Allison for MP5:

dA version

Tried something new lighting wise, looking for a sort of flattened, blown out look. You have no idea how much self control I exercised in not giving her some diamond-encrusted, straight topped, 80s style sunglasses.

For those interested, the colour sketch for her design is here

The "flash" efect works very well - the ghosting lights as artefacts from an unsteady hand-held camera in particular are a nice touch, and I think that you've graduated the fading light into the background well too. The one thing that I might criticise would be the white diagonal strip across the car windscreen - there doesn't seem to be any purpose for it, it looks a little odd - but that's really only a niggle.

No, I see what you mean though. I gotta admit that was probably force of habit more than anything else.

Another success Alfisti. I know I'm always saying this, but the way you utilize a large, dark background conveys depth very well. Character wise; contrasting a bright, smiling Allison (sitting under a street-light perhaps, the light seems to be coming from above) with her dark, urban alley surroundings is just how I picture her personality...cheerful, and a bit recklessly aloof to danger.

Cheers Voodoo. Eh, the intention of the lighting was to make it look like someone had set up some pretty solid remote-flash gear infront of her.

Not entirely sure if Monty is or not to be honest... she does have a pretty good knowledge of arts and design though (dangers of hanging around with a former art-fraudster) so probably. That YSL was kind enough to put Mondrian's works into dress format doesn't hurt either

A lot of it though is just that I happen to think that Mondrian's stuff looks cool

Nothing muted or subtle about this one! The bold color palette, the way you've used the short "wall" to separate your characters from the background, and the indifferent bystanders all suggest that there is a story going on here.

The background seems to suggest South-East Asia, or India perhaps?

India was the original intention.

Hehe, the "wall" was actually a result of me not drawing Jethro's legs in the paper sketch That layout though went through a few itterations. At first it was Jethro leaning out of a comic panel, making some comment about "so this is where all the costumed freaks keep getting in", with sounds of a Deadpool battle coming from out of frame. However that screwed the balance of the picture up so...

If you were looking a bit of subtext in the composition, how about it showing that Monty, as a cyborg, has a potential far greater than any common human - she's seen fully while everyone else is bound by a panel edge - but equally that world is a backdrop that she can't interact with. Stronger than people, but set apart from them - simultaeneously greater and lesser, creating that attitude of strange ambivalence which is key to coping with the background and circumstances of the fratelli.

Natural ability and agility + cyborg strength and reflexes mean that Monty's pretty (and with good reason) confident in her parkour prowess...

Playing around with some ideas for a possible pic, having trouble settleing on a pose though. I'm looking for something with a feeling of freedom, flying almost... dancing on air (I think that was the rather good metaphor Robert used).

To get you in an appropriate frame of mind, here's the OP from Shangri-La (great anime by the way):

Anyway, I like poses one and two (or some variation thereof). One I like because it really does feel free and leaves lots of room for funky background perspective. Two however feels a bit more dynamic, and you get to see Monty's face.

Thoughts?

It's good to see Monty break out the free-running skills that are one of her defining features, but because of that I'm not sure that the cap should be part of her outfit. If she's going to diving and leaping and somersaulting all over the place, wouldn't it fly off at the first opportunity?

I dunno, I saw a photo around of a bloke doing the whole parkour gig wearing a cap like that and a set of aviators, so I figured if he could get them to stay on the so could Monty.

Not sure how I inspired a pic suggesting a Bond-style skiing adventure, but if it means new Monty drawings I'll keep doing it.

This is a great usage of her typical arched-back pose. The machine gun looks like a reference to canon chapter 14.

Well... all the talk of Dolomites and Alps after you mentioned your idea for a collaborative project got me stuck on skis and alpine adventures for a few days. These aren't really intended to tie in with that, it was just getting stuff out of my head to clear space as it were. Plus it's winter here and there's only so much I can concentrate on balmy Monaco when it's cold.

As to Monty's machine pistol, I could sort of see the little Skorpion being one of the fratello's "go to" weapons should they need a bit more firepower. It's small, uses the same calibers they use in their pistols, is easy to silence and is resonably easy to source. Add on that, by the very nature of her job, Monty's probably more familiar with eastern bloc/"terrorist" firearms than mainstream western kit...

As a side note: about that arched-back pose. There's nothing really specific to Monty in that... it's just what I default to when I'm not thinking about posing. Plus it shows clothing pretty well. So if I'm not sure where I'm going with a design or something, I'll draw a base outline in that pose then hang clothes off it.

Monty: Great... Tech-Department's been watching Thunderball

dA version

Sketched at uni, coloured at home.

The Tech-Department probably has it's fair share of Bond fanboys/Q-branch wannabes... Which makes me think that Monty's possibly pretty popular down there. Not in the same way that Allison or some of the other mechanically minded cyborgs are, but more in a slightly unobtainable manner. Unfortunately, not being a massive gadget freak, the resident "Bond Girl" isn't well impressed by most of their efforts.

Honestly, they probably should have been trying to push this one on Marisa or Elio... but that thought only occured to me part of the way through colouring

If such a device were actually possible I think it might solve one of Monty's problems during the Monaco casino job.

As far as E&M go...I try to keep their gear limited to what's available in reality. The most advanced piece of breathing gear they use is the same Hammerhead rebreather I own.

Great assortment of techs...they look like they originally intended to impress Monty with their creations, but got distracted and regressed back into showing off to each-other.

Solve her problems it would... but it won't. Like E&M, I try to keep J+M's equipment limited to what's available "off the shelf". Partly because I think it's more fun that way and partly because, in these days of airport x-rays, knives built into attache cases can get you in trouble.

However I don't think that's going to stop the tech mob trying to use Monty to live out their Q-branch fantasies.

I don't know if it's so much they got distracted from trying to impress their very own "Bond Girl", but rather fell into that all-to-easy trap of: "I like it therefore she'll like it."

Monty reminds me of...

Minus when she's rendered in color, Monty reminds me of Haruka from Sailor Moon.

Kara: "Is he...singing?"

Laine: "I think he is."

Marisa: "But it's not raining!"

Jay: "At least he's in tune. You should have heard Avise's rendition of "I Am The Very Model of A Modern Major General" in the shower the other day..." sweat

Seriously, awesome as always.

I can see Jethro doing this to intentionally embarrass Monty.

As for the other cyborgs...

Marisa: Aaaarrrggghhh! I finally get Elio to stop making me watch old musicals and now Mr. Blacker starts with this crap!?

Laine: What's wrong with the twerp?

Kara: She had a bad experience with The Wizard of Oz.

Marisa: Whatever you do; do not let Mr. Blacker teach 'Etta & Rico any of those stupid songs!

Triela: I second that motion!

Oh totally... I imagine Jethro having a more impish and mischevious sense of humor... in some ways it makes a nice counterpoint to Monty's dry-deadpan-ness.

Monty: Yeah, good for you. Try finishing a job only to find him hanging around outside, singing a stupid song.

Jethro: I could sing a serious song.

Monty: Or you could not.

On a related note, something that I recently found out while researching music for Avise - Bersaglieri bands perform whilst running.

Good grief. You need a pretty formidable pair of lungs to keep that up... I'm not sure how long Avise, with his little white sticks, could manage a trombone at the double before running out of puff, which may be why he sticks to the piano and guitar. sweat

Monty: *falls over in fits of laughter.

I'm guessing not quite the spectacle that Avise would prefer... because if I'm honest I found that more hilarious than "military grand."

@Robert Frazer wrote:Good grief. You need a pretty formidable pair of lungs to keep that up...
No kidding, or how you get a decent note out of the instrument for that matter with the constant pounding and jarring.

Upon seeing that I am so glad I joined the Air Force. Nobody ever asked me to do something so ridiculous, and the only time we ever ran is if we heard the beer store was closing early.
I'm not sure how long Avise, with his little white sticks, could manage a trombone at the double before running out of puff
Elio: To be honest, mate, I might actually consider trying to run and play a trombone after smoking a few of those little white sticks.

Priscilla: Different kind of smoke, Mr. A.

Elio: Oh...sorry.

"Miss Marisa?"

"Oh, it's you 'Mancini'. What do you want, you moon-faced assassin of joy?"

"Well, I'd like a hundred press-ups for insubordination for a start."

...minutes later...

"Very good. Now then, Marisa - you can hold your breath for a long time, can't you?"

*Unable to resist the urge to boast of her abilities* "Yeah, by saturating my body I don't have to breathe for up to twenty minutes! Impressive, eh?"

"Indeed, very much so, admirable specialisation. Now, how would you like an opportunity to play the tuba?"

"Wow, really? I've always wanted to give it a try - but Mr. Alboreto never lets me!"

"Well, I've got, let's say, an adventure-training package that he's happy for you to go on. The massed bands of the Army Cadets are holding a tattoo in Rome this week - how do you filling in for one of their members? You'd be performing publicly."

"Really?"

"In front of hundreds of spectators! Maybe thousands!"

"Oooh, count me in! Thanks, Avise!"

*the next day*

"puff... pant... huuuuurrrrrgggghh... pant... Avvissssseeee... I'''''lllll... pant.... kill yooooouuu..."

ART NOT BY ME. CREATED BY dog-food FROM DEVIANTART AND POSTED WITH HIS PERMISSION.

Marisa & Monty get fanart...

This is the textless version... the original can be found on dA

Dog-food has drawn Monty before, but now he's persuing a more realistic style (in a more sci-fi setting). If you're on the site, check out his gallery as I think his work is horribly underappreciated.

There was a minor mixup regards who owned Marisa (I didn't realise he'd decided to draw her as well)... this has since been straightened out.

Oh, and he's taking requests right now.

Yeahhh... I only realised she was pointing it in a somewhat unsafe direction in that second frame (the third she's pointing it off to the left, though it's a bit difficult to see) once the inking was done. At least I can assure you it's unloaded. Sadly probably the only time you'll see her PPK for this entire arc.
