Assassin's Creed in 3d, anyone? Wink

In other news, how'd you get a 3d tv linked? I thought you needed a HDMI+ethernet and HDCP enabled on the computer (which apparently is hard to get)?

my pc has a built in Blu ray,and has HDMI out,i was playing Crysis 2 which has a 3d option, you select the display options as side by side and the tv and glasses do the rest

Well, I had a Gameboy. (I used to cry over it when I didn't have one that time. *shame* bang head )
My PS1 kinda flew somewhere out there. My PS2 is outta action (broken controllers. ._.), but still functional.
PC, for online games.
PSP.
PS3. AWESOME though my games in this consoles is limited. (FFXIII, Blackops, Tekken...any suggestions? xD)
The games I usually play are RPGs; FPS makes me go get a headache.

Final Fantasy VII, VIII, X, XIII
Dissidia 012
Suikoden
Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria.
Ragnarok Online
Dynasty Warriors
uh...etc.
are the games I like Very Happy

Is it an Alienware, by any chance? Razz
I know the 4 series nVidia have HDMI+Ethernet and HDCP, so they can do it. But frankly, I don't want 3d TV, so the monitors are a better bet for me. Much cheaper Razz

@noble_gases wrote:The games I usually play are RPGs; FPS makes me go get a headache.

Same, I'd reccomend Kingdom Hearts, The Last Remnant (I don't think there's a console version of that, but it's on Steam), and of course, the Humble Bundle! www.humblebundle.com
Trine is supposed to be amazing (going to give it a try when I get my 3d glasses) and Splot thus far has been quite fun. I don't know about Shadowgrounds and Jack Claw, but I know that Frozenbyte put a heck of a lot of work into these games. Even if they aren't your thing, I'd be surprised if you didn't at least appreciate them Wink

Valkyria Chronicles for PS3 is easily one of my favorite PS3 games, let alone RPG, of all time. The artwork is beautiful and the story is wonderful. It's been out for a few years now so I'd assume it's fairly well priced. It is a turn based strategy RPG however, so that may not be your cup of tea.

On the subject of 3D gaming, I'll be honest and say that I don't really see the point in it. To me, it just seems gimmicky, and I can't really see how it would add anything to the game, aside from some sort of novelty value. One could argue that it adds immersion, but for me personally, all a game needs to be immersive is a good atmosphere through graphics, level design, sound, and music. Adding 3D to that just seems like tacking it on, perhaps to try and make up for a lack of atmosphere.

To each his own, I'm just not a fan of 3D anything, really.

Fair enough. Personally, I like it for the wow factor - there are some games in which the graphics are amazing, and with those it'd be nice to try it in 3d. Stuff like Assassin's Creed.
Then there are other games which don't have the best graphics, but are still amazing games in themselves, those I'd play in normal 2d - like World of Goo, or Beyond Good and Evil.
I play each game to it's strengths Wink

Sony executives have bowed in apology for a security breach in the PlayStation Network that caused the loss of personal data of some 77 million accounts on the online service.

Three executives, including Kazuo Hirai, the chief of Sony Corporation's PlayStation video game unit, bowed for several seconds at Tokyo headquarters in the traditional style of a Japanese apology.

It was their first public appearance since the worldwide problems surfaced in April.

Sony said account information, including names, birth dates, email addresses and log-in information, was compromised for players using its PlayStation Network.

Mr Hirai asked that all users change their passwords.

I really don't see how people can say Portal 1 is better. Don't get me wrong, it's great, but Portal 2 is even better in just about every way. The improved graphics and animation, the story, the music, the characters, the humor, and the new gameplay mechanics makes it all much more enjoyable. Saying the sequel is inferior all because of the "change in atmosphere" is a pretty lame reason, IMO.

Re: Vidya games!!

Post by Robert Frazer on Mon 9 May 2011 - 7:51

I do think that it's a legitimate criticism. Portal 2 is certainly less of an actual game than the first one - rather than setting you loose in a room of potential, the puzzles are straightforward and designed to carry you directly along to the next story set-piece. Also, seeing as it was that inimical facade which was key to Portal's appeal as GlaDOS's ranting echoes off of a cold prison, the change in atmosphere definitely does affect the character of the game. Portal 2 is bigger, bolder, brasher - and also a bit more knowing, self-conscious, and worldly. It's lost that exploratory singularity which contributed so much to the magic of the first game, it's now part of the web.

Portal 2 is certainly excellent, humorous, well-directed and engaging, but something was lost in the process. I suppose that that's the cost of growing up.

I'm with you Jaybird. I preordered Portal 2 through Steam so it was ready to go on launch day. I loved it. Absolutely loved it. I must have had the biggest shit-eating grin on my face when GLaDOS first woke up. Just as you said, the dry, witty humour, the updated graphics new gameplay elements, everything was just so well done.

Now then, that being said, allow me to play a little Devil's Advocate here. Personally, I'm not surprised that some people don't like it. Let's face it, the original Portal was so different and revolutionary when it came out, that gamers the world over put it up on a pedestal as one of the greatest games of all time. And when that happens, with anything, not just video games, unrealistic standards are always inevitably applied to any sequel project. For some, nothing the designers do will ever live up to their expectations. Just look at Starcraft 2, as opposed to Starcraft: Broodwar. There are undoubtedly still legions of fanboys bitching about how SC2 doesn't even compare to how good SC:BW was and is. It's an unfortunate fact that we all need to live with. All we can do is take those nerd-raging fans' criticisms with a generous grain of salt and be willing to judge a sequel based on its own merits and our own opinions on it.

And just to be sure we're clear on this before I go: Portal 2 kicks SO much ass!

I finally got around to playing the single-player campaign of Modern Warfare 2 this week - it's certainly a powerful experience and I feel it judges well the right blend of cinematic extravagance and diverse battlegrounds, and there were some stoically understated band-of-brothers moments as characters grab you by the arm in several places. The gunfights did sometimes became a bewildering wall of noise though, with the incessant rattling of shots. For the record, I gunned down everyone during "No Russian" without hesitation - seeing groups scatter was like playing skittles, and if anything it was a challenge ("stop flailing and staggering about, it's throwing my aim off."). What did affect me though was a scripted segment where you creep up on and knife a sentry from behind - seeing his eyes strain at me for a wire-quivering second before they went slack and rolled up did give me some pause to think "good grief, this is a bit intense.".

Re: Vidya games!!

Post by maverick375 on Wed 15 Jun 2011 - 21:17

I started playing through Darkfall III, and having been a fan of the first one for certain reasons, I found myself annoyed with the new one.

First Person adventure games have come a long way from Myst, even if the still-frame style interface is still popular, it's not as slide-show as it used to be. Immersive experience is no longer all that hard to accomplish, though doing it well enough to make the player truely blur the line between real and fantasy is something for the player to decide.

The object of my annoyance with DF3 was very very easy to see. It involves the very distinct line of letting a player become a character, and forcing them to a specific character.

IN most FP adventure games, the player enters the world as themselves, or perhaps as themselves with someone else's name and background. These items are often linked in the story-telling within the game, and is largely secondary to the plot. "You" were the person who found the linking book to Myst, not someone you are playing as.

In the original Dark Fall, you play as the brother (if I remember right) of some investigator who is looking into things that the plot revolves around. There are really no other details, and you are then left to be yourself with another name and background. If you're a fraidy-cat in real life, then you're that fraidy-cat in the game, because the things happening are happening to you and your responses are all that is there for you to feel.

In some newer games, including DF3, you are forced to feel as if you were some other person. Your reactions no longer matter, as the avatar you are forced into has his own reactions that are largely jerking your own emotions around. This was very evident to me, and I have to say that it destroys the illusion for me. I don't want to be some British, disgraced detective who jumps (visible via screen) at every noise, starts huffing and puffing at the least movement, and faints whenever the plot finds it convenient. The designers are attempting to instill a reaction where there may not be one.
In DF1, for example, you find numerous writings of people who all mysteriously go missing after writing that someone was knocking on the door. After reading a few of these, and given the ambient chill of the well-done atmosphere, I actually jumped when I heard a knock on a door in-game. This is immersing in a game.
Having the avatar jump at every little thing is not immersion. Having to focus to read a map or paper because the image of it is slowly moving around in your field of view is distracting and breaks immersion.

Sorry to go long here, but I had to vent a frustration. The fact that developers are breaking what is right in order to make something feel marginally more real is prevalent in many genres, but is nowhere near as obvious as my example here.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Glocks are not the shit. Glocks can fail the same as any other gun. I've seen it personally, and have even heard first-hand accounts of something as basic as a slide-retaining pin snapping, the slide flying off. Get over the obsession and buy what fits your hand, your wallet, and ability.

I finally had some time to finish of Duke Nukem Forever; and I must say...it was one hell of a ride.

However, after only the second level I can already hear the critics blast it as they scream frustrated at their monitors/TV's; "Tell me what to do(where to go) already!". In other words, most FPS nerds HAET puzzles.

Mainly, the games I'm looking forward to are CoD Modern Warfare 3, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition, and Halo 4.

Also, note that both the FN Five seveN and the P90 are confirmed for COD MW3. Henrietta approved load-out time!

I lost my preorder receipt from an EB games back in 2000. So I had to preorder it a few weeks ago.

Ouch, that sucks Nuke. My dad was in the same boat for a good...oh, 2/3 years. One Christmas he got CoD: World at War. Couldn't play it because the computer wasn't good enough. Next Christmas, he got CoD: MW2 plus a new video card. Still not good enough.

Finally, this past Christmas, I got fed up with listening to him complain so I conspired with my mom and got him a new motherboard and processor to go with that new video card, which FINALLY let him play those games, plus CoD: BlOps and MoH, which he also got.

Of course, while all of this frustration was going on, I was sitting with my $5K gaming rig happily enjoying all of those games as he got them. Razz

I used to play SC a ton when I was like 14. Ever played on the Snark Cafe server? That was basically the only place I ever played... good times.

And yeah, F.E.A.R. is pretty badass. I got it, the expansions, and 2 when they were on sale for $10 on Steam. Frickin' glad I did, too. There are few things more satisfying than completely gibbing a Replica soldier with the shotgun, or vaporizing them with the particle rifle... in slow-motion, no less!

This is what I think of L.A. Noire:

(Phoenix Wright-Courtroom Drama)+(GTA-Gunning down innocents)+(Heavy Rain-SHAUN)=LA Noire

Pretty solid game.

L.A. Noire does looks pretty neat. Let me know how it is, too, I'm interested in getting it when it comes out for PC in Fall.

Nah I never did much server-wise. Mostly played it with my brother and another friend of ours. I just remember there were endlessly hilarious ways to die. Good times indeed.

The shooty part was definitely fun - not as refined as most of the shooters I like, but the horror aspect more than made up for it. I would force myself to play in the dark - a policy that would as often as not reduce me to terrified sobbing. Why are little girls so terrifying?

The expansions were ok - I remember one in particular being alot of fun. But FEAR 2 just didn't do it for me. Seemed to me like they tried to make it a better shooter, but in the end it still wasn't as good as franchise like Gears of War or Rainbow Six and they lessened the nail-biting anticipation of fear that drew me in in the first place.

Fear 3 is really not so good,it ties up some of the stories from 1+2,but clearly leaves it open for a new story,in addition its quite apparent that this was designed for consoles and ported over, unlike the first two games that went the other way, also its designed to be played in co-op,its a lot harder solo !

Most of what I remember about F.E.A.R. can be summed up in one word: Railgun. That is all. *grins*

Also, LA Noire took a little bit of time for me to get into, because I kept trying to play it entirely straight, which doesn't quite work for the game's dynamic.

... Also, I straight-up SUCK at interviews. *laughs* You really DO have to pay attention to little details in the game, don't be afraid to explore crime scenes for details (utilize common sense - clues might be off the beaten path, but there's usually a reason for them to be where they end up). The game will try and help you out, but it didn't really feel like outright hand-holding.

All in all, it was enjoyable... I might have to re-rent it.
