I'm losing my touch (Ver. 2.78)

Post by Sintendo on Sun 30 Dec 2007 - 15:46

So yeah, I'm hitting a writer's block again. The usual remedies aren't working (i.e: :weed:, :drunken:, or snipe) so I thought I'd read a few books to help me get some ideas runnin' in my head...

So far I've read 4 bookc (Starship Troopers, 3 Cups of Tea, Welcome to the NHK, and Kino's Journey) but nothing still.

Anyone have any books they can recommend?

Joking aside, Legolas did have all the coolest battle moves in the movies. Wink

Hmm....good reads eh? Well I've always liked John Dunning mystery/murder books. George Carlin's books are FREAKIN' hilarious too if you like reading comedy/inane humor. I own all of them and are always fun to re-read.

Saved my sanity on many a plane trip those have.

Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. Kwaidan by Lafcadio Hearn. The Walking Dead by Craig Roberts. Alan Moore's From Hell, V for Vendetta and Watchmen. And, if you're really, really up for a wild ride - The Invisibles by Grant Morrison.

wish I knew. the last spark of inspiration I recieved was from finishing a Star Wars novel (Inferno) ... before that it was from reading Orson Scott Card's Shadow subseries (Ender's Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets... still have to read Shadow of the Giant, maybe that'll give me more inspiration)
...
as Tommy mentioned, some Tom Clancy books might help, but I've never been too fond of 'em.
...I've been considering reading Robert Ludlum's Bourne trilogy (though I heard nasty things about Eric Van Lustbader's continuation of the series)... that might be good material for creativity stimulation in modern-day espionage writing.

I just get into my car and drive out until the tank is almost dry; have a dinner, fill up and go home. It clears out the mind, at least for me.

I think most of the reading material I'd reccomend has already been stated by LoC, but one more I'd like to reccomend is Matthew Rielly (Scarecrow, Area 17). The apprent vendetta against the French in his writing aside, the action scenes are pretty good, at least good enough to keep you awake in an 11 hour flight.

I know this thread is old, but I came across your fan fic titled "The Lighter Side" today, Sintendo!!! It's sooooo freaking funny! I'm on chapter 6, but I had to stop reading to clean up the tea that I spit out laughing so hard!

Your writing would be perfect for one shot comics, too. Good stuff. You're very, very funny and creative!

Edit: I found you! Funny that you like the number 666. Triple fun! Even funnier that I said Wednesday is your day, and your fic is "A Day in the Life...." Must be fate that I was to read that joyous jewl of Liesel Life Lore. Your use of the word snazzy with a Corvette got me hooked, and I zoomed through 0 to 666! Seriously, very well written. I enjoyed your work. head bang

Books to break writer's block?

I read text books. o.O Or at least nonfiction. I read Freakanomics a couple weeks ago, and it gave me lots of neat ideas about how to structure peoples motivations. The book was all about how incentives can make people do really strange things. Neat thing to read if you want to learn about people.

Currently I'm reading a book on the history of chaos theory. Not sure where that'll take me, but it'll be fun (and its given me a summer construction project that I'm hoping turns out good. >_>)

I dunno. Anything and everything gives me ideas when I read. Try some of the novels by Philip K. Dick. Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep, the basis for the movie Blade Runner is one of his books. Or Harry Turtledove for a look at a masterful way to rewrite history and incorporate real people in your stories.

To Six - my above post was more tongue-in-cheek than anything else, but thanks for reading nontheless! I'm glad you liked 'A Day in the Life' - it's my first ever GSG fanfic, the first GSG story featuring an OC, and the second ever GSG fanfic on the Internet!

It's hard to do that on any fanfic without making it completely random and out of no where
