Timeline question

Post by maverick375 on Sun 22 Mar 2009 - 18:59

First: Has anyone sat down and worked up a time-line for the manga? Without a thorough analysis, I get a feeling most of it takes place over two years with Christmas as the only real defining points.

Second: When would you guys feel the Ministry of the Interior bombing takes place? I get a feel for October, but since I'm not familiar with the seasonality of Italy, it could be September or November for all I know.

There's a little flexibility in exactly what calendar dates the action in GSG occurs across - we discussed this recently on an O.C. thread (the relevant conversation begins in post no. 10). It'll suffice to say that "modern day" or "mid-2000s" is an accurate frame of reference. In terms of narrative time, from the characters' own dialogue we can be fairly specific in that a little over a year passes in between Vol. 1 and Vol. 10, from December to December.

I was one of the first who made an attempt at plotting out a timeline. My scenario sees Section Two come into being with Angie's induction in 2000, followed by Triela's in 2001 and (in the following order) Bea's, Rico's, Henrietta's, Claes' and Elsa's in 2002. The Villa Gatti mission I put down as one of Rico's earliest, taking place not long after her arrival in 2002. Elsa's death I pinned as taking place in late 2003.

Using the model of cars, the seasons, and the presence of scaffolding on the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, I have created the following timeline:

Volume 01 December 2004 (C4 / C5 take place between XMAS and NYE)
Volume 02 Winter 2005
Volume 03 Winter 2005
Volume 04 Spring 2005
Volume 05 Spring 2005
Volume 06 Summer 2005
Volume 07 Summer 2005
Volume 08 Fall 2005
Volume 09 Winter 2005
Volume 10 December 2005 / New Years 2006

This is also the timeline I use for my OC fiction.

Volume 06 has to take place in 2005 as the work on the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore (shown in Chapter 28) was performed between January and July 2005 and it's still in scaffolding in the manga (which came down in July 2005).

So watching the fansub of the OAV, when Jean is at Sophia's grave he says: "Sophia. In those two years I killed 56 opposition members."

So I think this is yet more evidence that Rico and Henrietta joined two years ago.

So I think this is yet more evidence that Rico and Henrietta joined two years ago.

Now this poses a problem. If Jean was there for 2 years, how long does it take for a girl to become a full fledged cyborg? Between Canon and Fanfict, this can take from days, weeks, months, up to a year.

In my Fanficts- its anything around 3 weeks (for the shortest: Rachel) to 3 months (the longest for Francesca's original construct by Dr. Frankenstein). This includes training to get them to function again (walking, running, moving around), and 1/2 of their combet training. Francesca had a long healing period but a short training period.

As for Jean keeping track of his kill count... That is a sign of a sick individual. One who is at war with the moral values of his mind and 'The Opposition Members.'

Henrietta is programmed to do something simillar, in keeping up with the girls. Jean has no one to show off his Kills.

I believe Henrietta keeps track of her kills because she thinks it impresses Jose if she has a high body count. She also wants to be a "good" cyborg and a "good" cyborg kills members of Padania.

One more reason why I find the whole thing so damn tragic.

Im not at all surprised he keeps track. Hes a professional its his job. And anyway, killing someone is no small matter. If you were to walk up to Jean and ask him how many people hes killed and he said, Hell I dont know. I dont keep track. that would be messed up.

I can think of far worse things that he could say. How about " I don't know. I lost count Guh? ." or "I don't know. I don't count the number of insects I crush Guh? "

Anyway, the fact that he's counting just emphasizes how emotionally detached he is. This kind of person is quite scary because he is so caught up in the killing that he views other humans as 'tools' and 'bad guys'; much like how people behave in computer games, only this isn't a game, you don't revive nearby after you die and the 'bad guys' are actually humans and not AI-controlled sprites.

Since Sophia's death, Jean lives only to kill Padania.

If the government actually ever "won" the war and Padania disarmed and gave up, I'd bet serious money Jean would take his own life over Sophia's grave because his "function" would be complete and he'd have nothing else to live for.

Of course, as time goes by and he gets older, all of the killing and violence might start to wear him down, much the way it did the Tibetan Terrier. He may one day become a dog that cant run anymore.

Plus the numbers look great on a resume.

Glocks are not the shit. Glocks can fail the same as any other gun. I've seen it personally, and have even heard first-hand accounts of something as basic as a slide-retaining pin snapping, the slide flying off. Get over the obsession and buy what fits your hand, your wallet, and ability.

What kind of job is he applying for? I'd go nuts if he's using this as a stepping stone to employment in the Padania or Mafia.

Interviewer: Previous job exprience?
Jean: I used to work with an organization that kills Padania. You'd better give me that job or else I'll put you on my hitlist too.

Well, he did prove to them what he can do and since they lost so many good people like Pinocchio to the SWA, what the hey. If you can't kill 'em, buy 'em . If I were Jean that would be my retirement job
