smart cars

I don't know what the Continental attitude is concerning Smart Cars. Here in the US they're rare enough to be considered rather exotic.

A more mundane explanation could be; that's what Alessandro can afford. In canon, only Hillshire & the Croce brothers are shown driving expensive cars, and there is the suggestion that they come from backgrounds of affluence. Agency pay is good (as hinted at by Lauro) but perhaps not Michele Pagani good.
I've always seen the little Smart FourTwos as being quite chic, but more as an accessory rather than a vehicle. Essentially: you put on your Gucci sunglasses, Armani jacket, pick up your iPhone and get into your Smart Car. Sandro seems to be a bit of a metrosexual, and the Smart is a very metro car to drive.

I remember being in Paris when they were fairly new to the market. Walking through the better heeled areas they were like arses: everyone had one.

I suppose that explains why they haven't caught on in the US. Here too, everyone has arses...they just happen to be about 18 inches wider on average, which explains the preponderance of Escalades & Hummers on our roads.
Yuppies perhaps right now.
Perhaps that term holds a different connotation in Australia. In the US, "Young Urban Professionals" are more likely to purchase a BMW...and then never drive it properly (id est; sideways with smoke pouring off the tires). When they get a few years older they typically switch to Volvo's.

They're pretty popular in Seattle. We have a Smart dealership that imports grey market cars.

The nearest I've seen them sold is Houston...where they're available at Mercedes Benz dealerships. I had the impression that they're fully US spec though (i.e. not grey market).

I don't remember seeing any in Seattle...but I left there in 2002, so they may not have been importing them yet.

I don't think the dealership is part of either of our Mercedes dealerships and they may very well be US-spec models now, having started with grey market when there was no US spec car.

Honestly they didn't really catch on here either, except as company cars etc. Basic reason here is simply because, though it's a good city car the FourTwo doesn't do well on highways... and you spend a lot of time on highways in Australia. Simply the distances are too great to get away with a pure city car. I imagine it'd be a contributing factor in the States as well.

No, it's pretty much the same meaning over here. BMWs are the cars of choice, but a Smart or Prius (Pious?) would also fit thanks to the more recent version wanting to show that they also care about the planet.

I think I might like to touch on this a bit in Once Again where Sandro is expressing his surprise at Michele's latest vehicular purchase, if I may.

Kara's greatest nightmare:

Forget a Turbocharged Enzo with hydraulics and 20" wheels, this is a much bigger problem. When a Smart car beats a Ferrari in the 1/4 mile... well, that's not pretty.

Mind you, it is powered by a Hayabusa engine.

Was it Brabus that built the infamous "teddy bear" rims in the '80's...or someone else? Ronal or Enkei maybe?

Triela practically blows a circuit breaker when she sees them...

Triela: OHHHHH!!! Hillshire, you have to get a set of those for the Benz!

Hillshire: Absolutely not.

Triela: What about you Sandro...they'd look so cute on your little car!

Alessandro: No way...I get enough shit about that car already.

Triela: Allison, I know you won't let me down!

Allison: Are you kidding me? Hell no I'm not putting those on my Lancia!

Henrietta: Face it Triela. Even I know those rims are dorky.

Triela: (dejectedly) Aww, you people all suck.

Speaking of the Smart Roadster, did anyone ever find out what happened to the AC Ace project?

I believe Gordon Murray was involved. The intention was to re-body the Smart Roadster, give it a bigger engine and proper gearbox and sell it under the AC marque.

Another possible replacement for Sandro's Smart? The T.25 city car:

Is mildly amused at the use of a rural location for the photo shoot

...this one at least has the benefit of being pened by Gordon Murray (for those not familiar, think Mclaren F1). Gets 74mpg and accellerates to 60mph in, umm, 16.2 seconds.

I can't like the look of that Citroen. Does it look fast? Yes. Does it look practical, even for obscenely rich people? Hell no. I'm guessing that it has a back-up camera, but if you're ever forced to angle-park, you're not going to have a rear end left when you come back from the shopping.

The second thing to come to mind was a classic Caption-Crack caption:
"There are twelve Cylon models- This one gets eight miles to the gallon."

Glocks are not the shit. Glocks can fail the same as any other gun. I've seen it personally, and have even heard first-hand accounts of something as basic as a slide-retaining pin snapping, the slide flying off. Get over the obsession and buy what fits your hand, your wallet, and ability.

EVO mag got their hands on one to testdrive a few issues back, which was props to Citroen in that it's actually a roadable car.

Alessandro: Will you two assholes quit cracking jokes and help me get this thing down!?
Elio: I'm sure you've got a cyborg for that.

Petra: *ahem* Much as I would LOVE to help, 'Sandro said no... something about machismo and chest hair was all I heard.

Alessandro: *eyebrow twitch*
As the men struggle up the stairs with the refrigerator (Sandro: Damn it, why does Petra have a 3rd floor room!?) they are startled by a friendly voice behind them.

Henrietta: Hello Mr. Pagani, Mr. Rissi, Mr. Alboreto. Do you need some help with that?

Michele: I'm sure we can manage...

Henrietta snatches the burden away from the 3 men and skips up the stairs with no greater effort than if she was carrying a box of cakes for the next tea party.

Alessandro: I'll never be able to show my face around compound again.

Michele: We are never going to live this down.

Elio: (facepalm) Is it too late in life for me to start a stuffed animal collection?

[Later that evening as two young girls approach their room in the Cyborg Warehouse...]

Henrietta: "I wish Triela was here. I'm hungry and some tea and cake sounds really good right now."

Rico: "We could always ask Claes?" [Latent memories rise to the surface.] "Oh, yeah. Nevermind."

Henrietta opens the door and steps inside, turning on the light. On their desk is a plate with a glass cover enclosing a brick-sized home-made tiramasu.

Good news everyone! Sandro can finally upgrade.

A new Smart Cabrio gets released later this year.

In other news, to revisit the first post in the thread: having now been back to Paris the Smart Four Twos are under serious pressure from Fiat 500s for the title of "most prevalent single model".

I can agree. The Fiat 500's are fun little cars...unlike anything Smart has to offer.

Now as for Marissa'a take on a Smart...

"Is Triela alright," Priscilla asked as Hillshire helped a limping Triela to the infirmary.
"Don't ask," Hillshire hissed.
"Oh I'll be alright when I get my hands on that jerkass who doesn't know what a crosswalk is for," Triela growled.
"SMART car," Priscilla nodded.
"Yup," Hillshire said.
"SMART car my ass, I don't car that his car is ruined.  When I get my hands on that bastard, I'll......" Triela ranted fist in the air.
"Do nothing, if you want to that store you found," Hillshire replied.
"Yes sir," Triela said quickly.
"Steiff bear store," Priscilla asked.
"The Stieff Bear store, with a little gift from my mother," Hillshire replied.
"Oh...." Priscilla said as the pair entered the infirmary.

They're making something of an appearance among retiree communities where everything from shopping centers to golf courses is just a few blocks away by private roads - no pesky drivers' licenses required - and small slow vehicles are in demand. But far more popular are customized golf carts. Really, how can a Smart compare with this?
