So does this make me a loser?

Post by Cherubino on Thu 2 Apr 2009 - 22:31

So here's the deal with prom.

Instead of going to the prom on June 12th, my friends and I realized that being dateless and mostly friendless except for each other, we were going to not go to prom. On top of that, prom is on a boat and one of my friends gets really sea sick. We also had no planning skills because no one made decisions.

So instead of doing prom, we are gonna pick a date where we will go out on our own to a fancy place. Then we will go to the korean Karaoke place.

And now my friend and I (AND TRIELA) can all go to anime next for the full three days and I will have my fun with my friends without the pressure... But I can't stop thinking... Doesn't this make me a loser for not going to prom? No Good

Yeah but... I dunno... People expected me to go... And I bought the dress... But I dunno. I feel like I will miss out... But maybe I won't. I dunno. I always hoped I would go to prom and have a great time but... Oh well. I'll be with my friends and then me and my friend Joyce will be alone. *sigh* I hate women.

it all depends upon your personal definition of 'loser'.
personally, I say no... but I was too busy with work to go to a damn prom. the whole affair just seemed childish to me, back then... and it pretty much still does.

I dunno. I don't fell so excited for Anime next for some reason. I guess they Hype hasn't hit me yet. I still need the specifics though... And if I only had a Cloud/Zack Cosplaying friend to wrap my arm around. *sigh* lol

And I just had this prefabricated idea of what I wanted prom to be... I guess I was hoping for to much. I guess I was being childish.

And nice LoC. I wish I were working on prom night. I like working! Laughing

You'd be a loser in their eyes. But what's important- what you think of yourself or what they think of you? Also, you spent time and money on a dress and planning for this event-you go, dateless or not. This is your final "Horrah!" and "SCREW YOU" to certain people before you graduate. You only get this 1 oppertunity once. Unless you go to Brooklyn Tech, then you have 2 - 4 proms... my year has had 2, and I went to both. And I go to every yearly reunion I can (missing out on the first 5 for obvious reasons). To those who dare call me a looser, I give a 11EEE steel toed mc boot to the groin- but that's me. Image is everything but self image is more.

sadly proms are becoming fashionable here as well, seems like a major expense for no good reason and its worse here as full time education ends at 16 in the UK ! (though they have raised it to 17 in 5 years time and 18 in 10) just seems like a bad idea usually leading to shotgun weddings and debts !

No Rubi, it does not make you a loser. In fact, it makes you a winner if you find the after-party first and get your drink on while everybody else has to 'catch-up'.

Best line I ever heard regarding proms.

"I never made it to prom, I only made to the parking lot."

That's a good thing. Gets rid of all the sucky people I never want to see again, and leaves all the people who actually care about school and want to do well.

I personally despise prom. My best friend who I had a crush on, got asked out by some guy (funny thing is when I was gonna call her to ask her out to prom, she was on the phone with him). I lost my Nissan 240SX to a drunk senior drinking his ass off from Wildwood prom weekend. Oh how I love New Jersey. Apparently prom weekend is just going down to Wildwood and getting wasted (I'm from New Jersey so yeah). One of my friends cheered me up by crashing one of those parties by firing bottle rockets at their beach houses.

So I hate both drunk drivers and prom.

Point being, no don't feel like a loser going for not going to prom. If anyone says otherwise they are just superficial fools. I'll be at Animenext so maybe we can meet if you like, however cosplay is gonna be an issue this year.

Oh, ok meeting up is fine then. If you can't cosplay, though I will be a sad little girl, I'll settle for dancing with you.

I dunno. Everything is so expensive. Something tells me I will regret not going. And I told all my friends I was going... But it's not like they offered me to ride in their limo.

I just am still upset about this. I guess it's to be expected. Nothing this year turned out like it should and I am so fucking fed up with it. I am sick of everything just blowing up in my face.

*coughcough*

Don't listen to the rest of them. They've passed their High School years...except Triela, I think.

Talk to me instead...cuz I'll be having one soon after the May exams.

Anyway, Prom IS expensive and it is one overrated thing. But there is one thing that you can't find in anywhere else but Prom.

Final memories.

I don't know how prom works over there, but here prom is only available for year 12. That means this is my first and last prom. Sure, it doesn't make you a loser if you missed it but wouldn't you feel bad about it? It is the last part of high school. The final before the goodbyes.

Prom is the last time you get to spend your time with your entire year level. You don't HAVE to get a date to prom. What's the big deal anyway? I know some people who would be coming with their friends and beside, I can expect once in there anyone would start grabbing anyone when the dance is up.

My say is, I say you go to prom. It will be the last time you'll be spending your time with your high school friends and hey, you are NOT gonna' get the same kind of people once you get to uni/college.

Also, prom actually pushes you to be thankful to have been in part of that graduating year level--your year level. Whether they're good or bad, once you're in there you see how thankful you can be to be part of that year. That's why, as part of a last memory, I say go to prom.

...you could always invite Triela anyway. Who knows? Your prom date could be inside the building already.

excessive sentimentality towards high school will only keep you livin' in the past once it's gone. Prom could be a good thing if there are a whole lot of friends going who you think you're going to stay in contact with... but other than that, it's just one more unnecessary ritual (unless, of course, you're just there to get laid).

Hmmm... Putting it like that, there is no such thing here in Holland. we got sort of a graduation party here called "Gala" but no alcoholic's there. The whole Prom happening as I would see it on American Made Television programs is not something that happens around here in Holland.

And even if it was happening here, I was very anti-social back then. I'd likely end up skipping prom.

I went to my prom (both of them, since my damn school was so big, it needed 2 of them!) just to have certain ppl question, "Why The Fuck Is He Here?!!"
Spoiler:
They both ended in gun/knife fights; neither one I started. But I managed to live up to my reputation of Damsel Saving and got some nice nookie for it Very Happy

Now I go to HS Reunions for the same reasons... April 25 - 28 will be the next one coming Evil
Spoiler:
Though I go every year, the last big one for my class was the 25th anni.; where I brought in my wife's twin, and was told by a couple of rent a cops to leave. That was 3 years ago, and those bastages have been collecting disability since. Like I told them, no one has the right to tell me that I do not belong there, especially when I paid the price of the admissions fees and alumi dues.

Kinda' stupid but...what's nookie?

It's an excuse for high school seniors to get drunk and get laid.

excessive sentimentality towards high school will only keep you livin'
in the past once it's gone. Prom could be a good thing if there are a
whole lot of friends going who you think you're going to stay in
contact with... but other than that, it's just one more unnecessary
ritual (unless, of course, you're just there to get laid).

Feh, westerners. Always lead everything to sex. Laughing
Maybe its just how I grew up in a pretty much controlled background.

Prom is what I say the last of high school memories, last time you'll be spending your time with your high school friends. Sure, maybe some will see one another as fuck-buddies instead, but I'll be damned...

The moment you step in, you can see the variety of characters that you missed during the busy years of high school years. You can see their joy of completing a chapter in their life, tears for having to part, close ties, friendship...

...and maybe some perverted faces/illicit actions. Their own loss for ruining their last high school moment. Which, in my opinion having to have been born in 91 and living in a pretty much media-influenced society is utterly stupid.

Prom is more of a reflection than a gathering. It depends how your eyes perceive it, but at that moment once you see all the faces, I think you'll understand how those guys around you are your comrades who have traveled with you arm in arm and pull each other through the tough times in High School. I mean, you can't survive alone in high school.

And I'll bet on this, no matter how many here would say 'I survived ALONE', I'll say 'Impossible'. The ones I know who did committed suicide last year in a rentan-suicide. And that is with their friends.

Remember: After prom (year 12 prom in my case. If there others, there's always the year 12 one), all of your year level will split to wherever and might not see each other for a long time...which get me to the topic where I should return to my studies. Razz

I applied to MelU (Melbourne University) with Arisa-san. She was accepted already, but I'm still pending. My IB total currently is 29 and I need 31 minimum to get in. Hopefully, I pray, I made it.

...that last one is OOT.

Yes. I've lived in and studied Japan long enough to know it's not a Puritanical society.

I sure hope we're not setting a bad precedent for our youngest members with all this frank talk of sex. sweat

I can only speak for one high school in the northwestern US during the late 1990s, but... there was no camaraderie like that you speak of, outside the tiny minority of students who were into sports (who were generally regarded as idiots by the rest of us... usually with good reason). High school was just a necessary step toward becoming independent of those older than you, when I went through. Most treated it like a hated part-time job... and they couldn't wait to move on to bigger and better things. Melodramatic suicides among students in my high school years were much less common than senseless murders over puppy love or different colored bandannas.

So yeah, different culture. You can't describe high school in one country and assume any part of it applies to high school in another. If you want an extreme example, look into the education systems of middle eastern countries.

What LoC978 said.

I went to a small private Catholic high school so we were all pretty tight as a student body, both within and across grades. And the entire student body likely numbered less then just one grade at a large public high school.

No doubt this helps explain why our proms and other social events (dances, assemblies, etc.) were all really fun (and being Catholic had nothing to do with it - we tended to be very secular).

Yeah Panzie. LoC is actually true here. I wish I were in your school. Things seem so much nicer there.

The problem I have Panzie, is that I am a transfer student and I've only been in my current school for 2 years. I don't talk to anyone in my old school anymore (bad blood there) and I don't feel really welcome in my school anymore. The IB kids were always separated from other kids for the last 4 years and didn't accept me as an outsider. So I became friends with the Asian girls. They're nice I guess but I'm only really close with two of them. And I hate that they speak Canto around me when I know they are talking about me. My BFF is korean. I can tell when people are speaking about me. It's natural now. I just don't think I'll have a good time at prom. I'm still torn. And if I don't have a date I will be the only one without. And all their dates will speak Canto about me too... I dunno. I wanna go and I don't... I can't seem to make up my mind...

I'm still torn. And if I don't have a date I will be the only one without.

Seriously, what's the big idea of coming to prom with a date anyway? Sure, there's the ball dance but as far as I know you can grab or ask anyone who's not dancing then bam! You got yourself a date :p

...of course, I shouldn't be saying that since I'm coming with one...

but anyway, having or have no date doesn't prevent you to actually just experience prom itself. You only have prom 1nce you know. The rest will be a more 'formal' dance party with oldies music and some invitation card or a wedding with people you hardly know about. This time you get to spend the night with someone you knew.

The IB kids were always separated from other kids for the last 4 years and didn't accept me as an outsider
...so that means you can interact with them? Well, you could always ask one to dance :p

They're nice I guess but I'm only really close with two of them. And I

me
Oh, c'mon...how do you know they're talking about you? I mean, here we do have expats from Taiwan and they do speak cantonese when they're together or when they're with their friends. I mean, its not healthy to put suspicion on your friends, deshou?

And besides, during the ball, I think I believe someone would ask you for a dance. Well, who knows? I'll say, just come to prom. Invite Triela if you feel like you need extra company.

From my understanding, the whole focus of the American prom is the date - who's with who, who you came with, who's with a popular person and who's not, etc. If you don't have a date you have much less of a reason to go, and if you don't have many friends to go with there's not really much of a point in going.

Yup. You can stand against a wall listening to music at home for a lot less money and effort.

Re: So does this make me a loser?

Post by Cherubino on Thu 9 Apr 2009 - 20:15

Panzie, it's not that I know for a fact they are talking about me but I can tell. Once we were in store and I needed new pants and I tried some clothes on. I came out of the dressing room with different pants (too baggy) and they started speaking in canto and giggling. I said to them, "Why do you always have to be so hurtful?" And they stopped and asked what I meant. I told them I spoke Canto and thats why I became their friends but I never spoke Canto because I knew they spoke Canto to gossip and I never wanted to gossip with them. They didn't believe me and then told me to tell them what they said. I said, "I don't have the heart to say those nasty words about myself out loud." They looked down ashamed. One girl left. One girl tried being reasonable with me. The next day in school I told them I lied but I knew they were talking about me. Needless to say, the don't speak much Canto around me.

And prom isn't like that. It IS about who your with and that stuff. Finding someone is almost impossible. Thank you for the encouragement though. You're a real sweetie.

Different culture I guess... *sigh*

Seriously, what's the idea of 'date proms' anyway? They just brand people losers or something just because they don't have one when originally it was intended for a moment of reflection and reminiscence.

Its just how the students makes it 'mandatory' to have a date in prom that eventually latches itself into the entire prom culture thing. Geez...

This is just a general ramble on the entire prom-thing.

I mean, seriously, if the meaning of going to prom is to just show off your GF/BF, then what's the point? Does it 'make it an official couple' or something? No. What about your friends? Seriously, I don't know about how Western cultures work, but if the only point on going to prom is just for some stupid GF/BF fashion show, then its nothing more than an ego-build up when originally its supposed to be the last time you'll be spending your time and enjoy yourself with the rest of your year level.

Well, guess what's over is still a mystery to me. Oh well, if that's how things work over there maybe skipping it won't be such a bad idea but...

I sitll of all cases encourage you to just go for it. Just so you could have a memory of your last year in high school Very Happy

Glad we could help you understand one of the most seriously fucked-up things about our culture. You just outlined some of the general reasons why people with analytical minds tend to avoid their prom over here... it sorta hearkens back to some Harvey Danger lyrics...

The focus of the prom is a final good-bye party of friends and classmates, as you gradaute from high school to enter college or the work force. It is a farewell to child/teen hood: No more Homework, No more Books! No More Teacher's Dirty Looks!

But life goes on and as many think and do, that friendships do not really end after high school, why need a prom? It is a goodbye to a place up until then you just spent 1/4 of your life in... thats what a prom is for... and if certain idiots give you hell from that place- it is when and where you put them in theirs.

That is how I see it.

But again, being a loser about not going? Dont even go there. Being a loser is when you spend 6 years in high school, getting high and not ever graduating from school. You now then have amounted to nothing more than a dreg of society, and a scab on the face of humanity...

Being a loser in prom is for those who don't see the true purpose of it and is incapable of valuing one of life's lessons: friendship.

Coming there with a date doesn't mean he/she is not a loser. Oh, believe me, I think they're actually one of the dumb-nuts if they decide to just go there, get drunk, and get laid.

...by the way, there won't be any alcohol in my prom...good thing, I guess...?

Well, different culture I guess. Sorry if I offended you Cheru-san.

But from listening to how it is over there, despite having the thought of how you should just 'go' to the prom just to make your presence, now if its more of a fashion show and a showing off of GF/BF thing, then I say I can't agree less with the rest of those who said 'don't go'.

Well, as I said, if its just for the said above, its a waste of time.

The theme of the prom was that way here too.

The only time I went to prom was with a couple lesbian friends in my sophomore year. They kept bugging me for two weeks straight to go with them as their 'muscle', and damn it all for female persistence.

Truth be told we went for WTF value. They wore evening dresses with converse hightops and little bell-balls(I forget their official name at the moment) in the shoelaces. I did the same with my tux(guys HAD to wear a tux, stupid dress code), and fashioned cufflinks out of said bells.

Then they took me to this senior's only afterparty(did I mention they were senior's), and I fell in love with it. I drank too much

He drank too much SHUT UP KEANU REEVES

, I got too high, I stayed too long; but after all that's why they call it a party.

Even though many LOLZ were had, after all was said and done it left a bitter taste in my mouth. To this day, I can't understand how expressing individuality could ellicit behavior from what is slightly off center from the contemporary. So for the following two years I skipped the prom and went to the afterparty.

And that is what I reccomend you do Rubi. Put that sexy dress over your sexy body, get yourself looking like the Russian Queen you KNOW you are and drink too much, get too high, and stay too long.

Rubi's royal party brigade= dancin\\' cheers dancin\\' dancin\\' Bong hit dancin\\' dancin\\' dancin\\' drinkin' dancin\\' Cheers! dancin\\' Good viking

Dude, it's a universal truth.

And thanks for the encouragement Boom Boom.

I admit, my mind has been made up now. I'm afraid it has nothing to do with what anyone has said to me here, thought I do appreciate the good or bad will you all presented.

I am not going to my prom after all. Nor the after party. I am unable to afford it. The last bit of my money went toward playing my registration for college. I am pissed though. I already bought a dress thinking that my friends would go, we would have things planned, and that my family wouldn't be skipping food shopping trips just to survive. We all get along in life somehow... I guess that I will make up for not going to prom by having a sucker marry me and have a nice party then. Hehehe. But honestly, I wouldn't put more than $500 down on my prom or a wedding anyway lol.

Thanks anyway guys... =/
