Yet another reason its great to be an American. Thanks Awinnell.

Seriously, I was surprised by how misshapen the Earth is. Not a perfect sphere, of course, but at least more level than that.

Actually the shapes show variations in gravity, probably caused by the density of the rock underground. The sat is German, the US is showing lower gravity, so you weigh less there than Europe, though the variation is miniscule.

No, you can say it. Its a good thing gravity presses on us less or most of us wouldn't be able to move...

Millions of PlayStation users have been warned their personal information, including credit card details, may have been stolen.

Gamers have been locked out of the network for a week, but owner Sony revealed on Tuesday that the system has been down since it was hacked last Wednesday.

There are three million users in Britain and 70 million worldwide.

Sony said it discovered that between April 17 and 19, there was an "illegal and unauthorised" intrusion of its network and warned users to look out for telephone and email scams. Names, PlayStation log-in details and email addresses are also thought to have been taken by the hackers.

Sony said it had hired an outside security firm to investigate what happened and has taken steps to rebuild its system to provide greater protection for personal information.

PlayStation members are required to submit credit card and personal details to play online games and download software, films and music.

PlayStation Network posted an apology to users through the Sony website saying it would email those who are suspected to be victims of the hacking. It said: "We don't have an exact date to share at this moment as to when we will have the services turned on, but are working day and night to ensure it is as quickly as possible. Please note that we are as upset as you are regarding this attack and are going to proceed aggressively to track down those that are responsible."

The company said it has no direct evidence that credit card information was taken, but said "we cannot rule out the possibility".

Purchase history and credit card billing address information may have been stolen but the intruder did not obtain the three-digit security code on the back of cards, Sony said.

Spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka said the company has not yet received any reports of credit card fraud or abuse as result of the breach.

Just for safety I did the whole change credit card thing (that teaches me for not just sticking to PSN cards like I usally do Doh! ), and swapped out passwords for various stuff.

While it's frustrating that such a large company would have this happen to them and not divulge details quicker, I honestly haven't been raging over it like most people. I took the appropriate measures to reduce risk and now just waiting for PSN to come back online for more Test Drive 2 and NFS:HP Razz

While the blame lays with Sony just as much as the hackers, I find myself more angry at the hackers. I totally agree that Sony should have had better security, but then again if there wasn't any hacking attempts it would all be moot.

Lucretia: I'm confused. Are you all saying that hacking other people's computers is a...a bad thing? But...but that doesn't make any sense; if I'm good enough to hack my way through a firewall, then I have the God-given right to do whatever I want inside the system. If hacking was somehow inherently wrong, then they would have had a strong enough security system to keep me out.

Well, I had a PS3 (still have technically), but two weeks ago it died for some reason (after disassembling it I found out that it maybe the disc reader drive, since everything else apparently is working fine), with this PSN stuff I'm still considering if I will get a new one, fix it or go for a 360. But since I had no real info on my PSN accounts, fake addresses, phones, etc... and never used credit cards to buy things on it preferring the overpriced PSN Cards maybe I'll just stick with it since some games that I have and really like are exclusives.

But I do feel bad for people who have lost something because of this, and for Sony.

His mouth is just another wet hole surrounded by pubic hair.

(The hair on the groin, armpits and in men, the mustache and beards are pubic hairs.)

President Obama said on TV that the US has his body and is treating it as per Muslim Culture.

I hope its done Fillipeano Style- wrap the body in pig skins so the soul can never see the light of heaven at all... But a dirty rat bastard like him going to heaven is very unlikely. May he serve Satan in heating his throne as he burns in hell.

The cynic in me says this was done (by Pakistan, especially) to keep that faucet open by showing it gets "results".

I'm pleased to see that he's finally been put down, but this does raise some concerning questions about the future. I don't really entertain 'reprisals' as a serious threat - the amount of control that bin Laden has had over the organisation in the last few years is questionable, and besides it's not as if the jihadis have needed any excuse to go after their 72 virgins before now. More importantly, how will we react to it? After his irresolute performance in Libya I worry that Barry will be using Osama's death as an excuse to drawdown in Afghanistan. We're finally starting to turn the corner there and to leave the job half-finished after so much because he's getting skittish about his re-election would be a mistake.

Osama Bin Laden is No Hitler. Though they have many of the same qualities, Bin Laden was never a national leader of anything. He was a terrorist and nothing more. Hitler may have started out as a terrorist, but he was become a leader of a nation and turned that nation into a superpower. Bin Laden did nothing of the sort and ever will.

Follow my logic carefully:

1. Obama says Bin Laden has been killed by US forces. He was hiding in a compound, a firefight ensued, and he was shot in the head.
2. Osama's body is in military custody.
3. I'mOKwiththis.jpg
4. An entire nation rejoices and dances together. The man who killed so many innocents is dead. Feelsgoodman.jpg
5. Osama's body is then buried at sea due to "tradition". No documents/photos have been released.
6. wat

If no evidence is made public within the next fortnight or sooner, I'm going to be pissed.

Although I will accept this as 'fact', there are things that are not making sense. "Bin Laden was killed with a double tap to the head." Fine. But unless its done with their USMC MEU (SOC) 1911s, their M16s/M4s burst in a burst of 3. If one shot missed, the other two hit, its not making sense, even if the shooter is a bad shot.

The Burial at Sea is a bit too convient for me. In the past, when we caught somebody (dead or alive) there was a showing off of the body for the press. Nothing like that yet has happened. I better see autopsy pics on Rotten.com!

Finally- the news was showing a burning building (at night) and the reporter was saying "Live- Bin Laden's compound is being burned to the ground..." First off, if it is night where I am, its day over there, so the burning of the building could not be 'LIVE!' Secondly, how could it be that the press got to Bin Laden's house that fast? Pictures on Yahoo does not match the description of the house in the news. (see house here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_exclusive/20110502/pl_yblog_exclusive/the-secret-team-that-killed-bin-laden ) There are no 18ft fences or are there steel structures that I can see on or in the house...

They're just covering up the fact that Vladimir Putin killed him while on holiday with his sheer machismo.

I think classic is the right word... it won't date. Though I think the overall outline was quite plain, the details are fantastic, the texture of the lace running through the top prevents it from being plain to me. The thing that amazed me was how well the train held it structure... someone had put a lot of time into getting that to work and remain the way it should be.

On Bin Laden... I think it's a propaganda windfall for the US. However, in terms of actual overall effect on terrorism and so on I think its impact will be minimal. There's too much momentumn, and I don't think Bin Laden's influence is anywhere near as great as it used to be. Had this happened in the first few years of the "War on Terror" it would have been a hammer blow. But now, to me it's little more than tying up a loose end.

Re: The World News Thread

Post by Awinnell on Thu 5 May 2011 - 6:34

The last known combat veteran of the First World War has died at the age of 110, his family has said.

British-born Claude Stanley Choules, who was known as "Chuckles" by his comrades, joined the Royal Navy aged just 14 and witnessed the scuttling of the German fleet at Scapa Flow in 1919.

He emigrated to Australia in the 1920s and served in the military for 41 years before retiring and publishing his first book at the age of 108.

Mr Choules's family said he passed away on Thursday at a nursing home in the western Australian city of Perth. Following his death, his daughter Daphne Edinger, 84, said: "We all loved him. It's going to be sad to think of him not being here any longer, but that's the way things go."

The father of three was born in Pershore, Worcestershire, on March 3, 1901, six weeks after the death of Queen Victoria, and was one of seven children.

He signed up for naval training in 1915, just one month after his 14th birthday, and at 16 joined the battleship HMS Revenge - part of the British Grand Fleet based at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands. While serving on Revenge he witnessed the surrender of the German fleet at the Firth of Forth, on Scotland's east coast, on November 21, 1918.

Mr Choules, who claimed the secret to a long life was simply to "keep breathing", was also present at Scapa Flow on June 21, 1919 when the Germans scuttled all their warships so they would not fall into British hands.

Frankly speaking, I don't know what difference not releasing them would make. These Islamic fundies are perpetually angry, anyway.

That's Bullshit!
When the stupid extremists kill or wound an American Solider or a NATO Solider, AND they manage to get the body of that solider, that solider would be paraded about the city like some stupid trophy, put on the news and his/her photo shown on the TV News for days to come. I say, they do it to us, we do it to them!

Completely as far as I know...

...what I was more talking about was: what's the Islamic ruling on display of pictures of the dead or of corpses? I know part of the Muslim burial includes enshrouding of the dead quote: "out of respect for their privacy and dignity"...

Does Bin Laden deserve that... probably not. Is there a political move to be made and a moral high-ground to be taken? Absolutely.

Yeah, but their goal is to piss of the entire world. The US on the other hand gets enough bad press across the planet as it is, it doesn't need any extra help.

the burial at sea is to stop his grave becoming a focal point for nutters,so giving them gory pictures that they can splash all over the Muslim world saying " this is what the West will do to your family !" is probably not a good idea

Then don't give the bugger a grave. Stuff him in some secret CIA morgue.

And as for 'this is what the West will do to your family', they don't have to fear unless they're terrorists. Well, are they?

They didn't do that with Uday and Qusay Hussein. I don't understand the apparent double standard.

No, they don't. However it becomes a powerful recruiting tool for the extremists, particularly in those areas that may have limited exposure to a western viewpoint (in the same manner that we are more isolated from the Islamic news media). Suddenly what the crazies have been shouting all the time may be given just a little more weight, and it could well be enough to sway fence-sitters.

People get angry and want to go out and dish out a good arse-kicking when the bodies of dead soliders are paraded around. I imagine usurping Islamic tradition for a political ego boost would have a similar effect... it hits emotional triggers, which means rationality tends to get thrown out the window.

The majority will probably just shrug its shoulders and get on with whatever it was doing, but unfortunately it's the minority that tends to make the most noise.

Trouble is, Pakistan has nukes. Sure the government is filled with epic levels of corruption, nobody doubts that...but if the west doesn't help prop up these crooks and help them hold onto their tenuous grip on power the governemnt might tip in favor of the hard-core right wing fundamentalists.
