Enhanced Reality

Post by sasahara17 on Mon 6 Jul 2009 - 5:01

This idea was brought on when I watched Canaan and saw the title character using her special ability. Having played both Assassin's Creed and Tom Clancy's HAWX, I was struck with an idea.
How about giving the GSGs something like the 'Enhanced Reality System' from HAWX, where a military satellite can help designate and guide the GSGs to their targets? There would be a special interface which alters their visual senses; a GSG could see their targets (and of course other persons/items of importance) 'painted' in various colours (ala Eagle Vision from Assassin's Creed).

If you want to take it a step further, you could even have some sort of 'clairvoyance' ability by allowing them to 'see' through the metropolitan camera system (not sure if Italy has as many security cameras as London). Or you could have some sort of guidance ability by highlighting a path in colours (Runner Vision Mirrors Edge). And then there are also the implications such a technology could have when sniping at long distances...

And then if you want to go even further than that, you could have them get this almost sixth sense where they know exactly where all their targets are in relation to their person at any one time, allowing them to make impossible shots without even looking.

Of course there are obvious limitations, costs involved being the least among them. Obviously the military satellite might have problems seeing underground, and having it cut out at an inappropriate time might have disastrous consequences.

So far I have two story ideas:

1. One of the existing GSGs is selected to test out this revolutionary new system. However when a threat arises when all the other GSGs are out of commission for some reason, the heroine must quickly learn to use the GSG-ERS to its maximum ability to stop the threat. Given it is experimental and has a lot of bugs, the GSG might have a harder time than she thinks.

2. An OC GSG selected to test the GSG-ERS. Lo and behold, she and the scientist who designed it go rouge. Our heroines have to somehow fight this impossibly skilled adversary and kill the scientist while the SWA’s IT teams struggle to wrest back control of the GSG-ERS network and give their own cyborgs an even playing field.

3. A whole team of GSGs are equipped with the system and are sent on this dangerous mission to prove that it is a viable technology.

Well the third idea is obviously a bit more likely, but the other two could make good stories too. I really like the first idea, there's been lots of systems that do something like stick a specialised internet connection in people's brain (Ghost in the Shell, Shadowrun, Virtual Light, Night's Dawn, the Agents in The Matrix, basically bags of ideas), but few of them look at the problems in initial development. You probably would need a satellite to broadcast this much information anywhere you wanted.

Did you see Eden of the East? There was some software in that show which recoginised any image of a person or object, and projected an informative label as you looked at the person through the video camera on your phone. The girls could make some use of that, though it would add to the danger of their super-senses getting distracted.

Well since this has been moved to the Lab, we should probably talk about the practical limitations of such a technology in respect to the GSGs as well as where developments in this area could take future GSG operations.

Obviously speaking with respect to possible limitations, the cost of implementing such a system would be astronomical. Unless the SWA could borrow someone else's existing infrastructure (US military network) sending up their own satellite is certainly an expensive proposition. Not to mention the number of problems they would have trying to program software to use the ERS, as well as actually building the hardware (prosthetics) that can use it.

Another thing I'm curious about is how the GSG's brains would handle the inflow of information. While obviously I've described HOW the system is meant to alter their perceptions, will it work out that way in reality? Would their brains be able to take in all the additional inflow of data? I can see this system giving GSG severe headaches from its use, and overuse of said system might even render one brain dead.

Sorry haven’t seen it, although such a thing could definitely be an extension of the ERS (we really should come up with a better name for it since ERS is HAWX terminology). Recognising a random stranger in the toilet while having dinner with your handler as Franca the terrorist could be a real handy trick.

Just to specify, I’m interested these abilities.

a) The ‘clairvoyance’ ability where an urban metropolitan camera network is used by a GSG to literally see around corners or see a location a long way from their own, and

b) The ‘path finding’ ability, where the system works to ‘highlight’ the fastest or safest route through an urban environment for the GSG to follow ala Parkor, and

c) The ‘guided shot’ ability, where the system helps a GSG make near impossible shots at beyond visual ranges by calculating the trajectory of a bullet and the trajectory of a target to make an accurate shot.

Man, fight scenes between two ERS equipped cyborgs that would be maddening with abilities like this. It’s like adding a third dimension to a game of chess.

The best solution might be to stick an AI in their heads, or just conect them to one back at base, which processes all the data and presents the best path or shooting angle. I think one Sci-Fi story called something like that a 'familiar'. The cairvoyance sounds handy, but if the girls couldn't see what was in front of them at the same time, they'd be well advised to use it one at a time in pairs.

A slightly off-topic, but rather cool, shooting aid was a link from cybernetic eyes to the barrel of a pistol, so could see what you were firing at while keeping your head behind cover.

All this would be seriously expensive, so it could only be used with a prospective widespread distribution of the technology in the future, perhaps after the girl test it out in the field.

With American fighter pilots throughout the years, the more complex the HUD and Targeting Systems, the more likely it would be that they would turn it off in the heat of battle because they do not want to be bothered by a computer telling them what to do so they can concentrate on the actual fighting. This is a known fact in the US Military, and they have been trying to figure out a more passive system for fighter pilots. I would believe the same applies here- too much input and the girls will shut off the system and go hunting naturally.

Left to chance if I had to work with a computer and without one. I would prefer to work without one and deal with the senors mother nature gave me.

Sounds like Cortana from Halo. Anyway, I'm not sure about the 'familiar' AI (although Triela nicknaming her AI partner Octavius might be good for a few laughs). The processing of the sensory input though the base mainframe sounds more SWA since it also allows them to keep tabs on their agents.

@Ghostfriendly wrote:The cairvoyance sounds handy, but if the girls

True, true. But I'm sure with snough (read, alot) of training, a GSG could still move even when her visial sences are looking at her body from a third person perspective (altough I can imagine the training regime would be hediously tough and awkward).

@Ghostfriendly wrote:A slightly off-topic,

Ohhhh! Now this is what I'm talking about! There are weapons designed to shoot around corners, but if the shooter him/herself can aim around corners/behind cover, then this would be fantatsic! Just the kind of thing cyborg gunslingers should be capable of.

@Ghostfriendly wrote:All this would be seriously expensive,

Well, we are talking about all this in a hypothetical situation. it's more likely we'd see this in GitS rather than GSG, but hey we can dream right?

@ElfenMagix wrote:With American fighter pilots...the more complex the HUD and Targeting Systems...they would turn it off in the heat of battle because they do not want to be bothered by a computer...so they can concentrate on the actual fighting.

That damn troublesome computer huh? Sounds to me like the system developers (so called 'experts') forgot to ask the fighter pilots what needed and sinstead threw in all the stuff they thought a would make a good system.

I can still remember that documentary about dogfighting in the Vietnam war. F4 Phantom, Several missiles and no gun. The vets in the video didn't seem to think very highly of the decison not to put in a gun. Missiles make dogfighting obselete. Gee, what were those experts thinking?

@ElfenMagix wrote:This is a known fact in the US Military, and they

Agreed. We could obviously play this up. Include all this 'awesome stuff' for the GSGs to use, and then most of is turns out useless (or worse, even hampering). So what is useful, and what isn't?

Obviously as Ghost said, the 'clarivoyance' sbility is flashy, but has few practical uses unless the GSG undergoes extensive training. The 'aim around corners' ability though, I bet plenty of soldiers would sell their right nut to have something like that.

Computers break but eyes don't? Hm, well I'm to much of a tech-addict to fully agree with you since I can't even calculate 2+2 without a calculator these days, but I can see where you are coming from.

When I'm playing a video came (usually a fighter flite sim or FPS), I would have usually shot at my target before the stupid computer tells me to shoot.

Just reminded me of something.

Have you played HAWX yet? I guarantee any Ace Combat player will be wondering what to do with the fancy ERS. It's nice at making runs at ground targets hidden among skyscrapers, but against air to air it's faster for me just to kill them the old fashioned way given it projects this overly long route to the enemy's six o'clock. The game keeps track of my ERS kills however, so I have to spend time flying though the gates to register the kill and get me EXP points.

I can see how novices would like using it from time to time, but given the number of escourt missions in this game I can't phantom how you could make the kills fast enough using ERS to protect your objective. Seriously the game THROWS enemies at you.

Anyway, enough of my winging. Carry on.

I hated the ERS system of HAWX. The fact that you can only pull dogfighting maneuvers in it (and only in ERS mode) made me hate it more. Ace Combat felt better, due to the fact that dogfighting felt more fluid - then again, they're both arcade simulators, not real flight simulators.

I thought it made a handy ground target killer. Dodging missiles and A2A kills were useless, but A2G was always my weak point (since I kept crashing into buildings as I pulled out of my boming run) so I found it pretty useful.

Well I seriously doubt a real military jet fighter can carry 200+ missiles on a single mission. Still, realism isn't really what Ace Combat is about (no, it's about mad arcade style dogfights, bad dialogue and stroking the player's ego... which amounts to me being happy). As for real flight sims... I'm not too good at them.

The ERS is annoying in that it only gives chase, AC is much better.

Those that want realism but still have fun, go for the Wings over/Strike Fighters series by Third Wire.

yeah an ers sys would be useful, but it would be difficult to implement. the Girls carry out operations indoors mostly, so sat images are almost useless. there is also nothing to ID targets with unless you tagged them earlier. so while ERS is a good idea, it might not be too useful.

Returning to the original idea, getting the gun (or maybe its sights) online, or maybe integrating a computer which calculates trajectories would probably allow for the use of an aiming aid such as the one in many games, perhaps with an "expected spread" as added goodness. As for the story ideas, they're good, but perhaps the second looks most interesting from my point of view (scientist and cyborg gone missing). They could have gone to a mafia (or Padania), the system might have malfunctioned and she could've killed the scientist... The fights the new system would allow would be pretty interesting, specially if they don't manage to shut her off the satellite.

Can satellites track heat signals?. It won't give you the precision we'd want, but it can tell you "Hey, heat source here. Watch out." But it might be impossible if you want it for let's say, the sixth floor out of twelve. The satellite would just pick a lot of heat from all the floors, and tell you to figure out which is where. But I still think that the best application would be adding some sort of AI to the gun (or some piece of equipment they carry while on the mission) and plugging it in to their nervous system through some old fashioned wire. Ugly, but no interference, no need to worry about jammers or underground reception, and most importantly, no open ports. If you want to have a system that uses satellite information you need something that sends and receives information - an enemy with some real good knowledge of computers might be able to hack in and "crash" the cyborgs brain, or something.

Best thing would be to make the girls' brains compute that subconsciously, but I don't think that's possible.

A satellite likely would be too crude. Better to use a small UAV that can orbit the target (that is what I use in my fiction to support the fratelli).
