Interesting pair of 'Cat Glasses' that were popular in the 1960s. But that style back then were not so ROUND....

Yeah, pretty much. I kinda like the "round" twist on them though.

Those Cat Glasses seem to be coming back into fashion a bit to, particularly through the hipster crowd.

Jethro is in Chief Lorenzo's office going over next month's mission commitments...

Monty: (stomping into the office angrily) Skipper! Have you seen this!? (waves a sheet of paper) Those boffins at the Medical-Technology department want to take me off the active roster for a whole week! Some rot about overdue maintenance and upgrades!

Jethro: (*sigh*) And I assume you'd rather skip all that?

Monty: Too right!

Lorenzo: I'm glad to hear that. I was hoping to use you on an upcoming mission in the United States. You'll have to pose as a waitress in a 1950's themed restaurant owned by a Padania sympathizer. Do you know how to roller-skate?

Monty: Eh...I'd love to help Chief...but there's this scheduled maintenance that needs to be done, and these upgrades that I've been waiting months for!

Once Monty has gone...

Lorenzo: Told you it would work.

Jethro: You've finally discovered a way to trick Monty into going through with all her maintenance without complaint. Well done!

Lorenzo: That's why I'm the Section Chief.

Lorenzo: That's why I'm the Section Chief.
Jethro: Well, why don't we knut the rest of this out and I'll put a file together tonight for her to look over while she's in.

Lorenzo: That's a little tough isn't it? Most of the handlers take their girls books or music or something entertaining to do when they're down for maintinence.

Jethro: Oh I'll take her some of those too. But I can assure you that if I don't give her something work related to do then two days from now that girl will be climbing walls. She may be off the active roster but our case-load hasn't actually gone down any.

....

No, Monty doesn't enjoy doing paperwork. But once you get into a cycle of being constantly busy it's actually really difficult to break out of it again. Knowing that there's work piling up for her while she's out of action would drive Monty mad.

How to best explain it... umm... this'll do:

I've got a mate from uni who finished the Industrial Design major course the same time I did (except that he graduated whereas I've still got a minor to complete)... and he still doesn't go to bed before 3am. Why? because, in his own words "it always feels like there's something I should be doing."

Yeah... that'd definately be a Monty line... delivered completely deadpan: Ruri Hoshino style.

Also a suprisingly accurate description of them, if viewed through a veil of extreme jaded-cynicism... but which one's which?

I suspect that even if she thinks it's ridiculous for a man to own more shoes than Imelda Marcos, Monty sticks to the common sense advice of "Always be nice to the free-spendng millionaire."

Michele only owns seven pairs.

And before you ask, Kara owns 12.

Does having multiples of the same shoe type/size count as having multiple pairs of shoes?

Since Alpha has a deep fondness for the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star sneaker; he bought as many pairs as he could when he discovered that Converse had plans to close down the factory that manufactured the iconic Chucker. Of course this was before Nike had bought Converse and made the standing order "The Chucker stays".

So he has roughly 50 some odd pairs of the classic black canvas Chuck Taylor sneakers in US size 11.

For the record: Jethro and Monty don't have as many shoes as Michele and Kara.

Jethro & Monty's shoe storage options are not as vast as Michele or Kara's either. One new set of boots might mean leaving the stun grenades behind.

I went a slightly different route in determining what Elio & Marisa should wear. I started with a complicated psychologic profile of Elio (and to a lesser extent, Mari) and then predicted his choices based on that, i.e.; What sort of shoes would a chronicly violent 55 year old recovering opiate addict who grew up financially poor with father-issues chose?

A more illustrative example might be the fact that Alboreto travels to Istanbul to have his suits made...because it's cheaper.

Michele: Whoa...hold on a second! By the time you travel all the way to Turkey haven't you spent just as much as I do for one of my Armani's?

Elio: Probably, but the money I spend is spread out to an airline, a taxi driver, a hotel, the restaurants I visit, and finally my tailor...instead of all going to one designer.

Michele: (faceplam) I give up. You are such a socialist.

Fernando only has about 5 pairs of footwear- including a pair of Oxfords, wingtips, 2 pairs of MC Boots (1 in black, other in beige/tan suade) and a pair of cheap sneakers.

The girls have about 8 pairs, including 3 pairs for dress up, 1 pair of simple MaryJanes (for Rachel), pair of Uggs boots, sneakers, and Kung Fu slippers to walk about the dorm with. They also have 1 pair of MC Boots just incase they have to go riding with their handler.

Nothing exciting here.

Honestly I'm not completely sure, or even thought about in detail, how many pairs of shoes Jethro and Monty have. Off the top of my head I imagine Monty's have a set of (despite what I draw her in sometimes) black-leather dress shoes, a set of Go Go boots, a set of heels and probably some canvas sand-shoes (volleys or something) for parkour.

Jethro? Set of black leather dress shoes and probably a set of deck shoes to dress down with.

I guess they've both used hiking boots as well, but those would be more a "we need them so we'll buy them... then turf them" type job.

Speaking of shoes: definately not for Jethro on Monty's wardrobe...

Men's boots by Givenchy, I think I'll let Deadpool give my thoughts on these ones:

Seriously, I love the "I picked all this stuff up at a fleamarket and turned it into an awesome study in layering" look as much as the next broke design student... I don't need to buy it for thousands of dollars from a designer lable. Some things work best with a name attached, others are best done for yourself. Cool and quirky things generally fall into the latter.

Haha, I tend to focus on the outfits... picked weapons based mostly on personalities and logistical needs... and clothes on the same to be honest. It's probably partly due to doing the ID degree but I tend to view things like clothes and posessions as ways of expressing personality... in fact a lot of my final-year thesis was based on that idea

Besides: these days I like clothes more than guns.

Well I guess this fits into "Apparel".

Today I had some time to kill before my bus arrived and so finally got around to doing something I've been meaning to do for awhile now: go pick a signature scent for Monty.

Story time.

Now, I'm not particularly well versed in perfumes, but I know what I like... and generally it's not what the well-meaning young ladies at the bottom of David Jones' elevators keep handing to me on little cards. I also knew I wanted to avoid the old fallbacks of Chanel No.5 or YSL Opium. However you can't test scent over the internet and I don't really understand perfume lingo (though I'm getting better at it). Which meant going to the shops.

Told the girl there that I was looking for something for "my girlfriend"

Started with something I knew I liked; Ysatis by Givenchy and started making changes from there till we found something that I thought suited Monty:

Jasmin Noir by BVLGARI:

The Eau de Parfum... not the toilet water.

After reading some reviews, here are some words other pepole used to describe it: Sultry, Sexy, Sensual, Exotic, Elegant, Mysterious, Classy... Yeah, that sounds about right.

For my (less-than-informed) part: the jasmine is a bit of a misnomer, because this isn't a floral scent. It is instead distinctly woody and slightly oriental, but without smelling like it belongs on an old lady. That's something that wood scents don't often seem to be able to pull off. The jasmine is there, but it's only very faint. I've got a test-card sitting on the desk next to me that's about 5 hours old now and the jasmine is only now really starting to come through. It's also not particularly heavy or strong either, others describe it as being close to the skin... meaning that when Monty walks into a room people aren't going to smell her before they see her.

It's more subtle and intimate than that. Lets just say it's not a Hillary Duff scent

Anyway, that's enough from me. Here's a short review by someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

LOL! Though totally unrelated, Fernando wears Drakkar Noir... so that would make us fans of the dark (or night).

Not really for Monty... but I still like it. Possibly for 'Etta though... or maybe even Agapita who I seem to remember liked feminine dresses.

That's true.

On the topic of coutoure... one thing that I must severely criticise myself for is that I have absolutely no eye for costumes... it's honestly absolutely terrible. Looking back over my writing I can see that I hardly ever mention clothes unless what someone's wearing serves a specific plot point, and even then it's light on detail and totally generic. I have a guideline - Agapita dresses in a feminine way - but as to what constitutes feminine beyond "skirts not trousers"... Hell if I know. In all this time, I've only ever been able to picture Agapita wearing two sets of clothes. One is the plain-as-vanilla white blouse and short black skirt... the other is the outfit with the shawl, long skirt and beret that you designed for her, Alfisti!

From The Long Weekend;
"No, not confidence – certainty.” Agapita strutted a momentary pose, her long, loose skirt snapping about her shins she did so.
Without going into ponderous detail about what she was wearing you presented a good impression of Agapita's attire here.

Maybe that's true, but by the same token are outfits very important to the story you're trying to tell or how you want to portray the character?

I mean, I tend to focus a lot on outfits, accessories and so on for a couple of reasons. For starters its stuff I like and enjoy working with, however I'm also working in a more visual medium and hence need to know outfit details. It's also a way for me to portray character through that medium. I have less words to play with than you do writing and tools you have to decribe character are not open to me, so I need to find visual ways of achieving the same effect. To be honest, if I was purely writing rather than doing comics I would probably not go much into specifics of clothing etc as long visual descriptions tend to bore me after awhile, I'm more interested in learning about the character's umm... character.

That's one of the reasons that, if I'm working designs for other people I always ask for details of the character's personality rather than a straight phisycal description as that then dictates how I approach each outfit design. So when you see Monty wearing 60s garb, weilding her silenced PPK and with not one hair out of place it's as much a commentary on her personality as it is a physical look. I know many people don't tend to express themselves through how the dress, but I do and hence so do my characters.

That said, if you'd like more designs for Agapita I'm more than happy to take a shot at that too... I've got a fourteen hour plane ride ahead of me and could use something else to do other than watching a bad movie and trying to figure out what I'm going to say as Midget's best man.

I'm always mislaying my memory sticks so something like that could be quite handy... amazing that something that small could give your four gigabytes of space, too. How long is it until we start reaching quantam levels of miniaturisation?

I think we're actually starting to bump that at the moment (reading something, somewhere... could just be faulty memory too) or at least we're reaching the limits of how small we can make circuits, simply by virtue of things being too fine to pass electrons or something.

Yes, electron leakage is starting to become a problem with just silicon. Gallium arsenide will offer more headroom, but it is significantly more expensive.

I believe that is in part why Intel and AMD have gone to multiple cores.

Michele tends to go with auto manufacturer's sets since they take maximum advantage of what boot space there is in the car:

Ferrari 599GTB Luggage Set

Though when they run with something with a larger boot, Kara is partial to Prada's leather trolleys:

You and me both. Sometimes I think we're trying to get too smart with luggage design (or just design in general for that matter). All I want it to do is hold my damn clothes and not get crushed. It doesn't need a thousand pockets and to be made from the same material as the space shuttle to do that.

Gotta love that Samsonite ad.

I gotta admit, I tend to favor soft bags for travelling by car, they squish into places and you can use them to wedge other stuff in.

Back when my dad was still working in oil, amongst his colleagues he was actually defined by his luggage. He would always carry his belongings in an ancient trunk - a real trunk, with hard red inflexible sides and black leather edging stamped in place by brass studs. The thing must be literally eighty or ninety years old. We keep the Christmas decorations in it now.
