers have an IBM Unix Workstation running CATIA and other aerospace-market applications under IBM AIX and a second workstation running Windows (in my case, it's a Mac Pro with OS X and Windows via virtual machine and Boot Camp).

I remarked to Dennis that easily half the code I was writing in Multics was error recovery code. He said, "We left all that stuff out. If there's an error, we have this routine called panic, and when it is called, the machine crashes, and you holler down the hall, 'Hey, reboot it.'"

That is also epic
