Voting for Nirvana Crew in Match #1.
Re: Anime/ Manga Teams and Organizations Official Tourney Thread
It's officially Saturday night. Time to end the matches. The Nirvana Crew crush The Dollars 6-2 and the AMP beat Fairy Tail 4-2. Sci-fi vs magic is the name of the game for the next round. And now, let's start up the last set of matches for the Second Round.
Match #1 is a clash between groups with giant robots:
A mercenary company travelling with the 25th Large Scale Colonization Fleet Macross Frontier. Prior to contact with the Vajra, they were employed primarily to do reconnaissance runs that were deemed too expensive to do with units from the regular military. When contact with the Vajra was made, they were sent to the front lines, where they became a key component in the fleet’s defence due to the poor readiness of the regular forces. The company was known to employee two fighter squadrons: Skull Squadron, a human squadron led by former military pilot Ozma Lee that was equipped with VF-25 Variable Fighters that the company had been given for field testing, and Pixie Squadron, an all-female Zentraedi squadron equipped with Queadluun-Rhea battle suits that was led by Captain Klan Klein. They also deployed a heavyweight shuttlecraft/bomber unit and a small carrier/warship referred to as the Macross Quarter. The company’s personnel split upon discovery of a conspiracy within the fleet’s government, with some of their number going rouge while others elected to stay with the fleet, however both groups ended up playing a decisive role in allowing the colonization fleet to survive. Here’s Macross Frontier’s SMS.

Against...
Formed by the reckless and headstrong Kamina, this group of humans band together to reclaim the Earth and save it against the Beastmen and the Anti-Spirals with their act first, ask questions later rational of thought by piloting and stealing giant robots. Here's Gurren Lagann's Team Dai-Gurren.

Match #2
Full Metal Panic's MITHRIL is a secretive international paramilitary organisation that was formed with the covert support of several nations after the detonation of a nuclear device in Iraq during the waning days of the Gulf War in 1992. They are heavily involved in counter-terrorism and preventing the proliferation of advanced weapons systems. The operate from a network of hidden installations around the world and specialise in precise, highly coordinated surgical strike missions in wide ranging geographic locals. To do this, they rely heavily on both cutting edge technology and highly trained personnel. In additional to purchasing weapons systems from friendly nations, MITHRIL also has it's own Research and Development branch which has made use of the so-called so called Black Technology provided by Whispered such as Teletha Testarossa. Products of this R&D work include the Electro Magnetic Fluidics Control (EMFC) system on the assault submarine TDD-1 Tuatha De Danaan and the Lambda Driver system used by the ARX-7 Arbalest.

Against...
These young girl are gifted with magical powers and an allergy to pants. They fight the mysterious Neuroi aliens in their Striker Unit propeller legs, and grow animal ears and tails when doing so. When they are not out fighting aliens with massive guns, they are busy giving out fanservice to the viewers and exuding lesbian undertones. They are... The Strike Witches!

Voting will end either on Tuesday night or 24 hours after the last vote. Have fun!

Match One: SMS. The Dai Gurren Brigade's exploits have nothing on SMS' Variable Fighter engagments when it comes to sheer petal to the metal awesome, Gurren Lagann's use of galaxies as throwing stars in it's final battle not withstanding.
Match Two: Mithril. They're basically the ultimate crisis reaction force. They take care of situations that are impossible for other military organizations to deal with as a matter of course. They specialise in precise, highly coordinated surgical strikes and they're very good at them. Also, aside from the occasional traitor or loose cannon they seem to be good team players (in fact, that's one of the reasons they're so good at what they do).
Then again, maybe it's partly that as much as I'm a fan of Strikes Witches, I'm even more of a fan of Full Metal Panic.

Match One: Dai-Gurren -- Dai-Gurren have a battle hardened friendship that probably tops
almost all the other teams here. They'll risk everything, including
their lives, for each other...and be darn pround of it too.
What else could motivate real troops:

Match Two: 501st Strike Witches -- The 501st has shown a strong forged friendship -- they know they can trust each other.

Dude, is that picture real?
Anyway, I'm also voting Dai-Gurren and the 501st.
Re: Anime/ Manga Teams and Organizations Official Tourney Thread
Dai Gurren may have an awesome symbol, but SMS has an awesome anthem:
To quote one of the commenters: "Dude this is a bunch of drunk guys singing about girls and how screwed up their job is. Any military organization has something like it."
As for Mithril, an organisation of their size is never going to be as close knit as a tiny unit like the 501st. And truth be told the organisation at a macro level has some fairly serious internal rivalries. But realistically an organisation of that size would have those kind of rivalries, and it generally manages to function effectively in spite of them. That mission in Khanka was a good example of Mithril at it's best. Landing a pair of transport planes in the middle of a hostile air base during the middle of a pitched battle, rescuing four hundred civilians, and then getting the hell out of dodge before enemy reinforcements arrived from other bases was frankly borderline insane. The only reason Mithril was able to pull that operation off was that the various elements of the strike force each did their part when they were needed. Yeah, admiring a large organisation for it's ability to carry out complex operations with top notch coordination and precision is completely different from admiring a small unit for having close knit bonds, but that doesn't make it any less worthy of admiration, IMO.

I've been told on good authority that the photo is, indeed, authentic. The redesigned Union Jack was a Norwegian bloke's submission for an informal 'Redesign the British Flag' competition held by the Daily Telegraph - after his entry won the poll, it went viral and has been the subject of graffiti throughout Britain and elsewhere.

Don't believe in yourself. Believe in Britannia, who believes in you.
Row row fight da powah.

Voting for Team Dai-Gurren and MITHRIL.
Re: Anime/ Manga Teams and Organizations Official Tourney Thread
Match One: Dai-Gurren.
Match Two: Mithril.
Match Two: Mithril.
Re: Anime/ Manga Teams and Organizations Official Tourney Thread
Voting time is officially up. The Dai-Gurren Brigade crushes SMS 5-3 and Match #2 is tied 4-4 meaning the winning vote shall be decided by a coin toss. The lucky coin votes in favor of MITHRIL. This means that the match will be a clash between mecha groups and this concludes the Second Round of the tourney. The Quarter-Finals shall begin with the first half of the round featuring clashes between otaku panderers and military organizations that make use of cyborgs.
Match #1- The Battle of the Otaku Pandering
This school club was started up by the titular character's self-centered and impulsive actions to create a club to track down of the paranormal such as espers, aliens and time travelers where she drags in normal student Kyon and three other students. But unknown to Haruhi, the three students are actually paranormal agents who have been sent to monitor the girl due to her power to alter reality. Kyon finds himself having to aid these three students in preventing Haruhi from becoming bored enough to literally destroy the universe. Here's The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya's SOS Brigade.

Against...
This college club focused around the exploration of anime and manga turns out to be a club of otaku who pander to their own self-interests as a group of friends which presses the buttons of Saki Kasukabe whose boyfriend just happens to be a video game otaku involved with this club. Here's Genshiken's Society for the Study of the Modern Visual Culture.

Match #2- The Battle of the Cyborg Recruiting Military Organizations
On the surface, this organization exists to help provide rehabilitation to critically ill and injured children. In reality, it's a top-secret, counter-terrorist military organization that makes use of injured and sick girls as cyborg assassins. Each of these girls are paired as a "fratello" with a trainer known as a handler who is responsible for the training and well-being of their young protege. Relationships of the fratellos vary between being siblings to tools of the trade. Here's Gunslinger Girl's Social Welfare Agency.

And their opponents:
Public Security Section 9 was established as a search and rescue organization. Officially billed as an international organization, it is actually a counter-terrorist network and anti-crime unit operating in the Japanese National Public Safety Commission. Its operatives are allowed to act with or without government consent as they are almost unknown to the public eye. In particular, Section 9 and its members are among the best cyber warfare operatives in the country, and as a result usually end up involved in case relating to the internet, such as hacking and cyberterrorism.

Voting will end either on Friday night or 24 hours after the last vote. Have fun!

Match One: Society for the Study of the Modern Visual Culture -- Primarily for it's eerie accuracy.
Match Two: Section 9 -- Because they are more cohesive as a team while the SWA girls are more of an assortment of girls and fratello.

Match 1- Genshiken- The Society for the Study of theModern Visual Culture isn't being tugged along to their leader's beat like the SOS Brigade are.
Match 2- Section 9- Much as it pains me to vote against the forum favorites, I can't go for a team whose greater focus is on the fratello pairings and their opponents being one of the most well-coordinated and organized teams in anime.

Re: Anime/ Manga Teams and Organizations Official Tourney Thread
Voting time is officially up. Genshiken pull off an upset over the SOS Brigade 6-4 and Section 9 barely edges out the SWA 6-5. The first match of the semi-finals is decided. Let's jump to the second half of this round to determine the second match.
Match #1:
The men and women aboard this spaceship believed each other to be alien beings as both their home planets are at war with one another. With the crew consisting mostly of women pirates, the three men aboard are taken prisoner yet both sides find themselves having to cooperate with one another as a space phenomena drifts them far away from their home worlds and a race of Harvester aliens are trying to destroy their ship. Here's Vandread's Nirvana Crew.

And their opponents:
Attack Mystification Police Force (AMP) -- Silent Möbius
An all female police group whose entire reason for existing is to stave off an invasion from Hell (actually another dimention filled with "Lucifer Hawks" comprised of mysterious Rally Cheyenne, cyborg Kiddy Phenil, Katsumi Liqueur (the daughter of the most powerful sorcerer and sorceress), Shinto priestess Nami Yamigumo, ESPer Yuki Saiko, and cybernetically uplinked Lebia Maverick.

Match #2:
Formed by the reckless and headstrong Kamina, this group of humans band together to reclaim the Earth and save it against the Beastmen and the Anti-Spirals with their act first, ask questions later rational of thought by piloting and stealing giant robots. Here's Gurren Lagann's Team Dai-Gurren.

They are heavily involved in counter-terrorism and preventing the proliferation of advanced weapons systems. Match One: The Nirvana crew. Although they do have a major advantage in that I've actually seen the show they're part of.
Match Two: Mithril, although the two organisations are not very comparable. Mithril exists in a universe where teamwork and tactics are of pivotal importance while Gurren Lagann's universe is dominated by manly spirit and rule of cool. That being said: I find it impressive that in the later FMP novels Mithril's forces prove capable of beating enemies equipped with super robot-esque Lambda Drivers using conventional weaponry alongside teamwork and good tactics. (Which actually sort of reinforces just how different the two universes are.)

Voting for Nirvana Crew and MITHRIL.
Re: Anime/ Manga Teams and Organizations Official Tourney Thread
Much as I'm kind of glad of it given that I'm a huge Full Metal Panic fan, I'm actually kind of surprised that Mithril is doing this well given who they're up against.

I'm ending voting early as 24 hours have passed since the last vote. The Nirvana Crew triumph over the AMP 6-3 and MITHRIL squashes the Dai-Gurren Brigade 7-1. Quarter-Finals are now over. Let's move on to the Semi-Finals with the Final Four teams.
Match #1:
This college club focused around the exploration of anime and manga turns out to be a club of otaku who pander to their own self-interests as a group of friends which presses the buttons of Saki Kasukabe whose boyfriend just happens to be a video game otaku involved with this club. Here's Genshiken's Society for the Study of the Modern Visual Culture.

And their opponents...

Match #2:
The men and women aboard this spaceship believed each other to be alien beings as both their home planets are at war with one another. With the crew consisting mostly of women pirates, the three men aboard are taken prisoner yet both sides find themselves having to cooperate with one another as a space phenomena drifts them far away from their home worlds and a race of Harvester aliens are trying to destroy their ship. Here's Vandread's Nirvana Crew.

And their opponents:

Voting will end either on Wednesday or 24 hours after the last vote. Have fun!

Match One: Section 9.
Match Two: Nirvana. Why? A group of hostile enemies is forced together, works as an effective team, and defeats an enemy who has superior technology. In my book, that beats a team of folks who gather together willing to fight for a common goal.

Since almost 24 hours have passed since the last vote, I shall end voting early with Section 9 thrashing Genshiken 6-3 and MITHRIL barely edging out the Nirvana Crew 5-4. Here's the Final match of the tourney:
Public Security Section 9 was established as a search and rescue organization. Officially billed as an international organization, it is actually a counter-terrorist network and anti-crime unit operating in the Japanese National Public Safety Commission.
