Winchester 1897

Post by SPARTAN 119 on Mon 31 Aug 2009 - 19:14

How common are Winchester Model 1897s these days, the design is over 100 years old and they were last produced in 1957 according to Wikipedia. So, I was wondering how difficult it would be to get a hold of one, like the SWA did for Triela.

Also, why the 1897 rather than a more modern pump action shotgun like the Remington 870 or Mossberg 590, or for that matter, why not a semi auto like the Benelli M3, SPAS-12, or even a selective fire like the USAS 12.

There's quite a few actual Winchesters still floating around, despite production having halted decades ago. Plus, foreign clones of the thing have been made by the thousand.

As for the second part of your post, only Yu can answer that question. Like Claes' VP70, Triela's Winchester was an odd choice, but not a bad one.

I believe Triela has that gun mostly for style/class reasons (Probably just a Yu Aida preference). After all, retro is "cool." Razz

Hillshire wanted to get her something more modern (he was researching the Benelli M4), however Triela said she liked the 1897.

I'm sure there are plenty to be found overseas (in Europe) from their use in at least one, and maybe two, world wars. Given some of the climates regarding gun ownership, such an example would be something that would be found in criminal groups as it would be hard to trace in any way. It does seem like the kind of gun a guy like Mario Bossi would have.

A weapon choice does reflect it's owner, for the most part. Triela holds onto it because it links her to something she desires to know more about, a key to the past if you will.

At a quick search, I found 6 on Gunbroker, most in the $500 range, and in varying shape.

I guess people still like to go "old-school". If you play Modern Warfare 2, you'll see half the players using the Model 1887's.

The Winchester 1887 is a lever-action shotgun. Personally, I tried using it and decided not to after one run through. The reload time is ridiculous and having to cock it is a bit rough especially when your in do or die firefights.

Yeah, I have to agree. Also, it isn't that good these days, since Infinity Ward reduced its range(we're talking about the video game one, right?).

of note is that it can be slamfired as it has no trigger disconnector so she can just hold the trigger down and pump to shoot.
and as its pump you get a bigger range of shells.
numbers made 1,024,700 + copys so parts will be east to get.

From memory Mario was carrying a Winchester when they pulled Triela out in Amsterdam. I think the theory was that she may have inherited that weapon.

Triela carries SiG's. She started with a P230 and then received a P232 as a replacement when Pino disarmed her.

it may be a HK 4 but that makes it under .380ACP or he run dry in assassination mission (i counted 7).
as the german police bought about 12 thousands
HK-4 the odds of him geting one are good
but makarovs are easy to get on the black market as there a lots of them from easten block.

Definitely not a Mak. Though the Mak (and variants) and the Sig are both based on the Walther PPK's frame style, the Maks share the PPK's slide-mounted safety, where as the Sigs mount it on the frame.

Add to this the less-common suppressors for the 9x18 bullet, which is larger in diameter than a 9x19. If I recall my load-charts correctly, the 9x19 fires a .356" bullet and the 9x18 fires a .365" To save on true Mak brass, I've trimmed and fire-formed 9x19 brass to the 9x18 dimentions to work in my friend's PA-63.

9x18 has a bigger round so that in ww3 NATO troops cant use warsaw pact ammo.

the warsaw pact had tons of guns built with suppressors but thay started with the Nagant one of the few revolvers with a gas sealed cylinder.video

then it the PB(Pistolet Besshumnyj - Silenced Pistol)
basicy a Makarov mod to have a two part suppressor

then it get fun(ill put them in odd weapons)

Re: Winchester 1897

Post by Five_X on Sat 17 Apr 2010 - 21:54

The model 1897 is actually a very reliable, efficient shotgun. The Remington 870 and Mossberg 500/590 do have some perks, but the 1897 has a lot of potential, depending on the user. I find it odd that so many people simply keep them as collector's items. In fact, a lot of older guns are better than just showpieces. The Winchester models 1894 and 1897 in particular. Despite being lever-action, I find the 1894 very, very easy to use and quick to reload. Then again, I have quite a bit of experience with it, so that may be the main factor there.

The lack of a trigger disconnector is what got my M1897 confiscated and apparently destroyed by California Public Safety.

It was properly registered, certified, and all that jazz; but apparently the rules changed somehow and the lack of a trigger disconnector in a shotgun somehow makes it an automatic. Damn, I loved slam firing that f--ker at a handful of clays.

Actually now, since the weapon's design is over 100 years old, you should be able to get them as "antique collectors item". At least you can here in NYS/NYC. This is more true of you can get a weapon that old.

In Canada, the 1897 is considered "historically significant", so rules on it are bent. The same goes for the M1 Garand. Even though it holds 8 rounds, it's not a restricted firearm.

The reason the M1 Garand a historical weapon in Canada because it was designed in Canada by John Garand in Canada and manufactured by Winchester. It was also issued to the Canadian Armed forces in World War 2 along with the Winchester M1897 Trench Gun and the Colt manufactured Thompson M1A1.

Despite what ppl say of the M1's limitations, if you really think about it, if you operate within those limits, the M1 Garand Rocks!

One trick with the M1 during war time was to throw an empty clip. The enemy would think you ran out of bullets and charge. Thats when you start shooting them... Evil

Garands are pretty easy to get a hold of two. And they're made in at least three different calibers too.

Several M1897's on Gunbroker. At least one with the barrel shroud. $1000.

Personally, I'm fond of Mosins, but that's only because I can afford them.

In Long Island NY, we have Dr. Garand. A specialty shop just for Garand rifles. A cheap fixer upper there is a minimum $1200. A totally minted out one is $5000. Now if you're into Competition Shooting- a Competition Garand start at $10,000!

I checked Cabela's gun library for the Garand and they're all over $1000. But there is a really nice WW2 commemorative rifle by Springfield Armoury for $2500.

While the Garand was made by a Canadian, Canada didn't actually use it in anywars. We used the Lee-Enfield series, which I call the SMILE gun. Just 'cause.

Its the end of a very sick racist joke from the days when people did not worry about being politically correct. Evil
