I like the angle and the position Monty is in. She looks braced for battle, plus you can't really see who (or what) she is looking at and that's a good tease since she appears ready to act.
As usual, 2 thumbs up! Good Good
By the way, seeing Elfenmagix's comix again makes me wish you'd make some

Well now... this certainly does feel a mite odd.

ISSUE|05

Now available.

In this issue:

- Coffee causes drowsiness.
- Monty goes swimming.
- and Jethro, that totally hoopy frood, knows where his towel is.

Special thanks and apologies have to go to Professor Voodoo for what I'm sure will be an inevitable host of dive-related errors... despite his best efforts to put me on the right track Also thanks to him and Kiskaloo for the loan of their fratelli.

Anyway, Issue05 marks the end of the Monaco Arc... and the end of the Jethro + Monty comic for the forseeable future. Unforutnately I simply no longer have the time to put it out at the standard and rate that I feel it deserves or that I'd be happy with. J+M's story will continue however, just in prose form.

Lets see how that goes.

My soundtrack to the heist was Simon & Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade of Winter".

It's been quite a ride, Alfisti, and thanks for taking us on it. The tale is certainly a gem in the crown of the whole GSG community and you can be proud of it.

Totally appropriate.

Cheers all. Hopefully the continuation will now be able to build successfully on what has gone before and not just become a mess of poor writing.

An exciting conclusion to the arc. In spite of your warnings I saw no glaring issues with the underwater action (you sounded almost as if you hoped I'd see some technical error).

More detailed thoughts to come but in summary; another great success. I know this was a massive undertaking which we may not see again for a long time but I for one hope this is not the last time you work in the comic medium.

I think it was more a case of being pessemistic about my chances of getting it right... better to be pre-emptive. Razz

I hope to work again in the comic medium as well. Whether it'll be for J+M though... who knows. I'll admit, as much as I love and enjoy writing them, I do consider them something of a trial run... characters to learn on.

Monty: Oh thank you very much.

I think by now there's a line of characters waiting for a shot to appear in Wraith11 comic form. With the addition of Mary Christmas and her background in the SRR, I would love to see Allison and Brian (who is former SAS) work together with her as liaisons. But that's just wishful thinking...

Trust me when I say that "Mary" is probably the last person the Italian Government would want to know about it's terror-tots program. Or if not the last then definately up there in the last 5%.

Re: Jethro + Monty, Finally in Action

Post by Professor Voodoo on Thu 4 Aug 2011 - 7:13

Well, it took me nearly two weeks but finally, some more complete thoughts...
Page 5-00 thru 02
Only thing I'm wondering here is how they've dealt with the unconscious Bruscher. Did they remove him in a second box or just leave him trussed up in the room?
Page 03
Hmmm...is that Mary Christmas in the lobby? I half expected her to become involved and throw a monkey wrench into the works. Nice underwater lighting effects.
Page 04-05
Ah, the now-famous "spandex shot" makes its appearance. Monty dodging the lasers gives her a chance to strut her stuff in a way usually reserved for the more combat geared cyborgs (most recently Rico in canon ch. 86) I get the impression that you had fun planning out those six gymnastic poses.
Page 06
Monty's cringe and then annoyed scowl is the highlight here...Jax'es elation at his success providing humorous counter-point. One thing I'm not clear on; why did Monty bring the orange sunglasses along...I thought they were just a ruse to provide explanation for how she could see the infrared lasers?
Page 07
Yet another spandex shot...providing a little fanservice, Monique?
What stands out here is how the 3 parties involved are arranged on the page...Joss & Eric up top in the hotel, Monty beneath them in the vault, Elio & Marisa down below...mirroring their actual locations and providing a real sense that this is all going on simultaneously.
Page 08-09
Is that the famous tunnel under the Fairmont Hotel? Nicely done. Monty's sour expression as she is drenched is also terrific.

Earlier you questioned the accuracy your diving scenes, but you've even got the pressure calculations right. 5 meters of salt water would indeed add 7.3psi or about half an atmosphere.
Page 10-11
I see you ditched the idea of Monty carrying a "Spare Air" can. Marisa's arrival is appropriately comical, she's smiling as if everyone was having just as much fun as she is. Nice underwater effects again, particularly Monty's hair and her clearing the mask.

Monty's regulator looks like an Aqualung Mistral...even when choosing SCUBA gear this girl goes for the retro look!
Page 12
Okay, the only hang-ups I could find in the underwater scene is that Monty is using double tanks and has no spare regulator. Doubles are kind of overkill in such a shallow situation (although they do look much cooler in a Bond-esque sort of way).

In the dark third panel I see Monty pausing with Elio...are they just exchanging bags or is he giving her a quick check to ensure she's gotten all her gear on right (which would be very in-character for Elio)?

The flares are very cool...
Page 13
Kara looks good with her hair tied back...I like what you've done with both she & Michele here. Elio's head looks a little odd however...he might have done with a bit more beard to elongate the face in relation to his neck.
Page 14-15
So the cool retro regulator and double tanks get ditched at the bottom of the harbor. The decision to have her slowly climb the rocks rather than scramble up parkour-style is good...even a cyborg would be tired after all she's done tonight.
The towel move is classic Jethro. He doesn't get much "screen time" in this chapter.
Page 16-18
The clothing choices are a little confusing here...Monty & Jethro looking like they're bundled up for a brisk autumn, everyone else in decidedly breezier summer attire.
Interesting that Kara has already taken a look at the recovered hard drive (enough of a look to know about the encryption). Her hat is a cute touch by the way.

Finally; you really get a sense of Bright Star's size here. Impressive, Michele.
Page 19-20
You successfully made me go back to chapter 4 to check Mary's business card for clues.A bad end it seems for Nick & Shamus...and the set-up for the next arc. Looking forward to it, no matter what format you chose!

Professor Voodoo wrote:Only thing I'm wondering here is how they've dealt with the unconscious Bruscher. Did they remove him in a second box or just leave him trussed up in the room?
He got left trussed up in the room... I don't think they should be too concerned about him as I doubt he'll be wanting to explain to police how he wound up in a room with a case full off... something, a firearm chambered for a round illegal for civillian carry in many European countries and a girl barely a quarter of his own age. Not to mention the total lack of fingerprints in the place (destroyed by the dry chemical extinguisher Joss is firing into the room. The powder is slightly corrosive.)

Professor Voodoo wrote:Hmmm...is that Mary Christmas in the lobby? I half expected her to become involved and throw a monkey wrench into the works. Nice underwater lighting effects.
Yeah, that's Mary... meant more as a reminder to the reader that she's there and sort of keeping an eye on things, for reasons known only to her and her controllers. Not to mention set up for the last part of the issue.

Professor Voodoo wrote:Ah, the now-famous "spandex shot" makes its appearance. I think I may have pulled something working those poses out, but yes, it was fun. It seemed only fair to let Monty have a chance to show off before the issue completed and remind people that she is indeed a multi-million-euro piece of technology.

Professor Voodoo wrote: One thing I'm not clear on; why did Monty bring the orange sunglasses along...I thought they were just a ruse to provide explanation for how she could see the infrared lasers?
Well the glasses were first a way to shut Kara up, then indeed a ruse to explain away her ability to see into the infrared... and I kinda want them to get used again in a later chapter just for giggles. As to a practical in-story reason: I think it's a case of just not leaving evidence behind that can lead back to J+M, eventually someone will plug and drain that vault. The glasses were bought in Monaco around the time of the robbery and glasses frames often have a frame-number stamped on the inside. A savvy detective could perhaps use that to trace back to Michele's Amex.

Professor Voodoo wrote:Is that the famous tunnel under the Fairmont Hotel? Nicely done. Monty's sour expression as she is drenched is also terrific.
Yes it is, though to be honest it was more just down to provenance rather than any good planning that let that happen. I needed a location that would be close to the water, near the Fairmont, out of the way but not an unusual place to see a person standing, for Jethro to drop glowsticks on E&M from.

Professor Voodoo wrote:I see you ditched the idea of Monty carrying a "Spare Air" can. Marisa's arrival is appropriately comical, she's smiling as if everyone was having just as much fun as she is. Nice underwater effects again, particularly Monty's hair and her clearing the mask.
Yeah, the Spare Air can went, it just wasn't as much fun as the rising water motif... Glad you liked Mari's arrival: I figured she'd be enjoying herself, and completely oblivious to blinding her colleague with her headlamps.

Professor Voodoo wrote:Monty's regulator looks like an Aqualung Mistral...even when choosing SCUBA gear this girl goes for the retro look!
Professor Voodoo wrote:Okay, the only hang-ups I could find in the underwater scene is that Monty is using double tanks and has no spare regulator. Doubles are kind of overkill in such a shallow situation (although they do look much cooler in a Bond-esque sort of way).
I will admit that "looking cool and retro" was a bit of a driving factor for chosing the double tank. As to the single regulator, I was looking at some vintage dive gear which seemed to have two tanks feeding into the same regulator, kind of like:

(not the exact set I was referencing as I'm on my work laptop in Brisbane right now and don't have my reference library with me... but close)

Professor Voodoo wrote:In the dark third panel I see Monty pausing with Elio...are they just exchanging bags or is he giving her a quick check to ensure she's gotten all her gear on right (which would be very in-character for Elio)?
A bit of both... though I imagine, were she able to speak, Monty would have been a bit miffed at being thought incapable of putting on her own dive gear; be it in character or no for him.

Professor Voodoo wrote:Elio's head looks a little odd however...he might have done with a bit more beard to elongate the face in relation to his neck.
I'll be honest: Elio gave me a fair bit of trouble on this one... eventually it got to the stage where the eraser was just starting to smudge and ruing the paper rather than rub out the pencil lines... at which point I decided to cut my losses rather than risk destroying the page . I think you're right about the extra beard.

Professor Voodoo wrote:The clothing choices are a little confusing here...Monty & Jethro looking like they're bundled up for a brisk autumn, everyone else in decidedly breezier summer attire.
I figure I pictured it as being comfortable-cool in the sun on that day. To be fair: while the others have been enjoying a nice day in St Tropez, J+M are getting ready for a number of evening/night hours spent in an open vehicle headed (though the never actually got there) for the mountains.

As a clothing side note: on the last panel of the last page, I'm a bit miffed as I spent quite a bit (for a comic panel at least) of time and effort putting a Burberry check inside of Monty's trench which, between the shadown and resizing of the picture, disappeared on the published version.

Professor Voodoo wrote:Interesting that Kara has already taken a look at the recovered hard drive (enough of a look to know about the encryption). Her hat is a cute touch by the way.
I figure she probably did either of her own accord or, possibly more likely, under the instruction of Elio or Michele. More to the point though, I wanted a reason to sent it back to the SWA rather than J+M taking it... and to delay the discovery of its contents a bit (read: leave it as open for a rainy-day when I get myself stuck at a later date).

Yes, I quite like the hat.

Professor Voodoo wrote:You successfully made me go back to chapter 4 to check Mary's business card for clues.
I sort of hoped that card should be screaming obvious at least on the second time around (and handed out as such for when Mary feels like making her presence known for one reason or another). "Universal Export" of course being the cover used by the SIS in many James Bond novels and movies. "Box 850" was the mailing address of the SIS for a goodly number of years, to the point where "Box 850" became internal slang for the organization itself.

Professor Voodoo wrote:A bad end it seems for Nick & Shamus...and the set-up for the next arc.
Correct on both counts.

Cheers for the in-depth comments again mate. As always: appreciated.

It certainly has the bold colours and patterning she tends to wear on her dresses, however... and without wanting to sound perverted (this is my internal fashion critic coming out, the little voice which judges everyone)... I don't think she has the bust for that cut. That sort of heart neckline needs a bit of, um... volume behind to fill it out and make it work, if you put it on Monty I think it might wind up looking a bit empty.

As a side note... generally when I'm designing or picking clothes for Monty I go with things which are either very tight across the bust (her deep-V tees, Beatrice Lane cocktail dress/LBD, skivvy tops) to accentuate what she's got, loose or loose-ish (Alexandria blouse, safari suit, khakis) so it doesn't matter... and she tends to wear those quite open (nice thing about working with a small bust is that what, on a larger one, may look boarder line slutty can be edgy, fashionable and daringly avant-garde), or cover her right up (Mondrian dress, "blue" dress, her standard slim/masculine cut suiting) so that any subtle help she's getting from the clothing isn't obvious.

Fortunately one thing which Monty most certainly doesn't have are body image issues. Razz

Heh! That's right, she's so thin and modelesque! Wink

Actually, though, it's funny that you bring that up, because one reviewer said she had a A-cup size chest, and this fit like a charm.

Who knows? Maybe our favorite fashionista can pull it off afteral! <3

By the way, my favorite of her outfits is definitely the fisrt one you posted for this forum thread!! I can't remember what that cubist/minimalist painting is called...I'm such a bad art history student!!! *sticks head in the sand like an ostrich*

The fashonista comment belongs to Kara. Monty is not so vain nor showoffsky like Kara is.

Jethro has been known to refer to her as "the world's most expensive beanpole"... reffering to a derogetory term Twiggy used to describe herself.

To be fair, Monty does like the feeling of knowing that she's just subtly more attractive/better dressed/more glamorous/more elegant/smarter (or whatever else she happens to decide her current edge over everyone in the immediate vacinity is) than anyone else in the room... and of course being confident in how you look is half the battle of pulling it off.

As to the fashionista part... yes and no I guess. She has an innate sense of what works on her, but doesn't really browse clothes stores or go gaga over designers... though she undoubtedly has some favorites (real life example: I tend to shop for shirts at Herringbone and trousers at Polo first when I need something because I know their cuts suit my body shape). She doesn't mind shopping, but doesn't like aimless shopping and tends to be more laser guided: Monty works out what she wants or needs, then sets out to find it. If it's not there then she'll either not buy anything or, if it's needed for a specific purpose, will find a substitute (again, not talking brands but more along the lines of: "I need a light trenchcoat", or "I need brown wingtips"... actually I do need brown wingtips).

Part of that's probably down to her no-nonsense personality, part of it as a result of having lived out of the back of a car for most of her cyborg life... she simply doesn't have space to collect lots of outfits which don't get used (though admittedly sometimes I crumble and use the throw away like of "it got sent back to the SWA for storage" ).

I'll admit, I probably only got to know Mondrian because of that dress. To be honest, as much as I love the aesthetic of Mondrian, Neo Plasticism and De Stijl, they're more something that I'd add to something else (say hung in an interior) as a visual element rather than as a work I can appreciate as art in and of themselves. Eh, that's just me though.

I seen many girls who were thin and had more breasts than what they seemed to have. Dont let size fool you in this- if the girl is small, then her breast cup size will be small though the ratio would be the same. A C Cup is only a 3 inch difference in size to an A Cup, and in a large lady would be great. Put it on a small girl like Monty, lets say, and that 3 inches would not be great and many would think she's a B Cup instead of a C Cup.

All girls want to be known as the prettiest of the class. That's a norm for them no matter the orientation!

But in my mind, Monty is not going to waste $10,000 on a gown or $2000 on a dress unless it is given to her or its part of the mission. Kara on the other hand would spend more money on clothes than it takes the SWA Motorpool to pay to fix their expensive German and British cars or their equivalent American Classic. That was the difference I was trying to say.

Hence Monty can look better in a pair of $30 American Jeans (your pick: Lees or Levis) than Kara in her $500 Sergio Valente or Gloria Vanderbuilt Jeans.

Yes and no, job specific garb, yeah... that's a job expense and therefore the SWA's problem (or at least can come out of the job kitty, which I think Monty probably considers her own anyway). As for personal/regular items; Monty doesn't buy much, but when she does purchase something she'll get the very best she can afford/exactly what she wants (which I guess is a bit of my own approach coming through)... I can assure you the Mondrian dress probably wasn't cheap, or her cocktail dress and the suits are bespoke, but none of it's shopping simply for the sake of shopping or having new things.

I absolutely love Piet Mondrian , and have yet to see a medium his art does not translate to. You have excellent taste my friend.

Well Monty's about 5'4", but she's often wearing heels as well so...

That said, I don't know if Monty holds any cyborg in high enough regard to let them near her stuff, particularly not Brit whom (as much as I personally like her character) I'm sure is one of those people Monty would prefer to keep at least two international borders herself and them at all times.

Pretty much this. I'd have to go back and check, but from memory he concentrated very much on the aesthetic, compositional and technical qualities of his work rather than trying to find some deep meaning... which might explain why it translates so well across mediums.

Some girls get into this sharing thing with their friends if they are the same size. Rachel was burnt by her past friends and mother in her pre-cyborg life. This is something she will not do unless its an emergency. Speaking of Emergencies, in her early cyborg years, Francesca had to share her clothes with Tea because what Tea was given by Chief Lorenzo was very inappropriate for outside use. He had her dressed as a Goth-Loli, that sicko... Tea was a tiny bit taller and more skinnier than Francesca, so the clothes fit but Tea needed her belt needed an extra hole made to fit Francesca's stuff.

Size wise, Rachel is currently at 5'2" (and growing) and Francesca was 'Upgraded' to 5'4" as her current and possibly permanent height but there is no way they are going to fit inside anything Britney or Monty has. Anything that would fit Francesca or Rachel would drape like curtains on Monty and Britney.

Thatís not true. If youíll recall, Rachel fits into Britneyís gym shorts. But when it comes to territory North of the equator, sheís defiantly not in the same league.

Besides, the occaisional thread-jacking can be quite fun, right? (And since I havent gotten through enough of the fanfics by the folks here, I cant really keep the thread-jacking going, so I suppose I'll just hop back to the original topic, haha.)

Also, just finished the comic, and, against more sensible time-management impulses, will probably get to reading And the Adventure Continues once I get home from work. Really enjoyed it, and hope that you have the time to get back into doing comics in the future!
