I think the reason being is that the med-techs tried to take Elsa's memroy engrams and put them into Henrietta and find out what happened. Once they got enough to explain why in their report, they tried to erase those memories (but failed), and gave Jose and Henrietta a vacation so she would heal with no triggers to wake up Elsa's memories.

That strikes me as a rather extreme step for the medical staff to take.

I prefer the simpler idea that Henrietta and Elsa were similar in age and Henrietta saw in Elsa the same type and strength of feelings she herself had. She knew Lauro did not treat Elsa as nice as Jose treated her so she felt a sort of empathy for Elsa and decided that Elsa would have acted the same way Henrietta would if Jose did not love her like she loved him.

or maybe the Elsa thing can be triggered by all cyborgs when they feel that their handlers don't love them. remember that Henrietta only says "i think i know how Elsa died" after she starts speculating that Joze won't love her. so i guess the same will apply for all the girls except that:

Henrietta: gets smothered by Joze
Triela: pretty much gets the same treatment
Claes: does not have a handler
Rico: is satisfied with Jean just talking to her and giving her orders (im starting to think that maybe they have a S&M thing going on there)
Beatrice: seems to be sattisfied with her handler
And Petra: gets screwed all the time

Elsa looks a good year or two older than Etta to me. I'm also inclined to think Etta's older than Rico, although not by any more than a few months.

Oh, I've always said Etta was a few months older than Rico. But also that they have the same birth year, and that Rico was selected by the SWA first.

Henrietta just strikes me as being younger then Rico (who was 11 when she was converted per her dialogue), probably because she is so much taller.

Then again, who knows. I mean Angelica as a cyborg looks like Triela (13-ish), but in her flashback scenes when she was assaulted she looks like more like 9.

And Claes could be 10 (based on the picture in her file), but she seems older.

I've had to pick hard dates for my OC universe and they match what I think the girls are in the anime and manga based on my best observations, but I admit they're just guesses (except for Rico).

It arrived today.

It's two thin packs in a cardboard box so it takes up about as much space as a normal DVD. It contains the 13 broadcast episodes, therefore do not delete your fansubs of the two OVAs. Wink

The first DVD has the same cover as the Japanese Volume 1 DVD and the second DVD has the cover of the Japanese Volume 5 DVD.

Extras include an interview with Kazuki Yao (Marco's Seiyuu), the TV commercials, textless OP and ED and trailers.

The DVDs have reversible covers, so you can also have the same cover as the Japanese Volume 6 DVD and the cover from the Japanese Volume 3 DVD.

As much as I'd love to buy Il Teatrino, the price Funi has been charging for their, quite frankly sub-par, sets is ridiculous. I'd rather buy a Bandai Anime Legends set, which not only has better packaging (if only slightly) but is also cheaper and features twice as many episodes. I was going to buy Kaze no Stigma part 1 the other day until I saw the price tag. At least with singles, the price was spread out, so I could better afford it. (Plus, I'm a sucker for pretty artboxes.)

Just finished Il Teatrino and... The dub makes a huuuge difference! Funimation sure knows how to pick great voices, choose the right dialogue, and make the characters even better!

For example I loathed Pino for what he did. But watching the dub and hearing Jerry Jewell's amazing acting transform the role into something I never thought posable. I began to like Pino. When I watched the Japanese version I had no sympathy for him and I was happy when he died. When he died this time however I cried.

Since I've watched the fight between Triela and Pino so many times in Japanese (about 50 times... just that scene) watching it in english was kinda weird. But I'll get used to it. ^_^ I just LOVE how Catlian screamed when Triela brought the knife down on Pino's wrist. You really felt Triela's desperation and struggle during that fight a whole lot better in the dub.

All in all I think better of Il Teatrino. It's amazing what a great voice acting company can do!! Run Triela! Run!

That pict is in Vol2-pg:10-7, but if you compare to the Claes you see in the 'present' frames, she is older, and the picture likely was a scrapbook from somewhere before she was taken under the SWA care. She looks 13-14 to me in the present frames.

Those photos in her 201 file almost certainly date from at least a couple years back. Claes' age I'd put at a minimum of 12+ and a maximum of no more than a handful of months over 13. Certainly nowhere near 14.

I consider Claes as late-12 / early-13.

As for -Il Teatrino-, while I normally never watch the dub after first watching the sub, it might make the show more palatable.

In all fairness, after a year and a half of continual negative press from the web mob because of its animation quality Il Teatrino does have something of a presumption of guilt hanging over it and an uphill climb to contend with. Funimation needs to score a clutch of positive reviews to overcome that prejudice, so hopefully the websites and the magazines will come out on the show's side. ANN gave a moderate review of the streamed episodes... maybe they can be persuaded to reassess after the dub.

If they push forward with the story for season three, they really need to get the original art team back to salvage it.

Yeah it has to be the original (Madhouse) or KyoAni.

If it's Shaft, I refuse to watch.

This is a list of their projects.

The stuff I have seen from them include the second Negima series (Negima?!) as well as the OAVs, the two ef series - ~a tale of melodies~ and ~a tale of memories~ and This Ugly and Beautiful World.

Unfortunately, they also appear to have done the first Kino's Journey movie, which immensely lessens my desire to watch it.

They evidently did the animation production for Plastic Little which looked great, but then that was done with traditional (actual) ink-and-paint. It's the new digital ink-and-paint animation that they just totally screw up.

I have Pani Poni Dash! I'm not entierly sure how it relates to their other projects, but they use a lot of different art styles in their jokes, all of them well done. The in-jokes are obvious if you know anything at all about anime, so it's easy to relax and enjoy.

I have to say that it's the first time I've ever heard of paying more for a pre-order than the just-released ones. I should have waited the couple of days and saved the eight bucks.

And yes, the dubs are pretty good, but somehow Franca's voice just doesn't quite fit perfectly. Maybe a bit too cheery whilst sounding a bit older than it should?

If i can't have madhouse back I'll take P.A works, true tears and canaan have shown that they can make their anime look sweet. For the story they just need to follow the manga.

Though I would really find it funny if there was a 3rd season and it had beautiful animation.....and due to the fact it would cover volume 6 through 8 it would be 13 episodes of petra/sandro lol ! Because we all know how much some people here are looking forward to a beatifully animated petra Laughing

I think that the first series of GSG was at its strongest when it actually departed from the manga, particularly in establishing Elsa's background more thoroughly ("but this is where... you gave me life..." is perhaps my favourite single line in the whole series). There are a lot of similar gaps in the story as it stands - other cyborgs we've only seen briefly, main characters referring to events that only happen off-panel (such as Henrietta's kill-count), and even a whole four-month timeskip when Pinnochio's hiding out in the vineyard. Rather than adapt the manga and retread over what I've already read, I think a third series would be better off filling in these blanks and telling original stories.

For me, it is because the anime branched off from the manga is why I choose to mostly omit it from my OC universe.

I agree that it is nice to see "the gaps filled", but they were not filled by Yu Aida. Yu Aida said that Lauro and Elsa were an excellent fratello and that for the most part Lauro ignored her even though she loved him (as did the other girls).

The anime scriptwriters decided to make him an asshole and decided that he joined because he needed money. Frankly, somebody joining just for money strikes me as something an Agency that requires secrecy would not want as a member because that person can be bought and that secret compromised. Also, making Lauro an asshole in a way "excuses" Elsa shooting him, or at least gives her a "reasonable reason" whereas in the manga, the idea of a cyborg shooting her handler is inconceivable and must be due to some type of "error".

And then there is the shootout at the chalet.

...ugh.

I understand the anime scriptwriters needed to both fill episodes and make things "cool". They literally spent a mint on this show (and it shows) and I think a bit of "Michael Bayism" crept into their thinking and writing and at times style took precedence over substance.

Post by Robert Frazer on Mon 17 Aug 2009 - 19:30

Wow, Kiskaloo, I can only say that I've got completely an opposite reading of the adaptations to you.

Now, I'm a very big continuity nut - I delight in the grand scheme of everything being interconnected and dislike retellings and alternate versions for tangling the web (that's part of the reason why I'd like original stories in a third series, it stops muddying the waters of established events). Lauro & Elsa aren't included in that, though, because they were entirely consistent with what Yu had written of them in the manga - they were expanded, not rewritten. Lauro's interest in Elsa only extended to business (which it was), he was indifferent to Elsa's affection (and he was) and it was that unrequitedness which drove Elsa to her murder-suicide (as she did). Lauro would have to be more than a little insensitive to not notice such ardent affection, however good he was at getting practical results, so depicting him as something of a self-absorbed jerk isn't inconsistent, either. It doesn't cancel out the error, it explains why Elsa was in a position where that error could occur in the first place. Things like seeing the actual photograph (such as it was) that was Elsa's only possession also make the dysfunctionality of their relationship that much more vivid.

I think that "Michael Bayism" is a bit too disparaging for the chalet attack as well - it's not as if Angelica rammed through the walls at the wheel of a tank while explosions brought down the entire mountain! I remember that you said in another post a while back that you had an issue with the helicopters being used because it would have given their approach away, but it wasn't a helicopter assault - Triela and Aneglica didn't drop directly onto the roof of the building, they dropped into a forest and then travelled overland to the cliff. The helicopters were to get them into the region quickly, not be part of the attack itself.

My beef with the chalet assault is sending the girls into combat wearing street clothes and shoes. Angelica and Triela rappelling down a mountain in ballet slippers and dress shoes? Henrietta attacking in a seifuku? Puh-leze.

Does anyone know why nobody (least of all the cyborgs) seems to wear body armor in the entire GSG universe?

Wearing them underneath? - Unlikely, since most characters I've seen taking a shot always end up bleeding and needing medical aid.

Not wearing armor to keep up appearances? - Again, you could at least wear textile body armor underneath, but then even in full scale assaults like the aforementioned chalet or the belltower nobody is seen wearing anything resembling armor (OK maybe the GIS guys)

Budget? - Doubtful, seeing as how they can equip them with fancy weaponry.

I mean, yeah, the cyborgs can take a shot, but rifle plates are cheap insurance; they can't be more expensive than repairing or replacing body parts are they?

Their bodies are armored internally using advanced composite armors. Mostly likely their muscles provide natural armoring for at least pistol rounds and then they have composite plates around their rib cages for rifle rounds.

Triela has deflected pistol rounds with her forearms. She's also absorbed knife stabs. Claes was stabbed in the gut with a pocket knife and didn't seem to notice. Triela has been shot in the gut at very close range with an assault rifle and while she felt it, she was still able to continue to fight. Angelica was also shot multiple times in the anime. She crumpled like a house of cards, but still survived in the end.

Eh, my suspension of disbelief can take the strain there. "Little Girls, Big Guns" is the concept that you accept when you sit down to watch, and inherent to that is that pumps and knee-highs go before being togged up like Rainbow Six. Smile

So was skimming through -IL TEATRINO- to get some names and location information, and I noticed that Franco's tracking software uses Google Earth. So when Section 1 captured Franca in Episode 7, it shows they took her to the commune of Trigoria Alta, south of Rome. And sure enough, there are some isolated farmhouses out there. Good

Iím up to ep.8 of Il Teatrino and I have to say, the dubs make a huge difference. Overall itís still inferior to season 1, but the English definitely makes it more palatable.

Iím not sure if this has been mentioned but Jean is voiced by Eric Vale. Eric Vale is also credited as Head Writer (English revision). Are they one and the same, or is it just one hell of a coincidence?

The Japanese, along with the new (crappier) animation, almost made it feel like a different series. Hearing the old familiar voices again really brings it back home. Even the new Hillshire (J. Michael Tatum) is pretty good. When I watched ep.8, it had the same impact on me as it did when I watched it the very first time.

After finishing the English version of Il Teatrino I have to ask an obvious question - Did the Japanese version really suck that bad, or was it a failure on the part of the translators who subbed it? Iíll say it again, I feel like Iíve just watched a completely different series. I canít remember a instance where Iíve seen a sub fall this short.

The dub should be less-accurate to the original Japanese than the sub since the dub scriptwriters need to adjust the words and their cadence to match the lip flaps of the animation so they often are forced to make changes to the dialog.

This is why I almost always watch anime subbed as the translation is more accurate.
