Craziest BFG idea ever...

Post by Piero on Sat 15 Aug 2009 - 0:00

While I've never been able to confirm it from an official source, I have come across stories about experiments being done with Barret M82 rifles converted to fire fully automatic. Supposedly, the things were tried, but didn't catch on because they required extreme measures to compensate for the recoil (one of the possible methods for firing the things required three guys -one to lie prone firing the thing, and the other two to lie prone on either side of him holding the bipod legs. Did I mention that the M82's muzzle brake directs a lot of blast to the side of the weapon?).

Thing is though, SWA cyborgs are super strong, and as such I've been wondering if perhaps a weapon like that might be useful to them for specialist scenarios. Although one wonders if even they could manage such a beast very well... (seriously, the girls are strong, but they only have so much mass to put behind a weapon when firing).

It's a pretty damn crazy idea, but I love the idea of seeing some little girl shooting a .50 full auto from the hip... and of course, I want to stake a claim on having a OC with the craziest BFG out there. Alessia's Kord just doesn't cut it these days... Laughing

So was it going to be belt-fed or something?

I mean it comes with a 10-round magazine as standard, so if it went full-auto, it would need either a belt feed or a large (100+ rounds) drum feed to be of any real effectiveness.

Though one wonders what kind of cycle rate you would get or what modifications might be necessary to allow it to effectively and reliably fire on full automatic. The current spec M2 heavy machine gun has a rate of around 500 rounds per minute. The original planned replacement for the M2 - the XM312 - had a fire rate about half that and was also belt-fed. It's been canceled and has now been replaced by the LW50MG program.

The girls appear to be "heavy" for their size. I have Kara at 100kg, which is about double her weight prior to conversion.

Supposedly, the things had 20 round extended magazines. I didn't get the impression they had any other modifications aside from that and being modified to fire fully automatic (though I wouldn't be very surprised if they ditched the usual high magnification optics).

Might as well just use an M2 or Dushka mounted with a scope, I say...

You only use full auto with something of that caliber to either suppress enemy movement or dismantle a structure and both will require more than 20 rounds fired over a period of one second.

I can see why they dropped the idea, as it's pointless.

If the stories about these things are true, someone in the spec ops community evidently felt it was worth trying. There are plenty of historic machine guns which were fed with twenty round magazines. I imagine the idea was to try to make something portable, since a thirty one pound, fifty seven inch long weapon with a bipod is a lot easier to move move around on foot then a eighty-four pound, sixty five inch long weapon that makes use of a forty four pound tripod for firing. Of course, it doesn't really solve the problem of ammunition weight, and I imagine a M82's barrel would get pretty hot pretty fast when subjected to extensive rapid fire shooting (even if it was in short bursts).

Still, the most extensive write up I've ever come across on the thing (like, two paragraphs in a forum discussion somewhere) specifically listed the recoil as the major issue with the system.

Incidentally, it does remind me a bit of the Russian Kord heavy machine gun and the bipod system it can be equipped with as an alternative to a tripod. Both weapons are equipped with powerful muzzle brakes. The Kord, however, backs that muzzle break up with over twice as much weight as the M82 (sevently one pounds as opposed to thirty one, and it's considerably longer to boot).

The only possible reason I could see using it on full-auto would be to try and hit a target at extreme distances (2000m or more) where you just want a fusillade of lead thrown at them in the hope you'll get one or two fatal hits.

Go for big- a Shoulder mounted Gatling gun with 20 yards of belt fed ammo if your choosing, I would take .50cal!
Or a 30mm anti aircraft cannon with handles in the right places and a trigger to get it started.

If you're going for stuff like that, have a go at 40mm automatic grenade launchers. A few countries produce them (USA, Singapore, Spain etc)

Just imagine. A grenade launcher, fully auto, belt fed. Just imagine
