I gave up after the fourth season, but listening to folks who watched the entire series:

Spoiler:

It appears the "sideways universe" arc was after they were all dead, but that the "Island Adventures" were all real and not some dream/death experience. So they did actually survive the crash.

Like "The X-Files", the producers specifically chose not to answer many of the questions about the "mythology of the show" in the series finale (which is what I figured would happen and why I stopped watching), so for things like the Polar Bear and why The Others wanted Walt's son and such, you're speculation is as valid as anyone else's speculation.

Enjoying the French Open. So far not many upsets, but I'm hoping the next round will shake up the tourney a bit.

Pretty much =P

Back on Australian soil... no trouble, no arrests. Taking the day to play intertubes catch-up.

On a side note: why the hell does no-one ever smile in LAX? Ok, so the place eats your soul, but normally I can get pretty much anyone to at least crack a smile, even if it's the worn "yeah, long day" sort.

I hate that airport.

Do you mean that there was no trouble, or that no-one caught you? Wink

Umm... what are the rights of a foreign citizen before I answer that?

Nah, kept the speech short and relaxed, just like the rest of the wedding... there was plenty of time to humiliate him afterwards

I think he's referring to physical fights, Cherubino. Or perhaps he means that he does fight with people a lot, and does not enjoy it, remembering times when he did not fight with people as much.

LOLZ, Fiver got it right.

One of the downsides to working in the nursing field. It is inevitable that your patients will assume they know more than you. Yet, when you try and ask them about their medical history they typically draw maybe's, what if's, or outright blanks.

It's kinda why I like the days when I'm in long term care(LTC), the patients are rarely under 50 and the only real thing they typically bitch about is if you gave them the wrong drink or if they just happen to change their mind as older folks are prone to do.

Ah, brakes... that's where I'm at too. I've been suffereing a warped front disk for awhile now but have been leaving it till I did the San Francisco trip. Now that's done I can address car issues. The vibration out of the disk was pretty bad, especially if you got on the picks at anything upward of 70kph. So both front disks are getting replaced, along with new pads and wheel bearings (the latter a result of the brake issue). There's also a coupling in the steering gone... which is what I originally sent to car in for, the rest just sort of snowballed

I'm generally happy to do car work myself, but steering is something that I prefer to leave to the experts.

Re: What are you happy about right now?

Post by Triela Hilshire on Mon 7 Jun 2010 - 20:23

I just had a $2k repair job done to my 02 Prius about 3 months ago. Started out as an odd seemingly random very faint tug either to the right or left, then got a little more noticeable as if I had run over say a small pothole. Then an alarming severe vibration jerking back and forth like a jackhammer. That is when I brought it into Toyota for service.

Couldn't have been at a worse time, as Toyota was in the start of the recent recalls for stuck pedals and sudden acceleration problems. Also was time for routine service too. Well routine service was completed and the idiots who looked at my car could find no problem with the steering so they left that be. A day later I went to pick up my Prius and lo and behold, Skuld wouldn't start. A tech came out with a jump starter, managed to get the car started and immediately took his hand off the steering wheel as it went completely wild violently shaking harder than before, and persisted for about 20 seconds after turning the car off.

So for a week I had a rental, a brand new 2010 Corolla which was nice enough, but no navigation, no satellite radio, and no tape deck to run music through.

Things are fine now, but its something I hope not to see again.

This must be contagious. My 4 wheeled vehicles are fine but the bike needs front brakes. It's an easy job that I can do in an hour...once the motorcycle shop opens (closed Monday) and I can get the parts.

On any other car I'd say $2,000 was ridiculous for a brake job...but does your Prius has some sort of unique regenerative braking system that saves kinetic energy?

The $2000 repair was for a steering issue. Last brake job I had was for the 1993 Corolla which was in the mid $500 range for both front and rear. Not sure if that is on the high end of things or what, I just know I'm not going to that particular third party brake shop again.

Triela Hilshire wrote:I just had a $2k repair job done to my 02 Prius about 3 months ago.

Murphy's law says that whatever issue you're having with the car won't appear whilst it's at the mechanics.

So what was it in the end? Sounds like some sort of power-steering issue, the Prius uses electric power steering right? I dunno, I'm not keen on how modern cars are serviced, plug a cable in and see what the diagnostic says rather than actually getting under the car and looking.

Triela Hilshire wrote:So for a week I had a rental, a brand new 2010 Corolla which was nice enough, but no navigation, no satellite radio, and no tape deck to run music through.
Heh, I don't have any of those anyway so... well a previous owner installed a CD player so that's alright. I considered getting the TomTom app for the iPhone, but I've nowhere to fix the phone in the car. The Alfetta's windscreen is so heavily raked that putting the phone there blocks too much vision.

I hope the dealership was paying for that rental...

Not sure what the cause was, the whole electric rack and pinion steering system had to be replaced. From what I remember the repair tech said the electric assist motor was playing tug of war with itself.

As for the rental Toyota paid for that.

On any other car I'd say $2,000 was ridiculous for a brake job...but does your Prius has some sort of unique regenerative braking system that saves kinetic energy?
Yeah, the brakes I was intending to do myself, but if the steering's getting fixed then I want that vibration gone ASAP so it can't cause anymore damage... and I can't see myself having time to deal with the brakes for at least a fortnight.

Looks like being about AU$112 for each disk and another $140 for the pads.

The busted steering coupling however looks like it'll be expensive, and the mechanic doesn't know if he can source a brand new one.

Ouch... well that explains the cost I guess. Was that a case of the whole setup actually needing replacing, or just that Toyota would only sell the whole system as a module and not individual parts?

The whole system had to be replaced, which included labor, I'm no expert when it comes to cars (PCs are more my thing) but I'd rather have the whole system replaced than say a part that may have caused some damage elsewhere in the steering system.

I dunno, I just remember Mitsubishi once charging us a couple of hundred dollars for a new cooling fan when all that needed replacing in it was a fifty-cent steel pin that had sheered. However Mitsubishi wouldn't sell the pin seperately.

Then the clutch went at 36 000 km.

We bought a Land Rover next time.

the car i just sold had a similar problem,a 1999 corolla built in Japan,I went out one morning to find everything was on,the fan was running, one of the headlights was flickering, the wipers were going etc, etc,
I ring up the dealer i bought it from and explain what was hppening,20 mins later tow truck arrives and hauls it away,
turns out a rubber gromit holding the wiring loom had been cut to much allowing water into a set of connectors, which makes me believe that car was built 5 mins before the end of a friday shift !
this required the replacement of the entire wiring loom, fortunately the car was still under warranty ,but for 4 months i had to drive a rental, paid for by Toyota !
Seems i was one of only 4 people in the world that this has happened to !

I've got something like that happening with my truck. Although unlike the rest, this falls under the "my own damn fault" bin.

I have pretty much replaced my beloved Mighty Max as my daily driver with my 240SX. Ever since I 'finished' it, I've had to replace the transfer case five(5!) times. However, I file this under the 'my own damn fault' bin because I do push her harder than I need to.

However I started going a bit easier on her after the third time I had to replace the transfer case and still she seems to be chewing through them faster than a hopped up Chevy diesel. The only thing I can think of is that the axle assembly itself can't put down all 450HP of the 4G83T I transplanted in there even with the upgraded drivetrain components putting extra stress on the transfer case to pump out the extra power.

There's a pro-shop that's been interested in this rig for some time and I think I just might go ahead and sell it to them.

How many horses did it come with originally? Razz

I gotta admit I'm reasonably careful with the Alfetta's driveline, ever since arriving at the mechanics to see Peter revving up some kid about my age who'd blown the diff out of an Alfa 75 (effectively the same car as the Alfetta GTV but with a saloon body). I'm always a bit scared walking into that place incase I fucked something up and get drilled for it. Add to that that the 80-81 transaxel is apparently a unique piece and difficult to source...

Then of course there's the nightmare stories of doughnuts letting go. I've replaced four of those so far in the five years I've owned the car now.

So yeah, no laying long elevens for me sweat Now, "carrying speed" through corners, that's a different story

About 100 horses originally. To be honest I got the idea for upgrading from the original 2.6L engine because we took out a friends in order to do the standard 300K mile rebuild and after we got the engine out, I thought "This is pretty damn big engine bay". So I looked for one myself the next week and my creative madness took off from there.

Apparently my dad said the same notion when he first took a look at the massive engine bay in the '60's Chevy Nova's.

To quote a friend: all my Christmases have come at once... and they're fried!

Breakfast out with friends on the weekend... one of life's little luxuries: double shot cap with the Campos fry-up (the obligatory cafe menu "big breakfast"... oddly something I never found on menus in San Francisco): that's three eggs, three rashes of bacon, sausage, hash-brown, two grilled tomato halves, saute whole field mushrooms, fried halumi cheese with sourdough bread all stacked up on a plate so you can't figure out how to eat it without it all falling over.

Just the thing for a winter's morning... and we didn't even have to cue to get in! That's unusual for Campos on a sunday.

Very nice work here. I like the outline of light you managed to capture off your mate's profile, and the shallow depth of focus gives a nice hazy effect to the background light. Long shutter time also gives a cool blur to the dark shirted individual to the left.

Cheers mate, yeah I like shooting short depth of field... probably a little too much if I'm honest. I still get a little lost composition wise if I need to get sharp focus right through the picture.

That photo's from awhile back (note everyone still wearing summer clothes and the fan going), but it helps illustrate a point.
