Right now I am thinking of just "going with what I know will work" and only watch Strike Witches 2 when it starts.

The first fansub of Seitokai Yakuindomo has hit the web, but I know I will just compare it to Seitokai no Ichizon and find it lacking as I did with Mayoi Neko Overunn! compared to Nyan Koi!.

Bah... I don't think I'm going to be watching much this season, sadly. Since I moved house I've been on a 3GB-per-month bandwidth limit, and as the univeristy network blocks torrenting, there's little opportunity to actually get hold of material. Which is a great pity, because there's a real good buzz about this summer with a lot of shows that I'm interested in.

Ah well. There's always YouTube and Crunchyroll...

Seitokai Yakuindomo ,just watched it,set in what used to be an all girl school, the first ever male students arrive, unfortunately the student council is of course all girls who have obviously led a somewhat sheltered life up to now and have formed some unusual perceptions of the male half of the species.

the unfortunate lead male character has to deal with these girls and as he is normal behave himself, going to school on the train having to hold his hands in the air to prevent any accusations for example !

Watching it now. Looks like your standard "ecchi comedy", except it's the girls who are perverts instead of the guys. It's based on a serialized manga, but the episode kind of played more like a 4-koma as it was broken up into multiple vignettes.

Surprisingly, there was no fan service, but it is absolutely packed with sexual innuendo so perhaps that is the fan service angle they are taking.

If they play it like Rosario + Vampire I shall stick around, but if it becomes more like Chu-bra!! I will probably drop it early.

Seitokai Yakuindomo (Episode One): It didn't make me give up in disgust the way that some more fan service laden shows do, but it also seemed pretty lame and uninspired. The characters are pretty bland. Also the artwork, OP, and ED all seemed second rate. I think the student council president suddenly saying crude things out of the blue was supposed to be funny, but I didn't really find it very funny. And this is coming from a guy who liked a rather crude manga called High School Girls that was written primarily for the purpose of ripping stereotypes about girls who go to all girls schools being prim and proper to shreds.
Actually, one thing that I think seperate series like High School Girls and B Gata H Kei from this one is that for all that they may be pretty massively exaggerated, they do kind of feel like there's a grain of truth to them. Additionally, while many of their characters are kind of one note-ish, they manage to be a bit less obvious about it then this show is. They also seem to have more energy to them.
Of course it may be partly because of series like High School Girls and B Gata H Kei that this show doesn't work all that well for me. After those two series "this wallet is obviously not a girl's because it doesn't have a condom in it" doesn't seem like an assumption that should be made. Also, are the girls at this school really that sheltered? Surely some of them have like, you know, male siblings. For that matter a fair number of them should realistically have boyfriends from outside of their school. Admitedely many of the girls in High School Girls were not exactly experts on the male half of the species either, but still...

Damnit it's early, but I'll give High School of the Dead episode 1 a review. I only meant to watch a little bit of it, but it seems that went down the drain. Razz

To start off, the artwork is very good, in usual Madhouse fashion, and is very similar to the manga. In fact, the whole thing so far is a very faithful adaptation. The action is well-paced and awesome, as well as over the top in a cool way. The fanservice isn't too heavy so far, but it is there. I'd say it's more than most, but less than, say, Strike Witches. It's at a "gravy" level right now; it's not an annoyance, but rather a nice touch. It's slightly toned down from the original, I believe. It's very easy to get into, as I implied earlier, and it's just plain fun to watch! The OP ("High School of the Dead") and ED ("Them") are both pretty awesome, but they haven't become notable tunes, not yet at least. Finally, the voice acting, even though it's Japanese and I can't quite comment on the quality properly, is very solid. Notable voice actors include Junichi Suwabe (as the main character), who voiced Archer in Fate/Stay Night, a very good job might I add. There's also Eri Kitamura, known for Ami Kawashima in Toradora! and recently, Yui in Angel Beats! And, awesomely enough, Kouta Hirano the gun otaku is voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama, the voice of Link in the Legend of Zelda games. He doesn't talk there, but his shouts brought smiles to many a gamer. So, all in all, it's an awesomely badass show so far. A great first showing, and I'll definitely continue watching it.

I highly recommend it, especially if you're a fan of GARcher or the original manga.

I think you're being a bit harsh on the show, Piero. While it pretty obviously wears its 4-koma strip origins on its sleeve (what with one character being introduced three times in the same episode), I thought it fair enough. It's bright, colorful and energetic with good art and animation (whereas even HSotD cheated a bit with CGI and some long stills), and the OP/ED are both lovely. It's not laugh-a-minute, but it's pleasant to look at, and the quickfire pace means that even the flat jokes are drained away quickly and don't have time to go sour.

You can probably chalk a lot of our difference in opinion on Seitokai up to personal taste. I didn't find the rapid fire humor very effective because for the most part I found it to be one long chain of misfires that I didn't find very funny. I also felt that the delivery lacked something compared to last season's B Gata H Kei. Seitokai certainly changed scenes a lot, but I didn't find it very energetic. As for the animation, I remember some of it seeming kind of off to me.

Sorry if my review seems harsh, but honestly... about the only good thing I can think of to say about the show is that it didn't get under my skin enough to make me really hate it.

High School of the Dead (Episode One): I have mixed feelings on this one. On one hand, the first episode had some very good action scenes and was pretty exciting overall. It was also -as FiveX noted- pretty easy to get into. I didn't find the fan service too big a problem for the most part, although there were a couple times when it strayed into fan desservice territory.
There was one issue with this show that really bugged me though. I may be opening myself to accusations of being too politically correct by saying this, but the portrayal of female characters in the series thus far is extremely unflattering. Of the four girls who stood out a lot and struck me as main cast, one seems to be kind of dumb and has colossal boobs, the main character's probable main love interest can't get a grip when she needs to, one is smart and has it together but is really bitchy, and the other is a hot chick with a sword who gives the impression of being coldly unemotional. Combine that with the fact that the two guys who strike me as major cast seem to be in control but also give off a strong "not popular with the girls" vibe, and... yeah. There's also the series lead slapping his probable love interest in order to get her to get a grip. On one hand, this is pretty understandable given the circumstances, but combined with the portrayal of the female cast members in general (both the aforementioned four and some zombie fodder) and the fact that this girl happens to be the guy's former childhood friend who he's currently on bad terms with after she started dating his best friend...
Actually, I guess the reason this rubs me the wrong way is that rightly or wrongly, it sort of comes across as having an appeal for "angry young males who aren't popular with the girls and aren't willing to change their attitudes in order to fix that." Which may be a grossly unfair impression considering how little has been revealed about some of these characters at this point, but it still ended up being one of defining parts of my impression of the show thus far.
That being said, it was pretty fun, and this is coming from a guy who generally doesn't like zombie stuff very much. Laughing

I can't decide whether I like Amagami and Seitokai whatever... I liked the pacing of the latter and actually kind of enjoyed the dirty jokes, but I'm really hoping there's a bit more to it than that. As for Amagami, I normally like shows like it, but even given my fairly lax standards it's not resonating with me. It feels bland even for a show where the characters are normal high schoolers. And the "four episodes per arc" kind of thing doesn't give me great confidence it will go anywhere.

Oh, BTW, I also watched Shufuku no Campanella. One blogger summed it up as "Aria the erogame", and that seems pretty accurate so far. Despite the fact I wasn't big on Aria, I kind of like this because I'm a tremendous moetard.

@Piero:

Considering we haven't really met three of the girls, I wouldn't be too harsh on them. Besides, the "unemotional sword girl" thing could apply to a huge number of sword girls in anime, I don't see why it's a big deal here.

I do agree that the male lead is an angry asshole though, and that the characterization of the girl he likes is pretty freaking irrational and annoying. Would have preferred to see the other guy survive. And yeah, panty shots of girls getting eaten by zombies is fan disservice.

I actually enjoyed the action in this quite a bit though. I really enjoyed the visceral, up close and personal nature of the fighting. Not sure if that's common in zombie flicks, I'm more familiar with zombies in video games where you tend to use a shotgun.

Black Lagoon OVA 1 = Awesome. Loved Fabiola's long awaited animated entrance. Just as enjoyable as I expected.

High School of the Dead 1
= Having been a long-time follower of the manga (and a rabid fan of all things zombie), I loved every second. My second most anticipated anime series in a long time. The fanservice is there, but it was in the manga as well. Frankly it's not more than any other series out there with panty-shots such as Rosario. I'm not going to sit here and write post after post why people should watch HSotD, but I would say if you like action oriented scenes (and don't mind fanservice) then to give the show a try. It follows the manga pretty closely, just like Black Lagoon has. If you're a gun-nut - and I know there are a lot of them here - HSotD has some of the best depictions of weapons I've seen since GsG or (again) Black Lagoon.

Takeshi (the asshole guy everyone is talking about) mellows out pretty quickly in the manga after he realizes how messed up Rei is in the head from the ordeal. I could go ahead and generalize some of the opinions in the before posts, but I won't do that and instead go with "less is more." The guy is really only an asshole at the beginning.

Hirano turns into one of the biggest badasses the series has to offer, so keep an eye on him.

Also, did anyone else notice the music from 28 Days Later at the final scene?

Yeah, it's really awesome for people who've read the manga. It's cool to see an adaptation that sticks so close to the original yet isn't too similar.

If he develops as a character than I think I can deal with it. I was kind of wondering if the author was setting something like that up, actually.

Is Hirano the otaku guy? I seem to remember him being mentioned in a number of blog posts regarding the manga way a couple years back, although I've forgotten what was said beyond him being an otaku of some sort (military otaku?).

Occult Academy's first episode did enough to grab me despite my prior hesitation with it thanks to Anime no Chikara's past works not hooking me. Pretty much, the show is a supernatural action-comedy where the female lead Maya doesn't believe in the occult despite the fact she has knowledge on such creatures and can do well at kicking ass. And she has reasons for her arrival at the academy and disbelief of the occult. If this grittiness can hold up for the show's run, this might be a surprise hit for me this year with how skeptical I was of Anime no Chikara's works so far.

Well, I wouldn't call the show a masterpiece by any means - I'd agree with you that few of the scenes were actually all that funny. Still, I felt that the show did compensate by having strengths in others areas (i.e. art/animation/music) to make it nice enough, although I suppose you could say that that only makes it a curate's egg.

Occult Academy: The first episode of this was rather hit and miss. It was a very rough ride due to the main character contradicting herself all the time and the show throwing in a lot of ridiculous, kind of comedic stuff during dramatic parts. Things did smooth out more towards the end of the episode though. Artwork was also a mixed bag, with some parts looking really good and others not looking quite so good. The show seemed to have some internal conflict with regards to it's art style at times; a few of the scenes leading up to the female lead's arrival at the Academy seemed kind of sterile looking. Though then again, that could have been intentional.
Speaking of the female lead, I'm not sure I agree with Ggultra about her not believing in the occult. I think the contradiction between her knowing exactly what's going on and how to deal with it during certain occult situations versus her total denial of the occult at other times is not so much her not believing in the occult as her hating it and wanting to destroy the school. She knows damn well its real, she just denies it for her own ends.
Anyhow, the series has some promise, but it also had a very rocky start. So I'll probably watch it a bit more and see where it goes (just like with a lot of the other shows I've seen this season).
I do have to admit that the series has a great "disclaimer" though. "This program is a work of fiction. Dead spirits, psychic abilities, aliens, UMAs, etc., do not exist. Unless you believe in them..."
Actually, one wonders if that statement is of more significance than it seems. Perhaps belief in the Occult is linked to the existence of the Occult in the series? That would be an interesting twist.

Or maybe I'm just reading too much into things. Razz

This isn't a current anime, but I recently picked up the 1994 OVA of You're Under Arrest in the bargain bucket at Forbidden Planet. It's really quite nice - lovely hand-drawn art, and it's something that the denizens of this forum would definitely enjoy as there's lots of car porn for the motorheads. It's also one of the most upbeat anime that I've ever seen - have you heard this OP? It's so relentlessly cheerful that if it was any more positive it'd be a parody of itself!

Kuroshitsuji II:
Spoiler:
I'm wondering if this show took a cue from Ga-Rei Zero when it came to viral marketing. For those not in the know, Kuroshitsuji was set in Victorian England and follows Ciel Phantomhive, a young boy whose family has served as the English Royalty's "guard dog" in underworld affairs. However, he's lost a lot and ended up making a pact with a demon (who took the guise of his Butler) for the sake of obtaining revenge. The first season apparently ended with Ciel pretty much dead and Sebastian about to take his soul as payment.
Anyhow, Kuroshitsuji II promised some new main characters, which is seemed to introduce with this episode. I don't really follow the show's fandom, but I imagine the fans were quite concerned about the new leads. Then we meet the actual "new leads" and well... the new kid is a freaking prick. And then partway through the episode, we meet a character who is quite obviously Sebastian in a trenchcoat and hat. He's also carrying a case which he seems to be rather protective of. Fast forward a bit and it seems the series leads are back and about to take their place as the leads in season two.
In other words, a pretty epic case of trolling on the part of the writers. Laughing
My one regret is that there was actually enough going on with the new characters for their to be a feeling of leaving things unresolved (that kid really deserves to be punished for some of the shit he's done) but maybe the new characters aren't intended to be complete write offs. (Unlike the supposed "main cast" introduced in Ga-Rei Zero's first episode, they weren't killed at the end of the episode.)

Re: Thoughts of Summer 2010 Anime Titles

Post by Piero on Thu 8 Jul 2010 - 18:04

What with my schedule lately and not wanting to work on writing too much while my back's been bugging me, I've had plenty of time to check out the new season. At this point I've seen the first episodes of most of the shows I intend to check out, so expect a round up/summary soon.

Strike Witches 2 (Episode One): The thing that people often make a big issue out of with regards to Strike Witches is all the panty shots, but while they may make me roll my eyes and wonder why the hell these girls don't just put on some shorts, I don't think they're actually the show's real weakness. The real weakness of Strike Witches -at least for me- is the character development. So far the series just hasn't done a very good job of fleshing out it's character and making me care about them all that much. This episode wasn't really an exception to that, in fact it's an excellent example of the problem. There were things about this episode that made me want to like it, yet it had some serious weaknesses when it came to the characters. The writers seemed intent on reminding the audience that "Miyafuji is a peaceful girl who wants to help" but the scene of her healing that bear cub strained credibility and the follow up scene with the bird kind of made the intention a bit too obvious. Then there was Sakamoto's hostility and attempt to prevent Miyafuji from coming along with her when she left for Europe, which kind of came across as being forced conflict.
To be honest, I had fun with the first season of Strike Witches in spite of how eye rolling it could be. However, I think if the franchise is really going to elevate itself then it needs to do a better job with it's characters. At least there's some indication that the second season may be raising the bar with regards to it's action scenes. The first season's action scenes, while not necessarily bad per se, seemed kind of lacking at times (action scenes in anime are hard to do well, so I tend to be impressed when a series manages to do something that's truly exciting rather than merely mediocre).
I watched the first season so I'll probably watch this one and see how it goes. Maybe I'll even get lucky and the characterisation will improve once the writers get a bit more experience working with the characters (it's a new studio doing this one, although I don't know if there's any differences between the writing staff).

Amagami SS (Episode 2): While I'm not hugely keen on the idea of a dating sim adaptation that resets itself each arc so the hero ends up with a different girl, the lead girl for the first arc is pretty awesome, so I've been enjoying this one so far. Whether I'll continue to like it after the show has reset itself a few times and starts dealing with that really shy girl we saw in the first episode is a bit question though.
Ookami-san (Episode 2): I tend to have a real liking for anime girls who seem tough but have a hidden vulnerable side. In fact, almost all my favorite anime girls are characters of this type. However, there is a right way to reveal such a character's more vulnerable side and a wrong way to reveal it. When you do it in a way that damages the character's credibility, you're doing it that wrong way, and unfortunately that's why this series did to it's lead girl with this episode. Rather disappointing.
Shiki (Episode 1): This is pretty interesting. It kind of reminded me of Higurashi at times, but seems to be managing to be distinct. However what with it being a mystery series I do have to wonder how well it's going to work when the series starts to actually try explaining things. Quite a lot of fiction with a strong mystery element starts to lose it once it starts trying to explain things more. Also, Megumi was a complete brat. I can understand that maybe she's not fond of living in some little backwater town, but come on...

Anyhow, I've now got Shiki off the list, so I can finally do a summary of my general impressions. Expect it soon.

Oh, I also watched Episode 7.5 of Sora No Woto. I normally consider Sora No Woto more or less okay or maybe a little above average, but this episode was pretty awesome. Drunk characters ftw!

I've always had a thing for Mecha Musume, myself. The idea of girls wearing bits of tank and aeroplane like clothing sounds ridiculous on paper, but when you see them drawn you can't help but smile at the genial cartoony spirit that they're made in. It's odd though - even though I like Mecha Musume, I've never got round to watching their flagship franchise, Strike Witches, at all - I haven't seen a single episode. It's always been one of those things that's been low on the priority list when I had other things to do. I think that I'll probably wait until the Funimation DVD set makes its ways across the Atlantic.

While we're on the topic, here's one of the more entertaining AMVs that I've seen recently - a Strike Witches alternate OP cut to "Paradise Lost" from Ga-Rei Zero. It's not just set to the music, either - it's an amazingly close replication.

The original for comparison

I started watching it more as a dare than anything else, but I ended up liking it, perhaps because it's pointless.

Sometimes, I just wish to be entertained.

And damn, that AMV works perfectly as an OP.

Robert -there's something wrong with that version of the original Ga-Rei Zero OP you posted. It's supposed to be 1:24 in length but the moment it loads it switches to 2:00 and the video and audio get out of sync. I'd suggest this version instead:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB8LbE0jNi8&feature=related

And yes, Paradise Lost is an awesome OP song. Ga-Rei Zero itself is pretty awesome to, but it's also very much a tragedy (which might not be obvious given the number of comedic clips from it that have been posted on youtube).

Anyway, quick round up report/summary:

Amagami SS (2): First arc features a pretty awesome girl. However, the fact that the show apparently resets itself each arc to allow the lead to go after a different girl is cause for concern, especially considering that one of the girls seems to be a painfully shy type.
High School of the Dead (1): Tense and exciting with some good action, but the characters did not leave a very good impression.
Kuroshitsuji II (1): After trolling the fanbase in epic fashion by pretending to replace the well liked leads from season one with new characters, it pretty much seems to be settling in for more of the same.
Occult Academy (1): Has some potential, but the first episode was pretty choppy. I'll see how it goes.
Ookami-san (2): Wasn't overly fond of the second episode, but overall it seems to be setting itself up as passable light entertainment in the vain of A Certain Scientific Railgun.
Seitokai Yakuindomo (1): Is pretty much a second rate version of B Gata H Kei without the hilarity that made that show worth watching.
Shiki (1): A somewhat interesting mystery/horror. The girl who was focused on in the first episode is a brat though. Could use a bit more time to form an impression.
Strike Witches 2 (1): First episode had some character conflict that seemed forced, otherwise seems poised to deliver more of what season one did. Not great, but passably entertaining if you can get over the more eye rolling elements.

High School of the Dead (2) - Again great, great fun to watch. I'm glad the second episode finally got to my favorite members of the ensemble with Hirano, Saya, and Saeko. It's shaping up to follow the manga near flawlessly which is great.

The one complaint I would have is the "boing boing" sounds they put on Shizuka. I know, I know, she has big boobs.

Queen's Blade is pure shlock. Even as someone who tends to like yuri elements in anime I'm not a fan of it. I initially thought it was kind of mildly amusing in a so bad it's good kind of way (I got to snark at the suggestion that a lack of armour was a character's problem -you'll understand if you ever take a look at any of the art for the series and see what it considers "armour") but it quickly became so bad I dropped it. Evidently there are people who like it though, seeing as how it got a second season and a positive review from one of the major English review sites when it came out on DVD.

Then of course there's Seikon No Qwaser, which I decided to pass on without even trying to watch it...

Sorry, I maybe shouldn't have mentioned it. It's just that I can be a bit of a contrarian sometimes and as soon as you basically said that if you could handle Elfen Lied you could handle anything, it made me want to point out the fact that there's a whole lot of shlock out there that has fan service as the defining point of its existence rather than merely a consideration. I have a bad habit of doing that sort of thing at times.

High School of the Dead (Episode 2): Largely seemed to reinforce my impressions from the first episode. On the plus side, the series is interesting and exciting, on the negative side... man is the characterisation awful. The guys improved somewhat with this episode thanks to the male lead being less of an asshole and Hirano being amusing enough that I might have liked him quite a bit if he had been part of a different group of characters under different circumstances. As far as the girls go however, one is a dumbass fanservice character, one is a walking cliche, and the other two have quick action "annoying mental breakdown" switches with one being annoyingly bitchy to boot.
The show is interesting and exciting enough that I'll probably keep watching, but it's also too hamstrung by its cast for me to see it being likely to be able to climb high on my favorites list.

The nurse isn't there for fanservice though - she's comic relief. The producers know how absurd her proportions are, that's why you get the 'bouncy-bouncy' sound effects when she moves somewhere.

I think that it's good that they have a few unsympathetic characters - after all, it's a fact of life that not everyone in the world is level-headed, courageous or altruistic, and we get to see how the developing crisis forces changes in their personalities and outlook, too. They may not be ideal models of Christian charity or suchlike, but that gives room for character development.

We may need to agree to disagree again here Robert, because the way I'm looking at this stuff is obviously very different from how you are. I definitely don't think the cast should be made up of perfect people, it would be boring if it was. My problem is that basically the entire cast manages to annoy me in some fashion either individually or in the way they slot into the bigger picture of the group as a whole. From my perspective they don't really seem to be portrayed particularly realistically either. So it would be kind of hard for me to honestly rate the characterization as anything other than what I did.

Since you've stated that you're not a big zombie fan I'll let you in on a protip: ALL zombie movies/shows/games have horrible characterization. Zombie media itself is completely off the wall and not to be taken seriously. Having caricatures/stereotypes is what zombie films are all about. That concept is also why all movies involving a war has a pacifist, a badass sergeant, or a pretty nurse. Turning off the brain and enjoying a show for the spectacle of it is great, if the person watching can manage it.

If you're looking for great characterization, then HSotD just isn't going to be for you. No need to rain on everyone else's parade by constantly and repeatedly pointing out flaws.

One of the things I don't like so far is how people are completely blowing up the amount of fanservice in HSotD. There really isn't much, and people who don't see that obviously haven't watched anything very fanservice heavy at all.

I really hate how easy it is to lose what you were about to post on this board...

rusty-spring wrote:

I've mentioned the characterisation twice thus far: once with regards to my impression of it from the first episode, and once when the second episode largely confirmed my original impression. That seems reasonable enough to me.

As for not raining on everyone's parade, that's a delicate line to walk. On one hand, I'm aware of what it's like to deal with someone who is convinced that their opinion is so righteous that they're entitled to use a public forum as their own personal bitching fest, and I don't wish to become like one of those people. On the other hand however, this is a discussion thread, and I don't think you can really say you're having much of a discussion if dissenting opinions are discouraged.

Also note that I've done commentary on about nine different shows this season and that High School of the Dead is not the only one I've had mixed feelings about. Note too that what I've had to say about the show hasn't all been negative.

As a point of note -your comment on characterisation in zombie media made me realise one thing, and that's that I would probably be quite as bothered by the characters if the show was more over the top and less serious. However it seems to me that the show actually does take itself quite seriously, which is great for conveying a feeling of desperation but not so great for making use of characters like the ones in it's cast. (Or at least that's how I see it.)

If I was specifically posting things for the sake of pissing people off or was one of those people who liked to get high on ranting and raging about stuff, you might have a point. However I am neither of those things. I am simply someone who happens to calmly state my opinions on the shows I watch, whether good, bad, or in between. In this case, the opinion is in between, I simply happen to be talking about the negative a bit more because it requires some explanation and because my comments there have generated more debate than the positive comments I made.

Now let me ask you this -is this a thread where a person who happens to have some criticisms of a show can state their opinion and have a reasonable discussion, or is it a thread where only people who express strongly positive opinions towards the currently popular show are welcome?

Fair enough, I was being sweeping in generalizations - my bad. 28 Days/Weeks Later is quite good. However, those Resident Evil movies...Plus, Land of the Dead? Razz

I don't know how long I'm going to be doing these individual write ups for, but at the moment things seem to be widely spaced enough to allow for it.

Kuroshitsuji 2 (Episode 2): A relatively light episode, but it's early in the season so that's not really hugely strange. Basically more of the same of what was in Season One. It's fairly enjoyable, although
Spoiler:
I'm kind of wondering what's up with a bunch of characters who seemed to have basically been dead at the end of last season suddenly showing up alive. Were they not dead, or is this set before the end of the first season? Also, the supposed new main characters who appeared in the first episode appeared in the OP for this one even though they didn't appear in the episode itself. Makes me wonder if they still have a significant role to play in the series rather than merely being fake new main characters for the new season.

Well that happens to be how you're coming across to a number of us, myself included.

Now let me ask you this -is this a thread where a person who happens to have some criticisms of a show can state their opinion and have a reasonable discussion, or is it a thread where only people who express strongly positive opinions towards the currently popular show are welcome?

If you don't like a show, you don't like a show. Say your peace - and your piece - and move forward. But continuing to criticize the show - especially when noting up front "I probably shouldn't do this..." and then proceeding to "do this" - starts to looks like trolling to some of us.

Some titles are really popular in this forum (and anime in general, evidently). You may not feel the same and you are entitled to your opinion, but when you continue to offer that opinion in response to every positive discussion, it starts to become "the turd in the punchbowl" and those folks talking about enjoying the show get annoyed that you're always there "raining on their parade", to use your own words.

You guys have one somewhat legitimate grievance regarding my behaviour on this board when it comes to the K-On incident. Even there however I wasn't so much trying to provoke a reaction as much as I was trying to deal with my frustration at what I considered excessively over the top praise for the series combined with the fact that my opinion of the show had recently gone from "I think this is so-so" to "this annoys me enough that I've decided to drop it." I wasn't kidding when I said I felt compelled to point out my point of view in that case (although I'll admit that doesn't really make my behaviour right). You may have felt similarly when you followed up my praise for the cliffhanger ending to Canaan's second to last episode with a really vicious attack on the series.

As for the rest, I think some of you people are focusing a little too much on a few particular things I posted without looking at them within the context of the big picture. You may have forgotten this, but I actually said good things about K-On on occasion, however muted and caveated that praise may have been. I've also said some good things about High School of the Dead (which I actually like somewhat in spite of my problems with the cast). I just happened to talk about an aspect I had issues with more because it really stood out and because in that case I felt a need to justify and defend my perspective that I didn't feel when I was talking about what I liked about the series. Also note that as I've said previously, I've reviewed a lot of different shows this season and HSotD is hardly the only one I've expressed mixed feelings about (this last point is one that I consider really important).

One last important thing to consider -I sometimes make note of trends that occur in anime that I watch, which is one reason why I can end up making note of the same aspect of series on more than one occasion. In the case of the first two episodes of High School of the dead, I had an initial impression that was confirmed with the second episode. So I made note of the initial impression in episode one and then noted the general confirmation of it in episode two. Had the initial impression proven to be majorly wrong (as my first impressions of episode two had indicated it might), I would have made note of the improvement instead.

Re: High School of the Dead episode 2: Custom modded nailgun FTW!

Anyone else tried Asobi no Iku Yo? On the one hand, it seems to hit every "mildly ecchi show about guy who get magical girlfriend" trope in the book... on the other hand, in the first episode we've been introduced to 1) an alien catgirl (with more to come), 2) A childhood friend character who works for an intelligence agency, uses advanced spy gear on the main character, and is a gun nut, 3) a teacher who is part of some alien-worshipping cult, and 4) a shy somewhat otaku-ish girl with glasses who turns out to actually be a special forces agent who takes out an entire ship of terrorists using a nanosuit.

I'm sure it'll be a trainwreck, I'm just wondering how interesting of one it will be to watch...

After reading what you had to say about it, I had to check it out. Smile

Asobi no Iku Yo (Episode One):
This is good example of how much worthwhile anime I'd miss out on if my brother wasn't a good deal more experimental than I am when it comes to picking fansubs to download. I know that the plot descriptions I read in previews prior to the start of each season are often poorly written and not very reflective of the shows they're written about, but I still have a tendency to discard certain series based off of them.
Anyhow, this show is cliched as hell, but also lots of fun if you can get past the excessive emphasis on the alien cat girl's excessively large chest (when are anime creators going to get the hint that bigger is not necessarily better?). Simply put, this show is crazy. The only real major criticism I have is the effect of the high octane opening action sequence -it was like putting the opening from one of the more serious Bond films at the beginning of a really campy spy spoof (okay, maybe that's not the best example, but hopefully you people get the point). Hopefully the action sequences foreshadowed by the ending of the episode are more crazy in the old school school action comedy anime style, with A-Team firing all over the place and copious amounts of property damage and general mayhem. Smile It would fit better with the type of show this is. (Speaking of which, the production values of this episode were surprisingly good considering the type of show this is.)
