You know, reading this thread makes me realize just how bland my fan fiction fratello look. Great art as usual, Alfisti! It's attention to detail like this that adds to the uniqueness of the characters.
Needless to say, I'm going to put more effort into my own peoples.

I think it depends on the character as to how much effort needs to be put into their look.

I mean, personally I like fashion, I find it interesting, fun and I enjoy working up looks. My characters also have some fashion sense and hence the way they look and the clothes they wear are important to their character because it's something they care about. It's something that helps to define them, both to the viewer and, on another level, something they'd use to help define themselves. However, if your characters aren't really interested in fashion then there's probably not as much need to put so much time and effort into the clothes they wear as it's not something important to them.

Put it another way: When it came time to select a perfume for Monty, I decided that what scent she wore would be something important to her and something that she would use to define herself. Hence I put a lot of time and effort into selecting that scent, first on the internet and then eventually spent a few hours in the perfume section of Myer (think like Macy's in the US) trying things out. Practical upshot was that she wound up with something I felt very fitting (Bvlgari Jasmine Noir, for those interested).

However, I have another character (non-GSG) called Jesse... who I've never bothered selecting a perfume for because, honestly, I doubt she'd give a stuff.

Wow, that's amazing. I mean, I get that you're into fashion and hence the extra level of attention, and I really like that.
It's just that I never even thought in terms of what cologne my peoples might have.
(actually I do have another fratello that I came up with before the current ones which I have submitted here, in which the little cyborg SMOTHERS make up on her face thinking it'll make her look more grown up! She's impressed by the gen 2 cyborgs as well as Triela and wants to look like them.) Razz
Still, when I draw clothes for anyone in general, I find myself doing the usual: white shirt and plain pants for the guy, white shirt and plain skirt for the girl with maybe a ruffle here or a stripe there.... ugh.
I gotta spice things up a notch.

There's nothing wrong with the white-shirt/plain skirt combination. Done well it looks fantastic. Monty's "around the house" wear consists of this. It's comfortable and classicaly easy to dress up with a few accessories. On the right girl you can throw a black bra under it an it becomes quite stylishly sexy (one of the advantages of Monty's build and carriage is that she can get away with stuff like that and it's stylish rather than potentially slutty).

As for scents, again it depends on the girl. However, I do think it's important to some. You're going to think differently of someone who wears, say, Kylie Darling...

...which is sort of sweet, fruity and girly (not a fan to be honest, but that's personal preference) to someone who wears Monty's Bvlgari Jasmine Noir...

...(dark, exotic, sensual and mysterious), not to mention the way that they wear it. Does the cyborg (or handler for cologne) use it so that it wears close to the skin (Monty), or do they slather it on so that the scent preceeds them wherever they go? Again it's just another way to portray bits of a character. Or for that matter to play up a handler that doesn't know/doesn't care or a cyborg that's the same.

On a sidenote: weird upshot of the whole affair is that I actually enjoy walking through the perfume section of a department store now.

Well, after a little bit of head-scratching to find something that fitted everything I wanted, I've finally worked out what the bottom half of Monty's "tactical outfit" is:

Riding pants (breeches if you will) cropped and flaired slightly to keep them clear of her ankles and give them a profile similar to this:

(sorry, couldn't find a larger picture that I liked, but you get the idea). In a good stretch fabric they're slim fitting so as to not get caught up on things and flexible enough to allow her a full range of movement. Not to mention that they're sold in some pretty hard wearing fabrics as well.

I guess I figued that Monty would be undertaking some form of physical exertion if she wound up in the "tactical" outfit, so it's cut accordingly.

That said: the outfit's only a general purpose thing intended to fit most conditions, not extrems, so it could be lengthened or shortened or thickened depending on conditions. So if it's colder the pants could be longer or substitue a thick ribbed jumper for the skivvy top. The cap probably gets substituted for a beanie or rolled of balaclava at times... you get the idea. Just think WWII special forces/spy/resistance/theif whatever and that most of her gear is off-the-shelf civillian.

She can borrow a pair of Britney’s riding breeches in she’s interested.

Monty: No. Just no.

Luckily (for me) I don't need to deliberate over clothing details in my prose format to the extent you do in your comic. Still, it's useful to at least visualize what each character is wearing in a given scene in case it impacts the story.

Well Monty has in the past made... adjustments... to at least one of her articles of clothing. And I'm sure the bow could be... removed... or used to perhaps hide some kind of small concealed weapon.

I don't know, I think that the dress is improved by the bow, Alfisti; it makes it look chic. With a single design repeated across a large single sheet, it looks plain (at an extreme, a set of curtains) - the bow counters this by curling in a little serif of personality.

I can see Agapita in that...she'd chose better shoes I'd hazard to guess.

Marisa: I kinda like it too...especially Mr. Awinnell's suggestion about the hidden wire.

Elio: (dismissively) Too expensive.

Marisa: But you haven't even looked at the price tag!

Elio: Lass, if it's in Alfisti's thread it's an original designer dress, hence, too expensive.

I know what you mean, "Not suitable for Monty" does not mean I don't like something... I like the bow too. I just think overall it'd be too girly for Monty's style. Even the dress just by itself... it's all a bit twee (and again, I like twee) for Monty who I imagine wearing clothes with a bit more structure/slink/both.

Professor Voodoo wrote:I can see Agapita in that...she'd chose better shoes I'd hazard to guess.
To be honest I'd written the shoes off as "prop" sweat That said, if you were going to hit the whole ecclectic-vintage-100%-hipster look they'd be fine. Call them "ironic".

To address Elio's concern: I can't remember the site I found it on, but from memory it's genuine vintage... which means I could be picked up in an op-shop cheaply. Elio just needs to learn to thrift.

When it comes to rainy weather I tend to struggle with what sort of hat a cyborg would wear with a trench coat (like Triela's). Fedoras work for men but for fairer sex things are less cut & dry.

Honestly, if you're looking for something to keep water out of the collar you're sort of stuck perhaps some sort of sun-hat or giggle hat variation... both of which, lets be honest here: look a little ridiculous with a trench.

Otherwise I think you're stuck with umbrellas.

Monty of course is known to wear a railroad cap variant with hers...

But it's a fashion accessory and offers zero weather protection.

That's a pretty awesome jacket, Alfisti.

Kara has a couple Burberry trenches, but I have not really given any thought to her headwear. Fortunately, Alfisti has her covered - literally and figuratively. Smile

I think I mentioned it to Voodoo, but in the final panel of J+M (where Monty's pulling out her phone to call Michele) I went to quite a bit of effort to put a Burberry check inside Monty's coat. Unfortunately between post-production and shrinking the image for posting it got lost.

I was quite cut.

She and Jethro can borrow Michele's Holland & Holland Range Rover (H&H shotguns and plenty of Tanq 10 included, of course).

Michele has a Holland & Holland Range Rover? Hmm... didn't realise that.

Jethro + Monty are going to be needed a more upper-class vehicle for an upcoming chapter (I think we had this discussion in chat awhile back)... and of course a Range Rover is good anywhere. May need to ask to borrow that.

Any time. You're also using his Aston Martin DB9 for a story, correct?

Hey Alfisti, what do you think about these assorted pea coats for J Blacker?

Wool classic,

shorter simpler,

lighter, greyish,

bit funky side pockets,

um motorcycle style new wave pea jacket? Puzzled

or basic grey with black shirt?

Maybe one for Monty?

Same story, just part of me can't help but think that the Rangie might be a more appropriate option... seeing as they'll be driving up an Alp, in wintertime.

It may also be though just because it's been a long week and on such occasions I tend to gravitate toward cars more on the "luxury"/"brain out" end of the spectrum. Razz

Come to think of it, there's a distinct probability J+M won't be getting a say in the matter; what would Michele lend them if given the choice?

tremec6speed wrote:Hey Alfisti, what do you think about these assorted pea coats for J Blacker?
I have actually toyed with giving Jethro a pea coat... he does currently have a driving coat which serves a similar role, and a heavy Russian army trench for really harsh conditions. Of the ones you've shown I think the second or third would be closest to the sort of thing he would wear.

Cool, I see that Monty has already a pee coat in her wardrobe. (I kinda knew Mister Blacker wasn't going for the last of the pea coats, Wink I just showed that one for fun)
Anyway, I think I'll have my own handlers Sal use the classic pea coat one and Gunther the grey an black combo every now and then. head bang

I figure it's a good vehicle for him to have since so many super villains seem to have large country estates and like to shoot things.

Also, Laine likes it because she gets to dress up as Lala Ward:

Alfisti wrote:Come to think of it, there's a distinct probability J+M won't be getting a say in the matter; what would Michele lend them if given the choice?

They can have anything they want.

Kara: "Anything but the Veyron Sang Bleu Grand Sport, of course."

Claes: "I recommend the Peugeot 905B."

Laine: "Yeah, French is good."

Michele: ...ugh.

tremec6speed wrote:Hey Alfisti, what do you think about these assorted pea coats for J Blacker?

I like the first one, myself, but I agree the second one works for Jethro.

Very much so. I went to buy shoes, but spent at least half my time window shopping for Monty (Jethro's easy, he wears similar things to me, so that's a non-issue). Walk past window, stop, backup a few paces, spend a couple of minutes noting down elements I like there, rinse, wash, repeat.
