Hi from Sydney.

Post by tanyalilac on Thu 6 Aug 2009 - 4:18

[I was so tempted to say "Down Under"... but that would just be crass, right?]

See, this just goes to show the extent of my incredible laziness. Anyhow, this is yet another belated intro post... but yes... I first watched Gunslinger Girl about two years ago (seems like forever) and only just recently picked up the manga. I'm still trying to decide whether or not to watch the second season.

My first attempt didn't go well.

P.S. That banner is absolutely stunning, with its shiny-ness. I can seriously stop and stare at it for five minutes.

Yeah, I'm also a part of the LiveJournal Community for Until Death Do Us Part, so I get updates that way as well. The NSN team are hilarious!

Oh, quick question for anyone- I was wondering if Gunslinger Girl would be considered a seinen as well... I'm not completely familiar with the main characteristics of shounen, but from what I've seen, the humour element seems to be missing most of the time.

It only just occurred to me that your suggestion could very well apply, Tanya, although Boomer's signature is actually a GSG fanfiction-related meme that a group of us came up with one day. A significant number of us are authors whose stories can be found at FF.net's GSG fic archive (practically all the stuff there is by people from here).

You're very welcome for the thanks. Very Happy

I'm actually a hardcore otaku who likes maids more than having three meals in a day and I only read books related to maids. Also, I only visit maid cafes. Of course I also collect maid figurines, I play games which feature maids and it turns me on so much that I'll wear the maid uniforms and jump in joy.

Shounen and Seinen are demographics, so whether a series is one or the other depends on its intended audience. Humor is not required for a series to be shounen. Gunslinger Girl is published in Dengeki Daioh, which is a "shounen" magazine (I would argue not all of its series are shounen), though I think it may have been seinen originally (see here and here for some discussion about the demographic of another series in the magazine, especially note Nihonjoe's comment in the latter one). I personally consider GSG to be a seinen series.

The dreaded question! Hahaha! Okay, can I be a fence-sitter? I like them all, but currently I think it's a tie, between Triela, Claes and Rico... but this is often affected by screen/page time, and the amount of backstory. I'm terrible at choosing whether or not I want sugar or not in my coffee, let alone ten or so cyborgs. Although I have to say, sheepishly, that Beatrice kind of creeps me out. And not in a cool way, like Elsa.

Spoiler:
Oh! Does anyone think that the first gen cyborgs are going to be slowly killed off? It's a depressing thought... since he's already started with Angelica

Ooh.. you have a point with the latter. As for the former, I think it does seem a little unlikely, especially since he's only recently-ish developed her back story (and Hartman's discovery of her) ... and then opened up a new story with the whole Tunisia thing.

^^ Too late... I can never resist spoilers, as damaging as they are. I think I've only read up to chapter 60 - the very, very beginning of the mission.

Spoiler:
I did predict Beatrice's demise, though. Bernardo even says, "A lot of people may end up dead" - and the bubble itself was imposed on a panel featuring just her... so that was easy to spot. I just hadn't realised so many of them would be lost.

I haven't seen the ep, I'm only up to 160 something. *sigh* But I plan on skipping the filler arc between 168-190... because the whole plot thing is just too delicious right now. (I'm also super psyched about the movie)

As for Vampire Knight, I like preeetty much everyone EXCEPT for Zero, Yuuki and Kaname. The triangle is frustrating at times, though at others, I don't mind them as separate characters. When they're all together, not only can you cut the sexual tension with a knife, you're also tempted to shoot yourself in the head. (Aidou, Ichijou and Shiki are favourites... Akatsuki and his unrequited feelings are also very cute)

Oh, I skipped all that filler...No way was I going to watch that many episodes when I knew they had no relevance to the plot. I can't wait for the movie...It's supposed to be released subbed in September, I think. I'm sooo psyched.

I ship Zero and Yuuki. Throw in Kaname and I want to strangle both him and Yuuki. If it's just Zero and Yuuki I usually love it to pieces...no matter what's actually happening. I also get really caught up in the side stories...Akatsuki and Ruka are probably my favorites (just make a move already! Hissy fit ). Besides that...I don't think there's anyone in VK I don't like, besides Kaname...but he can even have his moments. Just not around Yuuki.

Ruka kind of annoys me, actually. If she was with Akatsuki, I wouldn't care as much, mainly because her presence still carries whole "I love Kaname-samaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" connotation which I always found super annoying, especially since Akatsuki's always like "Look at meeeee!". Out of the vampires, I think my favourite pairing would have to be Shiki and Rima. They're so cute!

If Yu kills off Triela, the fandom will go beserk.

I wouldn't be surprised though. Then it'll all end up like 'All Quiet in the Western Front'.

Of the 21 graduates of 1916, 12 dead, 4 missing, 2 in a hospital, and 1 in a madhouse. Two survives.
Next minute the guy who said that got shot. BOOM HEADSHOT! and died.

After that, the agency will be operating like James Bond with their second gens. Sleep with the enemy, find the information, then kill the bastard. Mission accomplished.
