Behind the choices...

Post by Piero on Sun 24 May 2009 - 17:13

This topic is inspired by another thread in The Armory where people discussed the weapons choices they'd made for their characters. I considered posting discussion on this matter there, but it kind of moved on to other matters and when I thought about trying to get it back on topic... I realised OC weapons choices wasn't the original topic of the thread to begin with. Besides which, a discussion on OC weapons choices really fit better in this part of the forum.

So basically, why do you think your OC's weapons are good choices for the characters you gave them to?

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by Piero on Sun 24 May 2009 - 17:17

I'll take first stab at this. I've got a ton of characters to get through anyway. I'll be breaking them up, so I may as well get started early...

I suppose I should take a moment to briefly explain my criteria. Put simply... it's complicated. A combination of realism/practicality combined with what I like combined with a desire for variety and balance with other characters combined with what seemed to suit or even just 'feel right' for the character in question. Striking the proper balance can be difficult.

Anyway, first two fratellos up are the Diana/Piero fratello and the Alessia/Andrei fratello. Feel free to comment.

Fratello overview:

Diana’s handler is Piero, a former member of the Carabinieri’s elite GIS counter terrorism unit. Because of this Diana is well trained for CQB combat. She is also has a talent for sharp shooting that her handler has sought to develop. It's also notable that Piero is quite 'hands on' in his approach, having a tendency to work directly with his cyborg during combat.

Diana:

H&K G3-SG/1: Probably Diana’s most iconic weapon. Highly accurate, but also very
versatile due to the fact that it is essentially a modified battle rifle. During his GIS days, Diana’s handler favoured one of these weapons over the larger and heavier PSG-1 (another H&K rifle) when serving as a scout for sniper teams.
H&K HK53A3: Another roller locking H&K, this time a submachine gun sized variant of the HK33 assault rifle. It’s essentially a 5.56mm MP5. This is Diana’s handler’s favourite CQB weapon, due largely to its firepower. The utility of Diana’s HK53 is enhanced via the addition of a Surefire 628 forearm with integrated tactical light.
Beretta Model 92FS: Standard issue Italian service pistol. Kind of large, but quite capable, combining good reliability and accuracy with a large ammunition capacity (especially when equipped with the 18 round enhanced capacity magazines.
SITES Resolver M9: A very small, very slender 9mm pistol produced in small number by the now defunct Italian SITES corporation. Diana carries one of these as a backup gun. She often carries it small of the back, where its extremely slim profile is a plus. (Please note that information published by Jane's indicates a nine round ammunition capacity rather then the fifteen round capacity Security Arms does. I tend to go with the Jane's figure, especially since it included a set of dimensional data.)

Piero:

H&K HK53A3: As noted above, this weapon is essentially a 5.56mm MP5 and Piero’s favourite CQB weapon. As his example does not need to fit in a viola case, he has equipped it with a 1.1-4x Schmidt and Bender “Short Dot” multirole scope. This is a somewhat unusual feature for such a short barrelled weapon, however it should be noted that the HK53 is very accurate for its size and that Piero is an excellent marksman.
Manurhin MR-73: Piero probably acquired his taste for this weapon while on exchange with the French GIGN, who use it as their standard sidearm. These revolvers are known for their build quality and are considered one of the world’s most accurate service sidearms, which probably appealed to Piero due to his excellent marksmanship. They are also known for their durability and are quite powerful due to the .357 Magnum cartridge that they fire.
Beretta Model 92FS: Piero often carries one of these under his suit opposite his Manurhin. While he respects this weapon, it is mostly carried as a high capacity back up to the more accurate and powerful (but low on capacity) Manurhin.

Fratello overivew:

Alessia’s main strength is her versatility in combat. She might not be the best in many roles, but she knows how to fulfill a lot of roles, some of them rather specialised. Her handler is a former member of the Soviet/Russian Army who ended up joining the French Foreign Legion when the Russian Army became a mess during the 90s. Despite being capable of more covert work, she is perhaps most useful during assault missions and the like.

Alessia:

GIAT FAMAS G2: A distinctive looking bullpup used by the French Foreign Legion. Alessia uses this as her viola case gun. It is a versatile weapon, capable of CQB combat but also posessing a long barrel and even a bipod.
H&K USP-9 Compact: Essentially a slightly smaller and easier to conceal version of the pistol her handler uses.
FN Minime Para: Compact belt fed machine gun. Its combination of firepower and moderate size make it well suited to providing supporting fire to teammates during fast moving assault missions.
Armalite AR-10T: The AR-10 action is exceptionally accurate for that of an auto loading rifle, so much so that well tuned AR-10s can rival bolt action weapons for accuracy. Alessia’s AR-10T has a formidable combination of both accuracy and firepower, making it useful for a wide variety of roles.
Degtaryev "Kord": Russian built heavy machine gun which can be fired from a bipod. This massive weapon’s use in actual deployments is something of a rarity due to the difficulty of transporting it, but when the situation calls for truly massive firepower, this monster of a machine gun can provide it.
Milkor MGL-140: Another special purpose weapon, this six shot rotary type grenade launcher can be used with either lethal or non lethal munitions.

Andrei:

GIAT FAMAS G2: Standard weapon of the French Foreign Legion (which he used to serve with). Used occasionally.
H&K USP-9: Andrei does not view handguns as particularly potent weapons, though he has experience with the Russian Makarov and the French variant of the Beretta 92. He probably chose this weapon due in part to its good reputation and the fact that it is a bit easier and more comfortable to carry then the Beretta 92 due to smaller size and weight.

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by ElfenMagix on Sun 24 May 2009 - 17:46

The Why is always the problem question to answer. But...

Fernando, Kathy, Juanita, Leon- all Government Agents on one level or another, all trained on the 1911 (the ladies on the .38Super, Leon being in 'Nam has his old 1911 from the war, and Fernando grew up with the gun). As personal choices, Fernando found out about the American Arms version of the 1911 (M1981/M1984) and fell in love with it (wider frame, double the ammo, better safety system, etc). Even though the gun is no longer being made and parts for it scarce, he took it upon himself to get it. After killing Randal (a rogue agent who also had an AA M1984), Fernando now has 2 of them.

Rachel has the 1911, given to her by her godfather, so she would have a gun equal to his in looks, function and stopping power. But this is for personal use only. Rachel's 1911 is the S&W version in .45ACP.

Fernando choose the .32NAA as a mission weapon because of its small size and almost equal stopping power to the .45 even though its a smaller bullet on an oddball casing. With extended 10-round magazines, this proved more than enough fire power in a fight and still be tiny. Tiny enough that it fits inside Fernando's hand! As per the story, the guns are electronically locked by remote RFID watches where the gun has to be within 4 inches from the watch for it to fire. This would be a safety feature that would prevent the gun from being used if stolen, though there is a mechanical override if the batteries goes dead but the gun has to be taken apart to do the switch. Each gun comes with its own RFID watch from the factory and no two watches can be intermixed with guns. If the watch is lost, the gun has to be sent to the factory for a new watch to be programmed to the gun.

The other guns (M1 Garand, M16 w/M203 and M107), are basically sniping rifles with the M16 being more flexable in duty and performance than the other 2. Fernando learned on the M1 Garand from Leon, and has passed it down to Rachel. She prefers is to over the other two despite its flaw.

Francesca's gun is the same as Henrietta's SiG P239 Duo Tone in 9mm, given to her by the agency and not by Fernando. Like the .32NAA, its a tiny and cute gun. Fernando dislikes the 9mm round but deals with it accordingly. Francesca has not learned to use any rifles under Fernando, but might have under her previous handler- Felix. Current status on this is, she does not remember, but might if her old rifle (or a simillar unit) is thrown upon her lap. What the rifle is is remains unknown for now.

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by Piero on Sun 24 May 2009 - 18:58

Personally, I tend to find two tone P239s more flashy then cute myself. They've got pretty businesslike lines and they seem very much like no frills combat pistols in terms of how they work (thinking of things like control set up, internal mechanics, etc). They share ancestory with the P226, after all, and even look rather similar.

Anyway, here are my next two fratellos:

Fratello overview:

Sabina is a former street kid who ended up being chosen as the cyborg of Gabriele, a young, brilliant, and somewhat unusual handler who had served in the Guardia di Finanza as a member of the ATPI unit and later as an investigator. Her handler tends to take a more experimental approach to things and allowed Sabina to choose her own weapons rather than choosing them for her. Sabina is resourceful and intelligent, and while she is usable in heavy combat operations she is probably most useful in covert missions and fluid situations that require improvisation.

Sabina:

S&W Model 3953: Sabina chose this single stack 9mm due to a combination of small size (she tends to dress casually), ergonomics, and possibly ease of use. Despite being small, this double action only pistol is reasonably accurate, which means that Sabina does not need to replace it with another weapon for assault missions. This pistol may have originally been acquired for evaluation purposes, as it certainly isn't common issue in Italy or the SWA.
PM-98 Glauberyt: Uzi-like Polish submachine gun. Sabina had a Mini-Uzi in the past, but I was uncomfortable with that due to Beatrice having a Micro-Uzi. The PP-98 is similar in size to a Mini-Uzi but still distinct. While it is a bit heavier than some new polymer framed submachine guns, it is nevertheless a fairly modern and compact weapon with a decent amount of firepower. This weapon has a tactical light integrated into the forearm, and Sabina generally carries it in a messenger bag.
IWI Tavor CTAR-21: Carbine version of the Tavor assault rifle, used for certain assignments. I though Sabina might appreciate the handling characteristics of a bullpup rifle, and this was one such design that was reasonably competent and hadn’t been used by a canon cyborg or one of my other OCs yet.
SAKO TRG-22: A modern 7.62mm NATO bolt action that is considered to have world class accuracy. In the past I was going to have Sabina use a semi-auto, but I decided she while she is appreciative of firepower, she obviously doesn’t consider it
the only priority, so I gave the AR-10T back to Alessia and gave Sabina this. Hers might be the folding stock version of this rifle.

Gabriele:

Bernardelli P.One VB: An elegant looking but quite capable pistol, quite distinct from the Beretta 92 that is standard issue with most major Italian military and police forces. This is quite accurate weapon, which suits Gabriele well since he is a good marksman. While it has a decocker, its safety set up maintains the ability for cocked and locked carry. Gabriele’s example is likely equipped with wood grips (which make it a little bulkier but then with plastic grips but hey, Gabriele’s a big guy).
Beretta SCP-70/90: Folding stock equipped carbine variant of the standard Italian assault rifle. Gabriele has experience with AR-70/90 derivatives from his days with the Guardia di Finanza’s ATPI tactical unit.
Beretta Model 501: A distinctive looking sniper rifle, somewhat unusual for its stock design. A very nice looking weapon, but also a capable one. Only problem is that Jose actually uses one of these rifles a bit in GSG Season one…

Fratello overview:

Felisa’s handler is a former soldier turned intelligence agent. He has an interest in weaponry and as such has sought ought a number of quite capable weapons that are not standard issue for most Italian law enforcement and military units.

Felisa:

H&K UMP-9: A well regarded modern submachine gun that is quite light in weight. Felisa typically carries one of these guns in a messenger bag. Its basic design has quite a bit in common with that of the G36 rifles that the fratello also makes use of.
Beretta PX4 Storm: This pistol is similar to the Model 92 in terms of controls, but has more modern features like a polymer frame with adjustable grip backstraps. It is
smaller and lighter than the 92, making is easier to carry concealed, and it is also highly ergonomic.
H&K P7M8: An older HK design with a unique squeeze cocking mechanism. Small, safe, fast to deploy and very accurate, though kind of heavy. Used by Felisa and her handler as back up guns.
H&K G36K and C: These light, modern and well regarded carbines are used for assault missions. The G36’s modular configuration makes it possible to switch between different configurations. Felicia and Adriano seem to like to equip these weapons with a 3x scope/red dot dual set up, even in the short C configuration.
Benelli M3 Super 90: A shotgun that has a semi auto mode but also a pump action mode to allow cycling of light specialty loads. Generally used on assault missions.
H&K PSG-1A1: This is considered the flagship of H&K’s sniper rifles. Highly accurate
despite being a semi-auto. The A1 version uses a different scope then the original did.

Adriano:

G36C/K, Beretta PX4 Storm, H&K P7: see above.

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by maverick375 on Sun 24 May 2009 - 19:10

I've got it easy since I only have one fratello mapped out. My second is still in brainstorm stage adn I haven't decided on the weaps yet.

Anywho, Michael, former CIA (aren't all action-hero Americans?) is an infiltration specialist, breaking into places, setting bugs, getting intel, etc. He also has experience in planning larger raids, so his personal skills are heavy into stealth, but not assassination level stuff, except as someone pulling the shooter's strings.

His primary weapon is a Smith M&P40 with a supressor, for when the sneaking around goes bad. His assault weapon is an Alexander Arms AR-15 in .50 Beowulf, though he often uses smaller calibers when the 50 isn't necessary. I primarily chose this combo because I like it (having a 40 myself), and the Beo because it's likely the last gun you'll ever need against anything smaller than a tank. Be it light-armored vehicles or medium-hard cover, the Beo will chew through it.

Jamie is another story. Her primary role is in transition right now in my story's time-line. I've made her the third 2nd gen cyborg, and since the 2nd Gens' roll in the SWA teams is not yet really established, she is being prepped primarily to be a designated marksman, expected to replace Rico when she's burned out. Her weapon of choice is the M24A3 (Remington 700) chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum. She's a natural shot with both handgun and rifle, but even with that her marksmanship is limited to her level of practice. Her practical range is 600 yards for a head-shot, though with more practice she will eventually come up to the rifle's actual capability, likely out to a thousand yards lethality on a torso shot.

In the meantime she is an all purpose borg, taking part in assaults as needed. For this she has an H&K G36. Her guitar case is designed to be reasonably adjustable internally so she can change out between the G36 and the M24A3 when needed (before missions) and not have to worry about anything rattling around. If she expects to need both, the G36 gets hauled along in a soft case.

Her carry piece is a Walther PPS in 9x19 with the eight-round extended mags. This she will carry in a purse when necessary (dressing to kill), and inside the waistband when casual. She also has an M9 Beretta as back-up for assault work.

I chose her rifle because it's distinctly American, but the PPS is for it's size practicality and the G36 because it's effective and distinctly different from Michael's AR.

Glocks are not the shit. Glocks can fail the same as any other gun. I've seen it personally, and have even heard first-hand accounts of something as basic as a slide-retaining pin snapping, the slide flying off. Get over the obsession and buy what fits your hand, your wallet, and ability.

Sounds like good OCWiki Material there, Mav!
Although according to the OCWiki, the 3rd Generation Cyborgs are more highly specailized in mission specifications and function in their authors' stories. But one can be highly specialized in generalization Evil !!!

As I indicated in the other thread, I chose the XM8 because it is a "jack of all trades" weapon. Rather then require Kara to familiarize herself with a sharpshooting rife, a PDW, a carbine, an assault rifle and an automatic rifle, she can configure the XM8 to fulfill any and all of those roles. This means she uses one weapon all the time and can maximize her proficiency with it.

As for the P2000 SK, I wanted a sub-compact that fired something better then 9x19mm. The P2000 also allows .357SIG or .40 S&W and I chose the latter.

HK XM8

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by Piero on Mon 25 May 2009 - 0:24

And finally, the last three characters for my first gen continuity (one Sorella and a support staff member). I think I'm going to take a break after this before I start working on any of my second gens. This stuff takes an awful lot of time to do up. Laughing

Sorella overview:

Rosetta is the youngest of my OCs. There’s nothing particularly special about her as a combatant –she’s quite capable and well trained, but the type of stuff she does is just the general types of things GSGs do. Her handler is Norina, a former intelligence agent with a reputation for doing a good job of training those who are put under her supervision.

Rosetta:

SiG SG-552: Rosetta’s main rifle. This is the compact version of the well regarded SiG SG-550, which is considered one of the most accurate assault rifles in the world. It is an excellent weapon, though this excellence comes with a considerable pricetag.
Walther PPS: A very small polymer framed 9mm, only a little bit bigger than the famous PPK which it is considered a successor to. This weapon is well suited to Rosetta, who is quite small (making large firearms difficult for her to conceal on her person) and has small hands.
Brugger & Thomet APR 308P : An extremely accurate bolt action sniper rifle built by Brugger and Thomet of Switzerland and based on the design of PGM Precision’s Ultima Ratio line of sniper rifles. The APR 308P (Police) has a 19.7 inch barrel and is quite compact, with an overall length of just over 31 inchs with the stock folded. Please note that the accompanying picture this time is not an exact match -it's a APR 308, but not a 308P.

Norina:

Walter P99QA: A modern service pistol design that is reasonably sized and possesses reasonably good capacity and excellent ergonomics. The QA (quick action) variant used by Norina offers a more consistent trigger pull then the original trigger set up, in which the first shot had a heavy double action trigger pull and subsequent shots had a light single action trigger pull.

Lastly we have Miranda, Piero’s real little sister and a former Carabinieri undercover officer who managed to convince the SWA to hire her onto their support staff after she managed to track her brother to them. Her main purpose in being at the SWA is to keep an eye out for her elder brother’s well being. She tends to like small weapons that nonetheless pack a decent punch. In addition to this she tends to like to use Italian made weaponry, and tends to tease her brother about his tendency to use foreign gear.

Miranda:

Beretta Model PM-12 S2: Standard issue Carabinieri submachine gun. It is a rather old design, but still a quite capable one. In addition to liking the weapon’s small size, Miranda apparently considers training with this weapon to be “fun.”
Beretta Model 8000F Cougar: Smaller then the more common Beretta 92, but has similar controls and still packs a good punch. While too large to conceal well in some
outfits, Miranda likes to carry this in a horizontal type shoulder holster when circumstances allow for it (the weapon’s relatively short length is a plus when it is carried like this). One thing I like about this design is that it has reasonably attractive lines but also has a very businesslike looking front end, which I think makes it fit Miranda quite well.
Resolver M380: A small and extremely slim DAO pistol chambered in 9x17mm Kurz (.380 ACP). It is more common than the larger M9 variant, though still somewhat rare. Miranda uses this pistol a lot due to its very small size, which makes it very useful for concealed carry.

The .32NAA by North American Arms:

the .32NAA is a bit larger (but not by much) than the .32ACP of the same gun pictured here, but I put it to show how small it is:

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by Robert Frazer on Mon 25 May 2009 - 19:09

Agapita is equipped with a SA80-A2 (The "A2" is there because it's an upgraded version of the original SA80 - outwardly they're very similar, but the easy way to tell them apart is by the cocking handle; the A2 has a grip while the first-generation rifles just have a plain cylinder).

I gave her this weapon for personal reasons more than to reflect her character - the simple fact is is that I'm familiar with it. I don't keep an arsenal and my knowledge of most firearms is limited to Wikipedia, but I used SA80s when I was in the T.A. so I know how they work.

Her character page on the OC Wiki says that she personally chose the weapon because the compact bullpup design is convenient (which I can attest to - also, it doesn't look oversized in the arms of a girl in her mid-teens!) and that it remains highly accurate at range (so my Soldier's Pocket Book tells me, anyway), although she dislikes its troublesome maintenance (I hate weapon cleaning with a passion, it's like the Labour of Sisyphus). It all comes from me over anything else!

The only detail that's her own original position is that she prefers to use an ironsight over a SUSAT - with her enhanced cyborg eyesight the latter optical sight is redundant.

Thought maybe it would be good to get a little discussion going while we're at this...

Robert: Thought I'd point out that there's a strange little carbine relative of the L85 that's been produced called the L22A1. Finding accurate, easily verifiable info on it is hard (one source states that they were converted from the L86A1s rather then L85s, and I suspect that wikipedia's length specs are for an older proposed carbine version that never really got much past prototyping and may not be as short as the L22A1 is). Don't know if you'd ever actually want to use it in your writing, but thought I'd point it out, as it's a distinct weapon that would nevertheless probably operate similarly to the L85A2s you're familiar with.

Another, hopefully clearer pic. This particular example seems to lack rails up front.

This is apparently part of an excerpt from Jane's Infantry weapons (it's not like I own the publication myself, so I'll take the word of the guy who posted it on another forum). According to it, we're both slightly off. Laughing Although according to some of the stuff I've read, even this may be a bit off (in that the production weapons were L86 based while at least some prototyping was done with the L85).

"The L22A2 carbine is a substantially modified variant of the LSW (L86A1), incorporating 'A2' upgrades and differs from the earlier prototype carbine based on the LSW. In 2004, it was planned that an initial one-time buy of 1,400 units would be procured, primarily for issue to tank crews of the Royal Armoured Corps. However, the popularity of the weapon has resulted in additional purchases being
made by the Ministry of Defence. The L22A2 was initially developed as a private business venture by Heckler & Koch."

Same place I found this listed a barrel length of 318mm for the L22A2, though it didn't list a source for that bit. Given the difference between that and the original L86A1 barrel, that would translate into a length of about 572mm, or less then twenty three inchs.

This is apparently part of an excerpt from Jane's Infantry weapons (it's not like I own the publication myself

The price tag on Janes reference books is sickening.

Glocks are not the shit. Glocks can fail the same as any other gun. I've seen it personally, and have even heard first-hand accounts of something as basic as a slide-retaining pin snapping, the slide flying off. Get over the obsession and buy what fits your hand, your wallet, and ability.

Thats why I wait for them to go on B&N...
I mostly have the WW1 planes for the other forum that I'm on sometimes... got at $40, and that was with the 75% discount a few years back.

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by Piero on Tue 26 May 2009 - 19:57

Well, doesn't look like the arsenal of my first gens and their handlers is eliciting much response, so I guess it's time to move to another group. Next up is some Milan RPG characters. Technically, the first fratello I came up with for that was Adelina and Arturo, but I'm not sure their choices are quite as personal as those of some of my other characters in some ways, and since a lot of my first gen characters carry fairly practical weapons, I thought maybe I'd start with something a bit different this time around.

Fratello Overview:

Sonia Milani is a former Polizia di Stato officer who joined the SWA to carry on the work of her sister, a former SISDE agent who was killed. Her and her cyborg, a second gen named Elisabetta, were active for about two years before being transferred to the new branch facility in Rome. Elisabetta looks about fourteen and tends to act like it when she can get away with it. She tends to try to appear cute and innocent, but has a bit of a mischievious streak, and is a lot smarter then people often give her credit for.

Elisabetta:

Walther P5C (Compact): A small 9mm handgun. Not as small as some others, but still quite concealable. I was looking for something kind of cutesy with this gun, and ended up going with the P5C because I felt the previous choice -a Beretta 85- was a bit lacking in terms of hitting power (when hollowpoint ammunition is used, the difference between 9x17mm Kurz and 9x19mm Parabellum is significant).
IMI Galil: For Elisabetta's rifle I wanted to create a dischord by pairing her with a big, mean looking automatic weapon. I'd previously considered something in a heavier calibre, but in the end decided I really ought to have her use a 5.56mm rifle, so I went with the Galil. It should be noted that the NOCS -the Polizia di Stato's counter terrorism unit- made use of a (no longer produced) license built variant of the Galil, which may have given the weapon a boost in Sonia's eyes.
Mauser 86SR: Bolt action sniper rifle. Part of me considered the older Model SP66, which the NOCS used (86SR was used by NOCS' main rivals, the Carabinieri's GIS) but I ended up deciding to go with this one, as it's questionable how many good condition SP66s are available and I think the nine round rather then three round magazine capacity might be appreciated, even if it's a bolt action sniping weapon.

Sonia:

Bernardelli P.One VB: This gun makes another appearance. I guess the fact that it's a distinctive, not widely seen design that has the advantage of being quite slim makes it appeal to me for certain characters. Sonia's example used to belong to her sister Nicola before she was killed and was originally chambered in the civilian legal 9x21mm IMI calibre, though Sonia has replaced the original barrel one made for 9x19mm barrel for practicality reasons. She usually carries this gun in a IWB holster, since it is quite slim but is long enough to present difficulty with other carry methods.

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by Piero on Tue 2 Jun 2009 - 2:30

Been a little bit since I last posted here. Gotten a bit behind with the Milan RPG girls...

Anyway, next up is Gina and Adamo.

Fratello Overview:

Adamo is a relatively young (29), and a former member of the Gruppo di Intervento Speciale, the Carabinieri's elite counter terrorism unit. He is extremely competent and professional when it comes to tactical matters. Unfortunately, this competence does not extend to dealing with the ideosyncracies of young girls. He made the mistake of choosing a teenager as his cyborg instead of a child because he though an older girl would be easier to deal with. He ended up with Gina, a boisterous trickster who has become notorious at the SWA for her tendency to hit on her fellow cyborgs (well, the older looking seconds gens, anyway). So much for "easier to deal with." At least she's good at her job, especially when there's sharpshooting to be done.

Gina:

H&K P7M13: An expensive handgun that is unusual in both design and appearance. Equipped with a unique cocking mechanism, it is capable of delivering rapid, accurate fire while also being extremely reliable and safe to carry. These weapons are also completely ambidextrous, which Gina finds useful due to being left handed. They do have a few flaws though, among them a tendency to heat up rapidly during intensive range sessions -which is one excuse that Gina uses for having more then one of them. She is particularly fond of stainless models, and likes to equip them with wood grip panels.
Modulo Masterpiece Resolver M380: The latest attempt to revive the dimunitive SITES Resolver pistol. The Modulo Masterpiece version seems a little more upscale then the original, as evidenced by it's wooden grip panels. Gina mostly uses one of these as a back up weapon, often contained in an ankle holster.
SiG SG-552: This is one case where Gina has decided to go along with her handler's taste. The SiG SG-552 is a submachine gun sized derivative of the larger SG-550, a rather expensive assault rifle that is consided among the most accurate in the world. (Although I should perhaps really be using the SG-553, a similar weapon that seems to have been made with correcting some issues the SG-552 had in mind.)
PGM Ultima Ratio: A very accurate bolt action rifle chambered in 7.62x51mm. Gina's favorite sniper rifle is one of these in "Commando II" configuration (a configuration she finds suitable for carry in an oblong type viola case thanks to it's folding stock and relatively short barrel). It should be noted that Gina -thanks in part to her left handedness and cyborg strength -it capable of using this weapon more effectively then one might think at close range, as she is capable of holding the weapon's grip in her left hand and working the bolt with her right.

Adamo:

SiG Sauer P226: A high quality combat handgun considered by many to be one of the best weapons in it's class. These guns are not known for their looks, but boast an excellent combination of accuracy, reliability, safety, ergonomics, and simplicity of controls. Adamo favors one of these weapons over the usual Italian issue Beretta 92 due to it's accuracy and smaller size. Like the Beretta 92, it's ammunition capacity can be increased by using enhanced capacity magazines from Mec Gar.
SiG SG-552: See above.

I've considered some other weapons for this fratello, but at present this covers a lot of the ones I'm relatively certain of. And yes, Gina is about the flashiest of my OCs in terms of weaponry. Though in spite of that I've wondered what to do if it turns out that there isn't such a thing as a Stainless P7M13 and that the examples I've seen photos of are actually all nickel plated guns. Seems to me that a nickel plated gun could be a bit more reflective then is desirable in a combat weapon.

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by Alfisti on Sun 20 Sep 2009 - 0:15

EDIT (20160517): Should be noted that this entry is now extraordinarially out of date, and both the Welrod and Sterling have been scratched from their regular armoury.

Well, it's been a few years since my days as a true gun nerd, but anyway:

Fratello Overview:
Monty and Jethro serve as the SWA's away-team, tracking down international Padania interests. As such they operate for extended periods (measured in months) outside of the SWA's support network. Their weapons choices tend towards easily concealable and reliable firearms utilising civilian-legal ammunition. For ease of transport their armoury is limited, particularly when utilizing airlines. In that scenario they have a small smuggling compartment in one suitcase able to carry their pistols, a spare magazine each and a single silencer, or rely on Jethro's extensive contacts to acquire weapons at the other end. Both their weapons are chambered for 7.65mm Browning to simplify logistics.

Monty:
Monty's weapon of choice is the venerable Walther PPK, chambered for 7.65mm Browning.  Monty's example is notably of German post-war manufacture.  Standard loadout is the pistol, plus 1 spare mag and suppressor.  She has a variety of different holsters but prefers to carry in a shoulder rig, garter, or in the small of her back.  The Walther was chosen for its small size, apparently easy to acquire ammunition and proven track record.  Moreover, since it's quite a prolific handgun parts should be reasonably easy to come by.  There are of course smaller and lighter handguns out there but Monty also suffers from a mild case of "born-in-the-wrong-decade" and the Walther fits nicely with the slight spy-fi vibe she affects.

Jethro:
Monty's handler Jethro choses to carry a SIG-Sauer P230 for similar reasons to Monty's PPK.  It's easily concealed and is chambered for 7.65mm Browning as well, keeping the pair's logistics simple.

Fratello Weapons:
The Fratello carries two other firearms on a regular basis.  Though usually operated by Monty, Jethro has also been known to use one of the other from time to time.  As they see less use than the sidearms both are chambered for slightly harder to acquire 9x19mm rounds.

Sterling-Patchett MK.5 (Sterling L34A1) - The suppressed variant of the British Stirling sub-machine gun.  It's a simple, reliable weapon with an apparently very effective integral silencer.  It's built under license in a number of Commonwealth countries and, as it's held in reserve by the British Military, easy for Jethro to get his hands on.  Since the Stirling is usualy transported dis-assembled and only brought out for specific operations it doesn't require the ubiquitous GSG instrument case, hence the horizontally mounted magazine isn't considered an issue by Jethro or Monty. [OUT OF DATE - NO LONGER IN LOADOUT]

Welrod Silent MK.I - The Welrod assassin gun.  Chosen because, well, because it's quiet.  Developed by the British during WWII the Welrod uses a manually operated action to eliminate slide noise. Since Monty and Jethro are often more scalple than chainsaw this seems like a fair tradeoff.  The silencer is also extremely efficient making it possibly one of the quietest guns created. However said silencer only has an effective service life of 10-15 shots before it needs to be stripped and re-conditioned, but to be honest: on the type of operation where the Welrod is used, if it gets to the stage where Monty NEEDS more than 10-15 shots she's probably already in shit anyway. [OUT OF DATE - NO LONGER IN LOADOUT]

OTHER:
Heavier weapons Monty and Jethro tend to aquire and dispose of on an "as needs by" basis.  The AK-47 is of course a perennial favourite.  Monty has however so-far been pictured/written with everything from a French FAMAS to Skorpion Vz.61, spear-gun and all the way to the Moonraker laser.

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by SPARTAN 119 on Sun 20 Sep 2009 - 2:13

Character Overview:
Here are my OCs in my as of yet unnamed, partially written fanfic.

David Wilson: David is a Canadian-born, US-resident, foreign exchange student who, while in Italy, gets himself caught up in a conspiracy involving the Padania, a private military company, and the SWA after he hears something he wasn't supposed to hear. His weapons consist of whatever he can find. I tried to have him use easy to operate weapons instead of anything too complex, at least at first.

Weapons:

FN Five Seven: A 5.7mm semi automatic pistol with a high capacity magazine and excellent body armor penetration.

M16A1 with M203 Grenade Launcher: The M16 has been the standard assault rifle of the US Army for over 40 years now, and is one of the most reliable assault rifles out there, in spite of teething problems in the Vietnam War. The A1 variant is still capable of full automatic fire, unlike the burst firing M16A2, A3, and A4, and it can still mount an M203 grenade launcher for devastating explosive firepower. The M203 is capable of firing a variety of 40mm grenade rounds including high explosive, tear gas, smoke, and buckshot.

AT4/M136 Anti-Tank Rocket Launcher: The AT4 is a light, portable, reliable one-shot anti-tank weapon that is very easy to use, being designed for mass issue. In fact, with clearly marked trigger and safety, a set of simple step-by step instructions printed on the side of the launcher, a label showing how to hold the weapon, and according some sources, even a label reading "AIM TOWARDS ENEMY" (though the AT4 tube I actually picked up lacked the "AIM TOWARDS ENEMY" label), the weapon is practically idiot-proof.

Daniella: An 18 year old Generation 2 cyborg, Daniella meets up with David after her handler is killed while trying to eliminate a pair of Padania terrorists that try to kill David only minute earlier, after he overhears them talking about plans to dispose of the SWA. When she takes David into protective custody, she returns to SWA HQ with David to discover that everyone at the base has been massacred by soldiers of a private military company except for Henrietta, Triela, Claes, and Rico.

Weapons:

Heckler and Koch G36 with AG-C Grenade Launcher: The G36 is effective all around weapon, accurate, reliable, and with decent stopping power. The G36 comes with a dual sight system consisting 3.5x telescopic scope and 1x red dot sight built into the weapon. For extra firepower, Daniella's G36 has an AG-C grenade launcher attached. The AG-C is a 40mm weapon similar to the M203, and like the 203, it can fire a variety of grenade rounds.

MAG-7 Shotgun: The MAG-7 is a South African ultra light pump-action shotgun designed for extreme close quarters combat. In appearance, the MAG-7 looks like an oversized Uzi with as small pump under the barrel. The MAG-7 is a devastating weapon for extreme close range combat, typically inside buildings.

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by boomer_gonz on Tue 22 Sep 2009 - 14:47

Since my main OC takes his tendencies from his trainer, I'll go ahead and describe her first.

Omega has served in many a capacity over her lifetime and after her time in the British SIS prefers versatility and function over most things in a firearm.

-Steyr AUG A1(F88S-A1C variant)
Gaining this weapon while training in Australia, Nyromi immediately fell in love with it. The F88S-A1C is a compact variant of the F88 fitted with a Picatinny rail. Typically issued to front-line combat infantry units with room and weight constraints such as cavalry, reconnaissance, light horse, paratroopers, etc.

-Heckler & Koch VP70
She typically didn't like to carry a sidearm, but if she had to, Nyromi chose this number. Light, compact, and a noteworthy magazine capacity gave this old gun a second life in her hands.

-Parker/Hale M-85
Complaining that the L96A1 was too heavy and felt like an oversize toy, Nyromi dug this relic out and preferred it over the vastly used L96 variants. The Model 85 is capable of precession fire to ranges of 900 meters. The Model 85 has guaranteed first round hit capability up to 600 meters, and 85 percent first round hit capabilities from 600 - 900 meters. The weapon also has a silent safety catch, a threaded muzzle for flash suppressor, and an integral dovetail mount that accepts a variety of sights.

-Fairburn-Sykes Commando Blade(SAS issue)
This is the sidearm that Nyromi prefers over any and all firearms. Due to the design of the blade lending itself to a variety of grip and attack options, Nyromi had this knife on her at all times.

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by ElfenMagix on Wed 23 Sep 2009 - 0:43

My turn with Francesca, as according to the work Boomer and I did in fleshing out such a character from ancient times in cyborg years, this is the answer:

Felix never intended to have Francesca in Sniper or Room Clearing situations, and did not trained her in long guns; although her early missions involved photo recon- so targetting became a major asset for her. He trained her to use a firearm or a knife to take decisive action in taking down a life of a targeted individual as quickly as possible.

Felix first trained her on evidence guns from passed over criminal cases. He chose the one that were simple and best working. They were to be disposed as soon as a case was terminated... But by decree by the Chief, Felix was forced to get Francesca a gun of her own.

In the Spanish Military in the late 1980s/early 1990s, Felix had many guns but like the Walther PPK the most. This when it was time for Francesca to have her own personal/mission weapon, she chose what he had- a Walther PPK.

When Fernando received Francesca some 10 years later, she was given a SiG 239, like Henrietta's, by the Agency, without Fernando's input. Thus she is the only 9mm carrier of his team. (Although Juanita's .38Super is just as bad.)

Like Felix, Fernando trained Francesca to hunt down and fight a good fight using small arms. Fernando's logic to this is: Lets be Brutally Honest and Logical- you are not going to be carrying long arms or big heavy guns in the streets of Rome without getting somebody's unwanted attention! Yeah, you can hide them in instrument cases and back packs, but that will slow you down in taking them out and assembling them in a fire fight. Fernando wanted Francesca to take out her firearm, aim and shoot in under .7 seconds (his speed limit- though he could go faster, but that would mean tearing the inner lining of his suit).

Though he has started on training Francesca and Rachel on rifles in CQC and Sniping, he doubts that he would be in such a situation. Street gun battle fighting is that he thinks is best for his girls. And thats what they know... and do so well.

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by boomer_gonz on Thu 3 Dec 2009 - 10:26

Finally got around to doing this on my to-do list:

Alpha, like his trainer and partner before him, prefers versatility over anything else in a weapon.

His primary loadout is as follows:

-Heckler & Koch G3A4
Alpha has taken cues from other G3 variants as well as the G36 and it's variants heavily modifying his favorite weapon. To start; the fixed, collapsible stock has been replaced with a telescoping collapsible stock.

The barrel has been replaced with a longer 18.5"(47cm) barrel which has been rifled to 280mm with six right-hand twist grooves at progressive twist increasing it's effective range to 500 meters. The barrel has also been threaded at the muzzle to accommodate most suppressor's. The stock piston has been replaced with a heavier piston reducing the rate of fire to 400-450 rounds per minute as well as increasing the muzzle velocity to 920 feet/sec(280 meters/sec) both of which further increasing the rifle's accuracy.

Also a Picatinny Rail system has been installed making use of multiple sight options for various assignments. A brass deflector has also been fitted getting rid of those nagging burnt knuckles.

No, he does not call it Vera.

-Stechkin APB
The only thing better than having one room clearing weapon is to have two.

The Stechkin APB is a selective fire pistol, with a 20-round magazine capacity. The barrel is threaded at the muzzle to fit a factory-built suppressor but only silences the muzzle to roughly that of an un-silenced .22. No modifications have been performed on this pistol save for typical upgrading and replacement of parts.

Alpha's example is also a rare one chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum instead of the common 9x18mm Makarov. These examples were built to accommodate Spetsnaz members deployed with UN Security Forces however rare the situation. As magazines for these models are rarer than the pistol itself, Alpha has commissioned a private magazine manufacturer to custom build magazines for his Stechkin.

One of Alpha's most cherished possessions, this pistol was given to him as a gift from his Russian paramilitary unit formed during his contract with the Russian Army during the Ossetian Conflict of 2008. This was his pistol during his entire indenture which he was to return along with the AK-74M and Dragunov SVDS he requested. His men would later sneak into the armory after it had already been cleared to ship back to Moscow and take it replacing the pistol inside of it's case with a newly purchased Beretta.

-Fairbairn-Sykes Commando Blade(SAS-issue)
A double-edged knife with a foil-type grip; this well known blade was designed for surprise attacks and to significantly aid a combatant in close quarters combat should the need arise.

Another one of Alpha's most cherished possessions, this blade belonged to his former partner.

-ASP F31 Tactical Baton(2 custom)
Alpha is an accomplished master of Kali and Escrima in particular and uses two of these proven law enforcement instruments to that effect. He will typically carry two at his flanks on assignment and usually has these hidden somewhere on his body when not along with a blade. Alpha's are special ordered from ASP Inc. in Wisconsin, USA; and made out of hammer-forged titanium-tungsten carbide with a matte finish instead of the stock stainless steel or aluminum alloy.

Next, weapons of specialty Alpha prefers to use. Evil

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by rusty-spring on Thu 3 Dec 2009 - 14:43

Hell with it, I'm feeling particularly trigger happy today.

Laine/Clayland's Gun Case of Holding

They're all over the place: Egypt, America, Mexico, (maybe even Africa). Why stay in pasta lovers hell Italy when you can see the world a bit? I daresay they're in the actual SWA compound 1% of the year. Unless deliberately wanting a certain gun, they'll just "aquire" one at their destination. Makes traveling easier. They can just fly regular commercial airlines and never have to worry about how they're going to transport their weapons.

I used to be on a big HK kick, so that's why it predominates the selection. Though I've moved away from ze German guns for ze moment.

*Currently using

Handguns Commonly (or ever) Seen:
HK USP Compact
Browning Hi-Power
Glock 17
SIG-Sauer P229 DAK* - Reasoning for this is simple. This is the standard issue sidearm of Homeland Security where Clayland worked after leaving Britain, and before arriving at the SWA. So it makes sense that he'd fall back on a handgun that he's put the most training in.

Submachine gun/Assault Rifles:
HK MP5
AKMS* - Both Laine and Clayland are currently trouncing around Egypt/Mideast, and soon Mexico. What else would you want to take to countries that are predominantly dusty/sandy and have roves of illegal combatants?

Battle/Long rifles:
HK 417
VSSK Vychlop
M14 EBR
DPMS Panther LR-308* - I wanted something distinctively American (Since the British Laine and Clayland are both wannabe Americans), and also a bit ugly. So taking a cue from the iconic AR-15 platform, They've taken a modern .308 Winchester variant from Panther Arms. Every girl needs a .308.

Miscellany:
KA-BAR Tanto - As LoC reminded me (about my own OCs ), if there's ever been a constant, it's been Laine's big ass combat knife. She does like her knives. I switched from the traditional blade to the tanto, because it looks more "badass."

Fully ceramic drop knife (ignore the metal bits, Laine's doesn't have that )- Sometimes Laine doesn't listen, and brings a weapon into International airports and trans-oceanic flights anyways. So what choice does she have but a rather "better than nothing" short bladed folding knife. None of that pesky 25% metal alloy in these. Metal detectors don't have a chance.

And I'm sure this list will change 30 times in the near future. I don't like being confined to the same guns.

Rusty, if you actually care, it might be worth taking note that the old roller locked HKs like the MP-5, G3, and HK33 can be found all over the place (although a lot of them are license built copies). Also, the Beretta 92 can be found all over the place too.

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by Alfisti on Wed 5 May 2010 - 9:32

Now that I've got a much more solid grip on Jethro and Monty's personalities and roles, I thought I might expand on and ammend what's written further up this thread in terms of their weapons choices.

So for those new, the fratello executive summary: Jethro and Monty primarially operate internationally, independent from SWA support and for extended periods of time. Their missions tend more toward the "go, look, investigate, deal with as you see fit" kind rather than having set objectives, eg. "go here, kill him". As such they are geared more toward intelligence gathering and espionage than combat.

So, the updated weapons loadout:

The biggest change of course is, as some already know, I've dropped the Stirling from their lineup. Why? Well as they characters developed and I got J+M's mission profile and MO more nailed down it became more and more redundant to them. Aside from that it used a more difficult to acquire ammunition and was more bulky and difficult to conceal than their compacts... making it a liability in their multitude of border crossings. It is possible they may have carried it in their earlier missions, but eventually ditched it as being too much effort.

I'm also toying with dropping the Welrod [UPDATE - The Welrod is now gone also]:

It however at least fits their MO better than the Stirling in offering an ultra-quiet option for assassination jobs. If I do keep it, it'll change from the larger 9mm Mk.1 (bottom) to the earlier Mk.II using 7.65mm Browning to keep the pair's logistics simpler.

Ok, handguns. These are Jethro and Monty's workhorses. Technical reasonings remain the same: both guns are chambered for 7.65mm Browning (.32 ACP) for its ease of aquisition (J+M often have to buy their own ammo and it's civilian legal most-everywhere I believe) and ease of silencing. Keeping a standardised ammunition for all their guns also keeps their afore mentioned logistics simpler. Compacts were chosen for both of fratello members as well as concealment is more important than absolute hitting power in their line of work.

Jethro still uses a SIG, but it's been notched back from a P232 to a P230:

*sigh... I was really hoping to find a picture of one with a bit of wear on it but this was the best I could do. Jethro has a distinct distrust of plastic (read: anything that isn't steel, aluminium or wood) guns and, if he's going to entrust his life to a weapon, he'd like something with a few miles on it and a proven track record. The P230 was his chosen sidearm during his tenure at the SIS and he's just sort of held onto it with no intention of changing. It spends most of its time holsterd though as Jethro prefers to talk his way in and out of situations.

Monty also retains her Walther PPK... usually silenced:

It now also has a story to go with it... yay. Essentially the PPK was originally Jethro's spare, that he mostly hung onto for shits and giggles. So when it came time to find a suitable compact handgun, chambered for 7.65mm, to give his cyborg it seemed like a natural choice. Monty's particular PPK is of mid-60s manufacture and stamped as being made at the Ulm factory in Germany (meaning it's actually, I believe, from Manhurin, France) and so satisfied Jethro's tendency toward things with a history.

UPDATE: As of Six Degrees, the PPK is an SIS hand-me-down... given to Jethro by his trainer, Algy, whom it was given to by his trainer and so on.

Despite what Major Boothroyd may have had to say about plate glass windows and bricks in Dr. No, it is most definitely not the most powerful weapon out there. Monty doesn't care, and tends to view big guns and large calibres as an exercise in willy-waggling anyway. She is very proficient with it, making up for some of its power shortfalls with skill, preferring to know one gun back-to-front and sideways rather than being sorta-average with a few. Either way, Monty (like her handler) tends to view guns as a last resort measure for when no other options are available. If she can get through a job without killing anyone (unless that's the intention) then she'll notch it up as a victory.

She also has a tendency to wave it under peoples' noses as she kicks information out of them.

Heavier firepower the fratello still tends to acquire as it needs it. However, though Monty can pick up and run with just about any weapon, she tends to be of only average skill with anything that isn't the PPK, Jethro's in a similar boat. Monty is slightly more proficient with some arms that she encounters on a more regular basis, such as the AK47, Scorpion machine pistol and oddly: the MP40 SMG. She has also acquired a Jungle Carbine.

As I've probably mentioned so many times, that its become rather sad... Jay's tiny selection of weapons and gear is designed around the theme of Silence and concealment, with some General Purpose firearms as last resort.

His primary weapon of choice for any non-urban NIght-time mission is the Compound bow. His is an unremarkable PSE Stinger. With a Low-light sighting system, he is able to take out sentries and other targets with a minimum of sound. He also has 4 cyanide tipped arrows for "Special" Targets.

Next weapon at his disposal is his 10 throwing knives as well as whatever odds and ends he can find for ranged distraction. Just remember kids, never try this at home.

For his sidearm, his handler wanted something easily concealable, a high rate of fire, that was easy to maintain. So she choose the Beretta M93R. During an actual mission, he attaches the stock to bring the weapon closer to his center mass, to improve his reaction time. And since it fires 9x19mm rounds, which is one of the most common form of ammunition, he can procure ammo on site.

The last weapon in his arsenal is the H&K MG36 Light machine gun. It accepts standard G36 magazines as well as the Beta-C 100-round drum magazine. It feature a built-in 5x scope and bipod, allowing Jay to function as a light support for a large-scale operation or a rear guard position. During daylight operations, this is his "Guitar case" gun and the only weapon that Jay himself picked out. [Picture taken in Priscilla's apartment.]

His last piece of standard equipment is a black Gerber Multi-Plier 600 multi-tool. Due to his self-taught training of disassembling Electronics and mechanical equipment, he tends to infiltrate enemy strongholds to cut the power and disable other security system for the girls to enter and clean house.

Michele was an "HK snob", but with Noël I decided that since he was effectively re-starting his own firearms training in addition to Noël's, he decided to go with Fabrique Nationale de Herstal this time around.

So their pistols are the Five-seveN and Noël also carries the P90 PDW and F2000 assault rifle.

As Noël's role is as a "scout / sniper", she has three sniper riles she is trained The The Desert Tactical Arms Stealth Recon Scout is her primary weapon since it can be adapted for various calibers, allowing her to tailor the weapon to the role prior to entering the field. When she is performing a snipe in populated areas, she uses the DSR1 "Subsonic". And when she wants to reach out and touch someone, she employs the Barrett XM500 anti-material rifle.

How Elio selected Marisa's beloved Beretta 92FS...

Bianchi: It's time...she should wake up in about a half hour.

Elio: Alright, I'm going to sit in there and wait.

Ferro: Where's her gun? Aren't you going to present her with a gun?

Elio: Oh shite! I forgot to get her a gun! Hold on, I'm going to the armory.

5 minutes later...

Elio: I need a pistol for my new cyborg who's waking up in 25 minutes...what have you got in stock?

Armorer: Eh, we've got piles of these Beretta 92's.

Elio: That'll do...she can chose something more suitable later on.

...but she never did.

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by MP5 on Wed 5 May 2010 - 17:29

Hm, this is an interesting topic...

Ok, let me start with Allison. her primary weapon is an IMI Tavor CTAR-21 carbine with an EOTech 552 Holographic Weapon Sight, similar to the one in this picture, minus the flashlight (Yes, I know it's an airsoft replica. Humor me.):

Why the Tavor? Well, I liked its design, and its ability to accept STANAG magazines as well as its ambidextrous-capable controls. The bullpup design makes it somewhat easier to manipulate in tighter spaces while at the same time retaining the accuracy and range of a battle rifle. In addition, since Brian's mission weapon is an HK416 designed to accept STANAG magazines, it allows her to swap mags with Brian if needed. Its size also makes it relatively easy to conceal inside a guitar bag.

As for her sidearm, Brian picked out a Kimber Custom TLE/RL II:

Brian picked this weapon out based on his own experiences with the 1911 design. As it fires a .45 ACP cartridge, he intended to provide Allison with a reliable sidearm that has knock-down power, primarily on the basis (and his opinion) that 9mm, while plentiful, falls short in the defensive power department. Of course, while Allison is meticulously drilled in marksmanship, having first-shot stopping power is always a plus. Also, there is a lot of aftermarket parts available for the Kimber, including a .22LR conversion kit that drops right into the weapon, making it a simple choice for training, as well as a LaserMax Internal Laser Sight mounted in a special M1911 hollowed-out guide rod. The addition of a threaded barrel also makes the weapon an ideal choice for more covert missions, as .45 ACP rounds are subsonic, and so adding a suppressor does not mean having to change to a special ammunition type.

Other weapons Allison uses:

Denel NTW-20 14.5mm Anti-Materiel Rifle: this weapon sees use in my own Alternate reality version of the Venice incident that has yet to be written.
Spoiler:
In an ironic twist, Dante's escape helicopter is brought down by the same type of weapon he used to slaughter Beatrice.

Heckler & Koch HK416 10.5-inch Carbine: Allison is attached to her Tavor, but occasionally, she will use an HK416 just like Brian's. She prefers it to the original M4A1 it is based on because of its piston-driven system, which other special forces like because of its increased reliability. It is also equipped with a Rail Interface System standard, allowing her to attach the components she desires. She keeps one equipped with an ACOG sight and four spare magazines in the boot of her Lancia for emergency purposes.

LWRC M6A2 PSD (6.8mm Remington SPC): If she demands a little more punch out of an Armalite-based platform, Allison reaches for an M6A2 carbine. It's basically the same as the HK416, only with a slightly larger and more powerful cartridge. The ammunition is also a little more diversionary should forensics teams find the casings, due to the general uniqueness of the ammunition which is not commonly found in Europe. like the HK416, the M6A2 is also very modular, allowing her to attach her favorite accessories.

Colt M4A1 Carbine (SOPMOD): In an upcoming mission to investigate an apparent link between the Abu Sayyaf and Padania, Allison and Brian are deployed to the Philippines without her Tavor. As it is one of the most commonly-used weapons in the world aside from the Kalashnikov series, Brian's contacts as well as Nate's C.I.A. network in the Philippines are easily able to provide them with decent kit, among which is the M4 Carbine. While not Allison's first choice for a primary weapon, maintaining the weapon is second nature to her, and due to the numerous amounts of AR-15-based weapons used by locals in the provinces of the Philippines (particularly in the Sulu Archipelago as well as the Mindanao region), ammunition is not hard to come by, though quality does come into question. In particular, Allison chooses the SOPMOD version of the M4 Carbine because of its modular Rail Interface System.

Dillon Aerospace Tactical Vehicle: When overwhelming firepower is a necessity in mobile form, Allison takes a Dillon Aerospace Tactical Vehicle. basically a GMC/Chevrolet Suburban with an M134 minigun, this vehicle remains relatively inconspicuous until its firepower is needed. Its Dillon Aerospace M134D minigun belts out 7.62x51mm NATO cartridges at an astonishing 6,000 rounds per minute, enough to make short work of most light vehicles that Padania terrorists may use to escape the scene of an assault, as well as low-flying aircraft.

Should have gotten the stainless steel one like Brian!

As I calculate that Marisa would be gone by Noël's timeframe, Elio would probably keep it as a momento of his deceased cyborg's first real mission.

Now, as for a reward to thank Noël for her efforts...considering how she must smell after diving into the Seine I believe a basket of scented bath soaps and shampoo would be very appropriate.

I dunno, I couple of years in the Seine I reckon even stainless is going to look pretty ratty. It's been a few years since I was in Paris, but I'd hazard a guess the Seine is a bit like most rivers that run through cities...

...meaning that it's probably more corrosive and generally harsher on metals than sea water

Re: Behind the choices...

Now, for Scott's weaponry:

Knight's Armament Company Stoner LMG ChainSAW:

It's big. It burns through ammo. It's hopelessly flashy and impractical. It's... a real hoot. When your handler is a diehard Aliens fan who fell in love with the M56 Smartgun, this is your inevitable primary weapon. In order to conceal it during missions, Scott's KAC ChainSAW is hidden in a simple breakaway duffel bag that uses the sling as part of the camouflage. lined with canvas ammo pouches, concealed, the KAC ChainSAW looks like a normal duffel bag. upon contact, however, the bag can be ripped away to reveal a locked and loaded ChainSAW, equipped with laser sight and detachable KAC QDSS-NT4 suppressor. the laser sight makes it easier for Scott to aim without shouldering the weapon, simply tracing the red dot of the laser as he fires. It is designed to clear rooms in CQB situations where engagement distances do not require precision aiming. for situations that would require a more normal shoulder weapon, a re-conversion kit is available to turn the ChainSAW back into a standard Stoner LMG.

SIG-Sauer P229 (.357 SIG):

Using a brand and model type already popular within the Social Welfare Agency, Scott's sidearm is a SIG-Sauer P229 chambered for SIG-Sauer's proprietary .357 SIG cartridge. Scott's particular sidearm is of the 'R' variant, denoting a railed frame version of the same pistol. its chambering is designed to give him the same performance of a standard .357 magnum in a compact autoloading pistol.

Other weapons Scott uses:

Submachine guns:
Heckler & Koch MP5 family: An old standby for multiple police and paramilitary agencies around the world, Scott is apt to use these in a true CQB situation that requires more finesse and accuracy. Despite its 700-900rpm firing rate (depending on the model), the MP5 is very controllable even in full-automatic mode. Its 9mm pistol-caliber cartridge may not be terribly powerful, but controlled bursts negate the need for more powerful ammunition.

TDI Vector Kriss Super V submachine gun (.40S&W)

Machine Guns:
Vektor SS-77 and Mini SS

Ares Defense Shrike 5.56mm Weapons System: For missions that require a slightly more compact weapon, Scott may opt to use a Shrike 5.56mm belt-fed LMG that installs easily on the AR-15/Colt M4/M16 platform. It is also compatible with STANAG magazines in case he is in a pinch for ammunition.

M60E4 GPMG
FN Minimi/M249 SAW

Precision/Sniper Rifles:
Accuracy International Arctic Warfare Sniper Rifle

Mk14 Mod 0 Enhanced Battle Rifle: For occasional Designated Marksman work, Scott chooses the Mk14 Mod 0 Enhanced Battle Rifle for the job. Equipped with Selective-fire, the EBR can be used in a pinch as a CQB weapon if necessary. Its 7.62x51mm NATO chambering provides a weapon with robust stopping power in any situation.

Re: Behind the choices...

Post by Alfisti on Thu 20 May 2010 - 12:58

Interesting comparison that I meant to add when I wrote Monty's weapons choices bit up above. Unforunately at that time I'd lost the site.

When I was looking around for a weapon for Monty, and was hovering around the PPK, I toyed with using some of Walther's other offereings (via Bond Lifestyle):

From left to right: PPK, PPS, P99c and P99.
The P99s are much wider than the PPS and PPK. This quickly ruled out the P99 variants as the double stack magazine would have made the weapon just too bulky for Monty to easily conceal.

Then of course there was just over all size:

Clockwise from top left: PPK, P99, PPS, P99c

Which narrowed the Walther choices down to the PPK and PPS:

The PPS was still larger, but not enough to be a huge concern. However, it had two other things working against it. The first was, and this is just from what I've heard around the interbotz, that its ammunition isn't civilian legal in a number of EU countries. That makes it more difficult for Jethro and Monty to aquire ammo. Easiest just to buy over the counter.

The second is just down to Monty's personal preferences: The PPK is a nice looking gun and is made of metal. The PPS is made of "plastic". It also looks like it fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. Which adds up to the fact that Monty's not going to touch it unless she absolutely has to.

Well, the PPS is chambered in both 9mm Luger and 40S&W. I wrote off Jamie's use of 9mm as being that she can easily get it from the agency, and I'm sure there's a black market for such ammo anyway.

I'm not sure of the individual country legalities of 40cal, as it's not technically a NATO or military caliber, so that might be an option.

Personal preference is an interesting decision maker. Kirika in Noir used a Beretta 1934 in 380 auto, and the lackluster performance of the round was explained away by Kirika's insane accuracy, so that might be an excuse to use.

I've never been partial to PPK's and clones because of the slide bite that occurs with my larger hands, but for a woman, it's probably not a problem.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Glocks are not the shit. Glocks can fail the same as any other gun. I've seen it personally, and have even heard first-hand accounts of something as basic as a slide-retaining pin snapping, the slide flying off. Get over the obsession and buy what fits your hand, your wallet, and ability.

Yeah, I did consider getting 9mm through the Agency but J&M tend to operate for extended periods outside the range of Agency support so generally have to source their own munitions. As to the black market trade in such things: while Jethro most defineately has the contact network for it, it's just one extra complication the fratello doesn't need. Far easier to just buy over the counter with cash and a fake identity. Honestly I hadn't considered .40... And Monty would probably consider it crass anyway sweat

Which I guess leads into personality. I'm not a massive firearms nut (anymore), so tend to pick weapons based on character preferences rather than technical suitibility (within reason of course). In that respect the PPK suits Monty down to the ground.

I would not mind a BAR1918-A2....

Walther is a decent piece of equipment. Like everything else, its all on preference. Perhaps a P88-Compact or P5 compact is in order?

BTW, Fellas. my Walther page needs updating... esp. on OCs who uses them.

Ah, now... car chases. That's a different story. If she needs firepower, Monty'll grab whatever's handy, though yes, her tendancy tends to be toward smaller, more wieldy weapons. Horses for courses really, and Monty's normal course is concealed carry, stealth and espionage rather than heavy-fire combat.

Well, to be honest, I'm not actually looking to replace Monty's gun at the moment. As I said, the PPK (particularly being a vintage example) suits Monty's personality, interests and character down to the ground... even if it's not the most practical weapon anymore. The bit above was just what I thought was an interesting comparison, particularly on scale in that small guns seem to have gone the same way as small cars: they keep getting bigger with each generation untill something new comes along to fill the "small" segment again (PPS is larger than the PPK, new VW Polos are larger than the original Golf).

Will look to updating the Walther page with Monty's weapon details tonight... then you can go and fix my formatting foul-ups tomorrow

Sounds Good, Alfisti!

Now for MP5's (?) Allison (or who ever owns her...), she uses the WA2000, right?

I believe that the PP and PPK have achieved a certain level of character that few gun can say they have. A Luger is a Luger, a 1911 is a 1911, a snub nose police .38 revolver is- you get the idea. They are guns that if you have some knowledge there if, a picture comes to your mind as to what it is! Personally, I like the PP and the PPK. Almost bought one years ago. Yes, I know that the PP and PPK are two very different looking guns...

Yeah, I own Allison, Elfen. As for the WA2000, she doesn't use it, but what I did list is the Denel NTW-20 Anti-Material Rifle.

Then somebody else also uses it as their OC weapon, having it seen referred to.
