Season 1 vs Season 2

Post by Guest on Fri 14 Jan 2011 - 22:33

Which season was better in your opinion? Season 1 or Season 2?

I think that Season 2 was because it had more fighting and romance into it. Henrietta was more persuasive towards Giuseppe.
We also got to see Triela fight Pinocchio and Angelica gets back with everyone! ^^
Everyone in there had more plots and lines.
Rico just sniped everyone to death. I'm mad that there were bulletproof cars...

Season 1. So compelling with its tragic, muted beauty. Season 2 should've been of the same quality level.

Season 1, hands down.

Season 2 is closer to the manga thanks to Yu Aida writing the screenplays, but that they had to give up Madhouse for Artland for animation was not worth it.

The way I see it, Season 1 is better for its visual presentation and Season 2 is better for its plotting in the fact it has an ongoing plot, explores the pasts of several prominent characters (Triela, the Croces, Hilshire, Franco and Franca) that the first season never bothered exploring and further drives the grey morality by giving the Pandanians enough depth where you aren't sure who to cheer for.

I think the general consensus around here is that Season 1 is vastly superior to Season 2. Among that group is a smaller group of people like me (or only me, who knows) that despise, revile, and hate Season 2 or refuse to acknowledge its existence. I, and probably plenty others here, have written extensive explanations as to why Season 2 makes me feel like vomiting and gouging my eyes out. I'll be polite and spare you the rant though, partially because this topic has been discussed extensively in the past, ad nauseam , unless you're curious. Smile

Yes I suppose it did. A little good, a little bad. Mostly intolerably bad.

tl;dr: Season 1 > Season 2 / There is no Season 2

I’m going with S1 also. Aside from the crappy animation, S2 was just too upbeat. Gone was the “Tragic, muted beauty”, as Nachtsider so aptly put it.

It's not so unbelieveable to me that someone might prefer the second season...to each his or her own after all.

Season one was what attracted many of us to GsG but it does not deserve to be put up on a pedestal. It had its weaknesses and yes, there are some things season two did better.

Well Yu Aida himself has moe-ified the girls in the manga compared to the early volumes, so I can only imagine that the character designers for -IL TEATRINO- modeled the girls off the current manga style just as Madhouse modeled them after the original manga style when they were not moe-blobs.

Original/closer to the manga isn't always better, and I'm certainly NOT just going to obligingly accept Il Teatrino just because of Yu Aida's input. Someone somewhere once noted that a mangaka shouldn't have been given an trusted with an director's job. I'm not sure how much control Aida had, but it was far too much. Continuing the pattern of sticking closer to the manga and Yu Aida's input, Season 3 will feature Season 2's terrible artwork or worse and nothing but Petra.

Also, from what I hear, the OVAs (which I will never watch), also feature fan service in the form of a beach episode. So expect Season 3 to be have plenty of that too. So much for art.

There's also nothing to excuse the terrible animation of Il Teatrino, nor the terrible gun detail aside from a poor budget, which is never really a good excuse anyway.

It’s not really what you’d consider fan service – just Henrietta and Rico in swimsuits and Jean and Jose shirtless. Definitely nothing to get excited about.

I don't hate Il Teatrino, but I've only watched it once. I like that it focuses on plot development, but I find the tone of the first series far more compelling. Number one has a much, much better musical score, also.

Godot, I actually remember the OVAs (some of them, at least) as being some of the best episodes of number two.

They were a bit darker, what with the Enrica dream. A few additions to move the plot towards vol 6's.

i think that's the largest complaint I had about Il T- the lighter, more vibrant coloring.
Season 1 had the dark factor going on. Lots of shadows, sharp lines, and my personal draw, realism. The guns were specific and carefully, even meticulously, drawn. The eyes of the characters were realistic, with only the cyborgs having anything resembling anime eyes (and those were toned down). In those eyes they managed to capture the essence of what we see in real life people. A glance can tell you whether you're in deep shit or among friends, or even the amount of concern involved. The last frame above with Jose shows exactly what I mean.

I don't have a problem with season 2's story or character presentation (which is virtually straight from the manga). I have a problem with the art, for the above reasons. Lack of detail, softening of characters, overly bright lighting. And those fucking eyes. How the hell can you even shoot a gun with eyes the size of salad plates? I'd be worried about unburnt powder or brass being deflected into them.
What's worse, they did it almost to the same extent to the guys, and definitely to the same extent with Priscilla and Franca, removing Franca's hard edge and Priscilla's worldly experience. They might as well have been fresh out of high school, so chirpy and sickening they seemed, simply because of the art. And poor Ferro got the raw deal, ending up with somewhere in between the cyborgs and the guys.

Artists need to always remember: The eyes are the window to the soul. Something I'm sure was lost on the later firm.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Glocks are not the shit. Glocks can fail the same as any other gun. I've seen it personally, and have even heard first-hand accounts of something as basic as a slide-retaining pin snapping, the slide flying off. Get over the obsession and buy what fits your hand, your wallet, and ability.
