Gunslinger Girl: Bullets and Badges

Post by MP5 on Mon 8 Mar 2010 - 1:23

I've wondered what might become of our favorite fratello if they set foot into the world of Law Enforcement the way people do when directed by Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay. I think it would go a little something like this:

In the year 20xx, criminals are becoming smarter, deadlier, and greedier. Normal police departments are becoming overwhelmed and are forced on the defensive in dealing with crime. But now it's time for Law Enforcement to fight back. Advances in technology have given birth to some very special girls (and boys). In a previous life, they had been victims of fate, left to die or suffer horribly from acts that they did not deserve inflicted. But with their new lives and bodies, these same people now commit their lives to fighting crime that plagues the fair city of Miami. This is the story of the Miami-Dade Police Department's Precinct 2, home to the Special Action Police Task Force. Many officers, however, just call its members "The Gunslinger Girls."

So who's doing what? Well, here's a rough idea:

Captain Pieri Lorenzo-- The head honcho of the Special Action Police Task Force. Much to his frustration, the personnel of the SAPTF often leave trails of destruction in their wake as they progress in their cases against the criminals of Miami. Angry tirades are a commonplace occurrence in his office, and almost all of Precinct 2 knows when someone is being chewed out; all they have to do is listen for his unmistakable voice of rage. Yet despite his oft-angry exterior, he takes pride in the fact that his people get the job done. He just wishes they didn't leave such a big mess afterward.

First Lieutenant Ferro Milani-- Captain Lorenzo's trusted aide. Cold and calculating, she is often in charge of overseeing the progress of the members in the Special Action Police Task Force. Her no-nonsense demeanor does not allow her much humor in dealing with the partners' actions, and she often joins the Captain in chastising the latest bunch of 'Loose Cannons'.

Supervisor Olga Pavlov-- A second-generation Russian immigrant who has primary authority over the active partnerships in the Special Action Police Task Force. She is primarily in charge of assigning cases to the members of the SAPTF and making sure they turn in their reports.

Corporal Priscilla Giordano-- Assistant to Supervisor Pavlov, Priscilla is a clerk in charge of records pertaining to the SAPTF and Precinct 2. A desk pilot, but an enthusiastic and ambitious one at that.

Now, let's meet the primary beat-walkers:

Detectives Victor Hilshire and Triela-- This pair hails from the Sexual Crimes Bureau, investigating cases involving sex crimes of various natures, aggravated sexual abuse, and other related cases. Triela herself was once the victim of a child pornography ring, which had been shut down by the efforts of Victor Hilshire and his previous partner, Rachelle Belleut, who had fallen in the line of duty and in fact revived a dying Triela with what remained of her strength. The two currently work as an efficient team, having a voluminous arrest record under their collective belt.

Detectives Alessandro Ricci and Petrushka-- As members of the Vice Unit, Alessandro and Petrushka's duty is to investigate public order crimes, especially those involving narcotics and prostitution. Some cases have them working in tandem with Hilshire and Triela when child pornography is involved in a case. In a fashion befitting Miami Vice, Alessandro and Petrushka are well-dressed and often use a sports car of some sort, typically the result of asset forfeiture where confiscated property has been taken for official use. Rumors abound in Precinct 2 that Petrushka and Alessandro are carrying on a relationship that is slowly turning physical, which have yet to be proven but nonetheless raise more than a few eyebrows and red flags.

More to come when I have more time.

I'm a firm proponent of fanfiction in which Section 2 helps the cops perform police work. In fact, I've postulated that Enzo 'borrows' cyborgs every now and then to assist in cracking tough cases or even polishing off criminals whom the law can't touch for whatever reason. Therefore, I approve.

If you want to venture into Law and Order or even Law and Order: SVU territory, I might suggest bringing in that lawyer lady from Volume Seven (forget her name) and Rachelle Belleut. The woefully-ignored Nihad could makes his big break as this AU's Odafin Tutuola. Also, I'm sure Boomer takes no small measure of pride in seeing that 'Ferro Milani' is now a meme. Very Happy

Like I stated in the chat- the girls in the police force will not work because of their conditioning and programing. Furthermore, their age would disqualify them from any police work at all. The girls are there to stop crimes (via extermination squads) before they happen, not investigate the causes of why it happened. You also must remember what they are, why they were created and whom they work for. I can see the girls going into a police station and killing a few officers for being in cohoots with the enemy, then kill those they have held in the cells...

Though many good ideas came about in the chat- its a no-brainer as it being a no-go on the launch pad. Furthermore the comment of the OCs being able to work as outside the department is another major negative. My OC (Fernando) has worked for both the city and federal branches of law enforcement, and has seen it all in both. I'm sure that many other OCs will want to wear the badge so they can walk the beat and turn over a couple of snitches for info.

Anything is possible, but at the same time, there is a danger of twisting something so hard to make it fit one content, that it loses its own. This being the case here...

It's but an idea, Elfen. I don't expect to really act on it. That said, this is supposed to be like an 80's Hollywood cop flick. Realism is thrown out the window, paperwork is played up for comic relief, and not a whole lot of time goes by without a foot chase, fistfight, gun battle, explosion, or car chase involved. The Fratello in this iteration drive fast, expensive cars (though some may choose to be more practical), use very powerful weaponry, and in their efforts to combat crime, end up cutting a swath of inconveniencing destruction through the city of Miami where no innocents get hurt unless it's necessary for the plot.

The age of the girls itself is designed to be a non-issue. Like the Rose Hip series, their presence on a police force is handwaved. They are there as specialists, or in fact recognized by the public as truly special persons entirely--perhaps as a police explorer program that has been extremely ramped up. It takes place in a supposedly not-too-distant future where shit just did not go as planned when combating crime and violence is on the rise, prompting a controversial program that brings in cybernetically-enhanced teens and pre-teens. This is also why for the most part, the cyborgs are all in one precinct. They are an experiment in progress, to be evaluated as they succeed or fail. Their own interactions with the public will become a facet of their work--whether praised for their efficiency and righteousness or despised for their threatening strength and heavy-handedness.

Anyhow, here's some of the other roles I'd thought up (by now, you can probably figure out that they're all detectives of some sort):

Detectives Jean Croce and Rico--Jean and Rico are involved with the Gang Crimes Unit, which investigates any and all cases dealing with Street gangs and similar unorganized crime elements. Jean joined the Gang Crimes Unit out of a personal quest for revenge: he and Jose are the only ones left alive of their immediate family. Their little sister, Enrica Croce, and his fiancé, a fellow officer named Sophia Durante were victims of a drive-by shooting in broad daylight, Sophia having attempted to shield Enrica from the hail of gunfire before they were finished off execution-style in the crowded square of a shopping mall. Meanwhile, the Croce Brothers' parents (District Attorney Giovanni Croce and his wife Carla) were assassinated that same day in a car bomb attack perpetrated by a local drug cartel. The specific nature of the attacks suggest that they were related, though no one knows for sure. All Jean is sure of, however, is that he will not stop until he has wiped out the criminal enterprises that robbed him and Jose of their loved ones. In addition to being detectives, Jean and Rico are also part of the Miami-Dade Police Department Special Response Team (SRT), which carries out high-risk warrants, aircraft disaster recovery, barricaded subject situations, Hostage rescue, and dignitary protection missions.

Detectives Jose Croce and Henrietta--Jose and Henrietta are Jean and Rico's counterparts in the Organized Crime Unit, which investigates cases related to major crime syndicates, including those involving various forms of Mafia, large gangs such as the Hell's Angels, and drug cartels. Where Jean is primarily driven in his work by revenge, Jose does his job out of a sense of duty and willingness to prevent the tragedy that befell him and his brother. Some speculate that Henrietta is a surrogate replacement for Enrica, but no one has dared say this to either Jean or Jose. Whatever the case, this pair is dedicated to disrupting the activities of major crime syndicates in Miami. Like his brother and Rico, Jose and Henrietta are also part of the MDPD SRT.

Detectives Bernardo and Beatrice--Bernardo and Beatrice come from the Homicide Bureau, investigating and collecting evidence at murder scenes. Beatrice in particular has a highly-trained sense of smell that assists in the investigations, often leading to the arrest of the suspect within days of investigating a homicide scene. Unlike the other detectives, this pair operates more in a support capacity, analyzing evidence that leads to arrests of suspects guilty of committing murder.

In addition to Crime Scene Investigation, Bernardo and Beatrice are also members of the Special Patrol Bureau's Bomb Squad, trained to neutralize explosives as well as WMD threats.

Seems like you're holding onto canon pretty tightly, I think you'd be okay taking a few more liberties with the characters. For example; perhaps Beatrice does not have the "highly-trained sense of smell" herself, but is a K-9 officer who lets her German Shepard do the sniffing work.

As far as establishing the scenario: In his first chapter of Wham, Bang, Fizz, P.o.W., Robert Frazer conjectured that the girls see a lot of cimema during Jean's art class. Jean plays an educational DVD for them, but as soon as he leaves the room they swap out the disc for something less mind-enriching. Perhaps it is one of these films that inspire the cyborgs to dream-up their Police Story fantasy.

Yes I am. Reason being that if you twist the content of the story and definition of the characters, they are no longer what they are in their original format. To me, this defiles them.

I wonder how many Harry Potter Fanficts out there have him tending bar and listening in on his costumer's problems while dating/screwing the hired barmaids of his establishment? With Magic never (or hardly ever) used or mentioned. You can write it up, but this is no longer a Harry Potter FanFict; Just some story of some bartender who's looks and name you took for your story. Fiction it might be but its not Harry Potter Genre Worthy of a story, it becomes something of a story creation with borrowed characters. This is the point I'm trying to prove.

Looks like some old Ford based on the OP:

The running joke of the show was every time Frank Drebin pulled up to a crime scene, he always crashed into a collection of trash cans.

NYPD takes the cars from recently arrested felons, pretend to be their friend borrowing the car, and arrest those who approach the car.

As for a chase car- they have old Chevy and Crown Vics with 5.0 or bigger V8s, some of the supercharged- depending on the application. They can be marked and unmarked cars.

When I was a kid in NY (about 75 miles north of you, Elfen) it was pretty safe to run from the local cops, they had those Chevy Caprices with no special pursuit package, but the State Troopers had some stuff that could present a problem.

We never managed to get a straight answer from the Troopers as to what was powering those Mustangs, but it sure as hell wasn't the stock 225hp 302.

On the subject of unmarked cars the cops here are starting to get nasty. Two of the latest are an Evo X with body kit and a lowered VW Sirocco with big ricer rims and cannon. Thhey've also taken to using clapped out old tradies vans to mount mobile speed cameras in. At least you can't miss the highway patrol: bright red Monaros, Commodores and Falcons.

Potential scene with Sandro and Petra:

Sandro and Petra pulled into their usual station near Miami Beach, parking their Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG convertible at a beachside curb area. In the past couple of months, drug activity was on the rise in the outlying areas, and while dealers weren't peddling meth out of carts like shaved ice, it was getting to a point where the chief of police was screaming for results, and in turn, Captain Lorenzo screaming at Vice to get those results. The two detectives, familiar with the area, volunteered to deal with the problem starting at the street level--buyers, dealers, perhaps some distributors. Of course, this required other sets of eyes and ears on the street, which was precisely whom they were waiting for.

"Kid's a little late today." said Petra idly. "Think he went to school?"

"Who, little Roberto?" asked Sandro. "That'd be a surprise."

"You never know, sometimes kids actually do care about their future." replied Petra. However, the sound of bicycle tires scuffing under braking on pavement proved to the contrary.

"Well, look who's here." greeted Sandro, leaning over from his seat. "Yo, Roberto. Dodging the truant officers again? You know they're gonna catch you one of these days. You should really be in class."

"Get bent, Ricci. You ain't my dad." replied Roberto flippantly, then turning to Petra. "Good day to you, Señorita Petra." the boy added politely as Petra bowed her head as Sandro palmed his face.

"Why do you give her so much respect? We're both detectives." complained Sandro.

"I was taught to be nice to women, especially pretty ones." replied Roberto. "And since you're neither of those--"

"All right, all right, enough!" interrupted Sandro as Petra chuckled beside him. "Got
anything new for us?"

"Ok, you never heard this from me, but there been word going around at school of a dude who's been slinging weed outta his apartment on 500 block of--"

"We're not looking for soft crap, Roberto. Weed is for the uniforms to deal with. What about the harder stuff, meth, or coke?"

"Well, I seen a guy moving bags of white outta his big-ass Beemer in a lot over on 40th street. Couple rich white suburb folk and some junkies pass by every day."

"And you're sure about this?"

"Hey man, I ain't no snitch, ya heard?"

"I said," repeated Sandro, slipping Roberto a fifty-dollar bill, "are you sure about this?"

"You know me, Sandro. I'm Honest Roberto, distant great-nephew of Abe Lincoln." the boy replied, pocketing the fifty. Sandro started up the car as Petra finished talking with Roberto.

"Thanks for the info, Roberto. You're real dependable, you know that?"

"Thanks, Señorita Petra. You know, you shouldn't hang around Sandro too long."

"Why's that?"

"He's a schmuck. Pretty lady like you's only gonna get dragged down by him." blurted Roberto.

"And who do you suggest I hang around with?" asked Petra with a playful smirk. "Surely, not yourself?"

"Well, if you're free sometime..."

"Dream on, kid. Now run along, and don't get in trouble." said Sandro as Roberto mock-saluted the pair and pedaled away. Sandro pulled out of their parking space and moved into traffic, making their way to 40th street. His hand reached across the center console and he intertwined his hand with Petra's.

"If only he knew that you were spoken for." commented Sandro.

"Jealous of a teenage blabbermouth, hun? That's not like you. Besides, if he did know, we couldn't keep this up." said Petra, giving her partner/lover a quick peck on the cheek.

"Point taken, he'd probably send in an anonymous tip." mused Sandro. "Now then, let's see if his observation gives us what we're looking for..."

I'll put in a car chase some other time.
