Um...hello...

Post by pianoman on Wed 4 Aug 2010 - 12:00

I decided to go ahead and introduce myself after browsing around here for a few days. Seems like a nice community.

Nothing special to say, just another hopeless addict to the world of GG. I've read everything to volume 11, seen both seasons, you name it. I can't really say I have a favorite character - how can't you love them all - but gun to my head I'd say Claes. That'll probably change within the week.

No artistic talent at all, but I enjoy a spirited debate. Other interests? Well, gunslinger girl was my first anime and manga, so I'm always looking for more recommendations. Currently catching up on (and loving!) K-On!! I'm also working my way through the Touhou games.

That's all I can think of...

Welcome, pianoman! I'm as new as you but I'm here to recommend you some mangas since you asked for it:

-Eden: It's an endless world! (Hiroki Endo): 18 volumes. Great! With action and a good script, like GSG. Seinen.

-Berserk (Kentaro Miura): More than 30 volumes... Damn it, chapters are released very slooooowly, but it's great. GREAT! Ohh, and it's seinen, too.

-GantZ (Oku Hiroya): Lots of volumes too. Sex, violence, great art and an amazing story. You must read it! (The anime version can be bad for your health XDD). I think it's seinen, but I'm not sure :S

There are other seinen great as well, like Blade of the immortal etc etc. Feel free to ask anything Very Happy

Greetings ^^

P.S.: Welcome too, zarien85! All hail Triela! XDDD

Sing us a song, you're the pianoman, sing us a song tonight! We're all in the mood for a melody, and you've got us feelin' alright.

Man, Billy Joel is awesome.

Hope you enjoy it here. I never liked Gantz, the manga or the anime. There was no real point to it.

I do recommend Tenjo Tenge, though. It's ridiculous, but awesome.

As for anime, check out the ones currently being watched in the Summer 2010 Anime thread for plenty of recommendations.

Thanks for the recs!

Yeah, looking at Gantz, not sure if it's my style. Eden and Berserk look interesting though, definitely checking them out. I'll give Tenjo Tenge a look too, sounds kinda like Angel Beats after reading the premise.

WELCOME!!

No one here recommended it, so I will: Black Lagoon. Most of the regulars here are fond of it. One of my personal favorites is 'Noir', though it might be harder to find now since it's been out quite some time.

If you're interested in humorous manga, I recommend Excel Saga. A level of wackiness combined with situational humor and irony, and far exceeds what ended up in the anime.

Post by pianoman on Wed 4 Aug 2010 - 14:56

Yeah, I've heard of Black Lagoon. The anime was done by Madhouse, correct? I'll definately check that out.

And noir...I'm going to find that one, like, now. I'm definitely partial to anything in the genre! How are the two "sequels", Madlax and El Cazador de la Bruja?

Excel Saga looks kinda silly, but that's not always bad. I'll give it a try.

Kodoku: Thanks! Some of my friends had tried exposing me to really diverse genres over the years, trying to get me into anime. We're talking everything from DBZ, Bleach, Death Note and Elfen Lied to Hidamari Sketch. I liked some better than others, but I couldn't find anything to really grab onto. So I was just browsing Youtube, watching OPs, and I stumbled on gunslinger girl's. The title itself intrigued me more than anything. I wasn't sold until the third episode, but then I was full-on hooked.

But now that I've seen a fair share, I can say I'll watch anything with good writing/characters. To give you an idea, my other favorites would be Sola, Princess Mononoke, Angel Beats, etc. I kind of have a soft spot for slice of life as well.

I never got into Madlax, honestly. It felt sort of like Noir, but didn't capture my attention the same way. I haven't seen El Cazador.

The anime of Excel Saga starts out sort of like the manga, but immediately flies away from it, trending entirely towards wacky and away from the depth of story and humor that the manga contains.

If you are into character driven stuff, talk to Piero, he tends to stick around that kind of anime. He recommended I watch Mai-HiME (subbed), and I enjoyed that quite a bit.

El Cazador was a decent anime, saw the first 2 episodes on some online anime site I forgot to bookmark and ended up loving the series.

Though at $80 for two "box set" collections of two discs a pop... a tad on the expensive side.

But a damn fun ride that anime was. ^^

All three are availiable on net-flicks, though not for instant play. Sad, as I am curious as to whether I might take to El Cazador.

Hmmm...Baccano does look good. Seems like alchemy is a pretty prevalent theme in the industry. But Library War, now that seems like a unique, promising concept. Thanks!

And Last Exile...gonzo's burned me in the past, but the design seems solid. I'll give it a try at least.

Thanks, I'm sure I will!

FMA has intrigued me for a while, but I'm kind of confused. There's the manga, then two animes, right? Where would you start?

Solty Rei I hadn't heard of. Seems to share more than a few elements with GSG, I'll give it a shot.

You must see Elfen Lied and FMA! I almost forgot, but great recommendation Triela.

FMA has two animes and one manga. The first anime is very good, but it differs from the manga on the second half.

The second anime is exactly like the manga.

And the manga..., is brilliant ^^

Last Exile's worth checking out if only because Range Murata did the design work on it. The story's pretty good as well.

I think the setting and characters of Baccano are what make it interesting rather than the alchemy involvement. 30's prohibition and what not... for that reason it's one of shows I'd reccomend watching the dub of. Also set a bit of time aside to watch it in chunks. It jumps settings and time periods a lot which can get confusing at times.

The best way I could describe Library War would be "Farenheit 451... the anime". Ok, so not quite but it does make multiple references to the book. It's one of my favorites.

Solty Rei isn't bad. It could have been much better had they stuck with the darker theme all around rather than the single super-chirpy character among the darks. It had me sold on the noir style (movie/novel style noir, that is) until Solty showed up, and more than once during the series I found myself thinking that it would have been better had they toned her down some.

YuYu Hakusho is what got me into anime, having seen it on Adult Swim one night. At this point, I have to say that I've largely outgrown it. There are some really cool parts, like Hiei schooling tournament participants, but it's got that Dragonball Z drag-out action that I've come to dislike. Just get the on with the story already. The ending to the original manga was better, IMO.

Area 88 is one of the other ones I've never regretted picking up. A relatively short anime (certainly could have gone longer, story wise), the mix of action, jets, and story had a hold on me from the start.

Solty Rei is good, the character Solty is a bit too chipper though.

The first FMA series diverged greatly from the plot of the manga and ended very lamely and inconclusively. So they made a movie to wrap things up, and it ended just as inconclusively. Watch FMA: Brotherhood - it follows the manga closely both in art style and plot, meaning it actually has a conclusion.

Baccano! doesn't revolve around alchemy - it just uses it as a plot device. It's an excellent series and one of my all time favorites.

Last Exile is kind of weird, but it's still got an interesting plot.

G-man did a bunch of reviews on anime series you can find here.
