I would not say that, Alifisti. Just the styles are different, though both are great in their own ways.

Cheers man.

Well, there's only one way to get better at anything drawing related: practice. Colouring always used to throw me for a loop as well. One of these days I'll have a dig back through the archives and throw up some old stuff for shits and giggles.

As I've said before you use varying depths of focus to great effect. Another plus here is that you managed to get everyone ignoring the camera. Candid shots are much more interesting than posed!

Summer 20xx edition of fQ now available for purchase from the Agency shop:

Your cover model for this month is Robert's Agapita, clean version of the pic here.

If you've not guessed I'm trying to make the "La Famiglia" features reflect what's going on around the forum a bit. Hope no-one minds me borrowing characters.

Have some music:

Classic job as usual. I'm not getting mail aboard the boat off the African coast, but I shall look forward to finding my copy in the mailbox when I arrive home.

Is that some bicycle polo I see going on in the background? Have you ever seen a 1975 Sean Connery-Candice Bergen film called The Wind and the Lion? It includes a short, but comical bicycle polo scene at the palace of the Bashaw of Morocco. Excellent movie, with an epic musical score by Jerry Goldsmith. Elio approved.

Speaking of Elio...

Elio: I'm reviewing the girls Shakespeare play? Jeeze...tough duty. How do you review something everybody loved, but everyone also knew was god-awful?

HILSHIRE (leaning over shoulder): Just say it's self-depractory, or ironic. That way, you get to have your cake and eat it - enjoy base vulgarity while still appearing aware and sophisticated.

AVISE (whispering out of the side of his mouth): Or say it's about sex. Or drugs. Or homosexuality. Or homosexual sex while on drugs. Trust me, those pink ponces in Literature departments across Europe will lap it up. You'll cited in fifty articles before the summer's out.

PRISCILLA (bouncing up and down): Ooh, ooh! I know! It's a critique of the concept of the literary canon, which far from inspirational is actually stultifying. It is foisted on schoolchildren who are not at a stage to fully appreciate it, and thus they either flounder in frightened impotence, or have their imaginations throttled by excessive deference to established authorities, which in all other academic ventures has been dismissed as obsolete scholasticism. Children and thus either belittled or disaffected, hence their poor performance, but the adults still enjoy it because the children's lack of insight enforces their cultural hegemony regardless - while not realising they are perpetuating a self-destructive spiral of decadence and the atrophy of intelligence.

*Elio, Hilshire and Avise all give Priscilla pitying stares*

PRISCILLA: ...okay, it's all about LSD. And maybe Triela is Jesus.

Indeed it is bicycle polo, chosen sporting pursuit of the modern hipster. Can't say I have seen the movie, but will add it to the list.

@Professor Voodoo wrote:Elio: I'm reviewing the girls Shakespeare play? Jeeze...tough duty. How do you review something everybody loved, but everyone also knew was god-awful?
Monty: Well it was going to be you or Hilshire, and he managed to back out first.

You did mention that Elio was a bit of a cinema buff, so I figured he'd get lumped with reviewing duty.

Pre-adolescent cyborg assassins performing Shakespeare? The whole thing is kind of an acid trip...and Triela certainly performed a miracle by keeping Allison's set building under control.
@Kiskaloo wrote:My favorite scene is when the Marines march through the city and attack the palace.
Favorite line (if I must choose);

The Raisuli (Sean Connery): With men such as these who needs guns that fire many times promiscuously? (a great cheer comes from his men)

Eden Pedecaris (Candice Bergen): Machine guns?

Raisuli: Yes, machine guns.

Mrs. Pedecaris gives him a wilting stare.

Raisuli: (sighs quietly, so only she can hear) All right, maybe I don't believe it either.

Why does that sounds like Gunslinger Bink II... NO

Spoiler:
5 months before, in the SWA

Chief Lorenzo: How is our new recruit doing?
Ferro: She has managed to pass the physical training, but just barely. Jean will be issuing a firearm to her, preferably a SIG Sauer P232-SL, and an Alpha Romero Spyder 2000 as her personal vehicle.
Chief Lorenzo: Does she suspect anything?
Ferro: Suspect? This is a law enforcement/public safety/rescue agency. That’s is all we do, that is she needs to know.
Chief Lorenzo: And if she questions being given her own personal firearm?
Ferro: She has been put through fire arm training. She understands the need of having a weapon, and when to use it.
Chief Lorenzo: Good. What of the Pia and Ernesto Team?
Ferro: They are still undercover, investigating several cases of LSD overdoses in North Eastern branch.
Chief Lorenzo: LSD?
Ferro: It is believed to have originated as an Ergot Mold poisoning case, but further testing showed that the Ergot was refined into its more powerful LSD variant. Further investigations showed that only a few victims were stricken, but in cluster groups. 3 in one town, 5 in another, as little as 2 here and there.
Chief Lorenzo: Sounds like an old tactic once proposed in the 1950’s.
Ferro: Sir?
Chief Lorenzo: During the Cold War, it was proposed by certain members of NATO for the use of secret agents to contaminate the enemy’s water supply with LSD. Some of the methods discussed were: cloud seeding, reservoir dumping, and water-plant contamination. All in hopes to have the targeted nation’s population in an LSD Hallucination Frenzy, and make an invading army simply walk in without firing a shot.
Ferro: I see.

Spoiler:
If you have not guested it, its a GsGXCDRR crossover. They are talking about Tammy Squirrel.

Shocking Revelation!

Fratello Quarterly is canonical!

Here's a well known scene from chapter 49...

...but what's "Alba" reading in the background?

The first 4 letters of the title are Fratel. It is clear to me that this is an issue of Fratello Quarterly before it got its slick redesign.

Well, I'm just glad fQ got its re-design. The issue Alba is reading looks like an Archie comic.

Fortunately I have a job where I don't actually do much...I just have to be there in case they do need me to do something.

The downside; they frequently need me to be there for a month or more.

ARIA fortunately lends itself quite well to that, what with it's sort of sleepy, dreamy pace and general lack of guile. Quite a lot of the anime and manga are actually just scenery porn. Very Happy

Heh, no unforunately. That scene came before I started doing the fQ covers so I think that's just a happy co-incidence... and a case of Voodoo having really sharp eyes and far too much time on his hands. Razz

First up: IF ANYONE IS LOOKING TO COMMISSION A GOOD ARTIST please consider this offer.

Anyway, for those interested, here's some photos from: The Great Wesley Hospital Food Services "We Got Flooded In" Slumber Party.

Of course, to have a slumber party, you first need to get there... which was complicated by obvious obstacles. Took me an hour and a half to make a trip that usually needs 15 minutes. Water still on the rise at this point (Wednesday morning, 7am):

0430, Thrusday morning, just after the flood was predicged to peak. A few of us decided to wander down to Coronation Drive (overlooking Moorlands Park) to see what the waters were doing. This road is normally somewhere between three and four metres above the river:

Croquet club across the tracks from the hospital carpark, Thursday afternoon:

Same building, Friday midday. Flood waters starting to receed, smell-o-gram... not so great:

More to come (possibly) once I get my roll film developed. First shots taken with digital point-and-shoot. Later taken with iPhone and "instagram" app.

Well, as some of you know, my furniture finally arrived on thursday...

Considering the pretty dodgy space and limited budget, (and that the bed was already there, so I didn't get a say in that one) I don't think this has gone too bad.

Still need to get something for that bit of wall in front of the desk. I'm thinking either an old tram destination reel, or the light blue variant of the "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster.

Cheers Triela... I would like to put a painting or something up, unfortunately we're renting here and I don't want to go punching holes in the walls. sweat I'm thinking if I get a poster I'll get it framed and just lean it against the wall.

In other news, Autumn 20xx issue of Fratello Quarterly is now available for purchase.

Sadly there's no iPad version yet.

Your cover model for this month is Kara Pagani.

Excellent work on Kara's hand...I know you've mentioned how vexing they can be. I really like the effect of the sail above her head too, it almost looks "in motion."

As for the articles, very clever...all references to fanfiction & forum shenanigans. I wonder what your non-Cyborg Central fans (on DeviantArt) must think.

Yeah, I generally try to get the magazine articles to reflect what's been going on around here over the previous quarter (plus it saves me having to think up titles myself). As to what the dA mob think... no idea, fQ's really meant for the forum folks anyway.

That said: I usually try to link what the articles are reffering to back to their roots in the artists' comments. Who knows... maybe we can get one or two others to our fair forum.

I actually had a look through your entire gallery for the first time. You have a lot of really awesome stuff, mate.

I adore the picture of Lorna from ex-Driver in the Mondrian. Changes and Freak Fashion are also amazing. And Wind Power could almost pass for a Kara pic.

Who are Jesse and Amy? They look really cool.

Cheers mate.

Jesse and Amy started out as what are called "design personas", basically characters representing a specific market segment. So you do all your research, distill down an average, turn it into a character and then design for that character. It's just a bit more interesting and easier than looking at straight numbers and data. Anyway, Jesse came first, but then we (my design group) realised she had turned out a little too much like us to be truly useful, so Amy came along to fill the rest of the gap. Anyway, after the project was over I liked them so much that I continued to use them. I originally intended to use them in a "slice of life/gag of the week" type comic but yeah...

Anyway, the short version of their characters:

Jesse's a 20 year old, perma-broke, 2nd year design student, personality wise she's sort of a hyper-relaxed version of Monty. So workaholic, focused, jaded and kinda grumpy, but she's been around long enough to be amused by the world's stupidity rather than get worked up about it. She works as a barista at a small coffee shop (called WiP) in Brisbane's West End, armchair Socialist, graphic artist, indie music afficinado (funk, SKA, minimalist trance, blues and jazz... has an annoying tendency to know about bands before anyone else), coffee-nazi, can't drive but rides a bicycle (a massive single-speed stepthrough that weight approximately two tonnes), fan of all-day-breakfast, allergic to comic-sans... you get the idea.

Amy comes from a well-to-do family, is 18 and a first-year business student. Honestly she's only really at university because her parents told her to go. She's popular, loud, likes electro and clubs, dresses in the latest youth fashions... unforutnately she's a bit heavy and hasn't learned to work with that rather than just buying what's on the manniquin. She has her own little posse but sort of latched onto Jesse during a cross-disciplinary subject. Jesse likes her, but can only really handle her in short bursts. She's a really nice kid, but not bright. Drives a Hyundai Getz that her folks bought her.

There was a third member of the group, Dan, who is Jesse's mate from highschool. He's a science student, less jaded than Jesse and a full fat communist. Likes his music in live, his drinks in beer, his holidays in camping and is perfectly happy flaking out on the veranda which a brew and some mates. Drives an early-90s automatic camry stationwagon and is basically Jesse's transport. Honestly Dan was one of our group members writing himself... which was fine because he's the most annoyingly cool person I know.

Re: Alfisti's Sketchings

Post by Alfisti on Sun 24 Apr 2011 - 10:11

Not... entirely certain where to drop this one, but since the rest of the fQ stuff is in here:

dA variant.

I've had a few ideas for an fQ fashion shoot for awhile, these two fit into the same general thematic vein so having a stab with them seemed like a resonable idea. Playing with black and white rendering too, which I've decided isn't any easier than rendering in colour.

Other stuff, Triela's dress is from SOOT. which is the lable of a mate from uni. Girl knows how to select a fabric. The semi-transparent component of the ensemble gave me a few headaches... not aided by the fact that the picture I was using wasn't the greatest, so I was having to guess a bit at the dress's structure.

And yes, if you check in Vol. 6 of the manga, there is indeed an LC2 in 'Sandro's apartment. Apparently he uses it to store books on, which is at least more sensible than trying to sit on the thing.

On J+M's side, Monty's sunnies aren't really Ralph Lauren, but they're similar to some that they do sell and that I had in mind at the time. Anything marked as "Beatrice Lane" or "Beswick & Tomkins" is stuff I've made up for them.

I actually quite like that look on Jethro... probably sans-tie though. Oh, and thanks to Kisk for loaning me Michele's Ferrari. Wink

Well, she did have some sort of silk nighty thing on at some point in the manga...

Well the dress itself is two components, black under and transparent over, but I also doubt it's something she'd wear in canon... or runny mascara for that matter. Hence "fashion shoot", where you can get away with people being out of character in their dress sense and poise as it's all under the control of the photographer, not the model. Wink

Cheers mate.

Actually I had outfit ideas for a few different fratelli, but these were the only two that I was happy with the shoot ideas for. Agapita was the closest to getting a shot in this (she fulfills my need to draw girly clothes... sorry Robert ), but I couldn't figure out a way to get Avise in neatly that I was happy with...
