Remember that there are hundreds of failures for every successful design idea.

I can't say that I wouldn't be intimidated at first by that thing above, but I would quickly realize that the wheels are susceptable to arty or explosives, and an immovable tank is a poorly placed and extremely vulnerable pill-box.

A proposed WWII German oversized tank, never actually built, the P-1000 Ratte. Armed with two 280mm (11 inch) naval guns, two 128mm anti-tank guns, 8 20mm AA guns, and 2 15mm machine guns, equipped with armor that could have only been pierced naval gunfire and aerial bombing and powered by two U-Boat engines, the Ratte was more a land battleship than a tank. Intimidating and lethal to land forces without air support, but, had one actually been built, i suspect it would have been very vulnerable to aerial bombing.

Ratte fact sheet, translated from German.
More info on the Ratte, with a scale model compared with model tanks and trains.

Quite aside from the vulnerability to air attack issue, just imagine the mobility problems such a machine would have.

Yeah... takes up at least two, possibly more lanes on a highway*, gets about fifty feet to the gallon*, and can destroy many bridges without firing a shot, simply by driving over it!*

its top speed wouldn't be that great either,it could only be used on open land,so mostly against the Soviet forces, and would sink in the mud at the first drop of rain,it's tracks would be another obvious weak point, break one with a mine or anti tank gun and it grinds to a halt and can you imagine the sort of equipment you would need to repair a broken track on that thing ?

1. Use Rat tank as behind-the-lines mobile pillbox/artillery. Much like those railroad-based cannons.
2. Couple Rat tank with spotter planes/forward artillery observation units for beyond visual range capability
3. Build AAA emplacements around operating area, plus quick-response fighter airstrips
4. ?????
5. PROFIT

That thing's pretty cool. Though I don't think you'd actually want that tac light on it while incognito.

"Oh, just my spare laptop battery."

"With an attached flashlight?"

"Yes."

"And a strange round opening on the one side?"

"Yes."

When carrying a PC laptop, I opt for having the second battery in it instead of the secondary drive (ie: cd/dvd drives). I dont when I carry my mac laptops. I have been known to carry 4 laptops on me to certain jobs.

My crappy old Seanix had under spec battery lie even when new, by the time it was three years old or so it would list itself as fourty five minutes even when I made serious efforts to conserve power. One of the reasons I got the optional nine cell battery for my new Dell. Thankfully, that works well, I can get hours of battery life even when using a reasonably bright screen and wireless.

(Say what you will, I think my Inpiron was a really good buy on my part. This cooling fan issue I've been having strikes me as the sort of thing that could crop up with almost any laptop on the market, and it's not so much that the fan has even actually failed as it's been making noises that have me worried it may fail.)

I agree with Elfen here, it all depends on what you plan on doing with your laptop/notebook.

My current 17" whitebook is basically a desktop substitute.

-2.3 Ghz Pentium Core2Duo
-4GB Ram(not OC'd, which is rare for me)
-2 250 GB HD's
-recently upgraded to a 18x DVD-ROM
-you get the picture

I usually carry it around the house and rarely take it out, so battery life is not really a problem. However, I really liked the Acer 10" netbook I've had for the past four months, thanks to a fat rebate check from Staples that was going to expire. It's basically a barebones laptop with just enough power to get you by, and an envious 9+ hour battery life.

So I'm thinking my next whitebook is going to be a 13" build with portability and battery life as a main cornerstone. I'm gonna miss the full keyboard, but the netbook has weaned me well.

bah. you'd be better off with a butter knife. I've cut myself worse than that with a 4"x6" plexiglass viewing panel, but I wouldn't list it as an effective weapon. additionally, the material strength of a laptop is laughably low... lower than a plexiglass panel, I daresay.

it'd probably be more effective to hit someone in the face with the flat part of the laptop, anyway. at least then there's a little impact and some pieces flying out... and some of those pieces are thin aluminum. might work as annoying, nonlethal shrapnel.

Exactly. Also, when thrown at a full-size shield like many African tribes used, it would "hook" on the edge and go around, hitting the human hiding behind it.

The metal is too flexible to be of proper use. Also getting passed a metal detector would be a bitch with that! And drawing it out in a fight? "Excuse me while I take off my belt...", you'd be laughed it and then beaten to an inch of your life. Worst of all, the belt will be stolen from your writhing body in them thinking its being a moeny belt full of valuables.

Otherwise, it was nice.

Kisk is correct, called Urmi-Payattu,they have long been used, and were often disguised as belts , its the stiffness across the blade that is important rather than along the blade

Chiappa Firearms Rhino revolver, two inch barrel snubnose configuration. Supposedly careful ergonomic design coupled with firing from the lowest rather than the top cylinder gives it highly manageable recoil despite the fact that it's a lightweight weapon firing .357 magnum rounds. Overall length in snubnose form of 164mm (shorter than a lot of J frames despite the barrel length). The hexagonal profile of the cylinder supposedly helps make it more concealable, though given how people say the rounded form of a revolver is more difficult to recognise as a weapon that the flatter form of an automatic, I wonder how well that actually works.

Sure puts a stain on the Italians' reputation for making pretty guns, doesn't it? Laughing Although the name is pretty fitting...

I actually think that looks pretty cool. It's got the barrel set at the lowest chamber opposed to the standard top chamber.

I also like the SVI Tiki, which has a very unconventional design and sight system.

The NI Tank, a Russian WWII-era tank, built off a tractor chassis, manufactured in Odessa in the early days of the German Invasion of the USSR. A number of variants exist, including those armed with a 7.62mm machine gun, 37mm "mountain gun", or 47mm anti-tank gun.

Also, another improvised tank: The Killdozer

Marvin John Heemeyer, welder and an automobile muffler repair shop owner built the "Killdozer", after being angered over the outcome of a zoning dispute, he armored the Komatsu D355A bulldozer with layers of steel and concrete and used it on June 4, 2004, to demolish the town hall, a former judge's home, and other buildings in Granby, Colorado. The rampage ended when the bulldozer became immobilized. After a standoff with law enforcement agencies, Heemeyer committed suicide by gunshot.

Heemeyer took about a year and a half to prepare for his rampage. In notes found by investigators after the incident, Heemeyer wrote: "It's interesting how I never got caught. This was a part-time project over a 1 year time period." Heemeyer was surprised that several men who had visited the shed last autumn did not discover the modified bulldozer, "especially with the 2,000 lb (910 kg). lift fully exposed". "Somehow their vision was clouded", he wrote.
The machine used in the incident was a Komatsu D355A bulldozer[8] fitted with makeshift armor plating covering the cabin, engine and parts of the tracks. In places, the vehicle's armor was over one foot thick, consisting of concrete sandwiched between sheets of steel to make ad-hoc composite armor. This made the machine impervious to small arms fire and resistant to explosives; three external explosions and over 200 rounds of firearm ammunition fired at the bulldozer had no effect on it. National Guard units were placed on standby orders by Governor Bill Owens for possible anti-armor support.
For visibility, the bulldozer was fitted with several video cameras linked to two monitors mounted on the vehicle's dashboard. The cameras were protected on the outside by 3-inch shields of bullet-resistant plastic. Onboard fans and an air conditioner were used to keep Heemeyer cool while driving and compressed air nozzles were fitted to blow dust away from the video cameras. Food, water and life support were present in the almost airtight cabin. Heemeyer had no intention of ever leaving the cabin once he entered; the hatch was permanently sealed. Authorities speculated Heemeyer may have used a homemade crane found in his garage to lower the armor hull over the dozer and himself. "Once he tipped that lid shut, he knew he wasn't getting out", Daly said. Investigators searched the garage where they believe Heemeyer built the vehicle and found cement, armor and steel.
For armament the bulldozer was fitted with a .50 caliber semi-automatic Barrett M82 rifle pointing out to the rear, a semi-auto variant of the FN FNC in front, a .223 Ruger Mini-14 to the right, a 9mm Kel-Tec P-11 semi-auto pistol and a .357 magnum revolver with which he killed himself.
Afterwards, the modified bulldozer came to be known as "Killdozer", although only Heemeyer was killed in the incident.

On June 4, 2004, Heemeyer drove his armored bulldozer through the wall of his former business, the concrete plant, the Town Hall, the office of the local newspaper that editorialized against him, the home of a former judge's widow, and a hardware store owned by another man Heemeyer named in a lawsuit, as well as others. Owners of all the buildings that were damaged had some connection to Heemeyer's disputes.[11]
Heemeyer's rampage resulted in 13 buildings destroyed,[8] resulting in total damages estimated at more than $7 million.[12] The bulldozer also knocked out natural gas service to City Hall and the cement plant, and damaged a truck and part of a utility service center.[13] Despite the great damage to property, no one besides Heemeyer was killed.[1]
According to Grand County commissioner James Newberry, Grand County emergency dispatchers used the reverse 911 emergency system to notify many residents and property owners of the rampage going on in the town.[3] Thus, many people were forewarned and were able to get out of harm's way.[citation needed]

One officer dropped a flash-bang grenade down the bulldozer's exhaust pipe, with no immediate apparent effect. Local and state police, including a SWAT team, walked behind and beside the bulldozer occasionally firing, but the armored bulldozer was impervious to their shots. Attempts to disable the bulldozer's cameras with gunfire failed as the bullets were unable to penetrate the thick 3-inch bullet-resistant plastic. At one point during the rampage, Undersheriff Glenn Trainor managed to climb atop the bulldozer and rode the bulldozer "like a bronc-buster, trying to figure out a way to get a bullet inside the dragon". However, he was eventually forced to jump off to avoid being hit with debris. Further attempts to mount the bulldozer were hampered due to oil that Heemeyer had spread on the vehicle to hinder such attempts.
Two things conspired against Heemeyer as he reduced the Gambles hardware store to rubble. The radiator of the dozer had been damaged and the engine was leaking various fluids, and Gambles had a small basement. The bulldozer's engine failed and Heemeyer dropped one tread into the basement and couldn't get out. The bulldozer became stuck. About a minute later, one of the SWAT team members who had swarmed around the machine reported hearing a single gunshot from inside the sealed cab. Heemeyer had shot himself. The coroner stated that Heemeyer used his .357-caliber handgun in the suicide.
Before this happened, the police department was making a call to a local Army National Guard base, asking for support from one of the base's AH-64 Apache attack helicopters to fire a Hellfire missile at the bulldozer, ensuring the destruction of the vehicle despite collateral damage. The reasoning behind such was the officers believed that Heemeyer would have caused more damage than the missile strike would have had he not been stopped. By the time they were making the call however Heemeyer had already committed suicide.
Heemeyer's body was subsequently removed by police with a crane, though it took twelve hours for them to cut through the hatch with an oxyacetylene cutting torch.

I copied all of this from wikipedia because I figured I couldn't show this image without retelling this epic. Unfortunately, the "Killdozer" was dismantled and scrapped. However, I recommend reviving the idea in the even of (and only in the event of) the inevitable zombie apocalypse! Although I'd reccommend that you, unlike Heemeyer, include an exit to the vehicle in your design.
