Scott Sharkey wrote: Top 5 Religions Offended by Games
In the wake of Little Big Planet's recall we rundown five more religions that should have a beef with videogames.

If you didn't catch the news, Little Big Planet has been pulled from store shelves on account of it containing some bits from the Koran (it's hard to tell who exactly that would have offended the most, and it's even harder to explain why. So I'm not.) It's not the first time that we've seen this, and it's probably not the last. Rather than run down the long list of every game caught in a controversy over religion, I decided to present the top five religions with just as much cause to be pissy with videogaming.

5. Satanism (Doom, Devil May Cry, many others)

Satanism only ranks in at No. 5 by virtue of the fact that there don't seem to be any honest-to-gosh Satanists in the world. Well, other than the Anton LaVey smart-ass variety who don't actually worship Satan. Their failure to exist is pretty much confirmed by the fact that they're not up in arms over how often we've been killing their favorite guy with BFG rounds to the head.

4. Buddhism (Whomp Em, Saiyuki, Dragon Ball, etc)

Buddhism gets progressively wackier the further east you move it from its point of origin, eventually becoming completely incomprehensible at about the point it reaches California. If there's one thing I've learned about it from videogames, however, it's that the proper practice of pretty much any flavor of Buddhism will grant you superpowers. Not enlightenment, but more practical things like flight and the ability to throw fireballs. Which puts it near the bottom of the offensiveness list because honestly, not only is that kind of awesome, but also the entire point of the philosophy seems to be not letting crap get to you.

3. Hinduism (Final Fantasy Series)

It's probably notable that Shiva, the many-armed god of destruction (and multitasking), is not, in fact, a hot blue chick who lives in an ice cube. The Hindu pantheon tends toward minimal dress and gender confusion, but it's still hard to imagine that portrayal going over very well.

Fun activity: In the games that prompt you to rename the Shiva summon, piss off whoever you like by transforming Jesus, Mohammad, or your religious figure of choice into a frigid, bikini-wearing Smurf.

2. Judaism (Xenogears)

Japanese RPGs in general and the Xenogears/Saga games in particular obtained their plots by tossing the Torah and some giant robot comics through a paper shredder before pasting them back together at random. They earn bonus points for the ultimate evil in the world being Jehovah himself. Double bonus for the fact that he turns out to be a broken computer that created human beings so he could snack on them later.

Fortunately, his one weakness seems to be getting punched by robots.

1. Christianity (Everything Else)

Beating up on angels while listening to unnecessary Catholic chanting is practically a genre unto itself. Castlevania title screens play a call to Mass, it's pretty much standard for any ultimate bad guy to pop wings all over hell before the final battle, and at least one Final Fantasy title has you beating up Jesus and his 12 apostles (albeit with funnier names). We'd be pretty hard pressed to pull all of these off the shelves.
I think we can pretty much say that the lack of offense taken is largely due to the sense of humor possessed by the aforementioned groups... still, I find the article funny as hell.

Funny we didn't find ISLAM as one of the offenders...

...oh wait, there's too much things they want to complain about...why don't we just blow stuff up as a form of our complaint? Laughing

...look at the top of the post, and the article. It was based on Little Big Planet's being pulled from stores on account of the presence of lines from the main Islamic text (the Qur’an, also sometimes transliterated as Quran, Qur’ān, Koran, Alcoran or Al-Qur’ān)... that being said, Islam wouldn't really be top 5. It gets off pretty light in the video game market. Most video games that have Middle Eastern terrorists in 'em avoid any reference to religion.
Also, as to #5... Nacht, you should write that guy a funny, if scathing, Email (there's already at least one comment there that rebuked the author for his uninformed dismissal of Satanism).

The writer probably doesn't realize (or perhaps does, but tries to deny) that the lack of
outraged responses from Satanists to such video games is merely due to the fact that we
refuse to waste time dignifying this stuff with responses - there's bigger fish to fry than
getting ourselves up in arms over these matters. I therefore won't be paying him any calls. Evil

Residnt Evil 5 Demo Impressions

Post by rusty-spring on Fri 19 Dec 2008 - 17:48

LoC978 wrote:Video

I've been having tons of fun with LBP. In fact, it's one of the few games I know of where it has been universally enjoyed by almost everyone whom I've gotten to try it. Including non-gamers, females, lil kids, Amish (ok I don't know any Amish people Razz )

In other video game news, I've recently been able to play the Japanese Resident Evil 5 demo. Now let me get one thing out of the way. I love Resident Evil games, and have played the previous incarnations - however, I am not one of those "hard-core old school nitpick" type of fan. I thought Resident Evil 4 was an excellent game, despite not having "zombies." So I'm perfectly fine with how the Resident Evil games have evolved.

Back to RE5, I thought the demo was a lot of fun. It plays very similar to RE4, and was surprised by the difficulty of the first demo level (though subsequent play throughs naturally lead you to certain areas/strategies that make it easier to beat). I had some reservations at first from all the hearsay/complaining, but now I'm only looking forward to it more.

Now the number one reason I loved the demo. I was playing the demo as couch co-op. Meaning my friend and I were able to communicate as we played sitting next to each other. Non-online co-op games aren't as popular as they once were, and seeing one of my favorite series move to this was awesome.

In fact, I find co-op the way to play. Unlike a human player (meaning players who understand ammo management a little Razz ), the AI is rediculously cavalier with it's ammo. You're allowed to swap weapons/grenades/healing/ammo between the two characters (Chris/Sheva) and while playing alone with an AI partner, I found I had to constantly supply them with spare ammo. That left me using the knife and melee more often than I wished, lest the AI get overwhelmed.

Lastly, the weapon diversity impressed me. More than I thought a RE game to have. In the demo you see a Beretta, MP5, Skorpion, and Sako bolt-action rifle. Other weapons include Dragunov, Benelli M3, Beretta PX4, Sig 226, USP, PSG-1, AK74, and the "Mad Max" Razz. Plus more than I'm too lazy to list.

Anyways, those are my thoughts on the new RE5 as far as I've seen. Feel free to ask me more if anyone has more detail questions, I just didn't want to write a bigger post than I already have.

Cover picture

It's really grusome and bloody. (chopping people to pieces bloody) But it's not scary at all.

I'm stuck on the first level already. ;_; Has anyone else played this game? I can't find a walkthrough anywhere.

Completed that game.

After the next few levels it gets a little repetitive but considering her increasing weapons arsenal...

there are many ways to kill a man with her weapons. Just don't stick with the slice-and-dice strategy.

I love using her as a charm to attract the guard then SNAP! Cut his head off!! Hahahahahaha!!

...although on a historical note, Nobunaga won over Takeda. Ninjas were originally political weapons of assassination but...oh well.

One question that struck me as a healthy boy and had experience with yukatas and seen kimonos...

...that thing isn't gonna' fall off, right? I mean her overall...

Re: Vidya games!!

Post by Whatface on Tue 27 Jan 2009 - 2:52

A couple of days ago, my 3 year old cousin came over my to house.

I got her to play Metal Slug 2 on my comp. It was pretty funny, watching her laugh as she mowed down soldiers one by one. She started saying stuff like "I want to kill person!", I thought it was freaking hilarious! Did she even understand what "kill" meant?

Obviously she died like 1 million times as she didn't really understand the controls. She kept on mashing the keyboard and didn't know how to hold down the damn arrow keys.

Anyway, I decided to see how she would react to Cod4. So I reconfigured the controls and made her in charge of pressing the shoot button while I did everything else. She got the hang of firing in bursts. Great! That was until she jammed on the shoot key making it a pain to avoid mowing down teammates. She squealed and laughed like a manic/psychopath as heads popped, blood splattered and dead guys fell down. I didn't think it was funny anymore... WTF HAVE I DONE!??!

Then I realized she wasn't laughing at killing people. She just found it funny to fire in full automatic. -.-
So I made a LAN server, plunked in a couple of bots and gave her a machine gun so she could shoot at the walls and floors for 30 minutes.

End

Anyone play video game mods?

Particularly, I like CoH mods and C&C Generals mods. SWEAW has good realism mods too...

Some of the best mods I play were Cold War Crisis for Zero Hour, Vietnam|Glory Obscured for zero hour, Generals: Rise of the Reds for Zero Hour, ShockWave for Zero Hour, NHCmod for CoH, EAW Extreme Realism for Empire at war.

Blitzkrieg II mod is a just a little too hard to be enjoyable at some point since the AI spams tank a lot (and considering it counts as one realism mod, destroying one with another tank as an American against German is a little...tough), MidEast Crisis is good...but kinda' feels like the original Zero Hour at some point while CnC: Holland is just plain gay, overrating the new faction and utterly ruining the entire game.

Currently am waiting for Vietnam|Glory Obscured Hydra release, Rise of the Reds v2.0, SST: Interstellar War for EAW, and MidEast Crisis 2 for CnC3. I recommend these mods to your leisure for anyone wanting to play something nostalgic--and a slight change, perhaps Very Happy

I kinda' like mini-mods at some point...but total convertion usually is my cheap get-away for a need of a new video game Laughing

...don't get me started on shooter mods. Hell yeah CoD:WaW Realistic German uniform! Mini-mods usually is better in shoter than RTS games Very Happy

I must say Baldur's Gate II and its various mods are quiet addicting.

also, while I already know the answer to this, CoH (released in April 2004) or CoH (released in September 2006)?
damn kids, stealing acronyms...

The WWII CoH! That thing with a realism mod turns the game like crack...you can't stop playing it 0_0

Anyway, when playing so, do you care about your men/infantry, or are they mere cannon fodder?

The Eagle

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,

depended on the scenario. I'm done with that game anyway. Played through the single player campaign, wasn't terribly impressed, uninstalled it.
...and I can stop playing anything.

I don't like those games, personally. I get to about level 2 most of the time before I give up Razz

My 3 year old cousin came over again. Just moments ago she was playing UT3 on my computer Razz.
Farout, my keyboard and mouse is now all sweaty from her hands...

We were playing on this lego map where almost everything was destructible. She didn't find the gore disturbing. In fact, when I pointed out to her that the piece of meat on the ground was somebody's arm, she loled. She found it even funnier when she got killed or killed herself (like 1 million times).

I then asked her if she liked Dinosaurs to which she replied "yes". Ok, so I used a mutator to spawn in some T-Rex and Raptors to make things interesting. ROFL, she got scared. It must've been the way that T-Rex charged at you and killed you in one bite. She ran out of my room, hid behind my chair a couple of times and said stuff like "No! Don't eat me!".

After a while, she said she didn't want to kill Dinosaurs anymore and wanted to kill people instead Razz

When my little sister plays my computer or shoots my guns they always seem to be covered with sweat afterwards i actually had to replace my mousepad a couple times because the sweat was so much that it was soaked and stained it also the sweat from her feet left a stain on the carpet why do little kids sweat so much

I'm actually a hardcore otaku who likes maids more than having three meals in a day and I only read books related to maids. Also, I only visit maid cafes. Of course I also collect maid figurines, I play games which feature maids and it turns me on so much that I'll wear the maid uniforms and jump in joy.

Just got SF4 for the PS3 and I must say all my misgivings that this would be another EX game were thrown completely out the window.

Also another plus is that when you beat the game with certain characters you unlock certain players. I was disappointed that I couldn't play as Sakura from the get-go, but after one play through with Ryu I unlocked Sakura by sheer dumb luck.

It's on now you online pansies! Once I get these combos down it's showtime...ON YO FACE!!!

Although I would've liked air-blocking.

*never looked back when fighting games went 3D*

...though the latest iteration of the series was pretty crappy, I still have the PS1, Dreamcast, and PS2 versions. Good enough for me.

speakin' of which, here's one for you, Panzer:

Oh mann... I finally picked up Super Smash Bros Brawl... I love it man! It is so good. I hated Melee. I still suck at fighting games (I'm an RPG girl) but I love the Subspace Emissary!

FUCK YEAR! F.E.A.R. 2!

Also about the ending... lol!

Spoiler:
Ghost rape?! I wonder if this would have bypassed the censors if Alma and Becket switched genders...

Gotta say, though, it was a complete mind fuck... to say the least, lol.

Hey, I've played the dart version of that. It's frustrating as hell.

Speaking of Tower Defence, has anyone played Defense Grid: The Awakening? I'm thinking of downloading it.
