NATO Airstrike Said to Kill 7 Afghan Soldiers. Whether it was NATO that killed 'em or not, reports of friendly fire on locals is pretty much the last thing we need over there...

They'll just blame it on PMC's anyway. Ah, memories of Sandline.

Going back to the Ft. Hood shootings, apparently the gunman used a FN 5.7 to commit the murders. A little unfortunate because the 57 already has a pretty tarnished reputation as a cop killer despite the fact that this was probably the only high profile shooting it's ever been involved in, the AP rounds are not commercially available, and its price point puts it out of reach of the garden variety gun-toting thug.

I hope this doesn't pave the way to getting it banned, even though we only get the neutered version here in California, it's still a nice piece.

I hope not, as I would not mind a Five-SeveN and a P90.

Speaking of heavy-hitting ammunition (n this case, 5.56mm NATO), here in Seattle, it appears that the "person of interest" in the assassination of one Seattle police officer and the attempted assassination of another is now an official suspect and appears to have had a long history of anti-police and an assault rifle found at his residence is considered as the probable weapon used in the assassination.

Anyone find it odd that at least one news agency has called the Seattle shooter a 'domestic terrorist', but everyone is toeing around doing the same for the yahoo shouting Allah Akbahl or whatever?

Just an observation.

Would-be ninja impaled in buttocks by metal fence

Seattle police say a man who believed he was a ninja was impaled by a spike when he tried to jump over a metal fence.

At 11:15 last night, a police officer was looking for the victim of a reported assault in the 600 block of Seventh Avenue when she encountered the man impaled on a metal fence and screaming for help. Seattle Fire Department medics were called and removed the man from a fence spike and transported him to nearby Harborview Medical Center.

Officers, believing the man might have been involved in the assault, spoke with him at the hospital. The man said he was not involved. Instead, he said he thought he was a ninja and would be able to leap over the 4- to 5-foot fence.

As a police account of the incident notes, "Clearly he was overconfident in his abilities."

The emergency services are searching homes as residents braced themselves for more rain after England's wettest day on record caused chaos, flooding homes, sweeping away bridges and claiming the life of a policeman.
The "Biblical" downpour over Cumbria was the highest level of rainfall measured in England since records began, forecasters said, with 314mm - more than one foot of rain - falling in 24 hours.

it's a bit wet where i am but not as bad as up north !

Seems to be open season on police officers in the Puget Sound area. One month after a Seattle police officer was assassinated, four police officers in Lakewood (about 50km south of Seattle) were gunned down in a coffee shop and a manhunt is on in Seattle to apprehend the shooter, who was out on bail.

Every time I hear of policemen getting shot I always think of RoboCop. Sigh they don't make movies like they used to any more...

Anyway I never understood why people do stupid things like that. I mean, the bugger is supposed to have a criminal record longer than the Random Media thread. Is it that fun to commit crime? Puzzled

...some people are just plain irrational. mix in hatred, and you've got that kinda shit.

a little bit south of open season on police officers, it's open season on wives, girlfriends and offspring. two murder-suicides in the greater Portland area this week. First a guy in Forest Grove shoots his wife, his kid, and himself to death, then a guy in Hillsboro walks into a salon where his girlfriend works, shoots her repeatedly with a .357, then shoots himself in the head... funny thing about that one: the dude lived through it (so I guess it's a murder-attempted suicide)...

That cop killer supposedly had a 95 year sentence handed down to him at some point in his life. I suck at math, but he's 37 now and if he was in prison even before he was born, he SHOULD still be rotting in jail yet here he is free as a bird. I'm sure they had nothing but the best intentions when they let a repeat offender off the hook; I mean he's bound to do some good in his life, right?

Yeah, this is now Huckabee's "Willie Horton Moment" so any ideas he had for running for the Republican nomination in 2012 are now dead.

A Seattle police officer shot and killed Clemmons this morning. They are now rounding up his family and friends on charges of aiding and abetting a fugitive.

Chile experienced a magnitude 8.8 quake this morning in the same general area of the 9.5 1960 Valdivia earthquake. As with that quake, a tsunami has been generated and is traveling northwest across the Pacific towards Hawai'i, Japan, the Philippines and others. It is expected to reach Hawai'i around 11:00AM local time and there are evacuations in effect (in 1960, 61 people died in Hilo when the tsunami devastated the city).

Jersey City eyes Formula 1 race

Bernie Ecclestone's big dream of a Formula 1 race in New York could be closer to reality than many people thought after plans for an event in Jersey City emerged this week.

A proposal for a race in the 1,200-acre Liberty State Park from 2012 has been put together by the director of tourism for Destination Jersey City - with the possibility of it being turned into a night event.

Organisers want the 'Jersey City' moniker in the name of the race, are seeking a five-year deal and a 3.6-mile track layout has already been sketched out.

Tony George was at the Chinese Grand Prix to talk to Bernie, but evidently not to bring the USGP back to Indianapolis Motor Speedway (of which he no longer has any hard connection with). So perhaps it was to discuss this proposal.

MP5's Allison (a devoted Lancia owner & fan) is surely kicking stones around the compound in frustration today.

With today's victory by Jari-Matti Latvala (and navigator Miikka Antilla) in the Rally New Zealand Ford officially overtakes Lancia for all-time most wins in the history of the World Rally Championship.

Allison: Things would be different if cyborgs were allowed to drive in the WRC.

Brian: Look on the bright side, lass...your team still has a big lead in tally of championships.

It's why I am not a fan of Parliamentary systems. Bad enough with the basket cases like Italy and Israel, but when even the UK has to form a Coalition Government...

To be fair, we rarely have coalition governments in Britain - we use a first-past-the-post system similar to the USA (and the House of Lords is unelected, which helps to simplify matters and spares us a lot of the intractible wrangling you see between Representatives and Senators in Congress, and indeed elsewhere in the world!), and one of the advantages of that is that it almost invariably returns definitive governments. We haven't had a coalition since the National Government during the Second World War, and the last time the winning party was a minority was in 1974. Then, a coalition deal between the Conservatives and the Liberals fell though, and Labour ruled a minority government for a few months before holding another election and being returned with a proper majority. There are a few reasons why this has come about - the current system is fairly biased towards Labour (in 1983, the notorious "suicide note" year for Labour, they polled fewer votes than the Conservatives did during Tony Blair's famous landslide win in 1997, and yet came out with more seats than the Tories would do!) so Conservatives have to work a lot harder to win anyway; also the Tory leader David Cameron is coming under fire for a flaccid campaign which underperformed against a lame-duck government that it should have been easy to administer a coup-de-grace to.

I dislike coalitions for precisely the basket-case reasons that you mention, Kiskaloo... and future prospects for Britain there are problematic. The Liberal Democrats, who the Conservatives are now trying to woo (the LibDems actually lost seats in this election, but despite doing worse and completely failing to materialise the bigger poll surge they were hyping up after our TV leader debates they're still ending up as kingmakers. It feels indecent), hold electoral reform to a PR system to be a chief agenda of theirs...

Walkers can use a footpath around the holiday home of TV star Jeremy Clarkson, a public inquiry has ruled.
The BBC Top Gear presenter closed off a section of the coastal path near his lighthouse property on the Isle of Man to protect his privacy.
He complained that some ramblers were peering into his kitchen window and taking photographs.
His decision to prevent access on part of the path along the Langness peninsula in 2005 provoked immediate opposition from pressure group Public Rights Of Way Langness (Prowl) and a public inquiry was ordered.
Prowl argued that walkers had followed the route for generations and it met legal requirements that it was used by the public without interruption for at least 21 years but lawyers for Clarkson countered there were no rights of access and that walkers had only been allowed by permission of the landowner.
Clarkson's wife, Frances, told the inquiry that a small number of walkers were also abusive towards their family because of her husband's public profile and she reportedly said they would sell their luxury hideaway home if the inquiry ruled in favour of the access campaigners.

It's a reference to the comic version. The movie version was terrible, and altered 'purity' to 'unity'.

I wasn't too excited about it at first, but the film has kind of grown on me. I'm not much of an action fan, so the gun & dagger shit kind of bored me, but the rest of the movie was like a modern day 1984. Natalie Portman did a great job.

Maybe it's a political thing; you either love it or you hate it.

As a stand alone movie, it wasn't bad for a Unholy Trinity movie. However; as a bonafide comic adaptation, it falls flat on it's face. I've already posted my thoughts on the film adaptation's of Alan Moore's works so I won't say them again.

Personally though I think it's a shame that Alan Moore had to wait till 2009 for a proper film adaptation to one of his timeless stories.

Kevin Costner to Clean Up Gulf Oil Spill...

...uhh, what?

Via Core77

Core77 wrote:
This has to be the weirdest thing we've blogged all month: In a
story that's been decades in the making, it turns out movie star Kevin
Costner may be cleaning up BP's disastrous oil spill in the Gulf.

Not by himself, of course. After the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill off the
coast of Alaska, Costner (along with scientist brother Dan) developed
"Ocean Therapy," a massive shipborne device that cleans oil from
seawater through a huge centrifuge. Something like a large vacuum
cleaner, the largest Ocean Therapy device can suck in 200 gallons a
minute and eject seawater that's 97% clean.

Over the years Costner has sunk $26 million of his own money into
the Ocean Therapy device, developing some 300 of them, all of which
have sat largely dormant until now. But BP, pressed for solutions, has
agreed to test six of the devices.

In 2007, [Costner] told London's Daily Mail that he had
blown millions on "technologies I thought would help the world" and had
nothing to show for it. "I've lost $40 million-plus," he said. "But I
knew that if I was right, it would change things in an incredibly
positive way." Last week, he was in Louisiana seeking redemption,
demonstrating his Ocean Therapy contraption. "I'm just really happy
that the light of day has come to this," Costner said.

Interesting... The story is only two days old, but I'm curious as to why it's not expanding out to the major medias.

okay, I'm curious as to why Fox news isn't carrying something on it. I know why the others aren't- because it would spoil a bit of the panic that Obama will be taking advantage of. If someone seems to have a handle on the situation, it won't seem as dire that we eliminate all off-shore drilling.

I think it's because there's too many people (young and old) who simply like things the way they are and don't want them to change.

Every time someone comes up with something new, somebody else wants nothing to do with it. My personal prime example of this is the discontinued GM EV-1 which in many ways is still more advanced than current electric and hybrid cars in production.

Simply look at the flak Steve Jobs keeps getting, although I admit it's kinda scary that there may be a genuine cult forming around the guy. He may be the next Elvis Presley. Razz

Damn, that reminds me, I still need to get around to watching "Who Killed the Electric Car".

As to Steve Jobs and Apple, lets be fair here: Apple doesn't really do "new" things. Most of what they create is based on technology that's been around for awhile... what Apple is very good at doing is taking that technology and re-packaging it into a form that is both useable, accessible and, since the iPod and iMac; stylish to own. Personally though, I've got no problem with that. From a marketing and useability perspective: there's no point having the technology there if the only people who are capable of using it are techno-nerds and boffins... neither of whom are a massive market segment.

Besides, as anyone who's spent some time doing interaction design can tell you: it's a fucking hard thing to get right.

Yeah, I was like

when I heard it was Austin. Still, the state and city governments are behind it, which makes me think this is going to happen.

And since it's in Austin and not San Antonio, they don't need to worry about werewolves on the track.

Well, Austin is less than 7 hours drive from where I currently live... but god I hope I don't still live here by 2012.
And since it's in Austin and not San Antonio, they don't need to worry about werewolves on the track.
I'm aboard ship right now, and therefore unable to load Youtube videos with this connection...werewolves?

It's about some kids in a San Antonio high school dressing up as werewolves (with fake ears and tails) and howling at the moon. Rather karmic with "The Ungroundable" being on South Park last night. Smile
