The SWA don't have ethics. Why waste time with animal trials when you can go straight to people?

it make sence to use a dog first for most things.
as people care less about them (if it comes to light that you used dog to devlop the limbs some animal rights groups will complan but you can keep going)
you can get animals alot easyer.
you can just put them down when your done with them.
but some thing will need people i.e. fine motor, smell, eyes

The SWA seems to build off of pre-existing advancements in artificial organs and prosthesis which likely were tested on animals and humans through both clinical trials and covert medical experimentation. After all, the medical staff do attend international medical conferences where the discuss at least some of the technologies they use on the girls (like their artificial hearts).

The SWA just merges all these various technologies and systems into the girls to create the cyborgs.

K9 huh?

All jokes aside, I don't know if the SWA would chose a dog-handler to be a cyborg-handler... though by the same token Jean seems to treat Rico like a work dog sometimes. It'd be an interesting pair to write all the same. I mean, giving strict commands and expecting total obedience... however also being very proud/attached to their cyborg. Having met some of the ADG canine section mob out at RAAF Amberley they'd probably be more attached to their cyborg than most of the SWA handlers would be.

Maybe I'm being blinkered here, Kisk, but the impression I got is that the Italian medical system built off the SWA's advancements in artificial organs and prostheses, not the other way around.

At least a few of the medical staff state they joined the covert side of the Agency so they could continue their work (which implies that the general medical community found it either unethical or too risky to fund commercially). We also know that the covert side of the Agency aquires technology from other countries - like the new nanotech skin-bonding technology used on Henrietta purchased from America.

I expect there is a good deal of "cross pollination" between the public and private sides of the SWA. A strong Chinese Wall would keep the work from (and the existence of) the private side secret from the public side, who would just assume the technology came from their own research or foreign sources.

Obedient, loyal and cute. The girls are way better than dogs. Besides, if you're looking for a German Shepherd you've already got one

I wouldn't think the SWA would tend to have much need for a K-9 unit, but if it did, it might make sense to train the girl herself as the dog handler. After all, who expects a little girl walking a dog to actually be be involved with say tracking or bomb sniffing? (Although then again, a girl walking a dog with a parent or someone probably wouldn't seem that suspciious either).

Of course, it gets a little problematic when you consider that sniffing for bombs probably doesn't look a lot like ordinary dog walking. That, and they do already have Beatrice. Though whether Beatrice's nose is actually an SWA alteration or just something she happened to have before hand that was unusual...

I believe she was trained after being the cyborg. Not sure if her handler want this ability or it is a special order from above of them.

The training possibility seems more likely. The cyborg aspect of GSG is more prosthetics and behavior modification drugs. I think we could assue all the girls might have the potential to become sniffers as they all have the same prosthetic nose, but only Bice was properly trained in it's use.

I once came up with the idea for Hillshire to reincarnate as a dog. as the handler is now a mutt, would that count as a K9 team?

Since only Beatrice can do it, and it seems like a useful feature for a cyborg to have, rather then it being granted to her through the cybernetic augmentation, I'm of the opinion that Beatrice had hyperosmia (possibly due to Addison's disease) and they were able to condition her to be able to use that to sniff out explosives.

I lean more towards the training thing for Bea, but the suggestion that her smell thingus was something she already had prior to reconstruction is very interesting, and something I never once considered before.
