This occurred about 100 meters from my house, in the precinct where I work. I am friends-in-passing with the officer involved, and and DAMNED glad he didn't get hurt. They dug a round out of the plastic spit shield that sits behind his head... another 1/4-inch of penetration, and it would have struck the base of his skull.

I've been told my idea of how to secure the border violates some rights. I'm not sure which ones.

Move the fence in about a hundred yards from the border, and mine both sides for 70 yards. The whole damn thing. Anyone who still wants to cross had best be ready to arrive on the other side in pieces.

Tunnelers would have to deal with graboids.

TOKYO — Japan's massive earthquake caused a power outage that disabled a nuclear reactor's cooling system, triggering evacuation orders for about 3,000 residents as the government declared its first-ever state of emergency at a nuclear plant.

Pressure is rising inside the nuclear reactor, Japanese officials said, after a backup generator also failed and the cooling system was unable to supply water to cool the reactor, though at least one backup cooling system is being used. The reactor core remains hot even after a shutdown.

Japan's nuclear safety agency said that to reduce the pressure, slightly radioactive vapor may be released at the plant near Onahama city, some 170 miles northeast of Tokyo. It added that the vapor would not impact the environment or health.

I don't think we could compare whats going on with the Minatama incident. Minatama disease was a wastewater contamination. This is a vapor issue so it's closer to what happened akin to Three Mile Island back in the 70's.

Evidently one of the buildings at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant collapsed. There are also reports that one of the fuel rods has melted, releasing radioactive Cesium into the air. And there are fears that Fukushima Dai-ichi Unit 1 could suffer a partial meltdown, ala Three Mile Island.

Not sure how the Cesium would escape from a melted fuel rod, assuming the the reactor's vessel is still intact as reported. The blast was a hydrogen explosion from the water they're pumping in to cool it. They're using seawater, according to reports, so they're down to the last resorts, as seawater will make the reactor useless after it's all done.

Lets just hope the wind keeps blowing out to sea.

It worst than Chernobyl meltdown in 1986

It's not there, not by a long shot.
Read the wiki on Chernobyl and you'll see why.
Japan has had one reactor building (not the reactor itself) blow apart because of vented Hydrogen, a byproduct of using water to cool the reactor. The pressure built up and the building exploded. They are venting the Hydrogen from other buildings to prevent this.
Chernobyl was as bad as it was because the actual reactor vessel exploded from pressure after the rods lost all coolant and literally melted down into slag, and a fire started in the pile itself, burning the stuff they used to insulate the rods.
Cesium, Iodine, and everything else associated with a worst-case was literally thrown into the atmosphere, highly irradiated and still burning in some cases. The burning reactor pile was open to the air and vaporizing everything it touched into airborne particles, which the wind carried.

Even if one or two rods have melted in the Jap reactors, they are obviously still contained. Whether you believe the reports or not from them on how much and what kinds of radiation have leaked or not, there have been no deaths attributed to radiation yet, something vastly different from Chernobyl where the people with the worst exposure were dying inside of 48 hours. Others, including most of the firemen, took longer.

This is not Chernobyl by any means, though there is certainly that possibility if things go considerably worse. The news can't tell a meltdown from a patty melt, as they don't know anything about the science behind it, and they have to explain stuff in a viewer friendly way. A few articles have even mentioned that "meltdown" is a generic term now to the layman, and that the reality of the term is still some ways off from the current situation.

Latest reports I have seen show that the seawater is sufficiently cooling the reactors, even though it has now rendered them useless for power generation so they'll need to be replaced.

But Japan has been doing public works projects for the past decade due to the stagnant economy, so writing off these billions and spending billions more to replace them is par for the course.

Short term: A lot of clean-up, demolition, and construction jobs. Lots of imports for materials and equipment.

Maybe their economy will come out of it's slump because of this.

Latest news I am hearing is that another hydrogen explosion happened at Fukushima 1, destroying the roof over the containment structure for Reactor 3 (but not damaging the containment structure, itself). Also, the fuel rods for two reactor piles were partially exposed on Reactors 1 ad 3 and fully exposed on Reactor 2 due to the inability to keep them covered in sea water.

This is why dogs are the best people:

Reporters found a dog loyally standing next and protecting its fellow canine. Better grab a box of tissues before watching.

Transcript can be found here.

Both dogs have been taken to a vets and doing OK so far. More here.

RAF Tornado jets have joined in the operation to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya as the international community swung into action against Muammar Gaddafi.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed Stormshadow missiles were launched from Tornado GR4 fast jets, which flew 3,000 miles from RAF Marham in Norfolk and back.

As part of a co-ordinated strike, a barrage of 112 Tomahawk cruise missiles - some of them British - was also fired at Libya to knock out the dictator's air defence systems at more than 20 coastal locations.

A Royal Navy Trafalgar-class submarine stationed in the Mediterranean took part in the co-ordinated assault, which also involved forces from the US, France, Italy and Canada under the operational control of US Africa Command.

The missiles targeted radar systems and ground-to-air missile sites around the cities of Tripoli and Misrata in what was described as "the first phase of a multi-phase operation", clearing the way for allied planes to take control of the skies. Shortly afterwards, at least three Tornado jets took off from RAF Marham.

The election date has not yet been set, but it looks like Canadians will be going to the polls again soon. A motion was passed today saying that Parliament had lost confidence in the government after a committee had found it to be in contempt of Parliament. The reason for this finding was that the government refused to provide detailed information about the costs of several major initiatives in the budget that the Members of Parliament were supposed to be voting on.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2011/03/25/pol-defeat.html

I would like to note from my extremely biased perspective that yes, the committee that found that was dominated by members of the opposition parties, however the committee voted the government to be in contempt after asking the Speaker of the House about the issue. The Speaker of the house -who was a member of the party that formed the government but whose role was to be impartial- stated that the government "appeared to be in contempt" and basically sent things back to the committee to make the final decision as to whether to recommend that the government be found to be in contempt of Parliament. I think that speaks volumes.

Extremely low levels of radioactive iodine from the tsunami-hit Japanese nuclear plant have been detected in parts of the UK.

A statement from the Health Protection Agency said the "minutest traces of iodine" were being seen in the UK, with low levels detected at monitoring stations in Oxfordshire and Glasgow

That is why I love the Hubble Space Telescope. It has shown the universe is more beautiful then even our wildest imaginative flights of fancy allowed for.

I find it really stupid that so many countries are abandoning the nuclear ship after what's happening in Japan, even though the plants in Japan were remarkably poorly built compared to, for example, the CANDU reactors a number of nations use.

*Sigh* I guess that pushes nuclear fuel as a regular alternative back a decade or so.

I don't think it is a case of the Japanese building poor reactors. I mean I'm not sure even a CANDU plant can handle a 9.0 earthquake and a 10-meter tsunami.

No, the reactor was actually ( http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-03-23/fukushima-engineer-says-he-covered-up-flaw-at-shut-reactor.html ) flawed and never fixed, and other plants in Japan very well may have similar issues. The way that the situation was dealt with was inadequate compared to how many other nuclear plants are built and operated, and because of this those well made reactors are being avoided and shut down. That's just not right.

Yet another reason its great to be an American. Thanks Awinnell.

Seriously, I was surprised by how misshapen the Earth is. Not a perfect sphere, of course, but at least more level than that.

Actually the shapes show variations in gravity, probably caused by the density of the rock underground. The sat is German, the US is showing lower gravity, so you weigh less there than Europe, though the variation is miniscule.

No, you can say it. Its a good thing gravity presses on us less or most of us wouldn't be able to move...
