Just trying one now...not bad at all. I usually don't go in for the mixed drinks, but there's potential here. And to think, I'd only been mixing my vermouth with rye whiskey (ala Manhattan).

Well it's definately one of my group of friends' staples... and a decent cold-weather alternative to the Gin and Tonic (doesn't go too badly sans-ice either in that case). Expect to see Jethro and Monty sucking them down if they ever get around to going somewhere cold.

Hmm, sadly I'm not much of a whiskey drinker (for some reason it gives me a headache), but next time I get the chance I shall risk some Vermouth with rye.

Your whiskey issue notwithstanding...if you like this Negroni you might also enjoy a Manhatten.
2 parts Canadian blended whiskey (or rye...I've even seen bourbon used)
1 part sweet vermouth
Bitters to taste

Random B/W photography... all shot on Kodak BW400CN film stock, Minolta XDs manual focus SLR.

From the Land Rover training day:

Spoiler:

Also went to dinner at Cloudland... kinda non-plussed on the food. Good, but not for the price. Was worth it for the interior design:

Spoiler:
They also gave me a full glass of port, which got shared around the table 'cause if I'd drunk it all myself I'd have needed carrying out.

BW400CN is technically a b/w film, but uses C41 colour processing, so if you scan it as a colour negative you get a sort of red-ish/magenta hue to the shots:

Very nice work, you got great depth of focus on that last one. It inspires me to pull my old Canon's out of the closet and brush up on my full-manual skills.

One thing I always got a kick out of was how many supposedly spectator restricted areas you could sneak into (particularly at motorsports events) with a manual SLR, a big lens and a hand-held light meter around your neck. Pretend you know what you're doing and people assume you belong there.

Do it...

Haha, yeah... that's one of the reasons I like using film for street: film seems to carry more kudos than digital, you can get away with more using a film camera since people seem to assume that you're either professional/eccentric/an arts student/all of the above. Plus it's great plausible deniablity "can you show me your photos?" "Well I'd love to but it's film".

I've been seriously considering giving Monty a film camera for that exact reason.

A pair of AE-1's (about 1983 I estimate) and a '68 FTb. They all use the FE style lenses, but the old FTb doesn't use the automatic f/stop feature.

It's getting hard to find competent developing though, so I admit I've been using digital for everything over the last few years.

Nice... I really like using the older style cameras, there's a little more guess-work involved. It's horses for courses really though, they're great fun, but for product shots or stuff where you need to shoot the same thing over and over again it's hard to beat digital.

I can't remember, did the AE-1 have an apature priority setting as well, or is it just the shutter priority?

I hear you on finding competent photo labs as well. I only know of two where I live, the one in Fortitude Valley I've not tried, but Pro-lab in South Brisbane's pretty good. Though I've not had a chance to try it they'll push films or cross process as well which is always nice.

Talking Canon reminds me: I've got an early 60s Canonette rangefinder sitting on my shelf... really should put that in for repairs. I've had it for almost 6 months now but after the last set of camera repairs cost almost $200 I've been putting it off untill other financial stuff's been dealt with.

I don't remember an apature priority...the AE-1 was in production for a long time though, even my two have different features. As I'm at sea right now I can't just walk over to the closet and check.

Sadly, repairs on old cameras often end up costing more than the camera is worth.

Every-so-often a comment pops up on this over on dA, thought I might share it here too. About a year old, but I'm still pretty proud of it:

Old crossover fanart featuring Yuki Nagato on the bridge of an Royal Manticoran Navy Apollo class light cruiser. I always got a kick out of Nagato's white beret in the "Day of Saggitarius" episode, as in the Honorverse, only those deemed fit to command one of Her Majesty's warships are allowed the white beret.

A mate and I litterally spent weeks researching for this one: dealing with uniform discrepencies (those on the covers of the books are not infact correct... luckily David Weber wrote an RMN manual of dress), kicking around bridge layouts, finding a force mix, ships available at that point in the timeline (you can't read it at this res, but each ship of Yuki's escort squadron is named), a suitably "unimportant" frontline system for the fleet train to be in etc.

Anyway, dA version here. There's a lot of Honorverse geeking goes on in the comments, including an expliation of terms, description of rank structure and exploration of tactical options open to Captain (JG) Nagato

I hated InDesign when it first came out, but I had to learn it because at the time, Adobe said they were dropping PageMaker (which I'd been using since the Aldus days).

Of course now I can't live without it.

Amen.

Honestly this semester's been a bit of a crash-course in other parts of the Creative Suite that aren't Photoshop (the only program I'd used up till now). Just why Adobe can't standardise across the Suite I don't know, it's bloody frustrating. Give them credit, it's getting there. But things like turning on rulers and smart guides are still in different places for each program. It's not a massive difficulty to hunt them down, but just... inconvenient.

One little detail that I like is how on the contents list you've arranged the text so that names are on the top line beside the headings, giving them suitable prominence (although unfortunately it falls apart on "Top Gear Italy" - how about "Kara takes Top Gear Italy stateside" instead?). In general I like how the text is present and informative but doesn't dominate the page - a problem that comes up with magazines sometimes are covers which drown half the page in straplines. You have a balance here, and the light colour is also aesthetically fitting with the art. I enjoy Monty's fluttering headscarf, although her right wrist looks a little off to me - part of her arm is concealed behind Jethro's own, but it still appears to be too thin.

Haha! I actually hadn't noticed the names... happy fluke there You're right though, it would work better with a name in front of "Top Gear Italy".

As to Monty's wrist, it does appear thin here (though she is quite skinny). Perhaps I should have added some folds around where it crosses Jethro's sleeve, might give it a bit more volume. Shall keep it in mind, unfortunately my chance to change it on that picture is long past

Thanks for the compliment on layout as well. I was really hoping to keep it clean, taking ques from publications like DQ, (inside) Interior Design Review, *wallpaper, Urbis and the like. Magazines with lots of straplines and pictures bug the crap out of me. Car magazines in particular are awful. With the possible exception of INTERSECTION they almost universally look like they were put together by a colourblind 5 year old with ADHD. EVO used to do a decent job, but recently they seem to have this burning desire to slam every single article somewhere on the cover.

Keeping the colour pallete minimal gave me headaches though. Originally I was intending to do most of the text in white with red to match Monty's scarf, but it was too light against the light background so some time was spend fiddling to find something that would work otherwise, but the grey-blue's come up alright.

Wasn't there talk about Australia annexing East Timor a while back? Perhaps the idea is due for a revival - that place has the right climate for cultivating coffee beans. Perhaps you ought to mention the value securing a controllable supply of a vital resource to your MP, get the wheels turning early.

Yeah, quite awhile ago during the whole intervention deal. Might not be a bad idea actually, with the government's ridiculous mining tax we'll have to find another source of income... talk about killing the goose that laid the golden egg. But that's a rant for another time.

I hope so... fortunately I've got a few months before it's even approaching warm enough to do a summer issue

It's Summer here in the Northern Hemisphere... Wink

I certainly would not complain about eight issues a year... Incoming!

A J-turn is when you start in reverse and swing the car about to go foward. It is also called a BootLegger's turn.

Another one:

This is a modified J-Turn into a parking space; very useful in NYC!

And I was always weary of cars being sold from the little old from Pasadena drove, for she was a drag racer! Anyways, here are some grannies making tea and doughnuts!

In the cafeteria, Alpha walks by and notices the pic that Sandro is eyeing as he scratches his chin. Suddenly, Alpha remembers the day after he returned to the SWA and walked around Rome as he hadn't seen it in five years. Recalling how people stared at him, pointed, and occasionally scratching their chins in the same way Sandro did; Alpha remembers that day he was wearing a pair of baggy black denim shorts with an oversized dark grey workshirt; untucked with the sleeves rolled up.

Sneaking away, Alpha smirks as he also recalls Ferro telling him that his fashion sense makes him stick out like a sore thumb in Rome.

Sit Fast! - Avise Mancini talk mess hall etiquette

"...using your nameplate as a bipod, and with ten matchheads and a strip of napkin for charge and wadding, can make a cigar tube excellent tabletop artillery. When passing notes for the officers, waiters are advised not to cross round behind the CO's table, in case he asks to read them. I also reccomend applying a little boot-polish to the seat of your trousers - you will be able to conceal the shine beneath the tails of your jacket, and the extra smoothness makes it much easier to quickly slip from your chair and under the tablecloth when you want to crawl along and tie someone's shoelaces together..."

Oddly enough I did originally intend to title that article "J turn", but I prefered the way "Hand Brake Turn" set

Good choices. As usual, great composition & utilization of creative depth of focus. Some captions to tell us what we're looking at would be nice...but then again it was 3am when you posted these.

Been concentrating pretty heavily on the comic... which sadly means my OCs haven't been getting a whole lot of screen time.

Fix'd

Jesse, Amy and Dan... I miss drawing these three.

I also kinda miss drawing boobs... Monty, and GSG in general sadly don't leave a whole lot of flexibility in that respect

I would not say that, Alifisti. Just the styles are different, though both are great in their own ways.

Well, there's only one way to get better at anything drawing related: practice. Colouring always used to throw me for a loop as well. One of these days I'll have a dig back through the archives and throw up some old stuff for shits and giggles.
