The quest to install a PC game...

Post by Cherubino on Mon 13 Apr 2009 - 21:44

But here's the problem. I have a Mac. And the CDs say they need windows 95 or higher or something like that.

How can I get them to install? Now, remember here people... I am NOT good with computers! I have a Mac because they are g-d like and can do everything nice and easy. Except, I need entertainment now... I just wanna install a game or five... T.T

(Also, does anyone know if newer games like Fall Out 3 are compatible with Mac's? The game I want to install is pretty old so I could understand if I can't get it to work...)

You have two options:

The first option is Boot Camp. This creates a separate area of your computer where you can install Windows. You can then select whether OS X or Windows comes up when you start your computer.

The second option is virtualization. This allows you to install and then run Windows as if it was just another OS X application. I use Parallels, but VMWare's Fusion is also popular.

For a game, Boot Camp is probably the best option. Visualization is getting better at support Windows video game technologies (DirectX), but some newer DirectX versions will not run under virtualization and performance is slower then via Boot Camp.

Yeah... separate partition boot is the way to go. Isn't that what they call a "Bad Apple"? A mac running windows.

Which game are you trying to run, Cheru? If it's DOS base, you might be able to find an emulator like DOSBox to run it, but i'm not sure if they make one for Mac.

First things first:
  1. What's the name of the game?
  2. Have you tried installing it in whatever they call the Windows emulation program?
  3. What version of Mac OS do you have?
  4. What's your CPU speed?
  5. How much memory do you have?

The first question is the most important one and the second I think may prove to be your solution.

As for Fallout 3, Wikipedia lists Windows, PS3, and Xbox 360 - no Mac.

They make DOSBox for Mac, but it won't help with a Win95 game.

relevant macrumors thread:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=592016

so yeah, a dual-booted system looks like the only way to go...

also, on Apple-manufactured hardware, you'd hafta have a pretty new/expensive system to run Fallout 3 well.

If you're willing to pay though, you could always get Crossover. I use Wine, personally, but apparently the Mac builds for that are really buggy. Linux ftw! head bang

But yeah, there are a lot of Wine-based Windows API layers out there, that'll run it as a Windows program. I'd personally say that that's the best way to go, if you don't want to dual boot/run a virtual machine.

bah. just dual boot on PC hardware. trying it the other way 'round (without a $10,000+ system, anyway) seems a little bit pointless...

OK guys. Thanks for the help! Some of it makes no sense to me but I will try my best to make sense of it.
First things first:
1. What's the name of the game?
2. Have you tried installing it in whatever they call the Windows emulation program?
3. What version of Mac OS do you have?
4. What's your CPU speed?
5. How much memory do you have?
1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
2. I didn't know there was a windows emulator.
3. It says I have OS X version 10.5. I'm not sure that'll help you though..
4. Not a clue.
5. My comp says is has 2 GB 1067 MHzDDR3. If you understand that then g-d bless ya!
I went into, "About this Mac", and this is what I got.
Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MB51.0073.B00
SMC Version: 1.32f6
I am not even going to ask how to Boot a computer. I have no Freaking clue...

*looks up the mac version*
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! FIFTY BUCKS?!

*ahem*
anyway... that's a middling-old game, developed for the most stable version of windows to date (early XP), so hopefully the windows version of it will run fine on any of the windows emulators others have mentioned in this thread.
Your computer shouldn't have any trouble running it, what with its 2GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM.

Mac Version of what? And where does one find said emulator? Do I just type in Windows emulator for Mac in Yahoo search or something?

Well the MacBook does have a powerfully lame integrated Intel GPU, but it might have enough juice to run it natively in Windows. I don't think emulation or virtualization is gonna cut it...

-virtualization: just another name for emulation, in this case. There's probably some sort of technical difference I'm not aware of, but in practice it should be the same thing, so...

are you sure? The KoTOR games aren't resource-intensive at all by today's standards (or even the standards of four years ago)...
