There's a good reason most of the older girls try to get out of joint missions with the carabineiri...

There's also the issue of fitting the tool to the purpose... those little Carabinieri egg cars are for urban patrol duties, not trying to chase things down on the open road. Evidently they're considered practical for the purpose they're being used for.

As for the Lamborghinis, I believe Lamboghini has donated cars to Italian police forces which I guess tend to use them for PR (a major duty is apparently transporting organs for transplant). Although I understand some German police with responsibility for policing the autobahn have some pretty high performance hardware at their disposal.

Photographed this one in Roanapur...I mean Pattaya yesterday. Apparently the Thai police chase speedsters in pickup trucks! The words on the windshield are HIGHWAY POLICE SPEEDER UNIT...in English. Mind you, sounded like a powerful engine under the hood, so maybe there's more here than meets the eye.

Just in time for the Christmas holidays, the Queensland Police have rolled out their new highway patrol cars...

...built by HSV and tuned up for the force.

Perhaps not quite as impressive as the Lambos, but enough to make me think I'll be making judicious use of the cruise control on the run back to Brisbane.

Oh, and did I mention their new numberplates:

Just in case you didn't get the message the first time around. Ok, so it's sold as a politically correct reminder to not speed, drink and drive, fail to wear a seatbelt or drive tired... but that's all in very small type where you can barely read it.

That's just the promotional photo from Ford. Individual police departments can choose to paint theirs any way they like.

In the late 80's Pennsylvania State Troopers had unmarked red Mustangs...

...which led to a great game for a friend of mine whose personal Mustang had the same paint job. (McDonnell, you might want to cover Allison's ears for this) He knew he could not outrun a Corvette out on the open road, so he got a pair of cop-style mirrored sunglasses and tucked his long hair up under his cap.

Corvette drivers would slow when they saw him in the mirror, fearing an unmarked police car. He'd pull alongside, look straight at them...then whip off his cap to show he wasn't a cop, and drop the hammer. He had 4.11 gears in the rear-end, which ruined his top speed but gave him awesome acceleration, which the Corvettes could not touch. He'd leave them in the dust every time.

Okay, you can uncover Allison's ears now.

More than paint though, they actually went out and did some mild changes to the bodywork, like changing that giant, distinctive grille.

Though, funny you'd mention that car...

I should point out that the black-and-white police car is a Japanese Police Honda NSX, not a Chinese one.

So the number on the side no longer represents engine displacement in cubic inches like the Boss Mustangs?

After having sat in one, I can stipulate that whatever their performance values (which ain't horrible, but is inferior to the new Monaro... I mean Caprice), the new Ford Interceptors suck wombats. Too small, too cramped inside. The engine is a technician's nightmare (and our mechanics don't NEED any more excuses to put off work)

Makes you wonder why Ford won't share their Aussie vehicles with the US. Considering that fuel is going to actually go down in price this year, I can imagine that there would be a fair bit of demand for cars like what FPV and HSV make.

Yeah, to the best of my knowledge the Falcon is only sold in Australia, which is a pity as it would give Ford something to go head to head with the Commodore derivatives with.

Unfortunately, the impression I get is that Ford USA's policy until very recently has been quite compartmentalised; US vehicles had to be designed and manufactured in the US... hence why (and correct me if I'm wrong here) the Euro Focus etc never made it Stateside until recently. Sadly that means the Falcon is currently on its last legs. It hasn't had the development dollars poured into it its Holden competitor has enjoyed, so unless Ford is willing to make a similar investment it's future is looking pretty bleak.

I was under the impression it was that the Ford of Europe vehicles were significantly more expensive so their MSRP would have been inordinately high in comparison to competitor's models.

When Alan Mulally was lured from Boeing to become CEO, he worked to make the European models cost-effective to import.

Sighs...

about thirty years ago, Jeep made a vehicle solely for Australian export called the CJ10 (not to be confused with the J10, the fullsize pickup). It had a body made by AM General mounted on a pickup frame. Brutal, marvelous vehicle. I got to drive it, but only on Jeep property - it couldn't be licensed in the US.

I'll admit I'm struggling with how developing a new model for a single market, with all the costs that entails and manufacturing it with western labour costs can be more cost effective than importing an existing model manufactured for export markets in places like Thailand... That said, I've not read enough into the situation to form a properly grounded opinion so I'll have to take your word for it.

However that still doesn't explain why not utilise a global rear-wheel drive platform for those cars which require it... either based on the Falcon or on some US side development and, unlike say the Mustang the Falcon at least has such modern conveniences as, you know... independent rear suspension.

I dunno. Maybe I'm just jaded, but part of me can't help but think, whatever the official reasoning, there was a certain amount of good old fashioned "not made here" syndrome going around for awhile there in the Ford management.

It depends on how large the market is. Honda makes different models of the Accord and Civic for the US then they do in Europe (the US Accord is larger), though Honda did later import the European model as the Acura TSX.

Part of it is cost. Ford has noted that adding IDS to the Mustang would have added $5000 to the MSRP. That being said, the 2015 Mustang will have independent rear suspension across the line.

Many older lines (like the Fox platform that has underpinned the Mustang since 1978 or the Panther than underpinned the Town Car / Crown Victoria / Grand Marquis) are fully depreciated and that helps reduce production costs and allow these models to remain profitably in production at lower sales volumes.

Heh... well I guess America is a massive, consumerist society Razz If they're the two cars I'm thinking of then we get both Accords over here as well, marketed as the Accord and the Accord Euro respecively... though the former is generally considered as having a target demographic which requires a blue rinse for entry and the latter usually has its name predecessed by the words "accountant spec" Razz It's more expensive, but generally considered the better buy.

I will admit I had forgotten (or underestimated, or a bit of both) just how bottom-dollar driven the US market could be.

Considering the congestion in China, I would like to point out that the Chinese Police Supercar (Porche 911, y/n?) is most likely simply there to demonstrate that China is "powerful".

I don't see HOW it does that, exactly, but then again, China's consumerism is worse than the US's.

Re: Best of Police Cars

apparently UK police forces can now order a factory built Volvo V70 police car

The Volvo V70 police car was designed and developed in conjunction with the NAPFM, National Police Improvement Agency, Police Federation and users. Volvo will build the fully equipped V70 estate on the standard production line in Torslanda, Sweden, offering a turn key solution to the British Police Force.

Volvo believes this is the first time a fully equipped frontline UK police car has been available to factory order and is confident of immediate interest from authorities who have been used to a car spending several months having special kit fitted before being able to put it into service. Customers can expect delivery of their Volvo V70 Turn Key police car within 12-14 weeks from their initial order.

All elements of the new Volvo V70 Turn Key police car are factory built for UK forces from the battenburg livery and lightbar to all radio prep/wiring and a master control panel. The factory fitted options list reads slightly differently to usual and includes the VASCAR speed detection system, a police surveillance video camera and a two dog cage.

This is added to Volvo’s already unique tried and tested police chassis, which includes self levelling suspension and special 17.5 inch brakes and reinforced alloy wheels which further improve stopping distances and brake disc cooling.

With Duty of Care being at the top of the wish list for all police authorities, having a car that is fully designed, built and supported in the aftermarket by the manufacturer is another huge plus point for the Volvo V70 Turn Key.

Volvo first announced its intentions to design and build the ultimate Turn Key police car at last year’s NAPFM conference.  Now, 12 months on, after taking into consideration the wish lists of all UK police authorities, Volvo has delivered the complete car with a range of petrol, diesel and FlexiFuel engines.

“Volvo has worked with its partners to deliver what police forces want from a typical patrol car and we are confident it will be a big hit. Being able to factory order a car and know it will be ready for immediate action when it arrives is a significant benefit and it also addresses the Duty of Care commitments of police authorities. We believe this car takes the UK police market to a new level,” said Sarah Tottle, Volvo UK’s special vehicles manager.

It's shorter and lighter than the old Crown Victoria so probably fairly well, and lets face it if you can drive on UK roads you can get it around most US roads with ease !
edit: found the third gen specs for the Volvo
