Top Gear Italy Episode/Challenge Repository

Post by MP5 on Tue 29 Mar 2011 - 21:38

So in order to prevent these ideas from festering in my head for too long and possibly forgetting about them, I have decided to post a brief list of episode and challenge ideas. This list can be updated and amended if anyone has a suggestion for the girls of Top Gear: Italy.

Current Ideas On-Shelf

"Old-School Cool"
The girls take a trip into sports car and supercar history with a selection of highly-collectible, highly-valuable classics from the late 1960's to early-1970's, including the 1972 DeTomaso Pantera GTS, the 1967 Toyota 2000GT, the 1972 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona, the 1971 Jaguar E-Type Series III 5.3 V12, the 1972 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV, and the 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe with a 427ci Big Block Tri-Power V8. The six presenters take their classic vehicles (a combined value well north of $500,000 USD) from Milan, through France via the Col de Turini, and finally down to the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo, Monaco for the annual Social Welfare Agency Charity Ball, its first outside of Italy. Along the way, the girls get to understand their classic supercars as they put them through their paces and educate viewers on the history of their chosen steeds, leaving no detail un-spared, before preparing to arrive at the Hotel de Paris with a handsome young gentleman each as their companions into the ball.

"Cosworth Cavalcade"
In this episode, the girls take a gaggle of cars designed, tuned, or otherwise breathed on by legendary Formula 1-famous high-performance engineering company Cosworth and put them to the test as they travel to the world-famous Nürburgring Nordschliefe circuit for some hot laps to see how the performance of Cosworth's engineering prowess has changed over the years. included in this diverse selection is the 1976 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega, the 1975 Ford Escort RS1800, the 1987 Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth, the 2002 Ford Focus ST170, the 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16, and the extremely-rare 2010 Cosworth Impreza STI CS400.

"Three-R Classic Car"
This episode-long challenge pits the six presenters against a budget of €15,000 per pair to restore three classic cars from the 1960's and 70's. Once restored and/or modified to their liking, each pair will take their vehicle on an amateur road rally to test the fruits of their labor against the clock, before attempting to resell their vehicles at a Concours event at the end of the rally. The six girls will be working on a 1972 Ford Escort RSMexico (Allison and Petrushka; powered by a Cosworth-tuned Ford Focus ST170 Duratec engine), a 1963 Austin Mini Cooper S (Claes and Triela; modified with a Twin-cam engine), and a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS (Kara and Laine; bored and blueprinted 302ci V8 from a Z/28)

I'm working on a variation of Episode 07x03 with a supercars to a super bridge run, though in this case it will be the Straight of Messina Bridge.

Things have gone way too well for our girls, and their usual budgets would make the BBC faint dead away, so rusty-spring and I have been kicking around some "mayhem-type" episodes involving actually cheap cars.

One idea was Laine and Kara duking it out in a 1974 Fleetwood Talisman vs. 1977 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith II LWB in the "Land Yacht Challenge".

And after watching the "Italian Supercars on a Mondeo Budget" challenge, I came up with a “The Not What You Thought Challenge” where the girls hear they will be taking a road-trip in a collection of Italian, British and American sports cars, but when they arrive, their expectations and reality collide head on.

Kara, expecting a Ferrari, does indeed get one. Just instead of a 458, it's a 208 GT4 with a 2.0 liter V8 putting out 180 hp. Claes fairs a bit better, as the 2.0 liter V8 in her Lamborghini Urracco P200 puts out 182 hp. Still a far cry from the 560hp the Gallardo LP560/4 she was hoping for.

Laine, of course, gets a Corvette. A 1975 Corvette with an emissions-choked 350ci engine that can't even make a half-horsepower per CI (165hp).

Not quite sure what Allison gets, other than it will be British. I'm thinking expect an Jaguar XK-R and ends up with a Rover SD-1. Hey! Both companies used to be part of British Leyland, so close enough, right?

Refresh my memory-- was it the Sierra Sapphire you owned, or the original whale-tail one?

'86 3-door...same color as this one. Mine didn't have a sunroof though.

I honestly wish I'd remembered the later 4-door model (the Sapphire to which you allude) when I was chosing Elio's car. I wanted him to have a 4-door...the Sierra Sapphire Cosworth would have been a good fit for him.

More ideas:

Top Gear: Italy Petrolhead Picnic: On a beautiful summer's weekend, the presenters decide it would be nice to head to the Italian Riviera for a picnic on the beach. However, instead of simply throwing sandwiches and bags of crisps in a wicker basket and swanning off to their destination, the girls will be cooking a hearty full-course meal en route. Their cooking utensils? tinfoil, some duct tape, and a selection of lightweight convertibles and roadsters that run the gamut from classic, to contemporary, to the current. With nothing more than their right feet, the heat of their engines, and miles of tarmac, the girls will attempt to cook an on-the-road gourmet meal that will (hopefully) be properly-cooked and perfectly ready by the time they reach their destination. But they must be careful-- engine mishaps may add some unwanted 'flavor' to their cooking or possibly reduce what was once a delicious entree to little more than an unrecognizable lump of carbon. (Cars TBD)

It Takes Two, Sometimes Three (Wheels): After watching Easy Rider, listening to Steppenwolf's Born To Be Wild and listening to Adeline's dream of going to a massive motorcycle rally (which is essentially unheard of in Italy), Allison, Adeline, Laine, and Triela hop across the pond to make a journey to the annual Sturgis Motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. However, while Adeline and Laine will gladly do the whole thing on a bike, Allison and Triela would appreciate formats a little more familiar to them-- gas/brake/clutch pedals, hand-operated shifting mechanisms, and a round thing called a steering wheel. Starting in Dallas, Texas, the four make their way north to Sturgis atop a KTM 1190 RC8R and BMW S1000 RR and in the cockpit of a Campagna T-Rex and a Morgan-licensed Ace Cycle Car. With luck, they'll get to Sturgis and enjoy themselves on the way up without too much helmet hair, saddle sore, and bugs in their teeth.

Actually Laine despises all those hybrid cycles and trikes with two wheels in front, one in back. She a traditionalist and thinks they're ridiculous looking. As a secret American - she wants a crotch rocket Razz. I've always fancied Laine having a BMW S1000 RR. Preferably in neon lime green. Laughing

For my end of Top Gear Italy, I have a Cheap Car Challenge set up. No specific theme to it, simply a group of cars that are complete dogs. The vehicles are a 1991 Nissan 300ZX, 1976 Mustang Cobra II, and a 1992 Fiat Croma.

Both fantastic track bikes but do you have any idea what a torture rack either of them would be for an 1100 mile ride?

Common sense and practicality aren't Laine's strong suit (At least not TGI's Laine. I consider TGI another alternate universe for my OCs.). Plus, a titanium alloy skeleton and bullet proof skin have to amount for something right?Razz I'd figure that's good for some "leeway" in how long one could ride in an uncomfortable position on suspension stiffer than a year old baguette. ROTFL

I'm sure there's a dirty joke in there somewhere, but I'm too lazy to find or make one. Wink

Hence why they'll have to make stops along the way-- I think even cyborg stamina is no match for those...but it is a point of friendly argument. while Adeline and Laine might scorn Allison and Triela for their ridiculous 3-wheelers, the latter two might nonchalantly make a smug comment about how their backs feel perfectly comfortable after sitting in bucket seats for the past few hours while Adeline and Laine are at least unconsciously massaging their lower backs.

Re: Top Gear Italy Episode/Challenge Repository

Y'all should've figured this was coming after seeing the Mobil 1 'Seat Swap' on SPEED Channel today...

'Car vs. Bike Seat Swap'
It is no secret that Allison is a huge petrolhead--but it's almost always a 4-wheel affair with a steering wheel, three pedals, and a floor-mounted shifter. Likewise, Adeline is rarely seen on anything with more than two wheels, no roof, doors, or rider-sheltering bodywork, and a displacement of 1000cc. The producers therefore have decided they should both spend a day outside their element at ACI Vallelunga. Just so that they are not alone in trying a new motoring discipline, the producers have also decided to rope in two well-known premier-series professional racing drivers from Formula One and MotoGP, respectively, to test their skills not only in a different car or bike, but on completely different machines, as well. While Allison expects that one of her heroes from Team Vodafone--either Jenson Button or Lewis Hamilton--will be there to test out 'Catherine', she instead gets some young German guy who drives a Renault with Red Bull decals on it-- 2010 Formula One World Champion and Red Bull Renault driver Sebastian Vettel. In much the same vein, Adeline was hoping for someone like 9-time MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi-- but instead gets some Spanish bloke with a penchant for getting thrown from his bike during crashes: 2010 MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo. With this special gathering, Allison and Adeline both get a chance to try machines from the truly big-time series of motorcycle and automobile racing while Vettel and Lorenzo get to see 'how the other half lives'. Assuming, of course, that each of them can figure out how to work each other's vehicles without sending them into the wall.

Vehicles Featured: 2009 Caterham Roadsport SV 'Catherine' (Turbocharged Honda F20C powerplant), 2010 BMW S1000RR, 2010 Red Bull RB6 'Luscious Liz/Randy Mandy' (Renault RS27 V8 powerplant), 2010 Yamaha YZR-M1

And some quotes:

Allison: So that we wouldn't be alone in our endeavour, The producers have been kind enough to provide each of us with company in the form of world-champion drivers from Formula One and MotoGP. Naturally I was ecstatic, and so I started preparing for Lewis Hamilton or Jenson Button to arrive by getting their favorite foods ready and ensuring their stay would be pleasant. However, instead of one of the guys from Team Vodafone coming over to meet us, there was apparently a mix-up and some German bloke who drives a Renault with Red Bull stickers all over it showed up. Apparently his name is Sebastian Vettel.

*Camera zooms out to reveal Sebastian Vettel standing nearby*

Sebastian Vettel: Hi! *he waves to the camera*

Allison: Yes, yes, it's very nice to meet you, yadda yadda yadda. Now go stand over that way; you're in my shot.

------------

Allison: So... I accelerate with my right hand and I change gears with my left foot? It's like Soviet Russia in wheeled form!

------------

Adeline: So what advice do you have if I crash?

Jorge Lorenzo: Uh... Try not to crash in the first place.

Adeline: That's helpful and sound instruction, to be sure...

------------

Allison: *driving the RB6 down the main straight* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA--*inhale*--HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Altheus: Got a new one for you two, you'll be going again to another shooting of that Top Gear Italy...thing.
Alpha: What are they doing this time?
Altheus: Apparently Allison and Adeline are swapping rides for a day.

Altheus then rests his feet on the ottoman as he carefully sips his wine.

When Alpha and Liesel finally arrive...

Brian: Excellent, you're both here. Really counting on you guys to make sure Allison and Adeline don't get too out of hand.

Liesel: Well we did plan on providing incentive for those two not to throttle each other senseless. They learned their lesson during the U.S. Road Trip, and we'll be there to keep them on their toes.

Brian: Actually, that's not mainly why we requested your presence.

Alpha: (raising an eyebrow) Really? What's the main reason, then?

Brian: Well, naturally, it's for the protection of our celebrity guests.

Liesel: I understand-- there is a risk, no matter how low, that there's someone looking to take their lives. Alpha and I both know this; himself more than I, since he did a bodyguard gig for a Japanese idol. Don't worry, we'll be prepared.

Brian: You're prepared to take on my little sister, then? Please don't hurt her, if you have to neutralize her. Same deal goes for Triela.

Alpha: I'm afraid I don't follow... How is Triela involved?

Brian: Well, Allison won't be too thrilled that Sebastian Vettel is the guest F1 driver rather than Hamilton or Button--and believe me, we tried to get ahold of them. As it happens, she's been having a running bet this season with Triela and losing €10 Euro every time Vettel wins a GP, and obviously, aside from the money, Triela's grown to be a fan of Vettel, so if something untoward happens to him... Well, I'm counting on the both of you to not let anything happen, if you understand.

Liesel: Ah. Say no more. We'll see to it that Mr. Vettel walks away unharmed from this segment shoot.

'Cheap Thrills Build Better Skills?'

All successful race drivers had to start somewhere. In the four-wheeled world, Tony Stewart and Lewis Hamilton, who drive in very different disciplines, both got their start racing karts at very young ages. Even Valentino Rossi of MotoGP fame began with karts and also raced on minimoto bikes when karting became too expensive. Looking at these humble beginnings and seeing where these men have gotten to now, it's certainly easy to believe that starting early and learning the ropes of racing on smaller and lower-powered machines builds skills that can be carried over to the more 'grown-up' types of international racing. But is this actually a fact?

To find out, Adeline and Allison select two lucky younger apprentices (Marisa and Lilith, respectively), take them under their wings, and spend a three-day weekend at Pista La Sirene Kart track for this experiment. To get a gauge of their younger charges' skills, Each of their apprentices is first set out in full-size vehicles for 5 laps around the track to get a baseline sample of their performance. Following that, the rest of the day is spent learning racing skills in more miniature vehicles with Allison providing a 125cc Rotax Micro Max shifter kart and Adeline providing a 50cc GRC RX mini moto bike. The next day sees Allison and Adeline's apprentices taking part in a few races to see how much they have learned and how they apply their lessons. Following the races under their belt, Allison and Adeline's apprentices do another 5 laps in full-size vehicles to compare their performance over time. In addition, Allison and Adeline themselves partially revisit their previous 'seat swap' and take on the miniature vehicles as well before attempting to see if whatever skills learned on a pocket bike and kart will improve on their previous times around ACI Vallelunga with Allison using Adeline's BMW S1000RR and Adeline using Allison's Caterham Roadsport, 'Catherine'.

Vehicles Featured: 2009 Caterham Roadsport SV 'Catherine' (Turbocharged Honda F20C powerplant), 2010 BMW S1000RR, 1989 Suzuki GS500E, 1963 Austin Mini Cooper S (fitted with rollcage), Rotax Micro Max 125cc Shifter kart, GRC RX 50cc mini moto bike.

This one may be a bit obvious, but it would still be awesome.

Reliant Redux: One-up the original! In the spirit of her astrophysicist parents, Kara will attempt to remake the Reliant Robin space shuttle with the help of Triela, Laine, and Allison.... and one-up the Brits by landing the shuttle successfully, without blowing a huge hole in a field somewhere.

Everything's More Fun with Rockets: Top Gear has strapped rockets to a car before... unmanned and on a ski ramp... but nobody has ever strapped a set of rockets to a Bugatti Vayron (sp? I'm no car expert) and fired the rockets while the car is traveling at full speed.... While Allison is in the car... Allison heads to the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah to do just that.

While waiting to start the experiment...

Allison: I'm still wondering how our insurance company okayed this... This is probably the first time I've not looked forward to driving a Veyron, if only out of a desire for self-preservation. They did something like this on 'Mythbusters'... it didn't end well.

If the cyborgs really want to one-up Top Gear they need to forego all that sissy remote control nonsense and have somebody really flying the thing. One of MP5's aeronautical fratello perhaps?

A bigger hazard than the actual experiment might be Michele Pagani's reaction when he finds out what's been done to his €1 million Veyron.

Rico: We're having trouble mounting the rocket pack brackets.

Henrietta: These sheet metal screws just crack the carbon fiber.

Marisa: Hmmm...we could use this industrial strength epoxy I suppose.

Allison: (nervously) Are you sure it was a good idea to use the murder-midgets as our pit crew?

Kara: They work cheap.

Here's an old classic...

Each one is given 7500 Euro's and are told to go out and buy a Sports Saloon and go meet up in the Compound for a series of challenges that involve driving around the world. No 4WD cars.

Includes:
Tests on how spacious the car is by having a band play in it.
A track day run to see who's the fastest on the tarmac.
Then head over to Botswana to relive the UK TG's experiences.
An obligatory Special Rally stage.
Then a trip to London where they register the cars as minicabs and see how well the do as such.
Crossing the channel and driving the rest of the way back to the SWA compound as a test of reliability.
With a detour in the Alps down the Col de Turini just for the heck of it.
And finally, Fixing (Due to any damages sustained during the previous challenges) and setting the cars up for
a local car show.

This be a Global event so we need as MANY participants in it. XD

'Order Up'

In recent times, the economy has made affordable meals one of the greatest everyday consumer demands. With this demand, the food truck, previously dismissed as a questionable and potentially unsanitary method of acquiring sustenance, has made a comeback, with better, tastier, and healthier selections and more professional owners and operators who take cleanliness seriously, particularly in North America, where food trucks are all the rage in the big city, offering a great variety of cuisines both exotic and common at affordable prices.

Now since the presenters of Top Gear Italy know good food when they taste it, the question now is, can they make and sell it? Splitting into three teams of two, each team chooses to commit to a particular type of cuisine, and with a budget of $15,000 per team, the girls are tasked to select their workhorses, outfit them with the proper equipment and make their food trucks unique, and purchase all the supplies they'll need to cook up a storm. They are then set loose on the streets of Philadelphia, each accompanied by a celebrity chef as they bring their a-game to feed the hungry masses of America's birthplace. The team that makes the most profit wins the challenge, with all proceeds going to the Make-a-Wish foundation.

Vehicles Featured: 1997 Ford Ranger (302ci Windsor V8 swap, expanding camper shell, barbecue pit trailer), 1997 Chevrolet Astro (customized audio system, conveyor belt sushi display), 1994 Chevrolet P30 Step Van (Gelato dispenser, custom supercharger application)

Celebrity Guests: Masaharu Morimoto (Team Pagani/Ricci; "A Taste of the Rising Sun"), Gordon Ramsay (Team Johannson/Hilshire; "Una Forchettata di Pasta"), Myron Mixon (Team McDonnell/Stanaway; "Hot Rod BBQ")

Might want to catch this Sunday's "The Next Food Network Star" since they are doing a food truck challenge.

I can just imagine Kara gushing over cooking with Morimoto while Moriomoto gushes over the fact that he insisted they get the Astro.

And in the meantime, Triela and Claes have Gordan Ramsey bound and gagged in a corner of there respective van halfway through the trip.

After tonight's episode of Top Gear, I think I need to have Kara do a review of a really cheap new car.

"Here at Top Gear Italy, we get some flack for only testing exotics and sports cars. Well tonight, I review the Toyota Aygo. This base model can be had for €9500. In comparison, my outfit is from Prada and can be had for €9600."

This gives me an idea...

'The Hip New Things'

With executive opinion stating that Top Gear Italy is out of touch with today's youth, the presenters have been handed approximately €16000 Euros each and ordered to purchase a brand new or late-model youth-oriented compact vehicle that is fun, cool, affordable, and won't cost too much to insure. Upon purchase of their brand new or secondhand vehicles, they are then put through a series of challenges that test how practical, economical, personal, and social their vehicles are in order to find which car is the most ideal motoring platform for hip young urbanites the world over. Can six petrolheads survive in a world of thrift store merchandise, fixed-gear bicycles, and bands they've never heard of because they're not cool enough? Only one way to find out...

Vehicles Featured: 2011 Scion xB, 2010 Nissan Cube, 2010 Kia Soul, 2008 MINI Cooper Clubman S, 2006 Honda Jazz, 2009 Fiat Grande Punto Evo

Quotes:

Allison: This is the life-- I'm in my turbocharged Cooper Clubman, organic, fair-trade groceries in the boot area along with my fixie, and I've got Megan Washington's Sunday Best as my soundtrack...

"I'll get dressed and I'll get ready
Hold it, hold it, hold it steady
I will take the time to make it
Just so you've the chance to break it...
"

-----------

Kara: Claes, what on earth are you thinking?! You've bought a...a Kia!

Claes: Not just any old Kia; a Kia Soul.

Laine: Claes, the only people who buy Kia Souls are people who don't have one. Are you trying to tell us something?

Claes: Oh, shut up. You drive an Xbox, and Kara, you're only driving a Fiat because the budget won't let you get an Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

------------

Triela: Petra, That's a Nissan Cube you got, right?

Petra: Yes, why?

Allison: See, we could've sworn that was a front-loading washing machine backing up towards us...

Tim: Posers!

Tim would be pretty correct in that one-word description. While this challenge has a stereotypical hipster overtone, it still remains a sort of consumer advice piece about how much you can get for your money in terms of features, personalization, and so on. I don't think that any of the girls will be accepting the hipster lifestyle in the end, since they don't really "get it" per se. If nothing else, they come away with knowledge of pretty good musicians they would otherwise have never heard about.

Hold up a minute... Triela's always wearing suits, right? With a little modification, she could pass for a fan of ska punk a la The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. In fact, I think I'll put their 'Let's Face It' album in the CD player of her Honda Jazz.

'Extroverted Estates for all Prices and Tastes'

In a world awash with bumbling, ostentatious SUVs, humdrum MPVs, and androgynous crossovers that have no idea what they want to be, one of the original family-oriented cars, the station wagon, does not have the same presence it once had, especially in North America, where the aforementioned types of vehicles seem to have overshadowed such a humble workhorse. In Europe, however, the station wagon, or 'Estate car,' is very much alive, kicking, and in recent years, showed that it is capable of kicking serious arse. This new breed of station wagon is designed to be the ultimate automotive wolf in sheep's clothing, remaining utilitarian enough to carry a family of four (or five), their dog, their weekly shop, and a bicycle or two on the roof...but putting one's foot down unleashes the savage monster lurking beneath, ready to eviscerate the nearest Porsche 911 driver with an overinflated ego. With this new breed of machines, kissing the apex of a corner just right can become a family affair, school runs are no longer boring, and long car trips are that much shorter.

However, the concept of the 'Extroverted Estate' is not limited to Europe's shores. With Japan being home to a rich automotive tuning culture, a few manufacturers have inevitably made hot station wagons to provide performance right out of the factory, and in America, the concept of a 'Hot Rod Wagon' is nothing new; in fact, quite a few station wagons go drag racing on the weekends, and so there's at least been some thought given to lighting a fire under these otherwise mundane grocery getters. However, not all high-performance wagons are created or priced equally, and the idea of what performance is can be interpreted differently by each manufacturer.

With Kara and Laine having made a mess of reviewing the Jaguar XF-R Sport Break and Cadillac CTS-V Sportwagon, the producers have decided to give things another go. This time, all six presenters of Top Gear Italy pick a hotted-up estate car from various price ranges and put them through a series of tests in the fields of practicality and performance to see which is best. They face not only challenging driving conditions, but also large dogs, their own cars' ability to fold down the rear seats, small children with messy ice cream cones, and finding enough spaces and places to put all their groceries and cycling equipment and other sports gear. The car that can meet these challenges and still set fast times will be deemed the best 'Extroverted Estate' of them all.

Cars featured: 2012 Ferrari FF, 2011 Audi C6 RS6 Avant, 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon, 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT-8, 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR Sportback, 2009 Subaru Legacy STi S402

'Scalextrol Slot Car Racing'
Back in the day, there was a time when one could be nine years old, own a sports car, and drive it like a hoon within the confines of mum and dad's sitting room. The means for this enterprising, entertaining activity was known as slot car racing, and it is one of the simplest motor sport hobbies one can get into-- press the throttle to go, let it go to slow down and stop, and the track and the guide tacked onto the chassis of the car did the steering for you. The greatest test of skill was always in the corners, where overcooking the car with the throttle led to an up-close and personal experience with the imitation plastic Armco, flying off-track and under the couch, or spinning your car completely round with no means of going in reverse to continue; situations where the only options were to cut power before the corner, or somehow power-slide your way through. It was exciting, and no self-respecting boy back in the day found himself without one.

While the hobby has faded primarily to a demographic of the very young and the old and dedicated, the excitement they experience is no less different, but it is a bit of a nerd's game. Petrolheads wouldn't busy themselves with these things... would they? Well, what if someone super-sized it, made it into an actual motorsport? Luckily, that's precisely what the Top Gear Italy crew have in mind: build the world's first life-sized slot cars out of real cars and race them on a life-sized slot car track with no steering wheel input, using only the gas, brake, clutch pedal, and gear lever to guide them safely and successfully around the track. With the help of Q-branch, The Girls will turn a gaggle of Lada Riva 1500s and a few several tons of injection-molded plastic into the world's first life size slot car set. "How Hard Can It Be," anyway? The car's on a guide, they're fairly heavy, so they *should* be less likely to fly off the track in a barrel roll than their scale-model counterparts, right? We'll see....

'Rally-Bred Street Sleds'

What has four wheels, four-wheel drive, jumps over crests and takes hairpin turns sideways to achieve victory in international competition, and can actually be bought by the average civilian driver? A rally car, of course; and in particular, their everyday road-going brethren that can ply the school run almost as well as any special stage track. Over the years, several different cars have been sold to the public in rather inclusive numbers, with sales attributed to the "Win on Sunday/Sell on Monday" concept of motorsport marketing. These vehicles also gave their otherwise average owners access to the same thrill one would get from a supercar costing three times as much as they paid for what is otherwise a practical compact vehicle that is reasonable to live with.

Over the years, their manufacturers eventually stopped making these cars, made them too big for their britches, altered the recipes that made them great, or any combination of the above. Therefore, a current-generation Lancer Evolution doesn't have the same exact character as it did when drivers like Tommi Makinen flogged them to victory on the World Rally Circuit. Thankfully however, if one knows where to look, one can go buy one secondhand to see what all the fuss was about.

Naturally, this is a task that the presenters are eager to undertake. With a budget of €20,000 Euros each, All hands are on deck to buy a road-going example of some of the most famous and successful rally cars in the history of the WRC. Considering the age of the cars and the fact that they are all second-hand, how good are they still? And when subjected to the same conditions as the rally cars that made them famous, will they live up to the reputation they were sold on? And just as importantly, are they practical?

Cars Featured: 1988 Audi Quattro Coupe, 1996 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV, 1997 Subaru Impreza WRX STI, 1996 Ford Escort RS Cosworth, 1990 Lancia Delta HF Integrale 16v, 1994 Toyota Celica GT-Four

A decent opening to this is to compare the European notion of a family car to that of a typical American minivan or SUV.

Which I have to admit, if I had a family of my own, my car of choice would be the '04 Subaru Impreza WRX STi Station Wagon. I wanna see an SUV weave through traffic on a last minute school run like one of those can. Evil

'Tweed Speed'

Because the girls of Top Gear Italy are from a younger generation, not all of them can readily discern the reason why men of a certain age have such a fondness for older cars that are, by modern standards, underpowered, mechanically unreliable, and comparatively unsafe. Yet despite these flaws, these same cars have a rather loyal following, with entire clubs and events often built around them to celebrate them.

To find out the reasons behind such behavior, each of them are given approximately 10,000 pounds to buy and/or restore a postwar-era car (In Adeline's case, a bike) no newer than 1966, and then drive from Rome to Goodwood House in West Sussex, England for the annual Goodwood Revival. It sounds like a simple, straightforward task, but in typical Top Gear style, a road trip is never a simple undertaking. Should any of their vehicles fail them completely, a beige Volkswagen Beetle Type 1 and an off-white Vespa 150 GL are on hand to allow any of the presenters to continue the trip in shame and humiliation.

Vehicles Featured: 1961 Jaguar MK2 3.8, 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder, 1964 Austin Mini Cooper Mk1, 1965 Triumph TR4A, 1960 Austin-Healey Sprite, 1966 Fiat 500 Abarth 595, 1961 Norton Dominator 99, 1956 Volkswagen Beetle Type 1, 1962 Vespa 150 GL

When Life Gives you LeMons...

It's no secret that endurance racing is something of interest to our merry band of hosts at Top Gear Italy. So when the producers told them they would be participating in a well-known endurance race series in America, Kara and Allison naturally spearheaded packing bags and shuttling their co-hosts to the airport for their overseas flight. However, while their flight takes them to the East Coast of the United States, they land not in Florida, but in Newark, New Jersey, and are shuttled directly to the New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville in time for the annual 'The Real Hoopties of New Jersey' event.

As it turns out, they have been enrolled not in the Rolex Sports Car Series or 12 Hours of Sebring, but a much lower-key (and lower-cost) endurance race series known as the 24 Hours of LeMons, an amateur race series where entrants of varying skill race around a course for extended periods of time in vehicles worth no more than $500 (with safety equipment exempt from the cost) of varying degrees of speed, power, and reliability. It is also revealed that Claes is exempt from participating with the rest of the hosts, as she is one of the judges designated to hand out cruel, unusual, and often hilarious punishments to any and all drivers who are black-flagged, thereby giving her license to settle all the slights saved up against her fellow hosts should any of them be black-flagged for bad driving.

For the rest of the hosts, they must work together as a team to keep a jalopy of a first-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata with a powerful but extremely temperamental high-mileage Toyota engine running for the duration of the event, contending with the constant threat of mechanical failure, other drivers, and their own potential stupidity in a race that seems to be the 'Whose Line' of races. Welcome to The 24 Hours of LeMons, where everything's made up and the points don't matter. The burning questions everyone will want answered:

-Will the Stigette involve herself in the race?
-Will Kara have to 'Mime Her Crime'?
-Who puts a Toyota twin-cam engine in a Mazda?
-Can Claes be bribed (let alone successfully)?
-Did Triela just overtake a rusty E30 BMW with a mohawk on its roof?
