Interesting... The story is only two days old, but I'm curious as to why it's not expanding out to the major medias.

okay, I'm curious as to why Fox news isn't carrying something on it. I know why the others aren't- because it would spoil a bit of the panic that Obama will be taking advantage of. If someone seems to have a handle on the situation, it won't seem as dire that we eliminate all off-shore drilling.

I think it's because there's too many people (young and old) who simply like things the way they are and don't want them to change.

Every time someone comes up with something new, somebody else wants nothing to do with it. My personal prime example of this is the discontinued GM EV-1 which in many ways is still more advanced than current electric and hybrid cars in production.

Simply look at the flak Steve Jobs keeps getting, although I admit it's kinda scary that there may be a genuine cult forming around the guy. He may be the next Elvis Presley. Razz

Damn, that reminds me, I still need to get around to watching "Who Killed the Electric Car".

As to Steve Jobs and Apple, lets be fair here: Apple doesn't really do "new" things. Most of what they create is based on technology that's been around for awhile... what Apple is very good at doing is taking that technology and re-packaging it into a form that is both useable, accessible and, since the iPod and iMac; stylish to own. Personally though, I've got no problem with that. From a marketing and useability perspective: there's no point having the technology there if the only people who are capable of using it are techno-nerds and boffins... neither of whom are a massive market segment.

Besides, as anyone who's spent some time doing interaction design can tell you: it's a fucking hard thing to get right.

Yeah, I was like

when I heard it was Austin. Still, the state and city governments are behind it, which makes me think this is going to happen.

And since it's in Austin and not San Antonio, they don't need to worry about werewolves on the track.

Well, Austin is less than 7 hours drive from where I currently live... but god I hope I don't still live here by 2012.
And since it's in Austin and not San Antonio, they don't need to worry about werewolves on the track.
I'm aboard ship right now, and therefore unable to load Youtube videos with this connection...werewolves?

It's about some kids in a San Antonio high school dressing up as werewolves (with fake ears and tails) and howling at the moon. Rather karmic with "The Ungroundable" being on South Park last night. Smile

Well, that's to be expected...he's Ecclestone's favorite for such things. I agree, some of his designs are boring, but the more recent ones have been better. I'm fond of the Istanbul track (maybe I just have an unfair bias because I always had a good time in Turkey).

On the bright side; this means the plan is one step closer to being a reality.

Turn 8 is a gem, I agree. He can usually make at least one decent turn per track, so maybe he can take them all and string them together in Austin to make a track that won't put the spectators to sleep. Smile

if they add some places where its actually possible to overtake, we could see an actual race and not just a procession based on who has the most expensive car !

For the past 2 years that hasn't been the case. Brawn last year & Red Bull this year have had the fastest car while spending much less than the $400 million McLaren, Ferrari & Toyota teams.

Sam Posey had an interesting take on the perceived lack of over-taking in his comments prior to the US broadcast of the Monaco GP.
(paraphrasing) "As the frequency of an action decreases, its value as a commodity increases." Whether you agree with it or not, he certainly has a point worth considering (as Posey always does). We certainly don't want to see F1 become like the American NASCAR series where races and rulebooks are manipulated to improve the "show."

I really dislike Posey as a Color Commentator, but his "Posey's Perspectives" the last few seasons on SPEED's F1 coverage have been great.

I believe the reason Posey does not do full-race commentary anymore is his Parkinson's symptoms.

I did get to meet the man once, spectating at Limerock Park, Conn...didn't talk long but he seemed like a nice guy.

True (stupid) story; While visiting my youngest brother, I explained to my nephews (all 7 or under) how their father had once tried a bungee jump. Bad idea; within minutes they were hanging by their ankles from the tree in the back-yard, using a basic tie-down bungee cord.

Are you implying that she'd be eager to jump straight in using a bedsheet as a 'chute, or that she could probably make a bigger mess with just a few hours of idle time.

In either case the answer is yes.

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 just successfully launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. With the imminent retirement of the Space Shuttle, the Falcon 9 and it's Dragon spacecraft will provide cargo to the ISS through 2016.

They started last year with weekly 60 minute reviews towards the end of the season (so they were about halfway through when Rally Great Britain ended the season).

This year, they now run about a week behind (Rally Portugal coverage starts next Sunday) with a 30 minute preview followed by three 30 minute reviews covering each day of the rally.

Holy thread resurrection, Batman!

Seriously though, for those not up on the latest news in the California Bay Area, a verdict has finally been reached in the Mehserle trial.

Long story short; a white BART police officer shoots and kills a restrained, unarmed black man in the back. The officer claims he was trying to taze the guy, but pulled out his Sig P226 instead.

The jury reached a guilty verdict for involuntary manslaughter just minutes ago which is the lightest charge they could have convicted on, apart from simply acquitting the guy. He could get a maximum of 4 years in prison. There's talks of possible rioting in the Oakland area and though I don't live there anymore, I do have familiy and friends still staying there, so I hope it doesn't come to that.

Crash.net link

Long story short, Roberto Caldroni, a Minister in PM Silvio Berlusconi's cabinet has called for the immediate resignation of Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo following the Scuderia's loss of the World Driver's Championship in the final round...owing to an "insane strategy" that "shamed the country."

I'll need to remember that when Elio and Michele first meet. Wink

And yes, Michele and Kara were at Abu Dhabi in Pactio (though this will be told in flashback when Elio and Michele first meet on the Bright Star).

Visiting Ferrari World is what hooks her on the vehicles of the Scuderia. Then she comes across Clarkson's The Italian Job DVD...

Well, from further discussion about the article it shouldn't affect most businesses as they probably have the monthly business contract with Japan Post. It didn't say anything about UPS/FedEx/DHL so I think its fine. If you bought stuff through a proxy service or through ebay sellers then it's a problem.

Hell buying stuff from Japan these days sucks if you're an American. 78-81 Yen to the Dollar is not fun.

15 December; the last Harrier flight from British soil. Still a very impressive piece of kit, from the BBC News report it looked like they got a big crowd and a proper send-off.

Rachel: You guys seem awfully sentimental about an old airplane.

Fernando: As well you girls might too. The Harrier's played a part in your development.

Marisa: How's that?

Michele: The Harrier was probably the first large scale defense project to utilize carbon fiber laminates.

Elio: Just like the stuff your bones are made of.

Allison: So that means...

Fernando: Yup...your Grandfather was a Jump-Jet.

I'm actually a hardcore otaku who likes maids more than having three meals in a day and I only read books related to maids. Also, I only visit maid cafes. Of course I also collect maid figurines, I play games which feature maids and it turns me on so much that I'll wear the maid uniforms and jump in joy.

No sympathy. Whatever your concerns with the status quo, if there are options short of bringing a weapon to a civil facility, you should utilize them. Trying to get your message across with a gun simply makes you a terrorist. A terrorist with poor aim, at that, thankfully.

May the Harrier enjoy it's retirement. Going the way of the Tomcat.

Growing up during the Cold War, this stuff makes me emotional. LOL

A question... Have you ever been tremendously sad, but the tears won't come out?... That's how I feel right now. My heart is overflowing with tears, but they just won't come out of my eyes. At night, when I'm asleep, they quietly spill out onto the pillow without my noticing.

Notice the failure of the people to react, even after the first two shots. The guy has the gun visible and they're trying to talk him down. Plenty of time to duck after he starts to point it.

I can't say I feel anything for the attempted victims. They're the kind of people who would scream from the rooftops about how safe their gun-free zone makes it for the kids while remaining blissfully ignorant that a law doesn't stop an action, only deters the law-abiding from doing it.

Short and sweet: This is one example why gun-free school zones are a moronic idea at best. Had someone on the board been carrying, it would probably have been over after the first shot from the bad guy.
I know I wouldn't have missed such a fat and stupid target at that range, even under the stress.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Glocks are not the shit. Glocks can fail the same as any other gun. I've seen it personally, and have even heard first-hand accounts of something as basic as a slide-retaining pin snapping, the slide flying off. Get over the obsession and buy what fits your hand, your wallet, and ability.

Aww, all my favorite birds are being retired. We said goodbye to the Caribous and F-111s this year in Australia, went out to Ipswitch for the Pig's final dump-and-burn...

I am so going to miss that.

Australia is retiring the F111 now? The US retired that old bird back after the Persian Gulf War! It was a great bird too, I miss, greatly. And the F14 Tomcat too.

Mav- I doubt that fancy podium the targets sat behind is bullet proof.

So the UK has passed legislation adding the Australian measurement of the schooner (two-thirds of a pint) to the official pub measurement scale for beer (currently the pint and half pint, as I recall). It is hoped that more women will order beer, as they evidently find a pint too much (Cherubino is no doubt scoffing right now) and a half-pint too litle.

Finally, I'll be able to go over there and people will know what I'm talking about! Now if they'd just add the "Pot" (slightly larger than half a pint) we'd be set. Wink

http://www2.wsav.com/news/2011/jan/18/4/savannah-police-investigate-officer-involved-shoot-ar-1355840/

This occurred about 100 meters from my house, in the precinct where I work. I am friends-in-passing with the officer involved, and and DAMNED glad he didn't get hurt. They dug a round out of the plastic spit shield that sits behind his head... another 1/4-inch of penetration, and it would have struck the base of his skull.
