Let the Right One In

Post by Danjo3 on Fri 13 Mar 2009 - 11:21

I watched an excellent movie yesterday called Let the Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in 2008) It’s a Swedish (subtitled) romance/horror film about a bullied boy who is befriended by a young vampire girl. Before you ask, this is not fluff like Twilight - It’s R rated, bloody and violent. I’m no big fan of vampire movies, but this one was fantastic.

Has anyone else seen this? Has anyone else even heard of it?

I've watched it, and can vouch for Danjo's opinion of its excellence. Watch it as soon as you can, folks.

Danjo already said in his initial post that it's subtitled.

Why don't you just go buy the DVD? It's already out.

sounds better than any new vamp story in recent memory, at least.

as for Twilight, I pretty much agree with this guy.
Spoiler:

In the end Eddy of course saves her because Meyer is a hack who doesn't understand anything other than straight forward storytelling. Since there are like 14 or 15 books in this series already, you just know that neither Bella nor Count Faggot die, so there you go. You know I didn't ruin anything for you. Honestly, I'd have given this thing 12 out of 4 Stars had Eddy torn out Bella's throat after saving her from the "ugly" vamp, but alas that did not happen. Hack.

What'd I think of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight? I had originally planned to read the whole series before the movie came out, but in the end I could barely force myself to even finish the first book.
...
Unless you like reading first person accounts of hyper teenage girl angst, stay the fuck away from Twilight. I find I have to give it Two Thumbs Down.

Now that's my kind of vampire story. After watching the trailers ([sv][en]), I can't wait to see it. I only had to read a basic plot summary of Twilight to know it's garbage.

I hate this whole "new vampire" wave. No one understands shit about a vampire unless you have stories from your Nana about a Vampire in her mothers old town. THAT'S a vampire story!

I am into horror stories (not movies though) and I still have to say, nothing has yet to beat Dracula in my mind... But I did wanna see the movie but no one was willing to go into the village to see it with me.

The DVD that was loaned to me did have an English dubbed version, but I would steer clear of it. Dubs are fine for animes, but never fail to screw up a movie. I recommend the subtitles.

You won’t be disappointed. Eli (Lina Leandersson) is every bit as ruthless and bloodthirsty as Claudia (Interview with the Vampire) but at the same time is very gentle and caring when it comes to Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant).

Personally, I love a well-made vampire story (was even into the Masquerade for awhile, so I've got no small amount of background knowledge). This one looks good... like it's got the necessary elements. I'll be interested to see just how much the this girl's Beast controls her, whether she bothers to struggle against it at all (doesn't look like she does much). But one must wonder, is that boy simply her plaything, to be tossed aside when she grows tired of him... or is she attempting to recapture some of the emotion and attachment she had in life?

Gentle and caring from a vampire is all well and good... but how long can it last?

Now that sounds like something interesting and original. with any luck, either Blockbuster or Hollywood might have it in their respective foreign sections. The best thing about the foreign sections is that hardly anybody visits them so the DVD's are rarely scratched. Smile

This could have easily walked away with best foreign film, but thanks to the Academy’s messed up eligibility rules, it never got a chance.

I’ve also heard rumors that there is an American remake in the works. Shit, Hollywood will do to this film what Eli does to her victims.

I wish - I checked out The Seven Samurai from my library and half way through it stopped playing 'cause of straches on the disc. *sigh* I need to finish that movie. The Magnificent Seven is probably the best remake of a foreign film ever though, and I've watched that a couple times.

Ya know, it would be mighty cool to see Eli as an Agency girl. You wouldn’t have to physically alter her at all; she’s pretty much good to go. I’d personally condition the absolute hell out of her, just to be on the safe side, but other then that…

And limited life span? Forget about it. You could get a hundred years out of her easy. I think she would be pretty happy with that job. I mean, every time she went out on a mission, it would be like going out to dinner.

Not a bad idea. One of us could write a crossover fic featuring that concept, or one in which the Agency is tasked with solving some odd murders around Italy, where the victims were drained of blood and two young children were spotted in the vicinity. I'd do something like the latter, but don't really have time.

I’ve got a question for you Nacht -
Spoiler:

You seem to be pretty knowledgeable on the subject of vampires, so I curious as to know what your take on Håkan is. I mean, he eats human food so he’s not a vampire. Eli says she’s been 12 a very long time, so he’s more then likely not her dad, and I find it hard to believe he became a serial killer because he likes her company (she’s not a very likeable person, except when it comes to Oskar). I’m thinking there’s some kind of Renfield thing going on. What do you think?

I expect Oskar is now filling that role for her.

Spoiler:
Hakan's no vampire. Whatever factor motivated him to hunt for Eli, I suspect was pedophiliac in nature - he lusted for her, IMO. As for why Eli stuck with him, I feel that lonely little girl may have thought it gratifying that someone would want to be with her, depraved though he was. As soon as Oskar came into the picture, however, she realized that she had found someone better, and no longer really cared if Hakan lived or died (note how she could have saved him from his imprisonment in the hospital, but let him perish instead.

I didn't sense anything like pedophilia with Håkan. He knew he was trapped so he tried to kill himself with the acid, but failed. I think she killed him because he was no longer of any use to her, he was a risk to her and to end his pain.

Spoiler:

I really wasn’t getting any pedo vibes either. It really seemed like he was doing it because he had to, not that he wanted to. The scene where she yells at him for forgetting the blood made me feel that he was somehow under her power. I also got the feeling that his death was more a mercy killing then anything else.

I disagree that she felt Oskar was a better choice. Two kids on their own are too conspicuous, and she knows it. She needs to have an adult to provide for her (place to live, clothing, ect.) and give her a cover (father/daughter, mother/daughter). More then likely, finding a new adult minion will be her top priority.

Spoiler:
I believe most vampire stories and mythologies note that a vampire can sire another by biting and draining just some of the blood from a human, so whatever causes vampirism should be transmitted via blood or saliva. As such, it might also be able to be transmitted by other body fluids.

Some legends go down that path. Others say that an EXCHANGE of blood has to happen between vampire and victim.

Danjo3 wrote:I watched an excellent movie yesterday called Let the Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in 2008) It’s a Swedish (subtitled) romance/horror film about a bullied boy who is befriended by a young vampire girl. Before you ask, this is not fluff like Twilight - It’s R rated, bloody and violent. I’m no big fan of vampire movies, but this one was fantastic.

Has anyone else seen this? Has anyone else even heard of it?
I thought the movie was crap, my dad rented it and everyone was saying how it's the best vampire movie ever...it was boring, slow, and made little sense. You even got the description wrong, my dad looked up the story because he was confused and apparently the vampire *spoilers*
Spoiler:
is really a boy who had it's penis removed...the "vagina" scene was supposed to be showing the scar of that
they did very little to explain anything...the only good part about the movie was the final scene IMO., wasnt really worth all that time though.

Can I ask you where your old man looked the story up?

Well, you’re certainly entitled to your own opinion. And I’ll tell you this, even if you are correct about Eli, it still wouldn’t change my opinion - I would still give it a 3-1/2 out of 4 stars. Excellent movie!

i assure you it's true lol, but I'm also sure the orignal novel is al ot better than the movie. To me it seems like the movie just wasnt able to fit enough details about anything in, happens all the time though....I'd probably give it a 2.5 or 3 out of 5, the horrible dubbing job doesnt help it much either, but that's not the films fault

Ah, I see.

Bad dubs can ruin a good foreign film. The dub of Akira Kurosawa's Ran is a prime example of this. But nothing compares to the horrible dubbing done in most hentai anime. Some of them in fact have a pretty good story to them with Milk Money, Scrapped Princess, and Spaceship Auga Reuter(sp?) being personal favorites. Just whatever you do, DON'T WATCH THE DUB!!

The movie wasn't at any of my local rental stores so I bought a copy off of eBay. Should be here in a few days.

Ah well. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. And...

Spoiler:
That bit with Eli is actually meant to be ambiguous - the viewer's supposed to make up their mind on that one.

Of course the dubbing doesn’t help. Has dubbing ever helped a movie? No, it hasn’t. As I said in an earlier post, stick to the subtitled version.

That sounds a lot closer to the truth.
