I've sometimes wondered what might happen if, say, the CIA managed to place in the hands of the Taliban a quantity of doctored explosive that, instead of exploding, just burns like hell. Imagine recruitment might go down after the first couple times a fellow hits the button and becomes a screaming human torch.

The 20-year-old Lance Corporal in the Coldstream Guards fired at the trigger of a suicide bomber, whose device then exploded, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The incident took place in southern Afghanistan in December.

It has only now been made public.

Paying tribute to the unnamed soldier, Lt Col Richard Slack said the sniper likely prevented a major attack by the Taliban. A second suicide vest containing 20kg of explosives was found nearby.

Describing the incident, Lt Col Slack recalled: "The [bomber] was wearing a vest. He was identified by the sniper moving down a tree line and coming up over a ditch. He had a shawl on. It rose up and the sniper saw he had a machine gun.

"They were in contact and he was moving to a firing position. The sniper engaged him and the guy exploded. There was a pause on the radio and the sniper said: 'I think I've just shot a suicide bomber'. The rest of them were killed in the blast."

to bring this thread full circle,
BBC wrote:A soldier shot dead three colleagues and injured 16 others at the US Army's Fort Hood base in Texas before killing himself, the military says.
US media named the suspect as Ivan Lopez, 34, although his identity has not been officially confirmed.
The gunman had served in Iraq and had mental health problems, officials said.
President Barack Obama said he was "heartbroken" over the attack. A gun rampage at the same base in 2009 left 13 soldiers dead and 32 wounded.
Maj Nidal Hasan was sentenced to death for that attack.

A close friend of mine was shot yesterday there. Just came back from deployment. What kind of repayment is that. Serve 3 tours in Afghanistan, then come back to get shot by your own people.

Luckily, he's quite alright. You know them tankers. You can't kill em no matter how hard you try.

Tomorrow, we will remember the heroism of thousands who stormed the beaches of Normandy, France to liberate a continent from state institutionalized oppression.

Today, I remember a single man who stood up to another form of state institutionalized oppression.

In a nutshell, one of my neighbors hosted someone who later turned out to be the senior son of a member of the Politburo. The two of us had gotten along extremely well so I was invited to do a term at Peking University (at the time I was doing post-gradudate work at the University of Washington's Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies) as a thank you from his father.

(Malay Articles)

US airforce decide o challenge our airforce yesterday in a friendly exercise

It's state of the art F-22 Raptor versus soviet old MIG-29 Fulcrum owned by the Malaysian Royal Airforce.

Intentionally, the F-22 was set to practice alongside SU-30mkm, the newest fighter asset of the Malaysian airforce... however the Raptor's mockup dogfight with Fulcrum is the one that caught most attention

The result ends up in a draw; despite what happened is kept under secrecy, a rumors spread among the flyboys that

"Hard to lock onto the Fulcrum"

Flight hour of most RMAF pilots are lower compared to USAF pilots, yet...

28deg/sec instantaneous turn rate for Mig-29 is a painful and troublesome for most aircraft to achieve lock and this is proven in "Cope Taufan" exercise.

The F-22 isn't the greatest dog fighter, but then it doesn't have to be because in a real-life engagement, the Malay planes would have been lit up hundreds of kilometers out by E-3 Sentry AWACS and the Raptor's would have engaged them well beyond visual range with AIM-120 Scorpions.

The Malay's first indication there was an opposing force would be when their lead elements suddenly exploded in mid-air.

This is true. Many more factors denote into how things preform in combat.

US Aerial Combat doctrine is almost unchanged since Vietnam. Detect the enemy before they detect you. Lock on with long range missiles and take them out before they reach you, a asset or anything else.

I mean the F-4 Phantom, a great fighter and dogfighter, wasn't meant to go head to head in tight turning combat and go all "guns, guns, guns" on MiGs. It was designed to use missiles and only missiles to combat opponents. Long range detection, fire and kill. Done. They only added guns when that didn't work out as well, but the idea was solid and is used today...though now fighters are all equipped with miniguns just in case.

Right which is why they have a flight of F-22s or F-16s or [insert plane designation here] to protect it. AWACS picks up enemy, Enemy heads to AWACS, AWACS turns and runs while escorts engage enemy at distance before closing to finish off.

Now, I'll note here, I'm not defending the F-22. I'm just explaining why F-22 does what F-22 does.

we (RMAF) don't even have AWACS to begin with, and Malaysia going to a war without being attacked first are not going to happen....and the exercise are meant to train our flyboys so that they could improve their dogfight skills so it could be on par with other Asian fighter pilots such as those Japan F-15J flyboys

and the last time our MIG is used extensively was last year on this same month, when they bombard the Sulu terrorist to extinction (assisted by Royal artierlly division and the naval bombardment from Royal Malaysian navy frigate with their tiny Otobreda 76mm cannon)

Also ID and I were debating (slightly) via G+

Figured I'd add it in...

Spoiler:

Il Direttore: ID
PolosElite23: Me

ID:
*waves arms*
Then what was the point of the thrust vectoring?
The F-22 isn't a bad fighter, don't get me wrong.

Me:
*shrugs* This has to do with going back to the F-4 Phantom
You need to have a fighter able to handle itself in a close quarters engagement/dogfight if the current doctrine fails.
While the main objective of US combat doctrine is to kill the enemy at long distances and with effective missile kill. The F-4 Phantom, designed exactly for that, showed the weakness.
The F-4 didn't have guns, and when they had to fligh close and personal with MiGs, F-4s were lost due to the fact they couldn't use guns.
So they tossed Guns on it
Now combat doctrine is that: A) kill enemy within detection range at max distance to avoid possible casualty
B ) be able to effectively combat enemies who get in to close.

ID:
Sure
But that's not what gets argued
And honestly
Getting a high missile kill rate at long range seems quite dubious with radar-based missile systems

Me:
Hence Radar Intercept Officer

ID:
That's not what a RIO does
Also the F22 doesn't have a RIO
It's single seat

Me:
*nodnod*
PolosElite23 was being general

ID:
I... guess?
I mean, that doesn't solve the issue that having a RIO does nothing to ensure missile kill
It just makes it easier to manage missile lock, various signals, etc.

Me:
Well yeah.
You understand how Radar guided missiles work

ID:
Of course

Me:
Mini computer controlling rocket and all that

ID:
The problem being that this is a projectile that's going at Mach 3
Against a target that's 15 seconds transit time even at that speed
Which is plenty of time to pick up a radar lock (radar travels at the speed of light)
And take evasivs
*evasives

Me:
Most of the time though, reaction time
You ever watched a show called "Dogfights"?

ID:
In which case your kills are from missiles rather than fighter quality, in which case why dump money into fighter jets?

Me:
Ah! there comes good questioN!
Now say your enemy pilot does just what you said. He evades
Guess what, now he knows where you are
He's going to close, probably fire his own missiles and move to engage
at this point, you're going to need to dogfight

ID:
Ah, but the argument you forward earlier is that it's okay that the F-22 pulled a draw with the MiG-29, since the F-22 is supposed to be nuking the MiG from 50 miles out.
So now we have two contradictory statements.
Which is true?

Me:
Mmmm, I wouldn't say that
I mean that in most cases, the F-22 is going to engage and kill its targets at distance
Now regardless of plane, it comes down to pilot skill if that fails.
Let's face it, a F-4 Phantom Vs. F-16 Fighting Falcon. The Falcon has a less experienced and talanted crew.
Now, would you agree the F-4 is not as...advanced as the F-16?
The answer should be yes.
But if the F-4's pilots play the fighter to its strengths and minimize its weaknesses and use superior flying. It doesn't matter that its older, because they will out fly their enemy
I'd say a draw is okay, because in the end, despite advanced debate, it can come down to skill

Edit: Kinda helps Neko's point as well.

Would you like fries with those donuts?

Burger King Merges with Tim Hortons

The U.S.-based restaurant chain made it official Tuesday announcing that it agreed to merge with the Canada-based Tim Hortons restaurant chain. The deal, worth about $11 billion, will create the world's third largest quick service restaurant company with about $23 billion in sales and more than 18,000 restaurants in 100 countries.

The new base in Canada could allow Burger King (BKW) to reduce its U.S. tax bill -- a recent report by KPMG found that total tax costs in Canada are about 46% lower than in the U.S. These so-called inversions allow companies to transfer money earned outside the U.S. to the parent company without paying additional U.S. taxes.

Surprisingly enough (at least to me), it sounds like Tim Hortons and the Canadian Government were the ones pushing the deal.

Of course.

Despite the Canadian Dollar just barely edging out the US Dollar currently; it may(and is almost certain to) not be that way in the near future. Especially with the American addiction to quick meals at affordable prices.

This is a win-win for both sides. The Canada-based Tim Hortons is most certainly to get a huge influx of operating capital(in US dollars no less) and will get it at a huge US tax break.

While US-based Burger King gets a reprieve from a few policies that are stifling the growth of many American businesses. As a result, Burger King gets to pour more of their revenue into operating and investment capital giving them a small, but very strong competitive position against the juggernaut likes of McDonald's, KFC, Wendy's, et al.

My only question is...What did Brazil-based 3G Capital get out of the deal?

When I saw that story, I had to read the headline twice. I'm not against children shooting per se, but an uzi?

I'm assuming she fired it on automatic and the recoil took it.

Exactly that. I'm around guns a lot, I know kids who shoot.

Apparently not putting a sub-machine gun that adults can have trouble handling into the hands of a 9 year old isn't common sense...

Unless she's a cyborg, but still... Sad

What I find funniest about that image is that she's being suicidal when she should have clearly seen the cause of the problem without needing to turn the gun at all.

I do wonder how someone can have perfect trigger discipline, yet be so clueless as to look down the barrel.

It's evidently a broad-spectrum DDoS attack against the more popular fansubbing groups and the aggregate link sites like Nyaa and TokyoToshokan. TokyoToshokan is up via IP6 and the fansubber sites are doing their own recovery projects.

I only fansub one show this season, but it is also my favorite show of the season - Encouragement of Climb, Season 2.

Fortunately, Doki has their own tracker so I was able to pull it down. head bang

Post by Officer_Charon on Sun 21 Sep 2014 - 15:44

http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/18/us/savannah-georgia-police-shooting/

We had an officer-involved shooting here on Thursday. The first I heard about it (Thursday is my Sunday, so I was taking a class on sex crimes investigations) was my sergeant from the riot team calling me.

"Charon, we're mobilized. Get your shit and get over to the staging area."
"... Are you serious? *grabbing binders, coffee mugs, biography I'd been reading and scurrying for the door*"
"Shooting on the west side. Crowd's getting ugly."
"... On my way."

So after amping up a bunch of cadets by screaming out of the training center lights and siren, I get to the staging area, load up on crowd-control grenades... and sit and wait.

Thankfully, the folks in Savannah are, by and large, fairly level-headed when it came to this. Local religious leaders kept the crowds from getting too ridiculous. They had a couple protest marches to the nearest precinct to the incident (almost literally around the corner), held signs and chanted, but made their statement without it getting ugly. There were a handful of folks who were trying to agitate further, but were generally told to sit down and grow up by the folks in charge.

Then we hear that Al Sharpton (and presumably Jesse Jackson) are supposed to be coming in, because it was a white officer, and a black suspect. They can't be bothered to come out for the WAVE of shootings that we've been having that have been black on black, but they magically appear for this?

Ignoring the fact that, by accounts from officers who were there (and according to the GBI's initial investigation), the suspect had a pistol in his possession that he'd aimed at the officer, these folks are going to continue to agitate for a while. Allegedly, we have several New Black Panthers going around to various restaurants in the city and causing scenes after they receive "bad service."

The fun part's going to come when the officer is cleared by the investigation.

Black-on-black shootings don't bubble to the surface if they're both civvies.  If one of them was a uniform, then it would have a better chance.  Uniformed white-on-black is guaranteed to spill onto the network's news shows (as opposed to local affiliates) because it plays into the stereotype/archetype/prejudice of prejudice.  Yes, it's prejudice, but in reverse: if you're going to prejudge someone, even if that person is a cop, yes, that's prejudice.

If they have witness (or, better yet, footage) of the deader waving a pistol around and its line of fire coming anywhere near a person, that's a justified shooting in my eyes.  The officer should be cleared.

If they can't find the weapon, or witness testimony or video evidence contradicts the officers' respective accounting of the incident, then there's going to be 'the fun part.'

However, I do believe there are bad apples in uniform.  They make life miserable for the vast majority of LEOs who put their lives on the line every day, unrecognized and unthanked.

It's not been a good week for the commercial space industry.

On Tuesday, an unmanned Antares rocket carrying supplies to the International Space Station suffered an engine failure on launch and exploded on the pad, causing extreme damage.

And today, Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo suffered an in-flight anomaly that resulted in a complete hull loss and the death of one crew member and the severe injury to the second.

Well the thuglets have indeed gone berserk as the city of Ferguson is currently on fire as I watch BBC News.

Looks like much of the US didn't agree with the decision, either, with (peaceful) protests in many major cities.

Late, but the US Senate Committee on Intelligence has released a redacted executive summary of its report into the CIA's Enhanced Interrogation Techniques here. Whenever I read things like this, I'm always aware of just how open the US is about it's 'secret' services and, secondly, wonder just what else they've done that's in the 'too dangerous to release' pile.

The UK still has files from a almost a century ago locked away underneath Whitehall.

That won't help you, as the NSA has developed the capability to remote-modify your HDDs/SSDs firmware so even a deep-level sector-level format will still leave you open once you re-install an OS.
