They're going up north... in what is, I think, now their third Audi.

Nice work, Alf. Glad you finished it. Is 'going up north' an expression of some sort?

I was watching Get Carter at the time, in which Michael Caine goes "back up the North", in this case going back up to the north of England.

I strongly suspect that, at this particular moment, Jethro is letting some native northerner slip into his speech on the phone.

To be brutally honest, I'm not entirely certain. Shotguns are not something I know much about, so I looked for reference pics and found something that looked about right and was of British manufacture.  sweat

To be fair, I suspect Monty doesn't care that much: when J+M are scrounging up firearms, so long as it goes bang in the correct direction when they pull the trigger they're pretty happy. I'll take Greener though, it would suit them.

I feel honoured to watch your style mature over the years, friend. Your command of shadow and tone are exemplary, and you've mastered telling a story with merely the eyes.  Keep on growing.

Did MMs really start as quick sketches knocked out to keep your hand in when you had nothing big to post? These are wonderfully done. I'd need forever to duplicate one by any method, even back when I was actually drawing. Thank you for continuing to treat us with these.

Because they are generally monochrome, these have been really good for getting better with light and shadow, even if translating that into colour is taking a little more time. As to storytelling, while I've not posted them here, there are a few characters (the BMW personifications and, especially, young Higgins/MV Arcadia) which have begun to develop their own loose stories. Which is fun, and gives me something other than J+M to draw now that I've also decided to avoid posting stuff of Lettie and her crowd.

@Thescarredman wrote:Did MMs really start as quick sketches knocked out to keep your hand in when you had nothing big to post?
"Quick" is a relative term, each of these can take anywhere from a few hours (for the really simple ones), to the better part of a weekend if I get carried away. sweat

Heh, oddly enough part of the background exercise here was trying to figure out how to do more with less strokes. I'm sill in awe of the likes of Kome or RadoJavor who seem able to create these spectacularly complex backgrounds with a minimum of strokes and blending.

Also, for the record, while I don't particularly get along with Kancolle, I don't think I'll ever get sick of Kome's version.

Pretty much just an update to the old evening gown and necklace design I had for Monty, whilst also tying into a Monday Musing

And, speaking of Monday Musings: most of the time I try to keep J+M out of these things, except when travelling but it's just occurred that I think I completely forgot to throw up these two which got done while I was over in Japan at the end of last/at the start of this year (being on holiday may have had something to do with that)...

So here was New Year in Tokyo:

And skiing in Hakuba (I fell over, a lot, in fact I suspect Monty was quietly horrified at just how poor my showing actually was):

Awesome work, Alfi! You did a pretty good job on those diamonds, notwithstanding. There are so many changes and shifts in the light with real diamonds that replicating them exactly is a tough ask of anyone. Saying that, they're certainly fitting for Monty. I wonder who they're stalking at the Gala? Laughing

Honestly, I've no idea who they're stalking at the Gala...

I do like diamonds on Monty. She rarely wears jewellery but, when she does, its the type that could single-handedly bail out a small third-world nation. That said, actually designing for her can be tricky as it needs to be expensive looking without being ostentatious, sleek and a centre point without being overt. Possibly doesn't hurt that the dress and necklace were intended to be worn together.

I've carried a sketchbook with me everywhere since highschool. Not that its use is always consistent as I only have Friday through Sunday for drawing (Monday to Wed being writing, and Thrus another project I'm helping a friend with), and especially since I've been making an effort to get more practised and comfortable with digital sketching, including for the weekly stuff. Often it sees more use if I'm away, which drove me to start trying to pay more attention to getting the traditional works neater, rather than treating them just as a rough base for digital work.

Glad some movement can be seen though sweat

That could be an... interesting... moment.

Could be waiting awhile for the Lettie fic though: first draft was finished last month, and now I'm staring down the barrel of 12-18months in editing. ^^;

On a different note, one of the reasons it took the month to go from draft to getting properly stuck into editing was that I was working on the picture this was leading up to:

Well, yes and no. I don't really picture them as being part of each others' stories. On the other hand though, there's nothing that would mechanically prevent their sharing the same universe so...

I strongly suspect there are parts of his SIS days Jethro dreads ever needing to introduce Monty to. Not because she's delicate, but because of the levels of disapproval he's going to have to endure. Tarzan's in Hong Kong (6 Degrees - Chapter 04) would be right up there.

Thanks mate. I do still enjoy drawing J+M more than just about anyone else, and I'm probably going to start using them more for "Monday Musings" stuff as it turns out there are still little scenes and stories I want to tell with them.

And yes, boobs practice has proven useful, though there's perhaps some level of irony that the cyborg is the most natural looking thing in there...

Jethro knows when he's in trouble.

That said, he took her for a nice dinner on New Year's...

(That restaurant is excellent by the way).

Weekly sketch today was Monty (again)...

She'll be back in a bit.

She looks beautiful and badass in that Ursula Andress outfit. But what's that around her waist? Surely she doesn't need ballast.

I think I'd need a larger body of (acceptable quality) work first.

And, as TSM noted, currently concentrating on a different type of book. Razz

That said, I did find time to update that old sketch of Odile into my current line/face style:

Heh. Removing Florentino from the pic was a definite improvement. I know she's rather an underdeveloped character in your body of work (pun not intended), but I think she has a lot of potential.

Pair of really amazing pics of Monty, Alfisti. I like the progression in the art style. It's similar to your previous style, especially with color, but with more hard lines to define the characters and objects. Also, limpet mine strapped to her chest. Good thing she's a cyborg, but even then I doubt she'd feel it if something went wrong.

Thanks mate. Yeah, the rendering style hasn't changed much, most of it has been in going back to lines and facial structure.

Oddly enough, that "mine strapped to torso" thing is actually how the early ones were carried (photo of Cecil Clarke of MI(R), who developed the original... on his kitchen bench):

Since I imagine this one has been put together, like the originals, with bits from the supermarket (explosive filler not withstanding)...

'one shot, one kill.' This pic is reminiscent of one of your earliest sketches of her. I remember you remarking, "Not sure what the FRF would be doing with ICBMs..."

I like this though. She just seems so poised and graceful, as if she's walking a catwalk at a fashion show while she drills bad guys. Typical Monty multitasking.

To be honest, Monty's adventures have strayed so far from the original source material, and she interacts with the rest of the SWA so little, that I suspect she barely even counts as a fancharacter anymore (even if, in my head, she is still firmly connected to that universe). I know that, unless there is something GsG specific in the image, I've ceased tagging her pics as being GsG related.  sweat

Thanks mate.

I don’t know what’s going on here, but it must be pretty serious for Monty to even consider working with Raych and Odile.
