Not to mention it's much easier to explain the presence of USB cufflinks that you can probably buy from Think Geek in your luggage than it is, say, a camera with a geiger counter in it.

Or hey, follow the prime tenet of design - if you can't hide it, make it a feature.
Feeling a little silly now for not thinking of that. Wink

At some point I plan to introduce to my SWA "universe" the great debate; Did Pizza originate in Italy or America?

Advocates of the pro-American side can point out that tomatoes are a New World plant...pro-Italian forces cite texts that refer to the dish as far back as Etruscan times. This of course leads to hours of debate amongst the international SWA staff.

Fernando: You should ask me for one. Hell, the super cluster I have in my dorm just went up to 29 laptop units. I'll give you one just to keep the CPU core at an even number. What is it? These are rare never released to the public Dual Core G5 processor Powerbooks and iBooks. I'll gave you a PowerBook, since its metal case is nearly indestructable.

Elio: Never released?

Fernando: These were experimental units made by Apple when they thought the IBM G6 CPU core was going to come out but it didn't, not on time at least. Then at the last minute they went with Intel (BOOO!!!). *sigh* True 128/256Bit core CPUs running at 2.8GHz on a laptop. You will never get anything like this on an Intel system. Never.

Elio: I dont know what to say...

Fernando: Just enjoy.

Elio: (handing it to Marisa) But why do you have so many laptops?

Fernando: Its to process so much data, the SWA System would choke if it got a load of what I'm processing.

Marisa: Hey! There's all the 3D Shoot'em Ups in Here! And They All Connect to 'Elfen's Wonderland' Server!

And how would Elio use such a piece of equipment?

Elio: Why the hell isn't this thing printing? This is the default printer...it's online...why the hell isn't it printing? (thumps monitor out of frustration)

Sounds like Monty has an evil plan afoot...

As far as computers are concerned in the real world; I've been kept awake for days straight struggling with recalcitrant aircraft computers, sonar systems and underwater acoustics but over the years nothing has vexed me more than getting printers to communicate reliably. I've just passed along my real-world difficulties to poor Elio.

Elio: Oh, thanks a lot...bastard.

Jethro: Umm, Alboreto, you've told me Marisa is a lot better at working with computers than you are. Why don't you just have her help with the paperwork? I mean, with Monty around I barely have to lift a pen...she does it all.

Elio: *sigh* I tried. Marisa actually finished the work I gave her...but it took twice as long as if I'd just done it myself and Public Safety was not amused by drawings of Godzilla in all the margins.

Ferro: Mr. A? I know this is probably harder for forge, but I cannot accept a stickfigure Godzilla as your signature. Especially when it's in different poses for each required line.

In Jethro's defence, though he rarely has to deal with day-to-day paperwork, he's kept plenty busy with other aspects of the job.

FanTAStic.

Although, I must confess... you have now piqued my interest in learning about baccarat. The only thing I really know about it is from a skit that I caught on Comedy Central, once upon a time, by a comedian whose name I didn't catch.

I wanted to try it when in Vegas (to quote Monty, I wanted to "get my Bond on"), but with the minimums to be had, it wasn't worth dropping a Benjamin just to say I'd done it.

So I had a nice dinner at the Bellagio, instead. Smile

Baccarat is similar to 21, aka Black Jack. Instead of 21, its up to 11 and in certain instances you can split your cards into 2 or more hands and you could (house rules dependant) throw out bad cards. The main thing is to get 11 in the fewest numbers of cards possible (2 cards) in the fewest moves. There are many rules in Baccarat so it gets confusing.

I was reading the comic when Cyborg Central went down last night (around 2AM EST), and was still down when I left at 4AM. It was great! Really! Even at this slow poke modem speed!

Considering that Baccarat is traditionally a big-money game... I don't blame you.

Cheers Elfen.

I do however think that you might have your games mixed up, either that or Chemin de Fer is even more different to the British/American variant of Baccarat than I originally realised. Here's my understanding of the game (as explained by the internet and Ian Flemming).

The aim of the game is to get a score of 9, once you hit 10 the counter resets... so a card value of 13 would equal a score of 3. Hence 10 and face cards are also worth zero. The worst possible score of course is one of zero... Baccarat. The best is a "natural" or a score of nine off your first two cards.

As I was mid-way through explaining when the forum went down, in Chemin de Fer (litterally "road of iron"... reffering to the iron shoe originally used) the bank roams between the players rather than being held by the casino (which provides facilites, a croupier and holds the money. It then takes a small percentage of each stake... often bets are taken on who will win the game from the spectators as well, providing an additional income stream). The bank moves on when it looses or that player decides to pass it. It should also be noted that the player playing as the bank cannot withdraw their stake, so the bank gets larger each time it wins. Should the player not loose (and hence also loose the pot) but decide to pass the bank on they will withdraw their chips and whoever accepts the bank puts out the same amount.

The game is played between the bank and one of the punters at the table, who accepts the game by calling "banco". Should no-one be willing or able to match to match the bank's stake, players may form a conglomerate, represented by the player in that group with the largest stake. Should the players win, their winnings are distributed also as a percentage of the original stake they put forward...

Spoiler:
This is possibly where Bruscher first twigged that something was up, where Jethro bet Monty rather than forming a group of punters.

The bank deals four cards face down alternately, two to the punter and two to itself. Should either punter or bank possess a "natural" (9) or "small natural" (8) they will declare it and, should the other party not be able to match it the game is over and a new round begins. Should neither have a 9 or an 8, they may decide whether to stand or take another card. The Punter gets first choice, giving the bank a slight advantage as they can guage the punter's response. Protocol (the next abnormality in Jethro's game) dictates that if you have a score of 4 or less that you take another card. If you have a score of 6 or above you stand. If you have five, it's your choice. Should either punter or bank decide to take another card it is dealt face up, again advantage bank as they play second. After that, the scores are revealed and the game starts over. Should the bank win the punter's stake is added to the pot. Should the punter win they take the pot and the bank is offered to the next player (passing to the right from memory).

So, that's the rough and dirty version of how to play Baccarat Chemin de Fer. I hope it wasn't too confusing because it took me ages to get my head around it sweat

For the record: both Jethro and Monty know how to play Chemin de Fer, and are quite good at it. Unforutnately sometimes you need to take a gamble on a less than perfect opportunity rather than risk not getting one at all... and trust the cyborg to take care of herself.

Heh, seriously: remind me never again to try to draw out a card game in detail as part of a comic... seriously. There's just not enough space to show how the game works AND the players' moves. At least, not unless you're willing to devote, like four whole chapters to it (Ian Fleming... I'm looking at you here).

Seriously though, I bashed that out over my lunch break... I think by the time I got halfway through I think I was writing "Baccarat for Rookies" rather than trying to explain to you.

Best of luck with that... perhaps you can find someone who can give clearer instructions rather than trying to piece it together from fragments on the internet and reading Casino Royale (which was Punto Banco anyway... just to make life difficult). There's more information around on the variant of Baccarat played in Vegas and more generally across the globe, but info for Chemin de Fer seems to be a little thin on the ground... difficult because it's also probably the most complex variant to boot.

Cheers mate.

I'll be honest: I'm of two minds as to how I want to run the last chapter... everything hitting the fan would probably be more exciting, bur for those not as familiar with J+M as the mob on this forum everything going smoothly would be a better character intro. Perhaps I can find a middle ground. That said, I think the (was going to say "vast" but somehow I think my readership is anything but) majority of people who read are part of this forum anyway so... who knows.

In the words of the great John 'Hannibal' Smith, "I love it when a plan comes together". I don't think that it necessarily lacks drama to have an operation to be carried off successfully and to timetable, taking any hitches in their stride - while there's less adrenal excitement, the delight of partaking in their smart, slick, smooth style to slip past all defences is no less satisfying.

Chapter 4
Page 0
Even if you were unfamiliar with the story up to this point the mood comes right across. The low ceiling is almost oppressive and really conveys fatigue.
Page 1-3
That is one hell of a picture window! It's a great contrast in setting & mood from the title page.
This portion of the job must be particularly difficult for Monty; trusting others to get their part right with little or no communication...vexing to her inner control-freak.
Page 4
I recognize that downward looking shot of Monty from one of your "promo" works. Her run is a highlight of this chapter and I know I've said this before but I really enjoy the dramatic light & color palette shifts from scene to scene.
Page 5
Clever use of the sunglasses; at first glance (while I was downloading each page...before I'd read the text) I believed that Monty had this planned from the moment she & Kara picked them up, but page 3 seems to contradict that angle.
Another highlight is the first panel...Monty is visibly smaller & shorter than Eric but her facial expression is so strong that there's no doubt as to who is in charge.
Page 6
Love how the first few frames are small, setting up the grand entrance to the casino (and yet another new color palette...I like the purple). The light fixtures are terrific...where did you get the idea for those ceiling chandeliers?
Page 7-9
I can see why it was so difficult to draw the baccarat sequence...it's loaded with subtle character movements and background detail. The middle panels on page 9 (with characters split between panels) are a great trick, implying a "camera pan" and passage of time.
Monty certainly is hanging off Jethro here...
Page 10-13
"Sometimes a little much for her own good." I imagine every handler has said that at one point or another.
Great character design (particularly the grey haired guy with the curling handlebar moustache) and imagery (the chips, wristwatch & lemon peel in "Vesper's" martini) throughout.
Last panel; when Shaun stakes Vesper I was half expecting some extra in the background to naïvely whisper "I thought she was his niece?"
Page 14-16
The audience is of course aware that this is all a set-up but the facial expressions you've drawn are still wonderfully convincing. Jethro's intensity in 14.4...his frustration at losing, contrasted with Monty's rigid stoicism (as well as the blonde punter's nosy fascination) on page 15...and Monty's grim face in the last panel of page 16 are all subtle & terrific wordless storytelling.
Page 17
Not much I can say about this page except that it's interesting set up for what's about to happen...which I admit you genuinely surprised me with.
Page 18
So Bruscher is onto her. I love the tense moment where the audience knows both of them are going for their pistols...that's the first appearance for Monty's since Ebanovich knocked it out of her hands in the prologue, right?
Page 19
Monty wasting a martini? Seems almost out of character for her!
Although it's a bit uncouth for this story I've always been fond of the idea of the character following through...not only tossing a drink in the opponent's eyes but smashing the rim into his face.
The bending comic text (Thack! Swishhh followed by the hard vertical Wham!!) is a really clever way of implying the action that has happened without showing all of it.
Page 20
Even after being beaten decisively Bruscher still wears a defiant expression...I wouldn't mind seeing this character come back for another appearance (although it might make more real-world sense to let Marisa feed the fish with him).

This begs the question; how are they going to get such a large man out of the hotel un-noticed? I guess that's a question for the next chapter...looking forward to it!

Re: Jethro + Monty, Finally in Action

First up, as always: cheers for the feedback.

@Professor Voodoo wrote:This portion of the job must be particularly difficult for Monty; trusting others to get their part right with little or no communication...vexing to her inner control-freak.
Pretty much, it's not really a role she's suited too. That said: Monty's probably slightly less concerned about the crew of crooks (bar Jax, but the others experienced hands, brought in on reccomendation of some one Jethro trusts) than she would be if it was down to other cyborgs (whom she consideres to be, well... a bunch of children). How E&M and M&K fit into all of that... at a guess, while Kara and Marisa may not be Monty's favorite cyborgs, Elio and Michele (both of whom Monty holds in slighly higher esteem than the average) are there to keep them in line. Not to mention that both fratelli are playing to their strengths... Marisa's diving and Kara's eating expensive food, wearing expensive clothes and so on Razz

That's not to say she's not concerned... just less concerned than she feasibly could be if it were, say, Henrietta.

Her run is a highlight of this chapter
I'll admit, at times I find it difficult to work Monty's parkour into things as it often happens "off camera" as it were (see their stopover in Paris on the way to Monaco). It was nice to be able to show it a little.

Clever use of the sunglasses; at first glance (while I was downloading each page...before I'd read the text) I believed that Monty had this planned from the moment she & Kara picked them up, but page 3 seems to contradict that angle.
No, the sunglasses are just something she grabbed in the hope of shutting Kara up for a bit.

Monty certainly is hanging off Jethro here...
Well, she is his "niece". The other reason of is the presence of Mary Christmas. Even Monty isn't immune to the odd bout of cyborg jealousy, and her actions are sort of her way of stating "this one's mine".

particularly the grey haired guy with the curling handlebar moustache
I'll admit it: I had a blast drawing that bloke.

For there record, the watch is Jethro's and the martini is simply called a "Vesper" or "Vesper Martini"... invented by Ian Flemming and named for Vesper Lynd.

So Bruscher is onto her. I love the tense moment where the audience knows both of them are going for their pistols...that's the first appearance for Monty's since Ebanovich knocked it out of her hands in the prologue, right?
Yeah, some of Jethro's odder moves at the Baccarat table would have tipped him off. I think I've mentioned it before, but I prefer my badguys (insofar as Bruscher happens to be on the other side at this particular moment) to be bright and switched on: you don't afterall get to be able to bandy around millions of Euro on a regular basis by being stupid... and he's a bit old to be a trust-fund kid.

The PPK has been out once since Ebanovich, but it was for a cleaning and general maitinence. Monty may not be a "gun" person... but she does believe in keeping your equipment well maintained and in good working order.

Hmm, yes and no. Monty enjoys a drink, but at the end of the day she's not overly attached to it. Context matters and the job comes first. Now if she'd been sat down with a rare free half hour to enjoy a drink and it got somehow knocked over... she may be a little miffed. That said, I did originally have her making mention that it was a shame to waste a good Vesper, but it was too many words for her so I cut it.

As for smashing the glass on Bruscher, I think she's a little too far back for it. All she really needs is a distraction so she can get in close enough to disarm him. I actually walked through her movements myself to make sure it all flowed neatly together. However, once it got on paper it didn't flow so well, hence the text running through the frames.

Even after being beaten decisively Bruscher still wears a defiant expression...I wouldn't mind seeing this character come back for another appearance (although it might make more real-world sense to let Marisa feed the fish with him).

This begs the question; how are they going to get such a large man out of the hotel un-noticed?
It's not much of a spoiler to say that Bruscher will survive this one. In J+M's line of work, dead bodies often run the risk of creating more trouble than they solve. People get antsy if you rob them, moreso if you leave corpses... as do the police. Since they're not operating within Italy's borders the government can't just quietly stop questions being asked... especially since J+M aren't really supposed to be there or even exist in the first place. The Monaco authorities are already going to be taking a serious interest, kill Brushcer and the British (place of residence) are likely to get involved as well as the police from whatever his home country is.

That's another reason not to have Monty glass his face either... that'd be a very visible injury. At the moment any stories he tells of being beaten up by a 5'4" underage prostitute (if he even wants to admit to that) are going to seem a little far fetched, the glassing would add weight to anything he said. Since they're outside Italy as well, word of the cyborgs is probably pretty thin on the ground.

As to whether he'll be back in the future? Who knows...

Anyway, glad you enjoyed it and thanks again for the feedback.

Ugh, forgot to answer this one...

Regards the two "chandeliers" over the high roller tables: there are a few lighting designs that use a similar concept of bundling a bunch of lights together, though normally its just exposed bulbs. I just upped the scale with larger end fixtures and a wider ceiling footprint for the start of the wires. As for the hanging globes, there are again a number of designs like that. A mate recently installed them in his apartment... personally I think they look awesome, particularly hung from a high ceiling and with a display globe inside (one with a long, interesting fillament).

I like the angle and the position Monty is in. She looks braced for battle, plus you can't really see who (or what) she is looking at and that's a good tease since she appears ready to act.
As usual, 2 thumbs up! Good Good
By the way, seeing Elfenmagix's comix again makes me wish you'd make some
moar Elfen!! I miss those. Smile

Well now... this certainly does feel a mite odd.

ISSUE|05

Now available.

In this issue:

- Coffee causes drowsiness.
- Monty goes swimming.
- and Jethro, that totally hoopy frood, knows where his towel is.

Special thanks and apologies have to go to Professor Voodoo for what I'm sure will be an inevitable host of dive-related errors... despite his best efforts to put me on the right track Also thanks to him and Kiskaloo for the loan of their fratelli.

Anyway, Issue05 marks the end of the Monaco Arc... and the end of the Jethro + Monty comic for the forseeable future. Unforutnately I simply no longer have the time to put it out at the standard and rate that I feel it deserves or that I'd be happy with. J+M's story will continue however, just in prose form.

Lets see how that goes.

My soundtrack to the heist was Simon & Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade of Winter".

It's been quite a ride, Alfisti, and thanks for taking us on it. The tale is certainly a gem in the crown of the whole GSG community and you can be proud of it.

Totally appropriate.

Cheers all. Hopefully the continuation will now be able to build successfully on what has gone before and not just become a mess of poor writing.
