Which 1911?

Post by ElfenMagix on Wed 15 Apr 2009 - 9:39

Of all guns, the 1911 Automatic Colt Pistol is probably the most copied and the most varied of all the handguns out there.

With so many options out there, from .38 Super and 9mm to 10mm and even .50cal, which 1911, if you like them at all, would you prefer, and why?

Me? Sadly- its the defunct American Arms M1981/1984. Formerly an agency gun based on the 1911 with a wider frame and certain 1911 issues hammered out in the 1981/84, along with a wider magazine for double the ammo load (normal 1911 mags can be used with adaptor shims in place). Its the Rolls Royce of 1911s- if you can find one. American Arms (AA) was sued out of existance around 1986 by Anti-gun lobists, and Amercian Agencies bought out the remaining stock and AA was left to drown to death in litigation. Funny though... AA's M1981/84 was not ever recorded in use of crimes- but many of their other models were (including their older version 1911s). AA was one of those companies that copied other manufacturer's guns, and thus gained a bad reputation for lousy cheap guns. But when then they made their own guns, like the M1981/84, they make the best out there.

Now, if we exclude the AA 1981/84, for me it would have to be the Colts series in .45 ACP. They are the standard which others go for. Second place after that would have to be the S&W 1911 because their quality is just great. Though they have just recently started to make the 1911 and slap their name brand on it, they have been making 1911 parts and frames since WW1 for the Goverment and contract by Colt. Its about time that they did started to make their own 1911s...

Sounds like a precursor to the infamous Maadi-Griffin Arms vs. Barrett case.

My favorite 1911 is the one that the Marines use - the MEU (SOC) model.

During the 1980's, smaller gun manufacterers were targeted first, including a few that were in Brooklyn NYC (like Brooklyn Firearms Co.) were sued out of existance. The issue being that anti-gun lobbyists were given too much power in this city, and thus we suffer the high crimes for it. Thus made politicians pass laws where there would ne no more gun manufacturers within the city of NYC... Sad because they hired much of the machinists that were in NYC, machinists who also worked in other metal working jobs such as automotive parts manufcture.

Going back to my AA1981/1984- the closest variant of it is the Colt 1991. Closest, because it has all the same mods to the 1911, except for the wider frame and wider magazine. Everything else is the same. I believe that Colt may have been contracted to make AA1981/84 parts for the remaining AA's in Agency Armouries. Being able to do that, they must have ben able to take those improvements of the 1981/84 and put them into their 1991's.

well, they're all too damned knobbly for me, and the only one I've ever fired I disliked... but I suppose if I had to choose one, my biggest criteria would be double stack magazines, which are a rarity among 1911s. Seriously, what's the point of a full framed .45 that only carries 7+1?
that being said, this clone seems to have fairly smooth lines compared to a lot of 'em out there, and carries the standard 13+1 of modern full-framed .45s, so I guess it would be my choice.

I dunno, LoC - concealability, perhaps? Them 1911s are pretty slim thanks to the single stack.

the slide and grip are still too damned long for good concealability. The only answer I've heard that satisfied me even a little was that guys with smaller hands find the single stack versions easier to grip.

If you're crazy, LoC, here is Springfield Armoury's 9mm 1911 in 'mini' format!

I'd probably take a M1911 made from Wilson Combat. But all in all I'm not a real fan of the gun.

Believe or not, I've seen .22LR conversion kits for the 1911. It consists of a few parts changes, including the barrel. They claim its for target use only...

.22LR 1911s with a silencer are pretty darn quiet

I'm actually a hardcore otaku who likes maids more than having three meals in a day and I only read books related to maids. Also, I only visit maid cafes. Of course I also collect maid figurines, I play games which feature maids and it turns me on so much that I'll wear the maid uniforms and jump in joy.

I'm partial, of course, to my own m1911 (which is an army WWI era model), and .45 is a must if you are refering to the 1911.

Of course it's fun to compare with my WWI 9mm parabellum Luger.
