Workaday vehicles of the Agency

Post by Odon on Sat 5 Feb 2011 - 1:53

Here's a subject for thought, though maybe not as exciting...

What 'average' (for Italy) vehicles would the Agency use for stakeouts, tails and assassinations? The times when they're trying not to attract attention; when blending in is more important than high performance.

Fiats, likely.

I prefer the Panda and the Croma, myself. Also used a Peugeot 800 series minivan.

In my stories I've given the SWA a fleet of Fiat Fiorano's (Fiorani?)

One of which Henrietta, Rico & my Marisa crash into Claes' garden.

When there's more to haul there are a few Ford Transit vans in the motor pool as well.

The Pizza vans have to be similar to this Mercedes since many companies are making them. Its tall height makes it capable for an average adult to stand up and walk inside.

Honestly, that is kind of the reason Allison uses a Lancia Delta for her daily driver. It's Italian, priced like a high-end Saloon car, and blends in with traffic fairly well, but thanks to her own tinkering, can call up performance if and when she needs it. Unlike a Ferrari, the Delta is less likely to attract attention because a cursory glance at it will have people thinking that it's just another boy racer's toy and not really spare a second glance at it.

That one was Priscilla's. Still might be a good idea to pick up a half dozen or so for the SWA.

Marisa: Hey, I can reach all the controls on these. Finally a vehicle I can drive!

Okay...all stop...bad idea.

I've also given the SWA a small fleet of these for use as compound utility vehicles.

Kawasaki Mules...quick & easy enough to serve in a "golf cart" role as a runabout...tough enough to carry heavy equipment...4wd with enough suspension travel to run errands out on a torn up artillery range.

Galeb Ramsey (OC) the Palestinian groundskeper has one permanently assigned to him but the rest wait in the motor pool, available for general (adult) use.

And between Allison's petrolhead tendencies, Becky's fondness for pickup trucks, and Q-Branch generally mucking about, I can easily see these vehicles being misused for recreational purposes like 'mudding'. In fact, this might create yet another Top Gear Italy episode dedicated to off-roading and a bit of consumer advice, pitting a 4x4 Pickup, SUV, Kawasaki Mule, and one of these against each other:

Well, even though my characters technically work for the CIA, not the SWA, they do often need a nondescript vehicle. Murdoch's '72 Dodge Charger and late 70s vintage Jeep CJ5 tend to draw attention. Plus it costs a little too much to ship them overseas. Generally, he just picks up whatever can be had cheapest at the local car rental. However, sometimes they are in a hurry and Dusty has to "appropriate" something. This rarely happens anymore, since the last vehicle she "borrowed" happened to be a Russian T-72 tank...

Funny you should mention a dirtbike-- I was planning to have Adeline run a Polaris 4-wheeler ATV since she rarely gets and screentime on Top Gear Italy (but Marder suggests otherwise as I chat with him on AIM). We've been kicking the idea around in the chatbox today and this challenge would probably feature the following vehicles:

Kara: Audi Q7, then the Range Rover HSE Supercharged
Laine: Ford F-150 SVT Raptor (or even the Hennessey Velociraptor if she's feeling particularly bonkers)
Claes: A sensible Nissan Patrol, the kind with a proper transfer case
Allison: Japanese 4x4 Mini-truck (like in the video) with transfer case
Petrushka: Argo 8x8 Avenger 750 EFI Amphibious ATV
Triela: Polaris Sportsman 800 EFI 4-wheeler
Adeline: Polaris Ranger XP 800 side-by-side

One thing about these vehicles is that they can haul or tow, which is important, as one of the challenges involves hauling large game back home. Marisa might find herself struggling with a mere dirtbike.

Well, that's just the sort of screwball nonsense that would happen during a real Top Gear episode.

If I may offer a suggestion; one of the things I fear the Top Gear: Italy stories fall short on is comic misadventure. Things go far too smoothly. One of the elements that make the real TG:UK funny is that May, Hammond & Clarkson never get things right...their efforts always lead to disasters which they must overcome in a humourous manner.

For example;
Spoiler:
You mention large game. The original task may involve hunting, killing and transporting a large deer but the girls fail to get permits to hunt in their filming area so a full sized beef or hog carcass is substituted. Facing the difficulties you allude to, Marisa chains her carcass her bike's rear subframe but sets it too close to the tire. As soon as she takes off the carcass is shredded by her own knobbies, spraying Triela behind her with chunks of raw meat.

That's how TG:UK would do it.

That said; I'm not trying to insinuate Marisa into this. While I do consider her "community property" and free to anyone who has use for her, she really isn't a good fit for TG:I. If you need a young cyborg for a cameo it's much better to slip in more recognizable canon girls like Rico or Henrietta.

It's because our budgets are too big. So we have things like "Mid-Engined Italian Supercars for the Price of a Second-Hand Business Jet" and for the "Shed Car Challenge" the makes are companies like Pagani, Koenigsegg, Saleen and Gumpert. Razz

I'd love to do a proper "cheap car challenge" with actually cheap cars. I think the closest we came was Kara's Alfa 75 with the overdone turbo that kept overheating, but when you think of things like Jezza's 928 or May's Uracco, it doesn't come close.

I also want to do the 24 hour race story Alfisti came up with.

One of the elements that make the real TG:UK funny is that May, Hammond & Clarkson never get things right...their efforts always lead to disasters which they must overcome in a humourous manner.

If you want disaster, I think the upcoming Sleeper challenge is ripe for it, at least in regards to Allison, Kara and Laine, who had their Q-ships custom-built instead of factory-purchased like Triela, Claes, and Petrushka. And really, while the off-roading challenge sounds like the usual hooey, it is important to note that none of the presenters actually have any experience in off-roading like what will be in store for them. How they handle it is something I have to make interesting, if not at least funny.

I think Allison may end up 'Reliant Robin-ing' her minitruck more than once, but the upshot is that it's one of the lightest vehicles present.

As it relates to styling...perhaps not. As it relates to 4-wheel drive, ceramic brakes and direct injection diesels I'd say they've got plenty. They also tend to burst into flames less than their Italian competition.

So, I see Hyundai's developing a 10 speed auto box... surely there comes a point where it'll spend more time shifting than driving and you may as well just drop a CVT in the thing and be done with it? Not to mention the extra weight and space required.

Indeed. My Lexus had an eight-speed slush box, but it spent most of it's time in 1st or 8th. But then, because my Lexus had eight speeds, everyone else in the ultra-luxury world needed to have eight, as well. Razz

ZF developed a 9-speed model, so I'm guessing since Hyundai is putting this in their top-end Equus and Genesis lines, it's likely more about bragging rights. Ditto Porsche releasing a 7-speed manual with the new 911.

I've still yet to figure out how that works... I guess they must have hung the extra gear off the end of Second (if it's first) or Six (for Seventh), because I just can't see how you could hope to accurately hit what you were aiming at with more than six speeds in an H-pattern. I guess you could also put first on a dogleg, with a bit of extra resistance in the gearlever to get to it, like selecting reverse in some six-speed boxes.

I have to admit I'm a little perplexed as to why the automakers are investing so much effort into umpteen-ratio transmissions when this will all likely become obsolescent technology over the next 15-20 years.

Like it or not, direct electric drive seems to be the way of the future, power being provided by a hydrogen fuel-cell or a gasoline/diesel engine powering a conventional generator. Having an independent motor for each wheel is the simplest way to incorporate traction control and stability control...it also negates the need for a complicated differential.

Given that an electric motor produces constant torque from rest to redline there is simply no need for a gearbox anymore.

Speaking of everyday cars, I handed back my rental Toyota Camry today... with no great amount of emotional trauma either I might add.

That said: I really can't find anything bad to say about it... it certainly wasn't the hateful box of misery I found the Yaris sedan to be (seriously, the only thing I wanted to do after getting in was to get out again: ASAP). That said, I can't find anything particularly interesting or standout to say either. Ok, so I still have no idea what the front wheels were doing, I couldn't see the corners to reverse park and didn't get along with the auto gearbox (but I've not yet been able to find a slushbox I could get along with... and that includes the rather nice ZF units in the Disco 4, BMWs and whatever Merc is using right now). However, once I got used to the extra bulk it was resonably easy to place on the road, it was resonably quiet and resonably comfortable. It didn't smell great inside but I'm not certain if that's a Toyota thing or a rental car thing...

...and lets be honest here: if you really want to blend in it'd be difficult to think of a less conspicuous car.

At the end of the day it's a good car to get people who don't like and have no interest in cars from A to B and, taking it from a design perspective rather than an enthusiasts perspective: the designers can be proud of that... because taking that step back is bloody difficult at times.

It's a perfectly competent appliance... hell, mine was even white like a washing machine.

Here endeth Alfisti's short car review about everyday vehicles.

Camrys are a rental fleet staple here in the US, I've driven way too many of them. The newest one I've sampled (a 2009) had a decent interior, and did well on the highway but the handling was atrocious...soft to the point of feeling wobbly & unstable.

Its direct competitor (here in the US at least) is the Ford Fusion, which did not have as convenient an interior (lots of switches in awkward places) but its handling and braking prowess blew the Camry out of the water. Seriously, the brakes on the Fusion were awesome.

I sampled a Yaris hatchback in Aruba and found it well suited to the dusty, wind-swept island. On tight, undulating roads with unpredicatable traction it was small & light enough to toss around like a rally car. Had I driven it on the highway or in a large city my opinion might be different but mine was just the right thing for the task.

To be honest I didn't really test the brakes out that much, my driving style doesn't tend to involve a lot of heavy breaking.

As to the ride and handling, I found the Camry not too bad. It was certainly no sports car and definately not what you'd call "chuckable" but it was competent. I think Australia might get a slightly different suspension tune to the US or other parts of the world. I know Kia does a specific setup for here so it wouldn't greatly suprise me if Toyota did as well. Generally as far as I know, Aussie cars tend to get a slightly firmer setup.

Ah, that might be the difference then: I was using it to commute between Newcastle and Raymond Terrace (small down about half an hour's highway drive north). The highway manners weren't the only thing that bugged me though, I know the Camry doesn't have a particularly special interior, but it does a good job of hiding how cheap it is. The Yaris just felt cheap and nasty: hard plastics in all the wrong places and so on. Probably didn't help that it had a decidedly average auto-box in it either.
