Good ol Boy's Thread o Sketches

Post by Good ol Boy on Wed 26 May 2010 - 18:10

Hey guys. I've decided to put all my upcoming sketches into this one thread, rather than create a whole bunch of them.

I'll open this with a Summertime shot of Dusty. Why has she brought the Remington to the beach? Sharks? Irate fiddler crabs?

With his cyborg wearing a bikini like that I'm surprised Murdoch isn't the one carrying the shotgun!

Murdoch: (to a group of gawking Italian teenage boys) Keep moving...nothing to see here boys. (cocks the shotgun)

Heh, well more than likely he doesn't know where she is... She probably conned poor Kit into distracting him long enough for her to slip away.

Here's little page I'm working on. Sort of a briefing for a hit. It's nowhere near done yet

And how about a couple of mob goons? Here's Big Mouth Carmine and Jimmy the Ferret. Possible targets or just a couple of goofballs?

Chief Lorenzo: Col. Murdoch is a cigar smoker? Very good...here, you have to try these Gurkha's I just got!

You've given Dusty an alert but much more innocent look here than in your previous drawings.

The classic Laurel & Hardey, Abbot & Costello pairing. Excellent work on the faces here.

ElfenMagix: Heh, thanks.

Kiskaloo: Heh heh, glad to see Spock approves.

Professor Voodoo: Hey thanks. Yeah, she does look a bit more innocent. Was trying to show her in sort of "normal" mode, as opposed to "ready to dish out the punishment" mode.
Yeah, I sort of thought up those two as a Laurel and Hardy, or Mutt and Jeff kind of duo.
I'm glad you noticed their expressions. I've been working hard to make my characters more expressive, since I'm notorious for not making characters expressive enough.

Here's another quick sketch I'm working on (far from finished). I'm kind of throwing around the idea of a mission in Bosnia (probably just call it "The Sarajevo Job"), in which they must pick up some weaponry in-country. Ergo, Murdoch has found a 7.62x25mm CZ-52 pistol and Dusty has picked up a 5.45mm AKSU-74.

I'd missed this one. Dusty certainly looks like she's enjoying the cold weather a lot more than her handler.

Dusty: What's the problem, boss? You told me it sometimes gets cold in Texas.

Murdoch: There's a bit difference between cold and #%&*@ cold!

Dusty: "Well, I'm enjoyin' it. You know how many times it snowed where I'm from, in my entire life? Twice."

Standing out seems like a major component of Dusty's personality. As for the hat, is it pink? You can't really stand out without a hot-pink hat.

Where is the long suffering Kit during all this? Hauling all the gear from the car up icy stairs to the hotel room perhaps?

Nah, her hat's white. She wouldn't be caught dead in a pink cowboy hat... just a little too Paris Hilton for her taste.

Yep, Kit is stuck hauling the luggage... he's always stuck hauling the luggage.

Well, if we're going to be trading movie/TV lines...

Kit: (dumps bags on the ground) Ok, this is ridiculous. This is a long range mission, Mr Murdoch was pretty specific that we were to bring the barest minimum we need to survive. Just what the hell is in here anyway?

Kit: (opens trunk, lifts out giant hairdryer) What...is this...

Dusty: It's my industrial strength hairdryer... AND I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT! You think it's easy getting hair to go like this?

Nice work. You tend to portray Kit as the comically downtrodden younger brother, but the bottom right drawing suggests that he can be plenty dangerous when the need arises...presumably when his handler or older sister is threatened (I'm assuming he's working with Murdoch now and has been "adopted" by Dusty).

Yeah, I've pretty much cast Kit in the role of the long-suffering younger brother. I has to be a tough job, playing the straight man to an eccentric CIA agent who happens to look and sound like Sean Connery and a trigger-happy girl who looks like she wandered in from some 80s rock video head bang . To be honest though, Kit probably wishes he was more than just a "little bother" to Dusty... but then again, he's at that age where all it takes is a girl to smile in his direction for him to fall madly in love... (Been there, done that... can't say I miss those days, lol)

Heh, I can see it.

Murdoch has taken Dusty and Kit to the firing range. Dusty sits at a shooting bench, cleaning her newly acquired HK P9s and listening to some Black Sabbath on her iPod while Kit bangs away at a target. Murdoch leans against a beam, and takes a drag off his Macanudo.

Murdoch: (Blows a smoke ring.) "Compensating for something there, lad?"

Murdoch...and indeed all 3 of your characters...is developing a full fledged personality as you do more and more drawings. Have you considered doing a short comic featuring all of them?

One point; you might have gone a bit longer on the Colonel's jacket in the group pic, although I do like the oversized coat on Kit.

Yeah, I'd like to do a few pages on them. I've started a brief Murdoch/Dusty story. Once it starts to come together a bit more, I'll post it.

The whole group shot was done really quickly. I didn't spend as much time on the details of Murdoch's clothes as I should have.

"C.I.A. Nothing to see here, move along."

It reminds me of an an entertaining scene in Queen and Country, where Crocker is visiting the CIA liason at the U.S. Embassy in London. As he looks about, he sees the all of the stationery - the pens, the rulers, the scissors, the staplers - are all marked "Property of C.I.A.". When Crocker asks what brought this peculiar pedanticism about, the liason simply smiles and says "it cuts down on office theft."!

heh heh. I may have to look that one up. I'm a fan of several British movies and TV programs. Having nothing but over-the-air TV, though... it's tough to see many of them.

The whole CIA thing is to kind of explain what Murdoch is doing there. A CIA agent on a prolonged assignment with the SWA.

Queen and Country's a comic - actually written by an American (Greg Rucka), despite the title. It is based off of a TV show, though, Rucka describes it as a modern-day update of '70s spy drama The Sandbaggers - I think that the DVDs are out of print, although the first episode is on YouTube. Q&C bills itself as the anti-Bond - a "realistic" approach with focus on office politicking and departmental rivalry over stunts and sports cars (although there's still plenty of gunfights and gratuitous sex). And smoking. Lots and lots and lots of smoking. There's some scenes where the artists put a filter over the panels, the characters are puffing away that intently!

Apparently Dusty has started "helping" Kit dress himself better... Still dresses in nothing but black or gray, but now... God help us all.

They make a very interesting-looking trio in terms of their outfits and style. Yes Indeed

Kit: "Did you steal this from someone's dog?"

Kit: "They do?"
Dusty: "Sure, why not. Just put it on."

Heh, they're really a weird bunch, when you think of it... an old government agent who prefers Brooks Bros. suits, a tall blonde who is convinced the 80s never ended, and sort of an emo/goth lookin' kid who really isn't either at all.

I think quite a few of the OCs around here fit into the "weird bunch" category.

I kind of pity the new generation of male cyborgs...I imagine they all get roped into being a life sized dress-up doll for the girls at one point or another.

Marisa: Hey Mr. Voodoo...can I braid your beard?

Voodoo: Mari, if you come near my beard and I'll write nuns into your next 10 episodes.

Marisa: *groan* You're no fun.

Grrrrrreat art! You have a unique style that makes your work stand out!
The way Dusty looks sideways while sipping her drink is classic. You really have your expressions down pat, that's one of the main reasons I buy comics. Murdoch looks cool too, reminds me a bit of J Jonah Jameson, the newspaper boss of Spiderman. Excellent stuff, can't wait to read the finished story!

tremec6speed: Hey thanks. Yeah, old Murdoch does have a bit of the Jameson look to him. I was really kind of shooting for a very fatherly figure who nonetheless, really knows his stuff (which in his case would be all manner of secret agent grooviness). He's very much a "been there, done that" kind of guy. I'd like to have some more pages ready soon. Unfortunately, my job is a bit taxing, so it may wind up taking a while.

I decided to take a break from the Dusty comic I'm making to do a quick little group shot. What's Dusty complaining about this time? The unavailability of Shiner Bock beer in Italy? The utter lack of classic rock videos on MTV? Why she can't understand the popularity of Twilight? That Murdoch "needs" to find her a .45acp HK P9S? Who knows. The girl can be a little "high maintenance" at times...
